Andrea Beneventano - The Driver

The Driver is the new work as a leader of the pianist Andrea Beneventano  after Trinacria in 2003, which on this occasion completes his trio with the excellent Francesco Puglisi on double bass and Nicola Angelucci on drums.

Therefore, a classical formation that knows how to offer in the nine proposed tracks all signed by the leader except for a couple of standards a jazz vision that does not differ much from the guidelines of the mainstream (in the broadest sense of the term), even if in the way of proposing himself as a Sicilian pianist, various reasons of interest can be traced, which make listening to the entire work pleasant and worthy of attention. Starting from the way in which it expresses a complete and versatility melodic vision to an extreme formal beauty in "Passing Seasons," to the more introspective and shadowy passage of the opener "Cool River," to the fragmented visions of "The Driver," a nervous passage and snappy, in which Puglisi and Angelucci produce themselves in a remarkable accompanying work.

Beneventano intertwines different stylistic roots that range from the "I Got Your Rhythm" bop to the "My Gospel" contemplations, so that his work also characterized by an excellent interplay knows no moments of yielding neither from the formal point of view nor under the expressive profile. Paul Bley, Tiziana Ghiglioni - Lyrics

Recorded in 1991, this disc gorgeously assembles two of the most lyric "voices" on one CD, Canadian pianist Paul Bley and Italian chanteuse Tiziana Ghiglioni, performing solo and duet in a series of originals and standards. Of the 11 tunes, Bley composed six, all of which are piano solos, which serve as preludes or postludes --depending on your point of view -- to the duets on the standards by Kern, Gershwin, Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh, etc. Bley's compositions are all lyric songs, or songs without lyrics that follow a conventional form and are adorned by his usual lush pointillism. From "Beginning" to "Clime" to "Soulful," Bley digs very deep for the melodic invention only he can put across, stringing lines of arpeggios next to open mode chords and tying them together in a chromaticism of his own design. His triplets give way to staggered ninths and flatted fifths before working themselves out in a lyric line that is as complex as it is stunningly beautiful. As for the duets with Ghiglioni, she proves Bley's perfect foil -- especially on tunes like Gershwin and Kern's "Long Ago and Far Away." Ghiglioni allows the song to come through her voice; she has no need to "make it her own" by taming or twisting it to fit her oracular talent. She allows Bley to bring her the changes and she takes the melody elegantly, letting it come from her mouth as a song, not a vehicle for vocal stylishness. The same goes for "Lover Man," one of the finest versions ever recorded: As she allows the lyric to drip from her emotions and not vice versa, Bley picks it all up and polishes the tune, as the singing needs no assistance. The final duet, "The More I See You," is a revelation in symbiotic musicianship. Ghiglioni just barely anticipates Bley's line as he holds back a fraction of a second to change the shape of his chord voicing to highlight the depth and dimension in Ghiglioni's singing. The song becomes not a sentimental piece of jazz' nostalgic past, but a living, breathing hymn to longing. And you can't ask for more than that. ~Thom Jurek

Diamo are welcome to this Italian vocalist who shows a debut CD with a repertoire made up of well-known standards and some original compositions thereof Antonella Vitale, of Andrea Beneventano , pianist and arranger of this CD, and Marina Acerra . There are three songs of Bacharach, including the title track, which also shows a clever presentation skills of the melody very important in the songs of this composer and Vitale has a very clear voice quality and versatile. Perhaps a small flaw can denote English pronunciation a bit '' forced '. But when it comes to improvise Vitale does not hold some back and casually using a valid scat as the ballad Night , in which he plays a nice doubling time, but also in other songs it detects a good command of harmony.

