Influenced by Nancy Wilson, Marlena Shaw and Sarah Vaughan, Denise King is an expressive, big-voiced singer who combines jazz with elements of R&B, blues and gospel. King was born and raised in Philadelphia, where she was exposed to R&B as a child and discovered jazz at 12 thanks to an uncle who was an avid record collector. After graduating from high school, the Philadelphian entered the medical field and earned her living as a technician and a family-planning counselor. King was in her early 30s when she started doing club gigs around Philly, and eventually, she became a full-time singer. Though she's no stranger to standards, one of King's strong points has been her ability to provide jazz interpretations of rock and soul hits -- in fact, she has turned everything from Santana's "Evil Ways" to Ruby & the Romantics' "Our Day Will Come" into swinging acoustic jazz. King started recording in the 1990s, offering Live In Japan: I Remember You in 1993, Now Ain't That Love in 1996 and Simply Mellow in 1997. ~by Alex Henderson

Ferdinando Faraò belongs to one of the few Italian jazz dynasties. The son of an amateur drummer, he is the brother of piano player Antonio Faraò and the cousin of piano player Massimo Faraò. Inspired by his father's wide collection of jazz records and captivated by a concert of Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald that he had seen in Milan at the age of 10, he started to study the drums with the support of his family. By the age of 20 he had become the in-house drummer at Capolinea, Milan's most important jazz venue. In the '80s he played in the Claudio Fasoli Quartet and accompanied many North American musicians that toured Italy, such as Lee Konitz, Mal Waldron, Sal Nistico and Bob Mover. In the '90s he joined the quintet of Italian singer Tiziana Ghiglioni and has been increasingly involved in special audio-visual projects. His recording career as a solo artist started relatively late, in 1997, with the album Listening Self, featuring Pietro Tonolo on saxophone, Piero Leveratto on double-bass and Franco D'Andrea on piano. Faraò is a subtle drummer that leads from the back rather than putting himself under the spotlight. Also at ease on percussion and xylophone, he can provide a versatile and wide aural palette.

A witty composer, he privileges midtempo compositions in which he often experiments with odd time signatures, sudden rhythmic shifts and sampling. Though constantly active as a sideman and teacher, Faraò didn't record as a leader again until 2004's large ensemble offering Eschersuite, the first album in a trilogy that was followed by Darwinsuite (2009) and Pollocksuite (2010). In 2015 he led the Artchipel Orchestra on the date Play Soft Machine and enlisted them again along with drummer Chris Cutler for To Lindsay: Omaggio A Lindsay Cooper. ~ Luigi Santosuosso https://www.allmusic.com/artist/ferdinando-fara%C3%B2-mn0001342062/biography

Legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb, was born in Washington, D.C. on January 20, 1929. A superb, mostly self-taught musician, Jimmy is the elder statesman of all of the incredible Miles Davis bands. Jimmy's inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned 1957 until 1963, and included the masterpiece “Kind of Blue”, the most popular jazz recording in history. He also played on “Sketches of Spain”, Someday My Prince will Come”, “Live at Carnegie Hall, “Live at the Blackhawk”, “Porgy and Bess”, and many, many other watermark Miles Davis recordings. The Miles recordings and live performances are not the only high points of Jimmy's quiet, but truly outstanding career. Jimmy did his first recording with Earl Bostic. Known from an early age as a great accompanist, Jimmy played extensively with Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Pearl Bailey, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderly, before joining Miles in 1957. Tony Williams took over the Miles drum chair in 1963 and Jimmy left Miles to continue to work with Miles' rhythm section, Winton Kelly and Paul Chambers behind Wes Montgomery. In addition to several Winton Kelly Trio Albums, the three did albums with Kenny Burrell, and J.J. Johnson, among others, before disbanding in the late 60's. Mr. Cobb then worked with Sarah Vaughn for 9 years. Jimmy then continued to freelance with several great groups throughout the 70's 80's and 90's including, Sonny Stitt, Nat Adderly, Ricky Ford, Hank Jones, Ron Carter, George Coleman, Fathead Newman, The Great Jazz Trio, Dave Holland and Warren Bernhardt, and many, many others worldwide. (see list on succeeding pages).

Eleana Tee produced a Television Special “So that Nobody Else Can Hear”, which aired on AandE in the early 90's featuring Jimmy playing and hangin' with Freddie Hubbard, Gregory Hines, Bill Cosby, Dave Leibman, Pee Wee Ellis, and others. Jimmy has played around the world from Newport to Monte Carlo, from LA to Japan. He has performed for President Carter, the Shah of Iran and many other dignitaries in his storied career and is quoted extensively in “Kind of Blue”, the Documentary of those legendary recording sessions. Now: Currently, Jimmy is not slowing down even a little. He splits any downtime between his New York City “digs” and his home in Woodstock, NY with his two children, Jaime and Serena, and long time partner and collaborator, Eleana Tee. However, he still tours with his own band, “Cobb's Mob” and combines with many incredible artists both old and new. Jimmy has just completed a “Four Generations of Miles” album with guitarist, Mike Stern, Ron Carter (bass), and George Coleman (tenor) for Chesky records. Jimmy is about to release his newest and long awaited solo album, “Yesterdays”, produced by Eleana Tee for Rteesan Productions. It features Michael Brecker on tenor, Marion Meadows on soprano, Roy Hargrove, trumpet and flugelhorn, Jon Faddis, trumpet, Eric Lewis, electric piano, Peter Bernstein, guitar, Jerry Mall, percussion and John Weber on bass. This album was done in Jimmy's two adopted home towns; recorded and shot in New York, and mixed and edited in Woodstock, NY. It includes a wide variety of arrangements ranging from a unique interpretation of Jimi Hendrix “Purple Haze” to ballads “Yesterdays” and blues (All Blues, Faddis, Monk) and standards, “Without a Song” and “Love Walked Right In”. This major musical statement will include several music videos and a complete television documentary. And as usual with Jimmy Cobb, you won't believe what's up next! https://musicians.allaboutjazz.com/jimmycobb

