The first thing that hits you about Ruby Braff is that sound: full, round, warm, vibrant, voluptuous and unmistakably his. He had it from the start, but it´s grown wider and deeper with time and is, quite simply, one of the marvels of jazz today ... There´s only one Ruby Braff, and if you are like me, you can´t ever get enough of him. So add this little gem to your Braff shelf. -- Dan Morgenstern, Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University

Although cornet player Ruby Braff passed away in 2002, Arbors has continued to honor his legacy by releasing previously unavailable material. As a result, Braff's oeuvre continues to grow along with his reputation as a central figure in revival jazz. Controlled Nonchalance at the Regattabar, Vol. 2, recorded on November 26 and 27, 1993, may be an odd title for an album, but the music is fabulous. Braff is joined by tenor Scott Hamilton, pianist Dave McKenna, guitarist Gray Sargent, bassist Marshall Woods, and drummer Chuck Riggs for a 70-minute set featuring mostly familiar standards. As one might guess from glancing at the lengths of these pieces, there's a lot of room for spontaneous soloing on extended versions of "It's All Right with Me" and "Pennies from Heaven." These performers exceed in their ability to play as a band, and the instrumental mix, with heavy horns balanced by lighter piano and guitar, works well. Braff and friends offer a treat for Ellington fans with a relaxed 12-minute medley featuring "In a Sentimental Mood" and "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good." Overall, the set is fairly mellow, which makes the upbeat wildness of "Swinging on a Star" and "Them There Eyes" stand out even more. For classic jazz fans, Controlled Nonchalance is a lovely disc that will be much appreciated. ~Review by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

The UK’s Guardian newspaper has called Rigmor Gustafsson “penetratingly delicate, and subtle,” and she continues to establish herself as one of the leading jazz vocalists in Scandinavia.

She has released 9 CD’s since 1997. Three have sold gold in Sweden, the first jazz artist to have that honor since Monica Zetterlund’s 1991 classic Varsamt. Rigmor’s “Alone with You” (2008) won a Swedish Grammy, and “I Will Wait for You” (2003) received The Jazz Award in Germany. In November 2013 she received the most prestigious jazz award in Sweden, “The Royal Musical Academy’s Jazz Award”. Her new CD, “When You Make Me Smile” with piano trio and orchestra, was released in August 2014.

Through the years Rigmor has toured around the globe, mostly with her own trio, but she has also featured in other constellations (Radio String Quartet Vienna, Danish Radio Big Band, The Royal Filharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Radio Jazz Orchestra), and has appeared on a number of TV shows. She has performed twice at celebrations for Crown Princess Victoria: Her Royal Highness’ birthday and the 2010 royal wedding concert, both performances broadcasted live on Swedish National TV. Rigmor also performed at the 2003 Nobel Prize Ceremony, broadcasted on TV in numerous countries.

Jill Seifers Walsh (1965-2012) grew up in Portland, Oregon, studied at Berklee College of Music, started her career in New York City, and lived in Nashville until her untimely death in December 2012.

Jill was a modern songwriter with a gift for beautiful melodies and a voice as pure as the Pacific Northwest. Backed by some of New York's and Nashville's finest musicians, Jill's own compositions brought a sense of musicianship and integrity that is sometimes missing in today's music. A musician since the age of four, Jill shared the stage and studio with Shawn Colvin, Jessica Simpson and she is featured on the top 5 single (BBC Radio 1) "Breathe", which is from the album Nightbird by Erasure. Her debut solo album was produced by Steve Walsh whose credits include productions with Erasure, Fil Izler, and Amy Atchley. Jill's vast parallel career as a jazz vocalist has been documented on recordings with some of today's most established jazz musicians, most notably pianist Mika Pohjola, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonist Chris Cheek, drummer Jorge Rossy and pianist Michael Kanan. She was in the prestigious faculty of the New School and New York University jazz programs while living in New York City.

The MegaFlame Big Band and Cabaret plays a mish-mash of mid-century jazz, blues, and cool "re-conceived" versions of contemporary tunes. We include a lot of theatrical elements in our playa-inspired set which runs the gamut from Ella Fitzgerald to Morphine and from Tom Waits to Big Mama Thorton.

A MegaFlame event is always a BIG show with a constantly evolving family of performers. Not only killer tunes from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, but also vintage-style burlesque, fire arts, schtick, and plenty of costume changes! MegaFlame is a step back in time with a modern twist.

We also perform in various sized smaller configurations—from three pieces all the way up to the full 10 person musical crew.

Diva Nancy Wilson was among contemporary music's most stylish and sultry vocalists; while often crossing over into the pop and R&B markets -- and even hosting her own television variety program -- she remained best known as a jazz performer, renowned for her work alongside figures including Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing. Born February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe, OH, Wilson first attracted notice performing the club circuit in nearby Columbus; she quickly earned a growing reputation among jazz players and fans, and she was recording regularly by the late '50s, eventually signing to Capitol and issuing LPs including 1959's Like in Love and Nancy Wilson with Billy May's Orchestra. Her dates with Shearing, including 1960's The Swingin's Mutual, solidified her standing as a talent on the rise, and her subsequent work with Adderley -- arguably her finest recordings -- further cemented her growing fame and reputation.

