Baritone Saxophone – Cecil Payne; Bass – Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers (3); Drums – Max Roach, Osie Johnson; Guitar – Barry Galbraith; Piano – Hank Jones, John Williams; Tenor Saxophone – Lucky Thompson; Trombone – Jimmy Cleveland; Trumpet – Ernie Royal. First session August 4, 1955; Second session August 12, 1955; Third session November 22, 1955.

The first of five albums headed by trombonist Jimmy Cleveland during 1955-1959 (he has not led any since), this out of print LP (which was reissued by Trip in the 1970s) features Cleveland in medium-size groups with trumpeter Ernie Royal; either Lucky Thompson or Jerome Richardson on tenor; baritonist Cecil Payne; Hank Jones, John Williams, or Wade Legge on piano; Barry Galbraith, Paul Chambers, or Oscar Pettiford on bass; and either Max Roach, Osie Johnson, or Joe Harris on drums. The all-star cast interprets a variety of Quincy Jones arrangements, alternating standards with lesser-known originals, and although many of his sidemen get fine spots, Cleveland generally wins solo honors. ~Scott Yanow

That's for Me is the Susie Arioli Band's third release for Justin Time and it makes a specialty of a 1930s style of swing. With influences and a knowledge of repertoire from Leadbelly to Stuff Smith, from Tammy Wynette to Ella Fitzgerald, listeners seeking an array of rarely heard songs are sure to enjoy this great collection of music. Arioli's soft, sincere, charming voice is the perfect foil for Jordan Officer's acoustic and electric jazz guitar stylings which provide a hint of folk, light swing and country music flavors. The Canadian chanteuse has a very interesting voice that is reminiscent of Peggy Lee, Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette all rolled into one (check out "It's a Good Day," "Tess' Torch Sing" and "Why Do I.") However, Susie Arioli revitalizes and adds to these Great American Songbook standards and makes this music her own. Her treatment of "Mother Earth" as a soft blues that tells it like it is after your time is over here on earth shows her musical depth and knowledge of repertoire outside of her native Canada and well-known swing style. Rodgers & Hammerstein's obscure gem "That's for Me" features a memorable solo from Jordan Officer on acoustic guitar. The lyrics are very sweet and Arioli manages to seduce her listeners with a wispy interpretation of being attracted to someone she notices in the park! Overall, Arioli's choice to re-interpret these obscure songs, and to restyle them in such an appealing manner is quite an accomplishment. Vintage or not, on That's for Me, they speak to a different generation and provide a wonderful vehicle for Susie Arioli's talents as a vocalist and drummer. ~Paula Edelstein

is was one of Al Cohn's last recordings, a live session with trumpeter Al Porcino's European big band. Cohn's Lester Young-influenced tone had darkened quite a bit through the years and his tough tone was now closer to Illinois Jacquet than to Young. However he still swung in a boppish style and is the main soloist throughout this excellent outing, playing eight of his arrangements plus older charts from Gerry Mulligan and Bill Holman among others. Surprisingly Al Porcino does not take a single solo, being content to play in the ensembles and listen to his old friend perform in prime form. ~Scott Yanow

Andrew Rathbun – saxophones, electronics; Scott Lee – bass; Jeff Hirshfield – drums. Toronto-born and NY-based saxophonist/composer Andrew Rathbun returns to studio with his core group of “Shadow Forms” to explore further his musical concept of improvisation forming into written music.

"The album is another variation from Rathbun, who likes to experiment with instrumental settings; he has tried duets and big bands before this. The three musicians sustain their empathy throughout all of their explorations of these richly coordinated and melodic pieces and the improvisations are perceptive and incisive. This is a very good album indeed and the music adapts itself to quiet playing in the background or a full- frontal performance on your super hi-fi." ~ Ken Cheetham

“This outstanding release remains fresh with each hearing, as new facets of these performances become apparent to the listener.” ~Ken Dryden

Ranee Lee - Maple Groove: Songs From The Great Canadian Songbook

[7:03] 12. Both Sides Now
[3:51] 13. Spinning Wheel

Canadian vocalist Ranee Lee mines an attractive concept on Maple Groove : showcasing great Canadian songwriters. The vast majority of major Canadian songwriters known internationally are pop rather than jazz artists, but a singer with Lee's chops and taste meets the challenge of making pop songs propulsively swing. Her covers of Bruce Cockburn's "My Beat" and Randy Bachman's "Undun" are glowing examples on this album. Lee does "Both Sides Now" convincingly as a slow ballad, simply the best translation of a Joni Mitchell folk song into a jazzy torch song I've ever heard.

Capably backed by a professional, if not awe-inspiring band, Lee projects her dusky voice most dramatically on ballads, particularly the morose "It Looks Like Rain" and "Maybe September." With Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind," she sings as if on autopilot, although one could question the sagacity of setting Lightfoot to jazz to begin with. And that raises the one problematic aspect of this concept album: how was this material selected? The most internationally acclaimed Canadian songwriter of the past century, Leonard Cohen, is omitted, and only one song in French is offered. Don't expect this album to win friends and influence fans in Quebec (where the label is located). Further, two of the songs Lee covers really are not vocal pieces at all, Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby" (saddled with smarmy and sentimental lyrics by jazz journalist Gene Lees, who should stick to journalism) and Oscar Peterson's "Hymn to Freedom." The instrumental versions by the original artists put these vocal versions to shame. This disc's high points, and there are many, make me hope for a second volume of this much needed concept by a fine singer, with Cohen and French songwriters receiving their due. ~Norman Weistein

Bob Costley: My music is original and my songs tell a story, add that to the fact that I love playing my drums and my music in the bars, and the thrill I get when it all comes together, and you'll know who I am. I Started with the band "4 Times Soul". I played for years with the Bonner Brothers Band. We brought Alan Jackson out, and into the bars for the first time. I Founded Wishbone Creek Band, and then went on to Alaska's Off The Cuff Band, and now I'm on my own. I'm writing and recording, and playing Jam sessions here on the Kenai Peninsula, at The Albatross Restaurant. Having a ball and the music is good.
