Bass player John Patitucci is the musical equivalent of a Porsche: an incredibly fast, technically awesome machine capable of handling a variety of terrain with aplomb. Yet, as his opening set Wednesday night at Elario’s proved, a high-tech machine makes it easy to race through beautiful terrain without pausing to enjoy the scenery. Often, Patitucci didn’t leave sufficient space between his prodigious bursts on his six-string instrument to let the capacity crowd of 120 fully appreciate them. The 30-year-old Wunderkind , who made his initial mark with keyboardist Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, is appearing nightly through Sunday, with a crack band that includes former Weather Report drummer Alex Acuna, Steve Tavaglione on tenor sax and EWI (electronic wind instrument), and John Beasley on keyboards and synthesizer. The band proved to be the ideal setting for Patitucci and his unusual bass, which covers a range from deep, rumbling lows to highs that cross into guitar territory. With Beasley occasionally handling bass parts on synthesizer, Patitucci was free to roam his instrument’s broad neck, producing melodic inventions with amazing speed and fluidity. The group opened with “On the Corner” from Patitucci’s album by the same name, a fast-paced tune that resembles some of the 1980s music made by trumpeter Miles Davis. Patitucci has the snapping, popping funk sound down pat, and he alternated between anchoring the bottom and producing incredibly fast guitar-like lines. On the EWI, Tavaglione ranged from the wail of a soprano sax to a bluesy harmonica sound. The lazy-tempoed “Searching Finding” found Patitucci and Tavaglione doubling up on sections of catchy signature melody, with band members trading solos in between.“Peace and Quiet Time” provided some slower, romantic moments, with Tavaglione and Patitucci again doubling on the melody, this time with a moody, minor sound reminiscent of the Yellowjackets or Weather Report. Patitucci’s playing was especially delicate here. He used a combination of finger picking and wavering vibrato to produce a full sound well-suited to this ballad, as Acuna drove the tune with lightening flourishes on cymbals. The remainder of the set came mostly from Patitucci’s third album, “Sketchbook,” released this year. Tavaglione’s EWI shone on “Scophile,” opening the tune with deep-fathomed blasts that sounded like the sound track from a documentary on whales, proceeding to screaming, guitar-like licks on this tribute to guitarist John Scofield. As if his mastery of six-string bass isn’t enough, Patitucci hoisted an acoustic bass for the set’s last two tunes, going solo for the rhythmically driving “Backwoods,” joining the band again to close the set with “ ‘Trane.” On the larger, more cumbersome instrument, he didn’t lose a step. Unquestionably, Patitucci is the rising young lion of electric bass guitar, and you won’t find him in a tighter band than this one. But now that he has achieved phenomenal technical prowess, a little restraint would heighten the impact of his playing. With chops like his, there is no need for excessive engine revving. He needs to remember that it’s nice to mix high-speed joy rides with scenic Sunday drives. Patitucci continues at Elario’s through Sunday. Shows tonight and Saturday are at 9, 10:30 and midnight. Tickets are $7.50. On Sunday, shows are at 8:30 and 10:30, and tickets are $5.~  DIRK SUTRO https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-12-07-me-6048-story.html

Despite playing many songs with geographic titles and including a map of the world in the liners, keyboardist Don Grusin's release is not about world music. The performances are actually overly safe and uniformly easy-listening with upbeat melodies, highly competent but anonymous players and gentle background vocalists; only "Rai Baby" generates a little heat. There is little excuse for such bland music from such talented musicians as Grusin, altoist Eric Marienthal, guitarist Ricard Silveira and violinist Jerry Goodman, making this date a distinct disappointment. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/no-borders-mw0000612509