Very nice original compositions with use of the Italian language that now begins to consolidate among Italian singers. Maybe they will not be very exportable texts but the musicality obtained is undoubtedly original and pleasant. The musicians called to accompany the vocalist ( Lorenzo Tucci , Francesco Puglisi and Andrea Beneventano ) are an excellent and solid foundation, improvise all effortlessly even if there are no particular peaks. The first we’ve ever heard from singer Antonella Vitale a deep-voiced singer with a really great small combo sort of vibe and an ability to sing equally well in English and Italian! Most of the music here is in English as the tunes are older jazz standards but there’s a few Italian numbers that are especially nice, and which feature writing by Vitale herself, which is a very nice surprise! Backing is mostly by a trio, but a really lively one with sublime work on acoustic bass from Francesco Puglisi, who really gives the music a soulful finish and players include Andrea Beneventano on piano and Alessandro Marzi on drums plus guest accordion from Antonella Salis on a few tracks. Titles include “Blue In Green”, “Take The A Train”, “Canoeiro”, “Eu E O Vento”, “But Beautiful”, “Preludio”, and “The Shadow Of Your Smile”. ~ Dusty Groove  http://www.dustygroove.com/item/711745

Dodicilune marks the debut of a promising singer Italian. Bologna, born in 1982, Chiara Pancaldi looks through an album refined, pleasant and bright. His voice is clear and full of swing. Reinterprets standards with an enviable ease. From "You're driving me crazy" in which the elegance of his vocal timbre blends improvisation and scat continuing with the title track " The Song Is You ". Supported by four accomplished musicians, who not only accompany, but embellish his performances singing. Nico Menci floor, Bright David on guitar,Stefano Senni on bass and Victor Sicbaldi on drums.

With so much support, the singer winds its way through the interpretations of the past, experimenting, soon after, with his version of the character and style of a piece of Ellington's " Do not get around much anymore . " Fearlessly but reverently he passes then the arduous test bossa nova. Try become almost mandatory for a jazz singer who wants to be considered complete. " Sabia "of Jobim and Chico Buarque and" Morro dois irmaos "emphasize the versatility and artistic sensitivity of Pancaldi. Good pronunciation and a particular intensity complete the picture.

And how can it even draw from the repertoire of Cole Porter when you pay homage to the standards of the fifties and sixties. His " So in love "is dense and passionate, as the remaining standard" Day by Day "and" I Should Care ". But the Bolognese singer signed two pieces. The text of " On "4th tuned blues "music by David Bright and text and music of the song" Wade ", the latter only real ballad on the album. A song sophisticated and intimate, that sums up the elegance of this his first album. An excellent debut for a singer who will have much to say in the future.~ Valeria Lopresti for Jazzitalia Translate by google http://www.jazzitalia.net/recensioni/thesongisiyou.asp#.VdZkM89Vikp

Traveling the world from South Africa to Svalbard, a harsh truth is revealed: despite challenges facing recorded music—and, paradoxically, the sheer volume being released—an increasing number of musicians deserving broader recognition are unable to transcend their native countries. Hiring internationally renowned players might seem a good tactic, but the result too often reflects exactly what it is: unknown musicians playing with ringers. The music may be well-played—as it better be from such musicians of caliber—but does it actually feel like a group, players actually engaged together?

With four previous recordings, and a number of film scores and live European appearances behind him, the answer for Pierluigi Balducci is a resounding yes. An electric bassist clearly informed by Steve Swallow but never sounding like the American four-stringer, Balducci's all-star cast includes Oregon's reed/woodwind multi-instrumentalist Paul McCandless, the vastly influential pianist,John Taylor, and Michele Rabbia, the Italian percussionist whose profile has, most certainly grown through his series of ECM recordings with pianist Stefano Battaglia, including their 2010 duo session Pastorale.

A recording of unrepentant lyricism suggesting, at times, how Oregon might sound, had it originated in a Mediterranean country rather than the American Northwest, seven Balducci originals—one, the breezy 6/8 "The Light of Seville," bookending the record: first, as its de facto opener following the rubato miniature, "Introduction," its gentle melody a variation drawn from "The Light"; and, again, bringing Blue from Heaven full circle with a similarly structured take possessing just a tad added strength—are complemented by two covers that could not be more different yet, in these superb hands, cohere completely with the rest of the set.

