The Netherlands have really turned their Eurovision fortunes round as of late. After a dry spell of 9 years failing to qualify for the final of Eurovision, Anouk’s ‘Birds’ finished in 9th place in 2013 and then last year the Common Linnets’ ‘Calm After the Storm’ took second place. This year the Dutch entry sees veteran female pop and jazz singer and The Voice coach Trijntje Oosterhuis take centre stage with her song ‘Walk Along’. Read on to see what we made of the song. ‘Walk Along’ is co-written by Oosterhuis and one of her close friends and former Eurovision contestant Anouk. The song seems to focus on a woman of a certain age who is craving the attention of a younger man who isn’t returning her interest in him. This comes out in the song’s lyrics- ‘I can’t seem to get you to look at me one day…this is not a little crush…’ This theme is highlighted again the black and white video which accompanies the song with Oosterhuis doing her best embarrassing mum dancing while a younger tattooed man struts around in the background in a suits, in a hat and at times topless. The song itself is a zesty, uplifting, uptempo number with a decent refrain of ‘Why? Why I I I I, Won’t you walk along, walk along babaaay!’ Apart from that the song doesn’t really stand out from the crowd and I think that Trijntje will struggle to recreate the Netherlands recent track record at Eurovision. What do you think? Let us know by commenting below and voting in our poll. https://eurovisionni.wordpress.com/2015/05/01/review-netherlands-trijntje-oosterhuis-walk-along-2/

Amsterdam, 1994. In the club circuit a band still unknown at that time. A brother and sister, and a handful of befriended musicians. The music they make: catchy pop songs. So that was us, says Trijntje about the start time of Total Touch, which is also the start of her career. Trijntje grows up in a musical family. Her mother is a violinist, her father a pastor and a poet. As a little girl she is already singing between her sliding doors at her grandmother's house and is writing a song to the sound of The Sound of Music for her father's birthday. Singing is second nature to her. There has never been another plan either, since she is very small she knows no better than she wants to become a singer. Together with her brother Tjeerd, she founded Total Touch in the early nineties. In 1994 she toured the world with Candy Dulfer, two years later the first single from her band, Touch Me There, was picked up by the radio. Her real breakthrough comes after Trijntje opens the Amsterdam ArenA with the hymn De Zee and surprises the whole of the Netherlands with her vocal qualities. Not much later, the second single from Total Touch, Somebody Else's Lover, a big hit. The first album will be one of the most successful debut albums in Dutch pop history. In the years that followed, Trijntje emerged as one of the most versatile artists in the Netherlands. She just as easily sings a pop song with Total Touch, as a Dutch-language duet with Marco Borsato, soul songs from Stevie Wonder, but also jazz standards. From 2001 she continued as a solo artist and worked with Toots Thielemans, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Lionel Richie, John Ewbank, Carel Kraayenhof, Janine Jansen, Candy Dulfer, Anouk and for many years she was one of the Ladies of Soul of Ladies . Together with the Metropole Orchestra she recorded two albums with the repertoire of master composer Burt Bacharach, who even provided new song material for this, and performed with him at the North Sea Jazz festival. In 2019, Trijntje celebrates her 25 years in the business. In addition to a sold-out anniversary concert in Ziggo Dome and a club tour in the fall, her new Dutch-language album will also be released. The album is produced by Jett Rebel. On this album she collaborates with Alain Clark, Diggy Dex, Vieze Fur of the Youth of Today, Glen Faria and Linde Schöne. A combination of old hands in the profession and young, new talent. Making this album was a special process for Trijntje. She works with musicians who partly come from another generation, but share a certain kinship: they share the same musical roots and have a great love for music. The album 'This Is For Me' is straight from her heart and shows who she is and where she is now.Translate By Google  https://www.trijntje.nl/

