By 1983, the only original member remaining from the first Great Jazz Trio was pianist Hank Jones, though this CD is the best overall among the many put out under the group's name. Predominantly a Gershwin songbook, the trio (with Eddie Gomez on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums) brings out the best in Jones' swinging arrangements, especially "S' Wonderful" and "Our Love Is Here to Stay." Violinist Lewis Eley is added on several numbers, including an elegant "Autumn in New York" and a lush "Isn't It Romantic," though his style is closer to classical than jazz. But it is Jones' playing that makes this CD particularly worth acquiring. ~ Ken Dryden https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-club-new-yorker-mw0000649543

Hank Jones is one of the most gifted jazz pianists of the second half of the 20th century, and this salute to Duke Ellington is only slightly blemished by the sometimes overbearing string arrangements by Masahiko Satoh. His trio, with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jimmy Cobb, sticks to familiar selections from the vast Ellington songbook, with Jones occasionally switching to a Fender Rhodes electric piano or celeste. Happily the strings are omitted from cookers such as "C Jam Blues" and "Take the 'A' Train." The Great Jazz Trio was a working cooperative working with various lineups led by Hank Jones in during the 1970s and 1980s, but the revival of this defunct group finds Jones joined by two newcomers to the group, seasoned veterans Richard Davis on bass and the leader's brother, Elvin Jones, on drums. Oddly enough, the two brothers have recorded together very infrequently during their long careers, so this opportunity must have been special to them. The opening track signals a different direction for the group, with Elvin's explosive solo stealing the show in "Autumn Leaves." The pianist's imaginative arrangement of "Yesterdays" begins as a stunning solo before Davis' sparse bass and Elvin's brushes join him. The buoyant treatment of Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa" finds Hank in a humorous mood, inserting several brief quotes from well-known works such as "Hot House" and "Blue Skies." The trio is clearly cooking by the time it recorded the percolating take of Oliver Nelson's "Six and Four." Hopefully, this delightful date by the Great Jazz Trio will result in a follow-up recording session. ~ Ken Dryden https://www.allmusic.com/album/autumn-leaves-mw0000318396

Great Jazz Trio: Hank Jones, Mads Vinding, Billy Hart - Standard Collection Vols. 1 & 2

Billy Hart (drums) & Hank Jones (piano) & Mads Vinding (bass).

Pianist Hank Jones has had quite a few editions of the Great Jazz Trio, from the original with Tony Williams and Ron Carter in 1975 to the latest with John Patitucci and Omar Hakim (2006; VRCL-18835). The Great Jazz Trio with Danish bassist Mads Vinding and drummer Billy Hart, formed in 1998, was the fourth edition.

In 2007, Japanese label Pony Canyon took materials recorded by the fourth GJT between 1988 and 1990, remastered with the latest DSD technology and released them as three compilation CDs: Prelude to a Kiss, Stardust, and My Funny Valentine, with subtitles "The Greatest Hits of Standards Vol. 1, 2, and 3," respectively. Selections of familiar standards are played beautifully by the maestro and his superb supporting cast. The talented Mads Vinding is given generous solo spaces and shows his lyrical abilities. While not ground-breaking, each performance is crafted with impeccable taste and an elengat sense of swing. Piano trio fans will not be disappointed!

The Great Jazz Trio - Someday My Prince Will Come

Founded in 1976 by Hank Jones, the Great Jazz Trio produced several recordings and changed bassists and drummers frequently. This album marks the final studio recording for brothers Hank and Elvin Jones together. Elvin, who is heard here in his prime, soloing frequently and coloring everything admirably, passed away in May at age 76. The trio interprets these chestnuts with authority. As Richard Davis reiterates "Moose the Mooche" with bowed bass, he applies his personal zeal to the formula. Both bass and drums solo frequently, giving this trio session its equilateral charm. When Hank Jones expounds upon "Satin Doll" or "Someday My Prince Will Come," it's not like anything you've heard before. His creativity continues to produce vibrant improvisations unlike the standard treatment. The pianist renews himself every time out. His lush harmony and delicate touch give the audience just enough. Spontaneous left hand chord adjustments provide unexpected surprises on "Satin Doll" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes."

The latter is performed a cappella. The Great Jazz Trio has given us the best of three worlds. Elvin Jones provides remarkable drum set action with a variety of textures. Richard Davis adds bowed and pizzicato thrills that respect these time-honored melodies. And Hank Jones continues to preach the gospel of bebop candidly, with an unforgettable charm. ~ Jim Santella  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/someday-my-prince-will-come-eighty-eights-review-by-jim-santella.php

Great Jazz Trio - Flowers for Lady Day

Styles: Piano Jazz
Year: 1991

(5:51)  8. I'm a fool to want you
(4:32)  9. Time warp
(7:21) 10. Don't explain

When you name your group the Great Jazz Trio, you generally run the risk of being called arrogant and had better have a lot to back it up. But if your trio consists of pianist Hank Jones, drummer Roy Haynes, and bassist George Mraz, that name isn't an example of arrogance or conceit -- it's a statement of fact. Forming a very cohesive trio, Jones, Haynes, and Mraz pay tribute to Billie Holiday on Flowers for Lady Day. This 1991 session finds the veteran improvisers embracing mostly songs that Holiday recorded, including "Lover Man" and "Don't Explain" both of which she defined. However, you won't hear "Gloomy Sunday," "My Man," "Good Morning, Heartache," "Strange Fruit," or "God Bless the Child" on this CD  most of the other songs are standards that Holiday recorded but didn't necessarily define. "I'm A Fool to Want You," for example, was defined by Frank Sinatra and while Lady Day recorded a superb hit version of "Easy Living" in 1937, her version wasn't the only famous one. Nonetheless, the Great Jazz Trio's affection for Holiday's legacy comes through loud and clear. Post-swing pianism doesn't get much more lyrical and melodic than Jones, and his interpretations of melodies that Holiday embraced are every bit as rewarding as one would expect. Flowers for Lady Day is easily recommended to Holiday and Jones fans alike. ~ Alex Henderson   http://www.allmusic.com/album/flowers-for-lady-day-mw0000181197