In the years to follow, however, Wilson often moved away from jazz, much to the chagrin of purists; she made numerous albums, many of them properly categorized as pop and R&B outings, and toured extensively, appearing with everyone from Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughan to Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker. She even hosted her own Emmy-winning variety series for NBC, The Nancy Wilson Show, and was a frequent guest performer on other programs; hits of the period included "Tell Me the Truth," "How Glad I Am," "Peace of Mind," and "Now, I'm a Woman." Regardless of how far afield she traveled, Wilson always maintained her connections to the jazz world, and in the 1980s, she returned to the music with a vengeance, working closely with performers including Hank Jones, Art Farmer, Ramsey Lewis, and Benny Golson. By the 1990s, she was a favorite among the "new adult contemporary" market, her style ideally suited to the format's penchant for lush, romantic ballads; she also hosted the Jazz Profiles series on National Public Radio.

In the early 2000s, Wilson recorded two albums with Ramsey Lewis for Narada (2002's Meant to Be and 2003's Simple Pleasures). Her 2004 album R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal) was a blend of straight-ahead jazz and ballads, similar to her next record, 2006's Turned to Blue, which, like R.S.V.P., used a different instrumentalist for each track. In 2005, Capitol released a three-part series to pay tribute to Wilson's contributions to music in the '50s and '60s: Guess Who I Saw Today: Nancy Wilson Sings Songs of Lost Love, Save Your Love for Me: Nancy Wilson Sings the Great Blues Ballads, and The Great American Songbook. ~by Jason Ankeny

Chris Barber had been at the forefront of the Trad Jazz Revival during the 1950s and 1960s. When it all fell apart in the mid-60s Chris Barber managed to keep the music alive and fresh which he continues to do today. In the late 1960s he added a Blues guitarist and in 1978 he added a second reed player to the front line which enabled the band to be more flexible and have a bigger sound. The well known Rock drummer, Pete York, also joined the band. The repertoire on these CDs ranges from Trad Jazz standards, to Duke Ellington tunes, to Jazz/Rock tunes like Dick Morrissey's Heavy Henry, to Pete York's drum feature, Extension 345. This collection is a double-CD-for-the-price-of-one set based on a triple LP release which was one of the classic Barber releases of the 1970s.

There is an impressive amount of variety on this swing-based set despite the small size of the group. Clarinetist Tim Laughlin, vocalist/rhythm guitarist Rebecca Kilgore, pianist Tom Roberts, bassist Marty Eggers and drummer Hal Smith all understand prebop jazz quite well. Many of the songs are taken from the swing era (including "Piano Man," "Drum Boogie," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "Sing, Sing, Sing, and "Cow Cow Boogie") but in most cases the quintet brings something fresh to the well-known tunes. Kilgore has straightforward and pleasing vocals on nine of the 16 selections, Hal Smith vocalizes harmlessly on three, and overall the music is enjoyable even if lacking any real surprises. ~Scott Yanow

Chris Vadala plays just about every popular reed instrument on his debut recording as a leader. Having worked extensively with flügelhornist Chuck Mangione, one might expect a more contemporary jazz session, but Vadala begins with a slow blues, "Out of the Shadows," that finds him clearly in the John Coltrane camp on tenor. Another original, "Club Contrafact," is a burning workout, with pianist Mark Andrew Cook switching to organ. He also explores music by past greats, including a brisk run with his wailing alto sax in Cannonball Adderley's seldom-played blues "Sticks" (where he also overdubs baritone), along with a breezy flute feature in Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" (where he also dubs several different instruments behind the lead voice). He switches to soprano for a heartfelt interpretation of Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood," giving it a bit of a wistful air by opening the piece unaccompanied. Pepe Gonzales' exotic Latin percussion sets up the novel treatment of Wayne Shorter's modal masterpiece "Footprints," with Vadala making a belated entrance after the rest of the band, playing very subtly on soprano. It's a shame that it took Chris Vadala so long to record on his own, but this excellent effort will likely open more opportunities for him to work as a leader. ~Ken Dryden