Although the career of Trijntje Oosterhuis consists for the most part of English-language work, we must not forget that her definitive breakthrough as a solo singer was really due to a Dutch-language song. When Oosterhuis provided the opening anthem of the Amsterdam ArenA in a bright red dress in 1996, the whole of the Netherlands knew in one fell swoop who the singer (who at the time formed the band Total Touch with her brother Tjeerd). That song, entitled De Zee, made it to the Top 10 of the national charts and paved the way for multiple trips in our native language. Wereld Zonder Jou(a duet with Marco Borsato), Vlieg Met Me Mee (from the feature film Abeltje ) and Now That You Are There(which was an ode to the birth of Princess Amalia) are a number of examples. Despite the always positive reactions to the Dutch language, it took a long time before Oosterhuis dared to venture on a complete Dutch album. For her current theater tour (which will start this week), the singer decided to take a different approach and therefore only to sing songs that we can all understand and understand word for word. During the tour's rehearsals, the idea arose to record a selection of the songs for an album. "Songs that are dear to me, songs of all times, songs that need to be sung and heard, songs that remind me of important moments in my life, forgotten gems or rather big hits that I have wanted to sing in my own way for years" said Oosterhuis recently in a statement. During the playing time of one hour and fourteen minutes we hear new versions of classics from Dutch artists. BLØF, Herman van Veen, Willeke Alberti, André Hazes, Henny Vrienten, Marco Borsato, Paul de Leeuw, Frans Halsema and Toon Hermans are a number of examples. To combine singing with motherhood, Oosterhuis decided to record the entire album entitled Leven Van De Liefde at home. That wasn't the first time for the singer, because the English-language albums See You As I Do (2005), the Michael Jackson tribute album Never Can Say Goodbye (2009) and the Christmas album This Is The Season (2010) were also in recorded her own studios. This way of recording songs produces an atmospheric and intimate sound. The feeling of being at home with Eenzaam Zonder Jou(the first song from the album) immediately clear because a small role is set aside for Maël, the one and a half year old daughter of Oosterhuis. You will not get it any purer than this.

The guitar playing of Leonardo Amuedo plays an important role in the songs. In addition to him, we hear more fellow musicians on the album. For example, there are solos for Carel Kraayenhof (bandoneon), Candy Dulfer (saxophone), father-in-law Henrie Ronde (steel drums), mother Josefien Melief (viola) and Aram Kersbergen (bass). The singer has clearly opted for two camps during the recording. While one camp consists of fado-like songs such as Every Time Again , If The Love Did Not Exist and Love of Later, the other camp consists of the somewhat more uplifting pieces with a fine groove such as Beautiful Story, This Everything and It Doesn't Get Better To become. WithJungle , by the way, manages to deliver a funny version of the hit with which Broederl Liefde was successful last year. Her sons of ten and twelve constantly sing that song, so the decision to make it their own was quickly made. Because Leven Van De Liefde is the umpteenth album by Oosterhuis that she has recorded in an intimate setting, it becomes dangerous that she has performed this trick for the umpteenth time. Still, with the input of her fellow musicians, she knows how to distinguish this album from those other intimate albums and that is certainly worth a plus. A second Dutch-language album is also planned, but one with newly written songs. A project that we are looking forward to enormously and which will hopefully feature songs that are just that little bit more energetic, than the pure songs that this album carries with it. Leven Van De Liefde is certainly a nice snack as a project, but to be honest: a singer in the form of Trijntje Oosterhuis simply deserves a blast from an album with strong and original Nederpop songs.  Translate By Google https://www.nieuweplaat.nl/album/trijntje-oosterhuis-leven-liefde/

Candy Dulfer was just twenty years old when she scored her first international hit, "Lily Was Here, a duet with Eurhythmics guitarist Dave Stewart. At that time, she was already an experienced saxophonist, having started at the age of six, heavily influenced by her father, jazz saxophonist Hans Dulfer. Though "Lily Was Here performed well on the pop charts, Dulfer has been more of a soul/funk artist, evidenced by Candy Store. Dutch-born Dulfer led her first band, Funky Stuff, at the age of fourteen. Her career has included performances with Stewart, Prince, Pink Floyd, Maceo Parker, Aretha Franklin, Beyonce and David Sanborn, among others. Candy Store features all-original songs, penned by Dulfer and her sidemen, Thomas Bank, Chance Howard and Ulco Bed. "Candy is a funky tribute to the band leader. Howard, who wrote the track, raps while Bed delivers a soulful rhythm guitar. Dulfer plays alto sax in a style similar to that of Sanborn. The music is even of the soul-jazz style that was Sanborn's signature for many years.

