Bio ~ http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Motis

Febrero is a declaration of pure joy. With a repertoire chosen by Andrea Motis along with her friend Federico Dannemann, and recorded like in the golden era of jazz (all of the musicians playing together in the same place, at the same time), she sounds relaxed, happy, but also bluesy, knowing that those unique summer days in Chile will fade away, like everything else in life.

On Febrero you hear two jazz standards by the Gershwin brothers and melodies from the Brazilian and Latin American tradition, including two classics from the Inti-Illimani songbook composed by Horacio Salinas. Above all, Motis remembers the atmosphere of these days and notes that «through the delicate arrangements and how the recording sounds, these songs bring me back to the feeling of calmness and deep joy that we all had together during those summer days in Chile». Few albums sound happier than Febrero. By Joan Anton Cararach https://jazztojazz.com/en/product/febrero/

In 2021, the Barcelona Jazz Festival dedicated the artist portrait to me and I had 5 concerts. For one of them I had the idea of bringing together all the musicians with whom I had recorded a CD from the “presentas” collection. There were 15 musicians and I could almost form a big band: Andrea Motis, Eva Fernández, Magalí Datzira, Rita Payés, Marc Martín, Joan Mar Sauqué, Èlia Bastida, Joan Codina, Alba Armengou, Carla Motis, Joana Casanova, Jan Domènech, Marçal Perramon, Joan Martí and Alba Esteban.

I completed the sections with two trumpet players, Elsa Armengou and Gerard Peñaranda, a saxophonist, Koldo Munné (with whom I am currently recording his presentation CD), three trombonists (Claudia Rostey, Max Tato and Perot Rigau, and for the rhythm section I had the one who had been the first drummer of the SAJB: Arnau Julià.

Each of the musicians presented chose a theme. In most cases I asked for special arrangements for the occasion and Joan Monné was in charge of writing them. All the recordings I have made are important and make me feel proud and happy, but the one we made for JAZZING 12 VOL. 2, with practically all the musicians who had been members of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, and this one you are holding in your hands are really very special to me.

They are the summary of something important, of something wonderful; they are the summary of a precious dream that has no end. The music on this new CD is marvellous and we can hear the maturity they have all reached over the years. None of the protagonists of this work are now in the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, but I feel that each and every one of them will always be part of our history. A story of unwanted success, the result of constant work and of believing that jazz can be and is a music that young people can fall in love with. This big band was my dream and now, once again, it has become a reality. https://jazztojazz.com/en/product/joan-chamorro-presentas-big-band/

"A friend recommended Andrea to me, and she's definitely a "comer," someone worth a lot of encouragement. I'm frankly tired of guitar-strumming singer-songwriters who do all "original material" because the harmonies of standards (like "Body and Soul" or "All the Things You Are") are totally beyond their reach. Andrea is taking a far more sophisticated path, reminiscent of Chet Baker -in both her singing and trumpet work- than any other musician.

She was in her early teens when this album was made. Her voice lacks mature body and firm, sustaining breath support both her singing and trumpet- but is nonetheless most pleasant, with clear elocution and precise intonation. And her trumpet work sparkles with note choices that are melodic and "hip." You can only hope she has the right teachers and influences to nurture her undeniable talent. Also, one might hope that she doesn't overdo the guitars. I'm not hearing the support of a firm walking bass or of a drummer with a strong hi-hat clap and ringing ride cymbal. Pianos are on the verge of extinction the reason I go back to Bill Evans and Duke Ellington for the majority of my listening. The presence of Scott Hamilton makes this album a no-brainer.

Andrea Motis is back with her latest solo project, Loopholes. Motis is a central part of the Spanish jazz scene, and on this new album, she embarks on a search for a completely new, unconventional style with her own compositions and those of her comrade-in-arms Christoph Mallinger. The compositions borrow from electric jazz, funk, and neo-soul. The twelve tracks feature Motis singing in Catalan, her mother tongue, as well as in Spanish, Portuguese, English, and German, and comments on her vocal expression alternately trained on both instruments with trumpet or saxophone.

