A successful voiceover performer, model, and professional actress, with a commanding presence onstage, Paulette Dozier is also an exciting vocalist with a sultry appeal. In Walked You, her third full-length solo disc, reveals the tender side of the singer in a wonderfully charming album that combines standards from Great American Songbook with pop classic and original tunes from the vocalist and longtime collaborator and friend, pianist Mike Levine. Dozier's smooth and sensual delivery seems to be a defining characteristic, distinguishing her from the plethora of female vocalists that dot the jazz landscape these days. Her approach to "The Days of Wine and Roses," "Autumn Leaves" and Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," shine new light to oft-recorded masterpieces, painted with new colors and feel. Her knack for scatting and the impressive musical support from Levine, electric violinist Nicole Yarling and bassist extraordinaire Jamie Ousley, among others, provide a stylish, light and pleasurable listening experience. Bobby Hebb's pop classic "Sunny" gets a fresh new treatment from Dozier, with amid-tempo romp aided by solid solo work from flautist Domenica Fossati, and the vocalist adding more sultry scatting for an interesting twist. John Fogerty's Creedence Clearwater Revival classic, "Proud Mary," is a rock tune rarely found in jazz circles and yet, here, the singer leaves her softer side behind and comes out swinging with the help of drummer Sammy Levine, and alto saxophonist Jesse Jones Jr. providing the fiery edge. Harold Arlen's immortal "Let's Fall In Love" is one of the sweetest numbers of the set, with Dozier demonstrating her power and vocal range in a superb performance. The original "With You" and Seals and Crofts' "Summer Breeze" close out a truly breezy performance from one of the most unheralded jazz vocalists around. Whether displaying a mastery of beautiful ballads or churning out a swinging song with a measure of sizzle, Dozier crafts a splendidly enchanting musical statement on In Walked You, the kind of jazz vocals album that bears sampling often. ~ Edward Blanco https://www.allaboutjazz.com/in-walked-you-paulette-dozier-d-enterprises-inc-review-by-edward-blanco.php

Paulette Dozier - Over & Over Again

Right out of the gate the listener will know that singer Paulette Dozier is an entertainer. The fact can readily be heard in her perfectly balanced alto, a voice crisp and confident, a voice that serves her well. The second thing the listener will note is Dozier employs a crack band and arranger in pianist Mike Levine, who proves no rear in his mixing of pop and jazz. Over & Over Again is Dozier's second self-produced recording, her first being her 2006 With You, a release characterized by the same fine craftsmanship as the newer release. Paulette Dozier turns out to be the authentic item, singer, stage performer, provocateur. Dozier mixes old and new standards with an emphasis on the new.

Two Chicago songs are covered in "Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is" and "Saturday in the Park" (featuring a piquant David Carder trumpet) each deliver faithful to the original but with jazz authority and grace. Another "new standard" is Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," performed up tempo with verve. Saxophonist Ed Calle shows up on the disc opener, "You'll Never Know." He lends a genre-stretching solo to the piece that places it on the fulcrum between pop and jazz. Dozier's own "Over and Over Again" is a sexy playful piece not bashful in expressing the singer's intentions, just as Dozier's take on Van Morrison's "Moondance." Dozier turns the tables on the boy's club and shows that she can give as good as she gets. Over & Over Again is a full-bodied treatment of originals and standard set in thoroughly modern arrangements that never allow the material to descend in to the tepid smooth jazz waters. Paulette Dozier must really be something live. ~ C.Michael Bailey  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/over-and-over-again-paulette-dozier-self-produced-review-by-c-michael-bailey.php#.VCyOkBawTP8

The name Dozier is no stranger to the music industry and Paulette Dozier continues the legacy bringing her own unique style to the songs she interprets. Paulette is keenly drawn to nostalgic songs of the 40s, and with contemporary rhythms to revitalize the sound, new flavor is added to all of her tunes taken from the golden era.

Paulette's contribution to producing original music has always been as a lyricist. When writing in collaboration with her pianist, Mike Levine, Paulette finds inspiration through his skillful style of playing reminiscent of legendary greats like Earl Hines. Levine's old school technique brings out the best in her, and knowing how much she enjoys creating new riffs, he gives her the measures to express herself. Mike dresses their songs with a hint of soul, a touch of gospel and lots of jazz while Paulette draws on her romantic experiences to define the essence of their tunes. Her fondness for 40s music and his playing style make a winning combination for rejuvenating timeless classics and creating songs destined to become classics.

Dozier has been singing professionally since the age of 23 and she feels that venue variety is one of the keys to building a great performer. What makes her the engrossing entertainer that she is is her experience having performed in a range of venues including those from the small, over crowded, smokey nightclub where brushing up against an overly enthusiastic spectator was expected; to forums that house 20,000 screaming fans like El Poliedro de Caracas. Either place, she commands the stage and has always been highly appreciated by those who see her in action.

This eye-catching jazz stylist and scat singer is quite versatile in the talent arena. She's also an actress, model and voiceover performer. Yet, it doesn't matter if she's contracted for a role in a theater musical, hired to lead a flamboyant revue or simply relaxing in a laid back jam session with a musician like guitarist Paco de Lucia, her signature jazz style accompanies her.

Paulette Dozier is a grand performer who builds upon an old school foundation with drive, and she is definitely an act not to be missed.  http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/paulettedozier