Bassist Howard opens "Music = Love with a Bootsy Collins-like vocal intro. Howard and Dulfer perform vocals on this song, which includes the horns of Jan van Duikeren and Louk Boudesteijn. John Blackwell joins the ensemble on drums, one of only three tracks with an acoustic drum kit the album's one glaring weakness. Heavy reliance on programming is usually the death knell for any kind of jazz album, but excellent songwriting and strong performances by Dulfer and others easily overcome the artificial sounds of the programs. A good example of this is "La Cabana, a Latin piece that begs for drums, cymbals, congas and perhaps timbales. Yet the horns, Bank's keys and Howard's bass still manage to make this a delightful tune. Dulfer shows off her singing chops on "Summertime, a playful dance track. She also adds tenor and baritone to her sax play. The background horns are fabulous. Howard's bass helps set the tone for "Smokin' Gun, a reggae-like song. Bank's programming sounds more like the real thing on this track than any other, including crisp cymbal slides. Candy Store is not for hardcore jazz fans who want their music straight, with no outside influences. However, Dulfer is a diverse musician whose music includes elements of pop, soul and funk. If you approach this album without any preconceptions of what jazz ought to be, you may find plenty to enjoy here. ~ Woodrow Wilkins  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/candy-store-candy-dulfer-heads-up-international-review-by-woodrow-wilkins.php

van Lins is complete musician, distinguished for his refined harmonies and great arrangements. As the most recorded Brazilian living artist, the composer began playing piano at age eighteen, very influenced by the music he heard in his childhood in the United States, jazz and bossa nova.

His harmonic construction, quite unusual in Brazilian music, is one of the features that would make Ivan Lins become so respected among musicians around the world. He had many successes as a singer and composer as is the case of "Abre Alas", "Somos todos iguais esta noite”, "Começar de novo" (“The Island”), “Vitoriosa”, many of them created by the artistic duo Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins.

The political atmosphere decisively influenced his career in the 70´s and remains and important issue at his work till now. Ivan Lins has released numerous recordings, all over the Globe. Always reflecting contemporary issues , his work is renewed and always brings new musical values and ideals, without losing his originality. From the second half of the 80´s on, Ivan Lins emphasized his international career, especially in the U.S. where he was recorded by major artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Barbra Streisand and many others. In Brazil, Ivan is constantly recorded by many of the great artists, such as Elis Regina, Simone, Gal Costa, Emilio Santiago, Djavan, Chico Buarque, among many others. In 1991, together with Vitor Martins, Ivan founded the record label Velas , an independent and national record company. His label promoted remarkable releases, revealing great new artists such as Guinga, Chico Cesar, Lenine and establishing names such as Edu Lobo, Fatima Guedes and Zizi Possi, among many others. Eclectic in her musical performance, Lins also composed soundtracks for films, besides several tracks and themes for novels and series.

Trijntje Oosterhuis is one of the best pop/jazz singers from the Netherlands and she deserves a big shout out to the world. So this new compilation with the stuff she did in the last 15 years is a great way to do that. She is also known as Traincha, which makes is possible for non-native speakers to pronounce her name right to some extent.

Trijntje started out as the lead singer for the band Total Touch, which she co-founded with her brother Tjeerd Oosterhuis. Tjeerd is a skilled musician and is by now a good producer as well. This compilation contains the Total Touch singles Somebody Else's Lover, I'll Say Goodbye, Standin' Strong Together, Touch Me There, One Moment Your Mind and Love Me In Slow Motion from the two albums the band made in the 90s. The sound is kinda R&B from that decade, but the songs still are as strong as I remember them from back in those days. Strong vocals from Trijntje and her magnificent background vocalists on top of catchy songs. Good stuff.

