Declaring "I'm the Last of the Red Hot Mamas" in one of her best-known songs, Sophie Tucker created a brassy, bawdy persona that made her a smashing success on the vaudeville circuit and the musical stage. Tucker was born Sonia Kalish on January 13, 1884, as her Jewish parents were fleeing Russia for Poland and, by the time Sophie was three, the United States; the family took the last name Abuza as a cover during their flight. After a spell in Boston, her parents opened a restaurant in Hartford, Connecticut, where young Sophie met many a vaudeville entertainer and picked up spare change singing for them and other customers. Sophie married a man named Louis Tuck at age 16 and had a son, Albert, a year later, at which point Tuck left her. Changing her married name to Tucker to produce her stage name, Sophie moved to New York to pursue a singing career, initially performing at small cafés and beer halls. Tucker eventually got an agent, who helped her break into vaudeville in 1906. At the behest of her handlers, she usually worked in blackface early in her career, under the logic that since she was rather generously built and plain of face, her audiences might not otherwise take to her.

In 1909, Tucker landed a job with the Ziegfeld Follies; she was a headlining act by 1911, and when she finally dropped the blackface act in favor of gaudy costumes and began adding traditional Yiddish songs to her repertoire of risqué comic songs, sentimental ballads, and ragtime numbers, she allayed all unfounded fears about her appearance and became more popular than ever. 1911 also saw the first recording of one of Tucker's signature songs, "Some of These Days." During World War I, Tucker adopted jazz stylings and toured with a small group called the Five Kings of Syncopation; she also played from 1914-1917 with second husband Frank Westphal, a pianist, but their marriage dissolved over his jealousy of her popularity.

In 1919, Tucker landed her first Broadway role in Shubert Gaieties; two years later, she hired as musical director pianist Ted Shapiro, who would accompany her for the next 40 years, writing a great deal of her bawdier material as well. She made her first of many trips to London in 1922, starring in the revue Round in 50. Tucker scored hits in the 1920s with songs like a re-recording of "Some of These Days," "I'm the Last of the Red Hot Mamas," and "My Yiddishe Momme," the latter two co-written by Jack Yellen, a regular contributor whom Tucker paid a regular salary plus commissions. As motion pictures began to rob vaudeville of its audience, Tucker tried to make the leap herself; she made her film debut in Honky Tonk in 1929, but the next year went to London to star in the musical comedy Follow a Star. For the next few years, she alternated London stage appearances with occasional films like Gay Love (1936), Broadway Melody of 1938 (1937), and Thoroughbreds Don't Cry (1937). Tucker also appeared in several more Broadway shows, including Leave It to Me (1938), Gay Paree, and High Kickers (1941).

Tucker's fame gradually diminished over the years; aside from occasional motion picture and television appearances, she spent most of her time performing in nightclubs, preferring the more intimate atmosphere and audience interaction. Her repertoire in later years often included half-spoken philosophical songs, which helped hide her vocal decline somewhat. Tucker devoted much of her income to various charities and frequently performed at benefit concerts. Sophie Tucker died on February 9, 1966, three years after becoming the subject of the biographical musical Sophie. ~by Steve Huey

Live at Chautauqua, Volume 1 captures Ella Fitzgerald in concert in July 1968. Accompanied by the Tee Carson trio, the eclectic programme ranges from her 1938 breakthrough hit "A-Tisket A-Tasket" through to contemporary pop and Broadway tunes, taking in some selections from her famed songbook series along the way. As Ella explains on her introduction to "Sunny," her intention is "to do something for everyone." While her forays into contemporary pop would sometimes prove unwise, the blend of new tunes with tried and true standards on Live at Chautauqua is groovy, swinging and cohesive.