Denise King is a singer whose naturally beautiful voice, vibrato and phrasing please musicians as well as fans. Listening to her warm tone, impeccable phrasing, and the absolute control she has of her voice is mesmerizing. Whether she’s singing a Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan standard, or an Aretha Franklin cover, she puts her heart and soul into every note. Denise has mastered the art of making a song her own no matter what the genre.

In the past 25 years, Ms King has sung at almost all of the top venues in Philadelphia, several in New York, Paris, Turkey, Brazil, Africa, Germany and Japan. She is a self-proclaimed torch bearer, a keeper of the flame holding the preservation and presentation of the traditional style of jazz singing close to her heart. No gimmicks, no pyrotechnics, just an intense focus on the melody and the lyrical content.

With a voice described as velvet smooth, warm and steeped in sophistication, she captivates you and holds you with every note. In this age of auto-tune, quick fixes and artistic gimickery, her love of people, performance style, and energy have ensured her a spot in the jazz community for a long time.

"Denise King sings pop and jazz standards with touches of the blues, soul and even gospel in a voice steeped in a sophisticated, swinging, sometimes soulful, satin style much like one of her idols, Sarah Vaughan." ~ All About Jazz

One of the more beautiful, more subtle settings we've ever heard for the tenor of Jerry Weldon – a very relaxed ballad session cut with pianist Massimo Farao – done with crystal-clear sound, and a very late nite vibe! Over the years, Weldon's developed a really tremendous voice on the tenor – a mode that hearkens back to old giants of mid-century, but which also never does so in any sort of slavish, or easily-retro style – so that although Jerry's blowing at their level, he still really brings a lot of his own phrasing to the horn! This can be especially true on the mellower numbers, which can still have Weldon moving with the deft changes he brings to his work in a more driving setting – and while the piano of Massimo Farao is a perfect balance in terms of modesty and simple tone, it's really Jerry's work on the set that's blowing us away.

Denise King is a Philadelphia vocalist who has made the world her oyster with her unique ability to navigate between rhythm and blues and sultry jazz standards. Discovered in the 1980s by an R&B songwriter-producer, King quickly found her way in the City of Brotherly Love with some of the top musicians in both popular and jazz settings. In the New Millennium, she has been shuttling back and forth between the U.S. and Europe delivering stellar performances on both continents. With her smooth and sultry voice, impeccable sense of timing, interpretive depth, and immersion in the tradition of the great singers, King brings out the best in any genre. For example, in just one of her albums, Fever, she is equally at home with Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave," the unsung ballad, "Never Let Me Go," the Shirelles' pop song, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," and the rocking "I've Got My Mojo Workin.'" She takes each song on its own merit while adding her unmistakable personal stamp. Among her various projects, she does a traveling Tribute to Sarah Vaughan, one of her idols with whom she shares many fine qualities. King also has a strong personality and life story that can be entertaining and at the same time cut deeply into the soul. ~by Victor L. Schermer

~ Alex Henderson

Bobby Durham (February 3, 1937 – July 6, 2008) was an American jazz drummer. Durham was born in Philadelphia and learned to play drums while a child. He played with The Orioles at age 16, and was in a military band between 1956 and 1959. After his discharge he played with King James and Stan Hunter. In 1960 he moved to New York City, where he played with Lloyd Price, Wild Bill Davis, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Slide Hampton, Grant Green, Sweets Edison, Tommy Flanagan, Jimmy Rowles, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, in which he played for five years. While working with Basie he met Al Grey, and was a member of several of Grey's small ensembles.

He accompanied Ella Fitzgerald for more than a decade, and worked with Oscar Peterson in a trio setting. Durham also played in trios with organists such as Charles Earland and Shirley Scott, and there was a resurgence in interest in Durham's work during the acid jazz upswing in the 1990s. Many of Durham's projects, both as sideman and as leader, have come due to his association with producer Norman Granz, who had him work with Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Harry Edison, Flanagan, and Joe Pass. Durham has led his own combos as well; he is noted for scat singing along with his drum solos. Durham has also performed often with pop and soul musicians such as Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Ray Charles, and Marvin Gaye. He died in Genoa, Italy, aged 71. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Durham_%28jazz_musician%29

Recorded at Pianopiano Studios in Torino on February 11, 12, & 13, 2014.

Massimo Farao is an outstanding pianist who has performed with Nat Adderley, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Red Holloway, Tony Scott, Franco Ambrosetti, Jack DeJohnette, Chris Potter, and many more.

Autumn Leaves was recorded in a three day session in February 2014. The quality of each track is incredibly high. Farao's ardent style and passion are extremely appealing along with the plentiful harmonies he creates. The notes he plays are sparse, his arrangements are effortless, and the notes he does choose are beautiful. All of Farao's music--with his reliable ear for swing--exudes happiness.