Taylor sits it out on pianist Brad Mehldau's "Unrequited"—originating on Art of the Trio, Vol. 3: Songs (Warner Bros., 1998) but reprised, with guitarist Pat Metheny, on Metheny Mehldau (Nonesuch, 2006). Balducci draws upon early days as a classical guitarist, providing chordal accompaniment for McCandless' soaring soprano solo while, during his own affecting turn, demonstrating absolute comfort navigating its changes. The Metheny link continues with bassist Charlie Haden's "Our Spanish Love Song," from the pair's Beyond the Missouri Sky (Verve, 1997), another piano-less trio track.

Despite the name-power of those tracks, it's Balducci's writing that both shines and defines Blue from Heaven. The tango-esque "Fin de Siècle" shifts feel throughout its four-and-a-half-minutes, Taylor's increasingly buoyant support and Balducci's firm quarter-notes relaxing when the group turns to half-time, but only briefly. The bassist delivers a brief but compelling solo combining melodic intent and lithe imagination, while Taylor builds on characteristically dense voicings and dexterous linearity. McCandless, on oboe, reiterates the song's theme before taking the last and longest solo, his vertical intervallic leaps as impressive as his note-perfect thematic accuracy on this most difficult of double-reed instruments.

At just under 44 minutes, Blue from Heaven seems to pass by in an instant, but if there's truth in the adage "leave them hungry for more," Balducci succeeds in spades. He may have done so with musicians possessing considerably greater cachet, but throughout Blue from Heaven, this evocative and provocative bassist/composer is never less than a full-on and absolute equal. ~by John Kelman

Originally from Rome but now based in New York City, Italian singer/songwriter Chiara Civello is an eclectic, far-reaching artist who brings a variety of pop, jazz, cabaret and Latin influences to the table. Although Civello has performed straight-ahead jazz in the past, she is not a full-time jazz singer or a bebop purist by any means; stylistically, much of the material she has recorded for Verve is closer to Sade, Basia, Norah Jones, Nellie McKay (minus the eccentricity and sharp-tongued humor) or Rickie Lee Jones than it is to hardcore jazz vocalists like Abbey Lincoln, Sheila Jordan and Kitty Margolis. But the jazz influence is almost always present in Civello's pop recordings and since her arrival in the United States, she has crossed paths with major jazz musicians like alto saxophonist Phil Woods and guitarist Mike Stern. Listing all of Civello's influences could be time-consuming; Civello gives the impression that along the way, she has listened to everyone from Joni Mitchell, Sade and Sting to Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London and Billie Holiday. Brazilian jazz and pop is also a strong influence on Civello, who is obviously well aware of Brazilian greats such as Astrud Gilberto, Gal Costa, Ivan Lins and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Although Civello grew up in a country where Italian is the primary language, much of her writing has been in English. Civello, in fact, has been singing and writing in at least four languages English, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish and when she performs in English, Civello sings with only a slight trace of an Italian accent. Her command of the English language is excellent, and her accent is beneficial in that it gives her performances a great deal of character.

Civello was still living in Italy when, at the age of 17, she was hired to perform as a featured vocalist for the Mario Raja Big Bang (as opposed to Mario Raja Big Band). After that, she was employed by Italian jazz drummer Roberto Gatto, who is well-known in Italy and included her in his group the Noisemakers. In 1993, Civello moved to Boston after being awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music and by the time she graduated from Berklee in 1998, Civello had received a Boston Jazz Society Award as well as a Cleo Laine Award. In 2000, she left Boston for New York City, where she met veteran producer Russ Titelman, who has worked with a long list of major artists that includes, among others, Paul Simon, Rickie Lee Jones, Randy Newman, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor and Brazilian star Milton Nascimento. Titelman went on to produce a demo for Civello and introduced her to Ron Goldstein, president and CEO of the Verve Music Group, and Goldstein ended up offering her a contract. Titelman also introduced Civello to veteran pop composer Burt Bacharach, with whom she co-wrote the song "Trouble." Late Quarter Moon, Civello's first album for Verve, was given a February 2005 release date in the United States. https://itunes.apple.com/br/artist/chiara-civello/id41621668