A jazz and pop vocalist born in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 28, 1962, Caroline Henderson would move to Copenhagen in 1983 and become one of Denmark's top talents. Her first taste of fame and fortune in her new home came about in 1989, as part of the group RayDeeOh, with Maria Bramsen. That group soon came to an end, and Henderson was left to fend for herself. In 1995 she released the first of many albums, Cinemataztic, and began to work in television and film, as well as acting in plays. Her follow-up full-length, Metamorphing, hit stores in 1998, and was followed over the next ten years by five more albums, all of which (Dolores J in 2000, NAOS in 2002, Don't Explain in 2003, Made in Europe in 2004, and Love or Nothin' in 2007) built upon the success of their predecessors. In March of 2008 Henderson released album number eight, No. 8, which was a Top Five hit in Denmark. Apart from her commercial successes, Henderson also won Denmark's Grammy for Best Vocal Recording in 2007 for her work on the album Love or Nothin'.Bio ~ Chris True  http://www.allmusic.com/artist/caroline-henderson-mn0000179414/biography

During a period when Stan Getz was recording purely straightahead jazz for Concord, he joined up with keyboardist Mitchel Forman, guitarist Chuck Loeb, bassist Mark Egan, drummer Victor Lewis and percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr., for this obscure session in France. First released in the U.S. in 1990, this finds the veteran tenor playing "contemporary" jazz, doing a good job of fitting into five Loeb and two Forman originals plus "Body and Soul." Not essential music but a fine example of Getz's flexibility and creative instincts. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/billy-highstreet-samba-mw0000310221

Red Garland (1923-84) is often critically dismissed a cocktail pianist only worthy of tinkling in the background of a lounge, but his depth as a musician is much deeper than that. A member of the first classic Miles Davis Quintet (with John Coltrane), Garland won favor with the bandleader for the way he used musical space, approximating the approach of pianist Ahmad Jamal. As a part of that band, Garland helped shape a good deal of Davis' Prestige output, as well as the trumpeter's first two Columbia releases. Garland possessed one of the largest songbooks of any working pianist of the period, comparable to that of Art Tatum. The superb Red Garland's Piano (1957) is a testament to his large musical vocabulary and rightly occupies a place among the first ten installments of the "Rudy Van Gelder Remasters series recently inaugurated by the Concord Music Group. There is a certain grace in the way Rudy Van Gelder updates his engineering masterpieces for the digital 21st Century. RVG's remastered Red Garland's Piano considerably betters the sound of the same recording last released as part of Fantasy Jazz's 20-bit remastering program.

The new recording brings more perfectly into aural focus Garland's art of the jazz piano trio. Along with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor, Garland created an impressive group of trio recordings. Paramount to this sound was Garland's careful high-register playing, which is dusted off with Van Gelder's remastering. Outstanding on this disc and justifying its remastering is Garland's extended over-the-top reading of Percy Mayfield's "Please Bring Me Someone to Love. Garland and bassist Paul Chambers both solo effectively on this, the disc's only blues. Garland largely focuses on ballads, which he dispatches with panache and grace. More than a cocktail pianist, Red Garland proves himself as a song stylist, captured and rendered on this reissue with digital perfection by Rudy Van Gelder. ~ C.Michael Bailey  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/red-garlands-piano-red-garland-prestige-records-review-by-c-michael-bailey.php

The name Young Guns seems ironically amiss until one learns that this recording dates from 1968-69 when organist Gene Ludwig was thirty years old, guitarist Pat Martino twenty-three and drummer Randy Gelispie somewhere in that neighborhood, long before he became fondly known as "Uncle G." The organ trio was in its heyday then, and this one was caught on tape during an exciting live date at Club 118 in Louisville, KY. How many other such performances have been lost forever owing to the absence of a tape recorder or the failure to turn it on is anyone's guess. But this one, thank goodness, has been preserved for present-day ears to appreciate. Ludwig, an admirer of Jimmy Smith and forerunner of Joey DeFrancesco and other Hammond masters, sprays bluesy notes and ideas all over the landscape, while Martino, a lyrical machine, has the proper phrase for every occasion, whether rushing quickly forward or simply hanging loose. Gelispie, a splendid soloist when his number is called, serves as the trio's rhythmic anchor, deftly shaping the time as Ludwig and Martino zigzag around and through it.

To put it another way, all three are at the top of their respective games. This is clear from the outset, a fast-moving rendition of Leslie Bricusse / Anthony Newley's "Who Can I Turn To?" Everyone is smoking on that one, and even more so on the usually even-tempered standard "Close Your Eyes," wherein the accelerator is pressed to the floor and the trio burns some serious rubber. The pace slackens to a degree on Wes Montgomery's groovy "Road Song," then resumes apace on Martino's animated finale, "Colossus." Leading the threesome there are John Coltrane's engaging "Mr. PC," Milt Jackson's funky "Sam Sack" and Michel Legrand's "Watch What Happens," a gentle samba that is as close to a ballad as anything the crew undertakes. Even more than forty years onward, the themes sound fresh and charming, thanks to the commingled talents of Messrs Ludwig, Martino and Gelispie who underscore the premise that good music is always in style.

Even though the Young Guns no longer answer to that name, they leave no doubt in this colorful scrapbook why it was once very much their province. ~ Jack Bowers  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/young-guns-gene-ludwig-highnote-records-review-by-jack-bowers.php
