The British Jazz Age revivalists of the Pasadena Roof Orchestra present the range of their talent on this 45-track, two-CD compilation. Nominally, the PRO is a re-creation of a 1920s society dance band in the manner of those of popular bandleaders of the time such as Paul Whiteman and Ben Selvin. But over the course of many records, the group has expanded its perspective somewhat, to take in other music of the ‘20s and early ‘30s, including hotter jazz groups like Duke Ellington's Jungle Band as well as Broadway show tunes and movie songs. Still, they tend to play them at what, in the '20s, was known as foxtrot tempo, so that, for instance, "Singing in the Rain" bounces along quickly, as it did when it was first performed, not when Gene Kelly danced to it in the movie of the same name in the ‘50s.

Among these selections, the PRO occasionally crosses the time and style barrier of the Swing Era that began in the mid-‘30s, even to the point of performing the Benny Goodman barnburner "Sing Sing Sing" and presenting "As Time Goes By" in an arrangement reminiscent of the way it sounds in the ‘40s film Casablanca. In fact, the group time travels farther forward, incorporating the Beatles' "Honey Pie," which is at least a ‘20s pastiche number even if it has a 1968 copyright, and Queen's "The Show Must Go On." The orchestra plays the material straight, if with a distinctly British feel, particularly in the vocals, despite much of the music having an American origin. This makes for occasional oddities, none odder than the singer on the novelty "Paddlin' Madelin' Home," who not only cannot bring himself to drop that "g" in "paddlin'," but then adds another to preserve the rhyme, actually singing, "paddling Mad'ling home"! But that may only show that the PRO does have a sense of humor about its music after all.~ William Ruhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/album/home-in-pasadena-very-best-of-the-pasadena-roof-orchestra-mw0000742346

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra was formed in Nov. 1969 by Johnny Arthy, a lover of 1920's jazz who sought to lead a dance-oriented jazz-influenced big band specializing in music from the 1923-37 period. The British band gained its name because Arthy liked the obscure song "Pasadena." The orchestra had its first gig in April 1970 and soon Arthy came across a windfall, 1, 500 original arrangements from the 1920's practically given away by an elderly lady whose father had been musical director of a dance band in the twenties. The P.R.O. started out playing once a week but, after the success of their first album in 1974, they turned professional and began working much more often. A European tour in 1975 added to the group's momentum and since then they have worked constantly and recorded fairly regularly (in the early days for Transatlantic and later on mostly for their own P.R.O. label). No famous soloists are among their alumni since the Pasadena Roof Orchestra is very much a dance band, but the group has long featured colorful ensembles, period vocals and brief individual spots, very much in the early pre-swing style which they treat with great respect. ~ Scott Yanow https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/breakaway/1190860175

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra is a world class, unique formation which was created over 40 years ago. It has successfully appeared at major concert houses in London, New York, Dubai, Berlin Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpar. It has recorded more than forty albums. The Orchestra has provided music for films, such as the ‘Comedian Harmonists’ (Josef Vilsmaier,) and completed a soundtrack for ‘Just a Gigolo’ 1980 with David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich (her last film). It has appeared at Buckingham Palace (Christmas party 2010), and its soundtracks have been used in numerous advertising campaigns. The musicians have twice toured the USA to critical acclaim.

It is probably no longer accurate to list the Orchestra nostalgia, as this seems more applicable to the recent phenomenon of tribute bands. The Orchestra has become an established name, in its own right, in a similar way to the great dance bands that inspired it.

The music is a form of modern classic. It stands on the shoulders of giants like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome kern, Ray Noble, Hoagy Carmichael. These were Composers who wrote unforgettable melodies, and sophisticated romantic lyrics. Our tunes are still the all-time standards, the towering achievements of the song-writers art.

Like the great bands of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Ray Noble, Fletcher Henderson and Jack Hylton, ours are the sound of their era. The music was the back-drop to events of world shattering significance. Take a listen to the sounds that grew out of New York, New Orleans, Paris and Berlin in the 1920’s. Hear to the growling trumpet, the muted trombone, the wailing clarinet glissando over the steady throb of the rhythm section, as the smoky shaft of spotlight picks out the white tux and red carnation of the singer.

When it comes to authentic Dance band/ early swing music, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra has no equal. It has always had access to the finest arrangements, the best musicians, and under the directorship of Band-leader and singer, DuncanGalloway, produces an immaculately presented show, full of fun, rhythm and laughter.

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra is a contemporary band from England that specialises in the jazz and swing genres of music of the 1920s and 1930s, although their full repertoire is considerably wider. The orchestra has existed since 1969, although the line-up has frequently changed. It has achieved success outside of the United Kingdom, most notably in Germany.