She was born in Florence, on July 30, 1954, to Florentine parents, who rarely set their sights on Italy. In the house we listened to the songs in vogue, jazz and classical music. Barbara played the piano, the guitar, but above all sang, of everything: the Beatles, Rita Pavone, Mina. Then one day "new" records arrived, a new sound coming from overseas: the Bossa Nova . Barbara was fifteen years old. Thus began his love for Brazilian music , an extraordinary love that never ended, and which, once grown, pushed her to a turning point in life: despite her degree in psychology, she abandoned the project to become a psychoanalyst and decide to be a singer. He throws himself into the frantic search for everything concerning Brazil, music, literature and the Portuguese language itself. Finally in 1982 he made his first trip to that dreamed land. Elis Regina has been dead for a year and Barbara has already internalized her way of singing, she knows every breath, every smile and every tear that comes out of Elis's song. On that first trip he fills a suitcase with records , and the soul of sounds and names! He realizes that there is an unknown and wonderful world of composers, musicians, and performers who open new horizons to explore. When Barbara returns to Brazil, she goes a long way, from Rio to S Luis do Maranhão, "discovers" the Nordeste, re-falls in love, meets Luiz Gonzaga while she is recording her latest album just before she dies, learns her songs and those of Geraldo Azevedo, Xangai, Jatobá. His repertoire changes radically: Barbara in Italy spreads the popular music of that different Brazil, plays the triangle and the zabumba, canta côco e baião, maracatu and bumba meu boi, once again he enjoys and is moved. In the meantime he forms the Trio OUTRO LADO with Beppe Fornaroli and Naco , with whom he records an LP, "Outro Lado", (reprinted on CD by Philology in 1999). Many years pass, many journeys, many meetings. In 1994 he formed a quartet with Stefano Bollani on the piano, Raffaello Pareti on the double bass and Francesco Petreni on drums, a group that remained active until the early 2000s. He collaborates with great Italian and foreign musicians of the jazz scene (Enrico Rava, Stefano Bollani, Fabrizio Bosso, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz) and Brazilian Popular Music, such as Toninho Horta and Guinga, and participates with various formations in the most important Italian festivals. Along his more than thirty-year career he also engages with jazz and with Italian and French songs. Translate By Google http://www.barbaracasini.it/barbara-casini-biografia/

This hugely popular trumpet player (born in Trieste, Italy in 1939) almost single-handedly brought Italian jazz to international attention. He began playing Dixieland trombone in Turin, but after hearing Miles Davis, switched instruments and embraced the modern style. Other key meetings were with Gato Barbieri, with whom he recorded movie soundtracks in 1962, and Chet Baker. He began to play with Steve Lacy and also teamed up with South African expatriates Louis Moholo and John Dyani and recorded The Forest and the Zoo (ESP) live in Argentina. In 1967, he moved to New York, playing with Roswell Rudd, Marion Brown, Rashied Ali, Cecil Taylor, and Charlie Haden. In a brief return to Europe, Rava recorded with Lee Konitz (Stereokonitz, RCA) and Manfred Schoof (European Echoes, FMP). From 1969 to 1976, he was back in New York, recording Escalator Over the Hill with Carla Bley's Jazz Composers' Orchestra. After his first album as a leader, Il Giro del Giorno in 80 Mondi (Black Saint), he began to lead his own pianoless quartets and quintets. His recorded output numbers over 100 records, and over 30 as a leader. ECM has reissued some of his essential recordings of the '70s, like The Pilgrim and the Stars, The Plot, and Enrico Rava Quartet, while Soul Note and Label Bleu published CDs by his innovative Electric Five (in reality a sextet, as he always excludes himself from the count), which includes two electric guitars. With keyboard master Franco D'Andrea and trumpeter Paolo Fresu, Rava recorded Bix and Pop (Philology) and Shades of Chet, tributes to Bix Beiderbecke and Armstrong, and to Chet Baker, respectively. Also of note are Rava, L'opera Va and Carmen, gorgeous readings of opera arias. In 2001, he created a new quintet with young talents Gianluca Petrella, Stefano Bollani, Rosario Bonaccorso, and Roberto Gatto, and toured with old friends Roswell Rudd and Gato Barbieri, releasing Easy Living with them in 2004 on ECM. Three years later, after Bollani, who had struck out as a solo player, was replaced by Andrea Pozza, The Words and the Days came out. In 2007, Rava and pianist Stefano Bollani released The Third Man on ECM. Rava followed the release in 2009 with New York Days, a collection of moody originals with a film noir tinge, backed by a band that included Bollani, tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Paul Motian. Rava broke in a new all-Italian quintet for Tribe, which was issued by ECM in the fall of 2011. Its members included trombonist Gianluca Petrella, pianist Giovanni Guidi, bassist Gabriele Evangelista, and drummer Fabrizio Sferra. Guitarist Giacomo Ancillotto also guested on the set, expanding the lineup on various selections. Rava made a wide left turn for 2012's On the Dance Floor. Amazingly, the trumpeter only became aware of pop singer Michael Jackson's music after his death, and he became obsessed with it. The album, his tribute to what he considers the late singer's contribution to 20th century music, was recorded with Parco della Musica Jazz Lab at the Rome Auditorium; it is entirely comprised of Jackson's material. In 2019, he appeared alongside saxophonist Joe Lovano on the live ECM date Roma. Translate By Google ~ Francesco Martinelli https://www.allmusic.com/artist/enrico-rava-mn0000182392/biography