Marilyn Scott - Nightcap

Over the course of seven previous recordings, while establishing herself as a premier adult contemporary singer/songwriter, Marilyn Scott has carried on a quiet but steady love affair with the Great American Songbook. Her rendition of "The Look of Love" (from 1998's Avenues of Love) earned producer George Duke a Grammy nomination for Best Arrangement with vocals. Earlier recordings feature stunning versions of the classics "Let Me Be the One," "The Summer Knows," and "You Don't Know Me." On this much too short but still very satisfying collection, Scott's flirtation with pop standards evolves beautifully into a life-changing romance with the help of some of Los Angeles' most acclaimed studio musicians and jazz performers Brandon Fields (sax), Rick Baptist (trumpet), Ray Fuller (guitar), Brian Bromberg (upright bass), Dan Higgins (flute), Brazilian guitarist Dori Caymmi, and Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). Nightcap also marks the first time that frequent collaborator Duke has produced and arranged an entire Scott recording. The choices are inspired, from the coolly swinging Brazilian romance of "I Wished on the Moon" (from the Billie Holiday catalog) to the tender trio arrangement of "Smile" and understated poetry of "Stardust" (featuring Duke on piano and Rhodes). Scott skips through a nice variety of moods the heartfelt melancholy of "Here's that Rainy Day" balancing the optimistic "Isn't This a Lovely Day," with her bright vocal cruising gracefully over Bromberg's throbbing bass. The soulful big-band brass textures on "If It's the Last Thing I Do" adds a classy closing touch. ~ Jonathan Widran http://www.allmusic.com/album/nightcap-mw0000166040

Personnel: Dori Caymmi (vocals, guitar); Dean Parks, Ray Fuller (guitar); Dan Higgins (flute, tenor saxophone); Brandon Fields (alto saxophone); Rick Baptist (trumpet); George Duke (keyboards); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion).

Kevyn Lettau - Bye-Bye Blackbird

With strings and the gentle acoustic guitar of Dori Caymmi, singer Kevyn Lettau interprets favorite songs for a standards album that's been a long time coming. She first recorded with Caymmi in 1988, before her eight-year stint with Sergio Mendes took her on a whirlwind adventure that colored her life's work with a Brazilian tinge. Possessing a smooth soprano voice that lends itself to romantic interpretation, Lettau gives her audience an armful of class. Songs by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Cy Coleman, and Harold Arlen bring her timeless message to a wide audience. Special circumstances, such as "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Being Green," give the album a heart-melting quality. The singer is at her best with a suave bossa nova or a sentimental ballad. Caymmi's musical arrangements ensure that she's given appropriate surroundings to color each of these pleasant melodies. Rhythm and harmony add a bit of depth, but it's the melody that comes at you full force as Lettau sends her message out clearly. Wordless melodies alternate with sensual lyrics to fit each concern. At times she turns the music inwardly and projects her voice less forcefully, resulting in an uneven session. Rubato passages, such as the intro to "Let's Fall in Love," leave the listener in a vacuum, wondering where all the stars have gone. Each piece picks up, however, as Lettau steers her vocal message comfortably with passion and with genuine interest. Like the smooth sensations that she delivered with Sergio Mendes, each of these lovely standards slips gently into our lives.~Jim Santella https://www.allaboutjazz.com/bye-bye-blackbird-kevyn-lettau-review-by-jim-santella.php

Carmen Bradford - With Respect

Carmen Bradford is a belter, a singer not afraid to show off her emotions or to occasionally go over the top. She toured with Count Basie's Orchestra for nine years but somehow never achieved much fame, only recording on a very irregular basis as a singer despite her strong musicality and powerful pipes. This set is a fine all-around showcase, featuring her with a variety of small groups including ensembles with either Cedar Walton or Donald Brown on piano. Among the other prominent players are vibraphonist Steve Nelson, guitarist Dori Caymmi, saxophonist Charles Owens, and (on a closing duet version of "Nature Boy") guitarist Michael O'Neill. Although it probably was not the best idea to perform "You'll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganini)" (since Ella owns it), Bradford sounds particularly strong on the more recent and obscure material, including Chick Corea's "High Wire," Cedar Walton's "Even Steven," and Red Mitchell's "Finally." Since she has not recorded all that often since this period, With Respect is still Carmen Bradford's definitive recording. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/with-respect-mw0000174309

Some of the coolest, most compelling work we've heard in years from Wanda Sa – a very spare, stripped-down session that really gets back to the roots of her music from the 60s! Wanda Sa has been reviving her bossa sound for the past decade or more, but most of those recordings often have a decidedly modern feel in some of the instrumental and production choices – while this album really goes for a classic vibe all the way through, as Wanda sings beautifully without any extra trappings, and plays guitar with this sublime sense of tone and color to really illuminate the lyrics! The music has some extra backings, too – but really in a light, small combo bossa mode – save for some points when Sa is joined by Marcos Valle, Joao Donato, and Carlos Lyra – all of whom approach the project in a similar way. Titles include "O Que E Amar", "Novo Acorde", "Vagamente", "Ciume", "Pra Sempre", "Minha Saudade/Bim Bom", and "E Nada Mais". Also features bonus tracks with appearances from Jane Monheit and Dori Caymmi!