4 years ago, Joan Chamorro was commissioned to assemble and lead an orchestra as a tribute to Miles Davis, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of his death. Pere Pons, artistic director of the Jamboree Club and San Miguel Mas i Mas Festival was the one who made the assignment to Chamorro: he wanted it to accompany the publication of a special issue dedicated to the Missouri trumpeter’s imprint left in Catalonia. Thus, besides the memories, anecdotes and words, all would revive in its most natural form, music. The effort would result in a unique concert, on August 31, 2011 at the Apolo in Barcelona, that would be recorded and published together with the monograph. Taking advantage of the enormous work that he had been doing with the Sant Andreu Jazz Band and Andrea Motis, Joan Chamorro decided to incorporate some of the young ones to form the Miles Tribut Big Band. They would also count with great soloists as bassist Carles Benavent (the only one who had come to work with Miles Davis), guitarist Jordi Bonell, saxophonist Llibert Fortuny and trumpeter Matthew Simon. Selected themes reviewed the different stages of Miles Davis, and arrangements were ordered from Alfons Carrascosa and Sergi Verges, two masters of detail. The production received its name recalling the 1960's Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis and Gil Evans. The concert was a resounding success: musicians, critics and audience. Today, four years later, the tribute has been celebrated again, this time at the Palau de la Musica Catalana and as the opening concert of 13 San Miguel Mas i Mas Festival. And Joan Chamorro has decided to reissue this particular album and finally make it available to everyone.

Personnel:  Joan Chamorro (Conductor, baritone, tenor and alto sax, bass clarinet); Matthew Simon, Jaume Peña, Alba Armengou (Trumpet); Andrea Motis (Trumpet and vocals); Josep Tutusaus, Sergi Verges, Dani Tellez (Trombone); Eva Fernandez (Baritone, alto and soprano sax and clarinet); Joan Marti, Alba Esteban (Alto sax); Isce Datzira (Tenor sax and clarinet); Carles Vazquez (Tenor sax and flute); Joan Monne (Piano and keyboards); Curro Galvez (Double bass, electric bass); Carles Benavent (Bass); Esteve Pi (Drums).

In 2012 we recieved a proposal by the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès to make a concert together in the cycle Simfònics al Palau. Immediatly we found the idea very interesting. Before, on our second album, Feeling Good, we had recorded some songs with a string quartet and we loved the experience. Now they gave us the opportunity to go further and be accompanied by a full symphonic orchestra.

We accepted the proposal and we agreed on the repertoire to write the arrangements based on it, looking for a variety of rythms and that everyone felt comfortable. The concert was a success and the result is reflected in this new work. We hope you enjoy it. https://andreamotisjoanchamorro.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-palau-de-la-m-sica

Andrea Motis and Joan Chamorro are an unlikely musical team. Born more than 30 years apart, they hail from two very different and distinct musical generations. And yet they are the two primary figures in a series of projects in their hometown of Barcelona since 2010. In less than five years, Motis and Chamorro have set their city and other parts of Europe ablaze with the energetic sounds of jazz from either side of the Atlantic. Since they began collaborating, Motis and Chamorro have recorded four albums together, 5 with the Sant Andreau Jazz Band, 7 more with different projects, toured throughout Europe and South America, and have worked on stage or in the studio with a variety of high-profile musicians, including Dick Oatts, Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski, Scott Robinson, Terrell Stafford, Wycliffe Gordon, Jesse Davis, Bobby Gordon and many others. Along the way, they have received numerous awards and accolades for their artistic endeavors. In 2011, they received an ARC Award for Best New Artist (2011) and an Artist of the Year Award from the Enderrock Jaç Awards.