The style of Sugarpie and the Candymen is the "progressive swing": a mixture of original songs and evergreen rearrangements of rock, with different influences but where the common denominator is swing. And it is with a celebration of swing that the band celebrates its eleventh birthday: instead of immersing the songs of today in a mythical sound past, they have plunged into them to retrieve a handful of classics of that unrepeatable period that were the Thirties. They are the songs of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin's Great American Songbook and Duke Ellington's and Benny Goodman's Era of Swing, in the DNA of every American music lover, as well as every self-respecting jazz fan. The first impulse came from the great Renzo Arbore: collaborating with the famous showman on his album Arbore Plus, Sugarpie and the Candymen recorded for the first time two old swing songs and the experience spurred them to continue. "We especially love playing live and the feeling of risk and freshness of improvisation, and we often open the concerts with a handful of these standards," they say. "At one point we realized that these were also part of our sound, yet we had never recorded them!" The love of "Sugarpie" Lara Ferrari for Ella Fitzgerald was another catalyst for the project. A-Tisket, A-Tasket was his first hit, in 1938, and she is linked to practically all the other songs on the record. Listening to the amazing performance of Lara, the lightness and the contagious joy of making music that were typical of Ella can almost be touched. The only way to recreate the energy and immediacy of a concert is to record all together, in a short time, without the usual sophisticated arrangements and the many vocal harmonies. A two-day jam session at the now familiar Elfo Studio, nestled in the Piacenza hills. The recipe is simple: beautiful songs, minimal structures and open to surprise. In fact the swinga band like never before, has fun and allows itself more extended and more daring. On the other hand, it's what he's been doing in concert for ten years now! Cherry on the (sugar) pie, Mauro Negri, an outstanding Mantuan clarinetist and saxophonist already with Enrico Rava, special guest in the studio and more and more often also in their live adventures, which gives a precious touch, both traditional and very modern. Here is Sweet Classics, the sixth album by Sugarpie and the Candymen and their personal tribute to the great classics of jazz and American song, reinterpreted with the usual freshness and irony that have characterized this highly original Italian swing quintet for over ten years. https://www.traxsource.com/title/1175876/sweet-classics