1968 was a transitional year for Ella. In May she fulfilled her obligations to Capitol Records by recording 30 by Ella, which, though certainly not her best album, was an improvement on the three mediocrities she had previously laid down for the label. None of her Capitol albums were significant commercial successes; producer Dave Dexter's plan to make her relevant to younger audiences had failed. But where Dexter's productions find the singer warbling her way through cloying country tunes and dreary spirituals, Ella gets with it in a far more satisfying and appropriate way on her tour with Carson, due in a large part to savvy song choices. Tony Bennett's "For Once in My Life," an obvious candidate for jazz interpretation, sounds like it was written for her: the marriage of a pretty melody with a vulnerable, innocent persona yearning for love and fulfillment recalls her earlier success with numbers like "Misty" and "Something to Live For." Another relatively new tune, "On a Clear Day" (from the 1965 Broadway production On a Clear Day You Can See Forever), is given a searing Latin jazz treatment and doesn't sound at all ephemeral despite basking in a slow and sensual late sixties groove. As if to insist on its atemporality and place it among the classics, Ella quite seamlessly interpolates lines from Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" and the Gershwins' "A Foggy Day." Slinky and seductive, the ten-minute medley based around "Sunny" and "Goin' Out of My Head" demonstrates that the hit parade could still offer something to singers like Ella. Michel Legrand's "Watch What Happens" has a sleek bossa nova beat which suits the melody, though this performance isn't as impressive as the dazzling version that would appear on Ella's next album release, Sunshine of Your Love.

The standards on Live at Chautauqua include a cool "I'm Beginning to See the Light," which takes its cues from Quincy Jones' stellar arrangement of the number for Ella's 1963 meeting with Count Basie, Ella and Basie. The singer takes us for a hard swinging romp on "The Object of My Affection," while Cole Porter's "It's All Right with Me" is fast and urgent and threatens to swing out of orbit. She makes some exquisite note choices on "Midnight Sun," a stunning ballad that popped up in her concert repertoire from time to time after she first recorded it in 1957 for the album Like Someone in Love. A tense and restrained performance, singer and trio carefully pitch their intensity to get the level of tenderness just right.

No Ella concert would be complete without a scat set piece, and no Ella performance of the mid to late sixties could be without some Antonio Carlos Jobim. On Live at Chautauqua, she kills two birds with one stone by scatting up a storm on "One Note Samba." It's a spirited performance full of octave jumps, hisses, clicks, growls and snippets of some other tunes ("Blues in the Night," "If I Had a Talking Picture of You," and "Idaho," the last of which she had featured in her supreme scat performance of "How High the Moon" on the 1960 Mack the Knife—Ella in Berlin album).

The sound on Live at Chautauqua is unfortunately quite tinny and in places slightly distorted. Nevertheless, it is an interesting snapshot of the singer still at the height of her vocal powers and any new Ella is, of course, always welcome. ~By James Doherty

Live at Chautauqua -Volume 2 is the second half of this sold out concert and features Tee Carson and his trio consisting of Keter Betts on bass and Joe Harris on drums. With these previously unreleased recordings we are blessed to hear her again in great voice while handling a fine set of standards and new material.

This recording stems from the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater in Western New York near Lake Erie (built in 1893, the amphitheater has witnessed such varied programs as those presented by Booker T. Washington, Amelia Earhart, Marian Anderson, George Shearing and where FDR delivered his famous “I Hate War” speech). With this in mind you can only imagine how the audience felt hearing Ella's poignant tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King “He Had A Dream”. This song was written by Fitzgerald and dedicated to the man who preached peace to all peoples. It was just a little over 3 months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King and when this was performed the terrible events during that year of unrest were still on everyone’s mind.

These previously unreleased recordings have quite a history. Gina Alley-Crook, who inherited the recording from her Father In Law stated: “I first came across this recording when my husband brought it back from his father’s collection of things from his early years as a musician. Having been a child of the late 60’s and early 70’s, I was thrilled to hold the reel to reel recording of Ella Fitzgerald. The Chautauqua Institute did not usually record their musical events only their lectures and occasional symphonic performances. The priest who was in charge of the sound engineering was given permission by Ella to record that evening’s performance. Later that year, my father-in-law who volunteered at the Institute from time to time, was gifted the reel to reel from the priest, who knew my father-in-laws passion for jazz. It has been in my family for more than 4 decades. One of my greatest passions is preserving history. I knew someday that someone would hear how special this recording was."

