Tenor saxophonist Larry Schneider and pianist Andy LaVerne make a great team. Their follow-up date to an earlier duo session for Steeplechase CD (Bill Evans Person We Knew) adds bassist Mike Richmond and drummer Keith Copeland to create a fiery quartet. LaVerne's "Blind Date" has an infectious hook and will invite obvious comparisons to the classic quartet of John Coltrane. But the heart of the CD is a trio of lush ballads, including "Stardust," "Autumn Leaves," and "Body and Soul," beautifully performed with lyrical treatments. Their buoyant setting of "How My Heart Sings," a favorite of Evans, is first rate, while their hip arrangement of Charles Mingus' "Peggy's Blue Skylight" is the perfect close to a rewarding release. ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/blind-date-mw0000891911

Larry Schneider on this latest recording plays alto sax instead of tenor sax which is his instrument. And when a jazz saxophone player picks up alto, there is one thing in his mind: Charlie Parker. “Larry Schneider Plays Charlie Parker” is what this CD is all about. A formidable task superbly executed.

In 1967, following in the footsteps of Tadd Dameron and Quincy Jones, Rhoda Scott arrives in France to take classes with Nadia Boulanger. Barely a year later, she recorded her debut album Barclay, Take a Ladder duet with one of the best drummers of the moment, Daniel Humair. A long series of albums will follow, two of which are particularly distinguished by the presence of first-rate accompanists: Mach II (1971) in which his long-time accomplice, American saxophonist / flutist Joe Thomas and especially Rhoda Scott in New York, participate. (1976), the result of the collaboration between the virtuoso organist and the great orchestra of Thad Jones / Mel Lewis. Backed by an outstanding Italian rhythm section (pianist Gaspare DiLieto, acoustic bassist Dario Deidda, and drummer Amedeo Ariano), tenor saxophonist Larry Schneider takes tunes such as Charlie Parker's "Mohawk," Henry Mancini's "Days of Wine and Roses," and Johnny Mercer's (with Joseph Kosma) "Autumn Leaves," and confuses and exceeds expectations.

Rather than simply knocking out the melodies, followed by solos, followed again by returning to the heads, the saxophonist re-orients the listener by subverting the mix, but without any disrespect toward the original. The approach freshens and infuses new life into the tunes. Schneider's a cappella rendering of "Stardust" is a minor tour de force. Recorded live at the Jazz on the Coast Festival in Italy, the sound quality is surprisingly good. By Steve Loewy https://www.allmusic.com/album/live-at-jazz-on-the-coast-mw0001089125

What is so appealing about Larry Schneider is his ability to absorb so many different styles of jazz and to do it well. Previously, he has shown an affinity for Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins, and here you can hear Bird and Trane with a touch of Rollins, but no Ornette. Schneider's version of "My One and Only Love" features the sort of thin-toned melody line that Coltrane expressed so well. Schneider follows up with a stunning solo. The backup, consisting of guitar, vibes, bass, and drums, is adequate, but it is Schneider who lights the fireworks when they occur. His appealing, big tone is most effective on the ballads, such as "The Days of Wine and Roses" or "You Don't Know What Love Is." Even on the faster tunes, such as "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," his throaty tone steals the show. Bird's "Mohawk" is taken at a relaxed pace, but the leader double times it, not giving in an inch. All the compositions are not up to snuff, but on the ones that are, Schneider sets the pace. ~Steve Loewy

This was pianist Bill Evans' final studio session, a rare outing with a quintet (starring trumpeter Tom Harrell and Larry Schneider on tenor and soprano) and his first recording with the members of his final regular trio (bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera). The playing time is over 61 minutes. The group interprets "For All We Know" and seven Evans originals, including "Peri's Scope" and "Five." The thoughtful session is full of lyrical melodies and strong solos; even Evans' electric keyboard work on a few tunes is distinctive. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/we-will-meet-again-mw0000276230

On his third CD, vibraphonist Joe Locke leads a solid quartet which includes pianist Kenny Werner, bassist Ron McClure, and drummer Ronnie Burrage. Locke's virtuosity on his instrument is demonstrated throughout the date. The opening medley begins with a solo by the leader of "Masada" (an introspective piece written by a friend of his, saxophonist Danny Wilensky) and the rhythm section joins him as he segues into a brisk take of the waltz "Summernight." Tenor saxophonist Larry Schneider is added on several tracks, including a dark but swinging take of "All of You" and a turbocharged run through "You Say You Care." Locke also wrote several originals, including the unpredictable "Smoke and Mirrors," which was originally written as an introduction to Miles Davis' "Nardis," and a brief duet with Werner, "Heart of Nowhere." This 1990 release was an early indicator of Joe Locke's arrival on the jazz scene, which was followed by many additional strong studio sessions as the 20th century drew to a close. Post-bop fans should consider this CD an essential acquisition. ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/present-tense-mw0000436629