Aldo Romano Quartet - Canzoni

On this disc, drummer Aldo Romano leads an Italian supergroup to revisit some of the Italian folk repertoire. It is also the companion CD to Non Dimenticar, which is based on the same concept. Some songs such as "O Sole Mio" and "Come Prima" will be overly familiar to the noninitiated, but listeners also get the opportunity to discover some obscurities from the Italian countryside. The music displays a good share of romanticism and the mood is rather subdued. Only toward the end does the band switch to a higher gear, as on the uplifting closer "Senza Fine." The musicians surrounding Romano are no strangers to the success of this enterprise. Trumpeter Paolo Fresu's playing obviously recalls Miles Davis' muted trumpet, but he is not merely mimicking the master and he brings out the intrinsic quality of the tunes. Pianist Franco D'Andrea and bassist Furio Di Castri's taste and elegance are perfectly suited to the project. After listening to this set, many will be surprised to realize that it was conducted under the leadership of a drummer. Although Romano does leave all the solo spaces to his cohorts, his presence is definitely felt, as he provides the necessary direction. An enjoyable set that proves that Italian songs just like show tunes can become jazz standards in their own right.

The music kicks her even before being born to a concert by The Rokes. "It's the rain that goes ... and the calm returns". He then meets her at the age of nine in the hands of Paolo Lucci: Choir of white voices of ARCUM. Wonderful years for a kid. Then the voice changes and the music becomes LIFE. Left the studies, part volunteer in the paratroopers. After so much flying, he decides to land on a stage, steals a microphone and with guitarist Daniele Bazzani puts on one of the luckiest bands of those years: BESTAFF (1990). Live live and still live, with a fantastic group of musicians. Pure fun.Pure Rock blues. With them, in 1993 he took part in Sanremo in the youth category with the song "Camminando" and later the first and only album of the group. "As long as we go" (BMG).  In 1997 the solo path saw him write his second album "From the other side of the world" (I Piloti / Ricordi) and with the song "Ora è tempo" he passed the selections of Sanremo Giovani of the same year. In 2011 he took part in the 90 + 1 album by Marco Rinalduzzi and later in the tribute to Alex Baroni "Il Senso ... di Alex" (2012) with the song "Have I told you lately that I love you". Fiorella Mannoia, in his new work "SUD" (2012), reinterprets the song "When the angel flies" excerpt from the album "The Things you See". Collaborate with advertising. His is the voice of the characters in the new animation "Acqua Lete" (2010 - 2013).  He lends his voice to two animated films: "Tiffany and the three brigands" (Germany 2007) and "Titeuf" (France 2011).  Participate in the Italian choral versions of the film "The Hobbit - an unexpected journey" (USA 2012). Support it the lightness of being, one might say, listening to Il sole di un momento, the new work of the singer and composer Ada Montellanico, here surrounded by a group of first-rate stars of Italian and international jazz. Lightness of the texts, words that flirt with the feelings, words never invasive or absolute but discreet suggestions to free the thought to the wave of the emotions. How not to be lulled by phrases such as "... I'll dream you anyway, because the rain that wets us does not become snow .." or "... I take a moment lost in time, sounds that weave new words ..."? Lightness of music, softness of the sound mixes embellished by Paul McCandless's oboe and enriched with arcane meanings from the ancient basset horn played by Antonio Amanti, without forgetting the sophisticated Stefano Cantini saxophones and the acoustic brush strokes of Bebo Ferra's guitar. Words, song and music do not travel on parallel tracks, nor do they act like vain primadors in search of the tear-jerking agent or the ovation solo. Just as some organisms can not do without one another in order to survive, words and music live in a form of real osmosis in which each one drinks at the source of the other, drawing renewed energy and stimulating ideas. Pieranunzi is a master in the art of accompaniment and knows very well that the lyrics of Ada Montellanico can not simply be accompanied. The perfect diction, the rich timbre of the singer's chiaroscuro, the discreetly minimalist texts ask to be metabolized and brought to the surface through a constantly moving pianism, which abandons the call of a calligraphic melancholy to favor a volitive, intriguing, sometimes free approach and adventurous. Poetic. ~ AAJ Italy Staff https://www.allaboutjazz.com/il-sole-di-un-attimo-enrico-pieranunzi-egea-records-review-by-aaji-staff.php

