Inger Marie Gundersen has released her 5th recording, entitled “Feels Like Home.” She made her bandleading and recording debut relatively late in life in 2004 with “Make This Moment,” which immediately rose to the top of the more jazz-oriented vocal charts. This was especially true in Asia, where the albums sold by the thousands in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia. “By Myself” followed in 2006, “My Heart Would Have a Reason” in 2009, “For You” in 2011, and over the years, Inger Marie has also been “discovered” in Europe and the United States, where many of her songs are popular on streaming services’ playlists. Inger Marie has her own voice - dark, warm, heartfelt, and engaging - and she has always had a great sense for choosing exactly the right material, oftentimes well-known pop or rock songs, which she transforms into her own in her unique, hot, jazzy universe. In this universe, Inger Marie has always surrounded herself with the very best musicians, so the sound never gets oversimplified or lacks in depth. There’s time for reflection on “Feels Like Home,” and at a relaxed tempo we are pulled into Inger Marie’s wonderful world of versions of famous songs such as the Creedence Clearwater Revival hit, “Long as I Can See the Light,” Abba’s “When All Is Said and Done,” Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ On The Dock of the Bay,” and many more, after which listeners are treated to the beautiful Swedish song “Med ögon känsliga för grönt” (With Eyes Sensitive to Green) by Barbor Hörberg and Nils Hansén. Inger Marie’s personal and loving interpretations form images that, together with the musical arrangements, create alluring landscape paintings in the minds of the listener. Life isn’t always easy, but it feels good as long as you can see the light. Inger Marie Gundersen was born in the small town of Arendal, on the southern coast of Norway, on February 13th, 1957. She grew up as an only child with her parents, close to nature and in a peaceful environment. Her fascination and joy for music began in early childhood, with her father playing guitar and singing, filling their home with songs nearly every day. When she was young, Inger Marie studied at the University of Agder, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Social Work. Ultimately, she always knew she really was a singer, and was on a musician’s path. Inger Marie waited for many years before she ventured out upon a solo career. She had ample experience though, from years of activities in the musical industry.

During some downtime from watching American Idol on the eight nights it seems to be on each week, I was able to listen to Make This Moment by vocalist Inger Marie Gundersen. The album is a nice reminder that vocal performances do not always have to be unbridled exhibitions of melismatic acrobatics. Indeed the hallmark of the album is an admirable restraint, and even austerity in the vocals and instrumentation. Make This Moment features a unique mix of new songs, standards, and classic pop/rock offerings. "Let It Be Me, popularized by the Everly Brothers, doesn't necessarily lend itself to extended improvisation, but it does give Gundersen the chance to caress the lovely melody with her smoky voice. She also offers a tender version of the perennial "Always On My Mind. Gundersen's band offers sympathetic, yet unobtrusive support. A medley of "Fool on the Hill and "Nature Boy features a sensitive saxophone solo by Øivind G. Stømer, who is the son of Gundersen. However, for the most part, the performances remain lean and free of any showy solos. The focus is on the songs. Make This Moment is an encouraging debut solo recording by a promising talent. Gundersen and her band treat their material with the utmost respect and delicacy. The album is a refreshingly tasteful affair. ~ Stephen Latessa https://www.allaboutjazz.com/make-this-moment-inger-marie-gundersen-kultur-and-spetakkel-review-by-stephen-latessa.php

Inger Marie’s third CD release proves that the success of her previous two albums was no coincidence. She and her new collaborator, producer and guitarist Georg Wadenius, have handpicked a selection of extremely wellsuited songs, which she and her band  and featured guest, trumpeter Mathias Eick  perform to near perfection. Norwegian jazz diva Inger Marie Gundersen spreads a con- tagious mood of unstressed wellbeing. Her style is relaxed and her vocal phrasing is rock-steady. Once you’ve heard her interpret one of the songs that are so dear to her heart, her voice will never be a stranger to you. Few European fema- le vocalists can match her penetrating charisma. Her art is deeply embedded in her own original musical world. Her sound is personal, and she has the courage to choose tunes from a broader palette than the usual American Songbook. This selection includes her own originals as well as songs by Norwegian colleagues and composers from the outskirts of jazz such as Sting and Bob Marley. Inger Marie strikes a seductive, blue, vibrant note and leaves her audience with a luscious velvety, dusty feeling. Such is the smooth and credible sound of an experienced woman  it is the sound of reflection, love and longing. She administers her extraordinary vocal talent with authority.

Inger Marie does not take a new release lightly. For her, a new CD is an important and very personal undertaking   indeed it is so important, that her first solo album is only a few years back. But her following has been growing quickly ever since. Surprisingly, Asia was first to discover her great talent. She has sold thousands of units there and toured extensively. Her enga- gements include weeklong gigs at Tokyo’s Cotton Club. At home in Norway and in Denmark, where her recording label resides, and all over Europe and in the US, her audiences grow daily. The musicians on My Heart Would Have a Reason are almost exactly the same as on her first two albums (Make This Moment, 2004 and By Myself, 2006), and listening to the music, it is obvious that Inger Marie feels at home in their company. The band is: Oscar Jansen (piano/ Rhodes), Ole Kristian Kvamme (bass), Tom Rudi Torjussen (drums/percussion), Øivind G. Stømer (alto and soprano sax), Mathias Eick (trumpet) and Georg Wadenius (guitar). Swedish Georg Wadenius plays a definitive role as producer and co-arranger as well as with his tasteful musicianship on acoustic and electric guitar. Wadenius has been a professional musician since 1968. He soon became one of Sweden’s most popular session musi- cians, but moved to USA in the early ‘70s to join Blood Sweat and Tears. Once again his reputation grew swiftly, and over the years he worked with a wide range of acts inclu- ding Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Donald Fagen, Michael Franks, Backstreet Boys and many others. The seasoned Georg Wadenius has now returned to Scandinavia, and his collaboration with Inger Marie has resulted in this remarkable album. http://www.challengerecords.com/products/1238593562/

Inger Marie Gundersen is a vocalist from Arendal in Norway. After years singing in rock bands and big bands, trying out different styles of music, Inger Marie has found a home in jazz. Her Debut CD “Make this moment” was released in Norway in October 2004 and it has been well recieved. The song “Will you still love me tomorrow” became a hit on the popular Norwegian radio channel P1.

Experience and dedication:
Inger Marie waited for many years before she ventured upon a solo career, but she has ample experience from many years’ activities in the music field. For twenty years she has been active as vocalist in several bands, ranging from a youthful rock band to a six year period as lead singer of a jazz big band. She has also fronted her own jazz quintet ”My Favoite Strings”, as well as collaborating with several excellent jazz musicans, among them Tom Lund, one of Norway’s finest latin jazz-guitarists, founder of the renowned group ”Trio de Janeiro”.

Recording debut:
Having thus gathered a lot of experience and ”paid her dues”, Inger Marie finally decided to enter the studio to record her debut solo CD ”Make This Moment”. The time was right. Years of singing had matured her voice into an instrument of impressive sensitivity and perfection. Producer Lars Martin Myhre, himself a brilliant musician and a major artist in Norway, says that never has he got a bigger surprise than the one he got when Inger Marie started singing in the studio. She was displaying a voice so controlled, so beautiful and so personal at her first recording date, that the seasoned producer was left with his mouth open, stunned in admiration of the awareness and the warm and direct communication in her voice. ~ Bio...