In addition to the awards, they have also received nominations by some of the most prestigious music organizations in Europe: Best Group of the Year (ANJIM, 2011), Best Jazz and Blues Group (Arc Awards, 2011), and Best Theater and Concert Hall Tour (ARC Awards, 2011). And yet, for all of their successes, their story is a simple one that begins with little more than a teacher, a student, and a shared passion for music in general and jazz in particular. Joan Chamorro was born in Barcelona in September 1962. He spent his childhood listening to pop music, but didn’t start focusing on classical music and jazz until he began playing the saxophone and guitar at age 18. He attended the Taller de Musics, a music school in Barcelona devoted to jazz. After four years, he gave up classical music and the guitar and focused his efforts entirely on jazz and the saxophone. In addition to playing and recording with the Taller de Musics, Chamorro also played live gigs with several local big bands. “I was very lucky to be a part of this scene,” he recalls, “and to have the chance to play with great soloists from some very popular big bands.” In the years since he received his music degree, Chamorro has played with numerous high-profile musicians from around the world: Stevie Wonder, Manhattan Transfer, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, and recorded with Tete Montoliu, Bebo Valdes, and many others. “It is always great to share experiences and music with such a great cast of international musicians,” he says. “And it’s an amazing opportunity to grow as an artist.” In the midst of these various collaborations, Chamorro has also directed the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, a group in Barcelona made up of children and teenagers between the ages of 9 and 20. It was here that he first met Andrea Motis, an 11-year-old trumpeter who was also one of his saxophone students.

“She was always a very serious student,” Chamorro recalls. “One day I was teaching the band and I asked if anyone wanted to sing a song, and she was the first and only one who said yes. She was 13 years old by this time. From the very beginning, I heard something special in her voice, something that could be improved if she were given the opportunity to learn and grow in the company of good musicians. I talked with her parents, and everyone agreed that she would be part of my various music projects.” By this young age, Motis had already been immersed in music of every kind. She’d been playing the trumpet since age 7, and her earliest musical memories include Charlie Mingus (one of her father’s favorite musicians) as well as Cuban jazz. By age 10, she starts exploring just about every form of American jazz until nowadays listening to great American female vocalists such as Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday and Nancy Wilson, also Cécile McLorin Salvant, Amy Winehouse, Esperanza Spalding, Gretchen Parlato and instrumentalists such as Tom Harrell, Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, Perico Sambeat as well as iconic jazz artists like Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown. “The first time I sang in public was for Chamorro’s audition at the Taller de Music school,” says Motis. “I sang a Basin Street blues number that Joan later uploaded to the internet. After that, he invited me to sing on his album.”

The album was Joan Chamorro Presenta Andrea Motis, released in 2010 when Motis was 14. As the title suggests, the album is a showcase for Chamorro’s young protégé who plays trumpet, saxophone and sings throughout the recording. “We recorded a lot of songs in different ways,” says Motis. “While deciding the final album repertoire we realized that we liked most of the songs that were sung. That’s why Joan thought of the album as a way to introduce me as a musician and singer, because my role turned out to be more important than we had originally thought it would be.” In the final cut of the album, Motis sings on 16 of the 17 tracks. “She showed a great sensibility and a capacity to share emotions,” says Chamorro. “There was a great natural quality in every song we recorded.” The project proved to be an extremely valuable learning experience. Motis recalls: “It gave me the opportunity to play for the first time with amazing musicians such as Ignasi Terraza, Josep Traver, Eseve Pi, Dani Alonso and Bobby Gordon, and American clarinetist who played with all the great classic jazz artists before he died.” Feeling Good, a recording of live performances throughout Barcelona, followed in 2012. Two years after the first album, Motis had grown and matured as a musician and a vocalist. “This was the point where she started improvising, and it’s reflected in the CD, where all of her solos are entirely hers,” says Chamorro. “I trusted her knowledge and encouraged her to improvise during our shows too. We were performing a lot at that time and it was a good time to practice that. It was amazing to see her progression in every rehearsal and every show.”Their third recording, Live in Jamboree Barcelona, captured the band during their three appearances at the Barcelona music festival with guest saxophonist Scott Hamilton. “The thing flowed so smoothly,” says Motis. “We played new songs and some others that were in our previous repertoire. We felt truly at ease playing the music. It was a very special experience and I was truly happy with the final result.”