An acclaimed Italian jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Enrico Pieranunzi is known for his virtuosic, classical-influenced technique, nuanced sense of harmony, and elegantly restrained approach to modern post-bop jazz. Influenced heavily by Bill Evans, Pieranunzi emerged in the 1970s leading his own trio, and quickly established himself internationally as an in-demand sideman for such jazz giants as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, and others. Along with performing, he is a dedicated teacher, having worked for many years as a full professor at the Conservatorio di Musica in Frosinone. Recognized as one of the foremost Italian jazz artists, he has garnered a handful of awards, including taking home the 1997 Django d'Or as Best European Jazz Musician and winning the 2014 German Echo Jazz Award as Best International Keyboard Artist. Born in Rome in 1949, Pieranunzi was introduced to classical music and jazz by his father, guitarist Alvaro Pieranunzi. (In addition, his brother is noted classical violinist Gabriele Pieranunzi.) Encouraged to study piano from a young age, he eventually graduated university with a music degree in 1973, and began working as a teacher. However, in 1975 he left his teaching position to focus on leading his jazz trio. He debuted that same year with the album Jazz a Confronto, and followed up with a handful of well-regarded efforts including 1976's New & Old Jazz Sounds with his father, 1976's The Day After the Silence, and 1978's A Long Way. By the '80s, Pieranunzi had gained the attention of many touring American artists, including saxophonists Phil Woods and Lee Konitz, flügelhorn player Art Farmer, and bassist Charlie Haden. He also developed a close working relationship with trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker, a partnership that resulted in several superb albums, including 1980's Soft Journey and 1987's Silence, which also showcased Haden. The pianist also released more of his own albums, including pairing with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron for several efforts such as 1984's New Lands. He went solo on 1985's What's What, and joined saxophonist Konitz on 1988's Solitudes. Pieranunzi capped the decade by appearing on Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to the acclaimed 1989 film Cinema Paradiso. More work followed in the '90s, including dates with Baker, Haden, and Woods, as well as adventurous sessions with trumpeters Enrico Rava and Eric Vloeimans. As a leader, he recorded regularly for Enja, Timeless, and Soul Note, issuing such albums as 1995's Flux & Change, 1997's Seaward, and 1998's Ma l'Amore No. He also gained increasing praise for his work, including taking home the prestigious Django d'Or as the Best European Jazz Musician in 1997. Two years later, he paired with trumpeter Bert Joris for the quintet date Don't Forget the Poet.

A duo session with pianist Bert van den Brink followed in 2000. He furthered his own work over the next decade, releasing albums like 2001's Improvised Forms of Trio, 2002's Play Morricone, and 2003's Fellini Jazz. He also paired with acclaimed drummer Paul Motian for a handful of albums, including 2004's Doorways with saxophonist Chris Potter and 2005's Special Encounter with Haden. Pieranunzi also continued his ongoing association with bassist Johnson and drummer Baron, releasing a steady flow of studio and live sessions, including 2008's Yellow & Blue Suites and 2009's Dream Dance. There were also similar efforts with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez, such as 2013's Permutations and 2014's Stories. In 2014, he took home Germany's Echo Jazz Award as Best International Keyboard Artist. He returned the following year alongside trumpeter Ralph Alessi, saxophonist Donny McCaslin, and bassist Matt Penman for the forward-thinking quartet album Proximity. He then joined fellow pianist Bruno Canino for the 2016 duo session Americas, and followed in 2017 with another duo date, Duke's Dream with saxophonist Rosario Giuliani. The concert album Wine & Waltzes: Live at Bastianich Winery appeared in 2018. ~ Matt Collar https://www.allmusic.com/artist/enrico-pieranunzi-mn0000184086/biography