She was born and raised in Moscow, emigrated with her family to North Carolina, and knows of deserts mainly from books. But if you think Yelena Eckemoff’s lack of direct exposure to Bedouins, sand dunes, and dust storms would keep her from recording a work that evokes those things, you don’t know the power of this pianist-composer’s imagination.

Yelena Eckemoff has been imprinted by her Russian soul. With her modern, sometimes free-leaning approach and the weight and intensity her music attains, Eckemoff and her music are strikingly original.

Desert captures the Arabian Desert in all its mystery and natural allure not only with its 11 thematically linked compositions, but also with original poems, prose, and (as she frequently provides) album art.

Barbara Ireland (born March 8 in Seattle, Washington) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter known for embracing and experimenting with many different genres of music, including rock, jazz, downtempo, punk, classic country, glam rock, and classical. She has performed and recorded as singing partner with Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) in his band, The Hank Khoir, since 2007 and played bass, keyboards, drums and sang in numerous pre-grunge Seattle, Washington bands including The Fags (with Upchuck Gerra and Paul Solger), and Mental Mannequin (with Gordon Raphael, producer of The Strokes). Ireland also composes soundtracks, and wrote a book of songs for beginning harpists. Ireland released her first solo CD, "Turning Back Time Classic Songs To Kiss By", in late 2010, in which she brings back the rich sounds of old jazz/torch singing. Her second CD, titled "RED," was released June, 2012. This album is composed primarily of songs written by Ireland, where she mixes early 1960s girl group sounds, classic 'pheromone jazz', and down and dirty blues and rock, including a Mae West-style cover of John Lee Hooker's song, "Boom Boom."

Ireland is also known for her avant-garde filmmaking and collage art. She received her BFA degree in Film Directing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, has won several awards for her Fellini-esque films, and Sky Cries Mary music videos, and held a film retrospective of her work at Seattle's Film Forum in 2007. A DVD of her film work, titled From Dreams To Delirium, was released in 2011 at a gala screening/release party at the NWFF. Her collage art and early rock posters have been exhibited in several Seattle galleries, two rock poster art books, and Merle Becker's 2009 documentary, 'American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art.'  https://alchetron.com/Barbara-Ireland

It has long been a disappointment to many longtime followers that Rollins's recordings of the 1970s and '80s were generally not at the same level as his earlier sessions. Nucleus is a case in point. This funky date (which also includes trombonist Raul DeSouza, Bennie Maupin on reeds and keyboardist George Duke) has its moments (including an updated version of "My Reverie") but falls far short of hinting at any new innovations. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/nucleus-mw0000312582

This set of standards by Italian tenor boss Gianni Basso with Guido Manusardi's piano trio is notable only for two things: the poor sound the stereo needs to be turned nearly all the way up for the listener to be able to engage the entire band and for the extremely snoozy choice of material. Coming from the Johnny Griffin school of tenor players, Basso has a warm, slightly raw tone that encourages the more R&B side of the jazz canon for its fullest expression. Basso plays Coltrane on "Bye Bye Blackbird," a tune he can pull off melodically, but improvisationally he relates with clichés that dip back into the blues book on the changes. He doesn't extend them or invert them, he merely blows over them and loudly so the rest of the band is buried in the mix. As for other standards like "Old Folks," "There Is No Greater Love," "The Man I Love," and "I Close My Eyes," the performances are adequate but never heat up past lukewarm. Manusardi is a fine accompanist, but hardly a refined soloist; his own breaks are filled with chordal reworking of the tune's harmony for exactly the same number of choruses (four) before turning it over to Basso, who slips through the motions of playing half the melody and harmonically extrapolating tune after tune. Yes, this is jazz but, for all its lyricism and good intentions, it's mediocre.~ Thom Jurek https://www.allmusic.com/album/live-at-down-town-mw0000722636

A popular jazz, tenor, saxophonist in Japan, Harry Allen is the second round following a competition album with Vladimir Shafranov "Nostalgic Stockholm"! I made a romantic melody such as full-length French film music, chanson, masterpiece of Michelle Le Grand, etc. as a first-class jazz album.