She started singing as a solo artist by singing songs in Dutch. There's De Zee which is the 'title' song for the opening of the Amsterdam Arena, the football stadium of Ajax Amsterdam. It was followed by a duet with Marco Borsato called Wereld Zonder Jou, which would have been a great single when she could have sung it with a male vocalist who could actually sing. It still is a decent song, though. Next there is Vlieg Met Me Mee, which is the title songs for the Dutch film Abeltje, about a small boy traveling to New York and Africa in an elevator. Great song, even when Trijntje performs it nowadays. You can forget about the film, though. Very special is Ken Je Mij, which is a song Tjeerd wrote to the lyrics of father Huub Oosterhuis. The lyrics actually are a poem Huub wrote when Trijntje was born. Great song with a very emotional story. Further songs in Dutch are Nu Dat Jij Er Bent, which was recorded in honour of the birth of the Dutch crown princess Amalia van Oranje, and Brief Aan Jou for which Trijntje provided the chorus to this song of the one of the two rappers for the Dutch Opposites. All these songs prove the greatness of Trijntje’s voice as well as the fact that she should continue to record in Dutch as well.

Trijntje released a couple of solo cd’s with her own material, but is well known for her interpretations of other people’s songs as well as her jazz concerts and Blue Note recordings. She recorded cover albums with songs from Stevie Wonder (For Once In My Life), Michael Jackson (I Want You Back and Music & Me, the album was recorded as a way to express her grieve to the death of MJ), Billie Holliday (God Bless The Child) and Burt Bacherach. The last name is a bit special. Trijntje recorded an album with Bacherach covers together with The Metropole Orchestra, called The Look Of Love. Burt Bacherach heard the recording and was so impressed he wrote a new song for Trijntje, which lead to a second album with the new song Who’ll Speak For Love as the title track. Both albums show perfectly why the songs from Burt are so good and what a fantastic singer Trijntje is. One more shout out: the magnificent The Metropole Orchestra, which is the best orchestra in the world for these kinds of recordings ranging from pop and jazz (both as a full orchestra as well as the big band version) to classical. If you don’t believe me, ask the numerous artists that have recorded with them in the past, including Elvis Costello, Moke, Ivan Lins and Within Temptation.

The compilation contains further duets with Lionel Richie (love the song, but once again should have had a better male vocalist), Frank McComb (nice song, but the weakest song from the big band album Sundays In New York), Raoul Midon (a bit dull) and Herman Brood (should have been left out here, this song does do nothing for me). To prove Trijntje is nowhere near retirement, the album includes a couple of new songs. Good Day is a nice upbeat song written by Jamie Cullum. Ain’t Who You Are shows some signs of Total Touch and Since We Got Back The Power is the kind of soul ballad Trijntje does best. So there it is, a great introduction to Trijntje. This album contains some songs that are so so, but since it is a double album it is worth every penny (or euro cent, as we say in The Netherlands). It shows Trijntje as a very versatile singer, with a unique place in the Dutch pop/jazz scene.  http://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/47067/Trijntje-Oosterhuis-We%E2%80%99ve-Only-Just-Begun/

Jazz-pop vocalist Trijntje Oosterhuis (aka Traincha) was born in Amsterdam on February 5, 1973. Daughter of a theologian (Huub Oosterhuis) and a musician (Jozefien Melief, flutist for the Amsterdam Promenada Orchestra), Trijntje was brought up in a culturally rich, supportive household. In 1990,at age 17, she formed a group with her brother Tjeerd called Total Touch. Together the siblings performed consistently, even entering the Grote Prijs van Nederland, an important amateur music competition. Trijntje developed a good reputation regionally, which led to collaborations with increasingly influential artists. Her partnership with the well-established saxophonist Candy Dulfer began with a two-year international tour following their first joint effort, "Big Girl", in 1995. The following year Trijntje's work with Total Touch reached new heights with the release of their self-titled debut. Two years later the group's follow-up, "This Way", hit number one on Dutch charts, ultimately going quadruple platinum. Total Touch split as the siblings began to develop different career paths, beginning with Trijntje's solo debut, "For Once in My Life", which went gold in 1999. Her self-titled follow-up, released in 2003, established Oosterhuis as her nation's premier jazz diva. Signed to Blue Note in 2004, Oosterhuis continued to distance herself from the pop world with "Strange Fruit", drawing repertoire from the likes of George Gershwin and Billie Holiday. The 2005 release "See You as I Do" and 2006's Burt Bacharach collaboration "The Look of Love" have continued to distinguish Oosterhuis as one of the finest European vocal jazz talents of her generation.(~~Evan C.