ACT Music brings together a pair of virtuosos in Lars Danielsson and Paolo Fresu, for the duo outing Summerwind. Both are well-known for their melodic and expressive playing as well as an innate gift for spontaneity. Recorded in the Swedish seaport city of Gothenburg, in early 2018, the album incorporates elements of folk, classical and jazz music in a relaxed setting.  Bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson has been a staple of the ACT label for more than ten years and across ten albums. Among his partners on those collections are Tigran Hamasyan, Magnus Ostrom, Arve Henriksen, Mathias Eick, Bugge Wesseltoft, and Nils Petter Molvaer. The Swedish composer and producer came onto the scene with New Hands (Dragon Records, 1986), in his namesake quartet, featuring Dave Liebman, Bobo Stenson and Jon Christensen. Over almost twenty years that group has provided Danielsson with a platform from which he has expanded his work to symphony orchestra and big band formats. Trumpeter Paolo Fresu first came to the attention of audiences in the US with Carla Bley on The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu (ECM/Watt, 2007) though he had been leading his own quintet in Italy since his 1985 leader debut Ostinato (Splasc(h)). The Sardinia native graduated from the Conservatory of Cagliari in 1984, and went on to teach at the Siena Jazz National Seminars, and the jazz university in Terni. He is the director of Nuoro Jazz Seminars in Nuoro, Italy. Most of the fifteen compact tracks are original compositions eleven from Danielsson and/or Fresu, including the real-time improvisation "Dardusó." Swedish composer Oskar Lindberg, Krzysztof Komeda and Johann Sebastian Bach provide the eclectic assortment of cover material. Opening with "Autumn Leaves" the duo establishes a pattern of patiently developing some profoundly melodic tunes. Four tracks in, Danielsson's "Stilla Storm" breaks loose with a more upbeat and animated wrap-up. The Oskar Lindberg contribution "Jag lyfter ögat mot himmelen" maintains that more buoyant atmosphere which then takes a decidedly different tone with Fresu's noir-ish, but all-to-brief "Drexciya." The trumpeter takes a thoughtful approach to Komeda's "Sleep Safe And Warm," a piece that came to be identified with Tomasz Stanko. Danielsson's arrangement of Bach's "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" gives the piece a nice updating without losing the original texture.  Despite the duo formation, Danielsson and Fresu often manage to evoke a sweeping sound; full and resounding even in its most fleeting narrations. There is an overall laidback nature that saturates Summerwind but through the tranquility a subtle heat keeps things energized. The spartan album is a showcase for the first-class talents of Danielsson and Fresu. ~ Karl Ackermann https://www.allaboutjazz.com/summerwind-lars-danielsson-act-music-review-by-karl-ackermann.php

When, early seventies, Scott Hamilton made his international debut, it was a kind of sensation. On the album cover he looked like a guy from the fifties or even earlier. The music he played also had the taste of yore. Of all those great swingers that preceded him. Scott Hamilton seemed a fad that would fade. Not so with Hamilton. Happily. His style was a matter of pure love. A love to which he stayed faithful. With that ideal mastery of the flowery language of swing and bop. Up to the smallest punctuation marks. Being able to use them fluently in enjoyable stories everyone could like. By lovingly blowing new life into his ‘standards’.  In The Hague’s ‘Literaire Sociëteit De Witte’ the Jazz at the Club- programme brought Hamilton together with Dutch jazzmusicians who could have been his blood relatives, musically speaking. Drummer Frits Landesbergen who as a young musician already gathered all the important jazz prizes in his country and always swings. Bass player Hans Mantel a musician who can caress, swing ánd sing on his instrument. With the youngest of the band, piano player Francesca Tandoi, originally from Rome but living in The Hague, who supports and solos with lots of phantasy and a perfect timing. And whose singing voice is as important. Because of the ear-pleasing intimacy and romance of her expression in ‘Maybe you’ll be there’ and ‘Estate’. ‘Scott Hamilton Live’ offers a delightful journey from what jazz was to what it is. With the ancient ‘Sheik of Araby’ (1921, from a Rudolf Valentino-movie) to Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘Blue 'N' Boogie’. From ‘Dein ist mein ganzes Herz’, from the Franz Léhar operetta ‘Das Land des Lächens’, as a jazz piece titled ‘Yours is my heart alone’. To Irving Berlins beautiful ‘How deep is the ocean’ or Gene de Pauls ‘I’ll remember April’.  Welcome to the world of the eternal lover, Scott Hamilton. https://www.oaprecords.com/index.php?id=29&no_cache=1&L=0&tt_products%5Bproduct%5D=139&cHash=d9a0dfbbb676b7dc3af6647ab1c5f965