The Swing Sisters are a trio of female Danish singers who perform hit songs of the 1940s and earlier. The trio often pay tribute to The Andrews Sisters, as well as many others, such as The Boswell Sisters. They have collaborated with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra on several occasions. Two original albums by the Pasadena Roof Orchestra on one set, 'A Talking Picture' and 'Night Out', both of which were already recognised as inspirational works when they appeared in the late 1970s. Originating from the vinyl era, neither album has been issued on CD until now.

Founded in 1969, the The Pasadena Roof Orchestra has remained a permanent fixture on the music scene since then. They perform their own music - the kind of music America was dancing to from the 1920s to the 1940s, the original 'popular music'. The old standards are still popular to this day and the timeless quality of swing is something that has not eluded superstars like Robbie Williams or Michael Bublé.

What the musical director Duncan Galloway says: "Here are some classic Pasadena Roof Orchestra tracks which we have managed to secure from the archives. They are taken from early recordings, and include several tracks that have been 'resting' in the Orchestras library. It is slightly impractical for the current line-up to travel with over 2000 arrangements, so many of these tunes have not been played live for quite a while."

It´s the Year 1969. A man makes the first step on the moon. The BEATLES play their last concert. The first Woodstock happens ….

… and The Pasadena Roof Orchestra gets its licence to swing when over 1000 original dance band arrangements are discovered in an attic by founder-member, John Arthy. But you know that story, don´t you? And the rest - as they say – is history!
More than 40 years on from that incredible find, the orchestra´s reportoire has been shaken again – not stirred! The best 1920´s and 30´s tunes are the simple ingredients fort hat cocktail. So, sit back and take a sip of the orchestra´s new programme LICENCE TO SWING .

For over forty years the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, based in the UK, has delighted audiences all over the world with its mix of swing and hot dance music. Swing is much more than a musical genre, it personifies a lust for life, with its infectious beat. Its roots lie in the pre war dance bands, and the roaring twenties which inspired the later big swing bands. In contrast to many other musical genres swing has never really gone out of fashion over the decades, particularly in recent years. The Pasadena Roof Orchestra has played an important role in this resurgence of popularity.
In the past, the orchestra’s kind of music provided a boost in the background to some calamitous times, pre and post war. Today, not only is the orchestra bringing its music to young audiences all over the world, it is introducing new generations of young musicians to the music.

The reputation of the orchestra is as legendary in its own right, as the bands from the 1920’s and 1930’s that inspired it. 40 recorded vinyl LPs, singles, CDs, and DVDs containing over 300 titles have been released since 1974. The timeless sound of the orchestra has led to ever more recordings. In Japan the orchestra's first five vinyl albums have recently been rereleased in a CD format. When it comes to authentic swing music the orchestra has no equal. The orchestra performs year-round with a line up of eleven excellent jazz musicians who have perfected their craft and studied jazz at the top conservatories. Many years of working together with top class arrangements, result in the ensemble sound for which the orchestra is renowned. The show is presented in a way that not only showcases this talent, but adds some wit and humour. Duncan Galloway is the band-leader and vocalist and is also responsible for the musical direction. With a background in theatre and music, Duncan has been part of the orchestra for over ten years. The repertoire currently comprises over 200 titles of jazz, early swing and dance music from the era. The orchestra was founded in 1969 by the master baker John Arthy...

The velvet-throated master crooner Duncan Galloway and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra perform a set of classic tunes from the 1920s and 30s with guest vocalists Les Brunettes and Laura Fygi.  With its authentic 1920s and 30s music, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra has been selling-out concerts and playing at society dances for more than forty years. Using the original arrangements the eleven-piece band has earned itself a reputation for transporting the music forward into present times in a fashion both fascinating and true to the original spirit.

Today the music is as popular as it has ever been. Big stars such as Robbie Williams and Bryan Ferry have been delving back into classic jazz and the Great American Songbook and they, of course, have employed members of the band on their recordings and on tour in order to create that authentic sound. ~ http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ladies-Gentlemen-Pasadena-Roof-Orchestra/dp/B00F3MM710

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra have long been one of England's best hot dance bands. Usually the group concentrates more on music from the 1920s, but this CD finds the orchestra looking more toward the early swing era. Sounding much larger than their ten pieces, the ensemble (which features James Langston on vocals) revives such pieces as "My Baby Just Cares for Me," "Hong Kong Blues," Duke Ellington's "Double Check Stomp," "Hesitation Blues," and better-known tunes including "Truckin'," "After You've Gone," and "Let Yourself Go." The musicians solo well within the vintage style and fans of early jazz will enjoy this group's performances.