Larry Schneider & Andy LaVerne - Bill Evans... Person We Knew

(6:08)  9. Elsa
(5:09) 10. Funkallero
(0:18) 11. Bill's Signature

This duo date by tenor saxophonist Larry Schneider and pianist Andy LaVerne is a tribute to the late Bill Evans, covering both Evans' compositions as well as works by others that he recorded. Evans' problems with drug addiction throughout his adult life are all too well-known, so it almost seems like "Re: Person I Knew" is actually played as a tribute to its composer's struggle with life. Unlike Evans' often rapid fire and melodic interpretations, LaVerne plays an almost dirge-like line to accompany Schneider's almost anguished sounding tenor sax. The duo reverts to a joyous roller coaster ride through Evans' tricky "34 Skidoo" and adds a Latin rhythm to his infrequently played "Orbit." "Time Remembered" is one of Evans' most gorgeous ballads, and Schneider's soulful playing is underscored by LaVerne's shimmering impressionistic piano line. They catch the playful spirit of "Funkallero" and even add Evans' brief signature stag, which he used at the end of each live set.

The non-Evans tracks also show plenty of imagination. The choice of "Dream Gypsy" is an inspired one, since it appeared only once in Evans' considerable discography (on Undercurrent, with Jim Hall). The duo improvisation that opens John Carisi's "Israel" is breathtaking, while Earl Zindars' "Elsa" is a beautiful jazz waltz that is also well-interpreted. The thought that went into the arrangements and song selections (as well as the consistently high level of playing) make this tribute to Evans an essential acquisition for anyone who is a fan of his many contributions to jazz. ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/bill-evans-person-we-knew-mw0000517077

Pianist Jim McNeely, who includes stints with Ted Curson, Stan Getz, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, and Phil Woods on his lengthy resume, has been gradually recognized by the jazz public as a terrific composer, but these 1976 sessions, which mark one of his earliest dates as a leader, show him to be a very advanced writer at an early stage of his career. The hypnotic opener, "Wishful Thinking," features Larry Schneider on soprano sax in a modal setting. McNeely switches to electric piano for his playful "Little Green Men." On the catchy "Tipe Tizwe," based on a traditional African folk song, the leader plays both piano and African thumb piano (which is rarely heard in jazz), and is joined only by percussionist Sam Jacobs. "Rain's Dance" is a driving post-bop composition that marks the typical ebb and flow in the intensity of a summer storm; it's heard in two separate takes, featuring fine solos by McNeely, bassist Mike Richmond, and Larry Schenider on tenor sax. This adventurous date by Jim McNeely is well worth acquiring. ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/rains-dance-mw0000580108

Mike Richmond has expressed his love of music on a global level. In addition to accompanying such stellar jazz musicians as Miles Davis and Stan Getz and folk/blues singer/songwriter Richie Havens, the Philadelphia-born bass player has performed in concert with Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar and the South Indian Orchestra and has served as chief instructor for the National German Jazz Orchestra. Initially a guitar player, Richmond was inspired by a Bill Haley and the Comets show that he attended with his parents in the mid-'50s. He switched to the bass after joining his high school orchestra. Richmond's understanding of world music developed at an early age. His mother frequently played Middle Eastern records in the family home. His interests in Indian music were sparked by the soundtrack of the late-'40s television series Ramar of the Jungle and the Beatles' involvement with Indian music.

Richmond has been involved in some of jazz's most impressive projects. He participated in the Miles Davis and Quincy Jones-collaborative concert in Montreux, Switzerland, which became Davis's final performance. He subsequently replaced Charles Mingus in the Mingus Dynasty. On his debut solo album Basic Tendencies, Richmond was accompanied by harp player Lois Colin, percussionists Glen Velez and Joe Passaro, and oud player Simon Shaheen. Richmond received a Teacher of the Year award in 1994 for his teaching at New York University. ~ Craig Harris https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/mike-richmond/id5324858#fullText