Chamorro and Motis recorded yet another live big band performance this time on video as well as audio in 2014 at the Barcelona International Jazz Festival. The CD/DVD package is scheduled for release in August 2014. The majority of the repertoire in the upcoming release by The Motis Chamorro Big Band is sung by Motis, but Chamorro’s baritone sax and Motis’s trumpet also figure prominently in the mix.“This project includes the very best musicians in the Barcelona jazz scene,” says Chamorro. “Many of them are excellent soloists who play an important role in the tracks on which they play.” In addition to their extensive work in the Barcelona scene, The Motis Chamorro Group has also played numerous festivals in France, Switzerland, Brazil and Turkey. “Andrea and I are doing the best we can to share our music with as many people as possible,” says Chamorro. “Who knows what we’ll be doing in the future, or where we’ll be doing it? But I do envision a beautiful future for her. She is already a well known artist, and she will be even more well know in years to come. She deserves it. She has a great talent, ability and magic necessary to do so. All of this comes from the things that I think are most important: honesty, authenticity and humility.” “I’m very happy to be collaborating in new musical projects, experimenting with new styles,” says Motis. “And as Joan says: ‘Creativity has no bounds or limits.’ We have so many projects and opportunities, and the chance to collaborate with so many artists. Maintaining this vibe is the best that I can hope for right now and for the future. We’ll see!”  http://www.sasamusic.com/artist/andrea-motis-and-joan-chamorro

And the best of all is that his progression is rising and unstoppable.”

Magalí Datzira is a double bass player and a vocalist. In the second CD-DVD of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, which she took part in the recording of when she was only 13 years old, she started to sing and we were able to glimpse an original and very personal voice. She has a very particular way of approaching tempo and melodies, reading them in a special way and confronting a score as if compass bars did not exist ~ Joan Chamorro

I wanted this to be an assorted album: a combination of different rhythms, different voices and textures… a variety that essentially represents the different tonalities of one and the same color. ~ Magalí Datzira

It is impossible to remain indifferent whilst listening to Magalí singing. Her voice is special, uniquely beautiful, and combines sweetness and character in a balanced way, instinctively, I would say. http://jazztojazz.bandcamp.com/album/joan-chamorro-presenta-magali-datzira

Feeling Good is well named: the feelgood vibe is strong and the love of music that reaches out from this album is pretty much guaranteed to leave listeners with a similarly good feeling. It's the second album from Joan Chamorro bassist, saxophonist and director of Barcelona's Sant Andreu Jazz Band and the band's star member, the teenage singer and instrumentalist Andrea Motis. Chamorro's name may come first, but it's Motis' personality that shines through most strongly on Feeling Good. Chamorro can take much of the credit for this he's mentored Motis and other members of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band for some years, creating a band with the talent and maturity that belies the ages of its members (who are between 9 and 20 years old). Chamorro and Motis recorded this album at a series of live concerts between February and August 2012, when Motis was 16. Although Motis plays trumpet on a few songs (her trumpet solo on "Solitude" is charming) it's her singing that gets featured here. Motis' Sant Andreu bandmates appear on a couple of songs, including "Feeling Good" with the great Scott Robinson on tenor and trumpet.

However, it's a core group of excellent Spanish players Chamorro, pianist Ignasi Terraza, guitarist Josep Traver and drummer Esteve Pi (with bassist David Mengual joining in when Chamorro plays tenor) that provides the crucial instrumental accompaniment for the singer. Motis' voice has been likened to Norah Jones,' a reasonable comparison but one that doesn't do justice to Motis' vocal range. "Bésame Mucho" shows that she can swing, "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To You" suggests that she's a blues singer in the making. On "The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea" and "Lover Come Back To Me" she displays a knowing cheekiness reminiscent of R&B singer Julia Lee. Cut to the fragile cover of "Moon River" with just her core quartet for company, Terraza and Traver playing with exceptional delicacy and taste she makes Audrey Hepburn sound like Janis Joplin. Comparisons don't retain their validity for too long when they refer to a teenage singer who's developing at speed. Two versions of "Lover Man," recorded just a couple of months apart, show how quickly things move. On the first, a lushly orchestrated '40s style version featuring a string quartet, Motis' voice has a naive, child-like, quality rather at odds with the lyrics' sentiments.

On the second, Chamorro and Traver providing a sympathetic bass and guitar backing, Motis sounds more mature, more wordly it's far easier to believe that she's lived the story. Motis is already a big name in Spain, selling out major concert halls. She's still learning, still gaining confidence, but her talent is undoubted. Feeling Good is a fine album, but it's almost certainly just the beginning. ~ Bruce Lindsay  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/feeling-good-andrea-motis-temps-records-spain-review-by-bruce-lindsay.php
