Miss Pat Healy (1927-2020) was born in Cleveland but at age 22 she settled in Los Angeles. She spent years filling various jobs before having the courage to make impromptu appearances at some local nightclubs. Finally in 1957 spirited by pianist Joe Marino, she quit her job and soon emerged as a praised and applauded singer by the audiences, winning soon her first professional contract as a guest vocalist on the television show Stars of Jazz, backed by the Paul Bley trio. As a consequence of her performance, she was offered to record for World Pacific Records.

On Just Before Dawn, her debut album, Pat sang eleven standard songs, some of them quite unusual, backed by cellist Fred Katz’s intimate approach to arranging and conducting, and by Joe Marino’s quartet. In both settings, she revealed herself as a vocalist with clarity of sound, style, sensitivity, and the ability to sing difficult songs, with the right accompaniment, resulting in this distinctive album, the first and only she recorded.The remaining recordings come from two later appearances of Pat in Stars of Jazz, where she can be heard with the backing of the Keith Williams orchestra, and finally, alone with her favorite accompanist, Joe Marino.By Jordi Pujol

When one evaluates Paul Horn's career, it is as if he were two people, pre- and post-1967. In his early days, Horn was an excellent cool-toned altoist and flutist, while later he became a new age flutist whose music is often best used as background music for meditation. Horn started on piano when he was four and switched to alto at the age of 12. After a stint with the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra on tenor, Horn was Buddy Collette's replacement with the popular Chico Hamilton Quintet (1956-1958), playing alto, flute, and clarinet. He became a studio musician in Los Angeles, but also found time during 1957-1966 to record cool jazz albums for Dot (later reissued on Impulse), World Pacific, Hi Fi Jazz, Columbia, and RCA, and he participated in a memorable live session with Cal Tjader in 1959. In addition, in 1964, Horn recorded one of the first Jazz Masses, utilizing an orchestra arranged by Lalo Schifrin. In 1967, the second part of Paul Horn's career began; he studied transcendental meditation in India and became a teacher. The following year, he recorded unaccompanied flute solos at the Taj Mahal (where he enjoyed interacting with the echoes), and went on to record in the Great Pyramid, tour China (1979) and the Soviet Union, record using the sounds of killer whales as "accompaniment," and found his own label Golden Flute. ~ Scott Yanow https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-jazz-years-selected-pieces-1961-1963/49491612

By 1989, when Paul Horn recorded Brazilian Images, people were beginning to realize that he was no longer ahead of his time. In the 1960’s Horn began a quixotic musical journey that opened a whole world of places and people to him. He spent the 1970s and 80s playing in some of the worlds great sacred spaces, and collaborating with musicians from many traditions. As far back as the 60s he unwittingly anticipated the ‘World Music’ and ‘New Age’ trends; during the next two decades, he helped to define them. By the time he made this album at the dawn of yet another decade, the times had pretty well caught up to him.

“I love Brazil,’ says Horn, “even as a child. When I first had the opportunity to go there in 1970, I knew why. The atmosphere is charged with music, dance, sunshine and beautiful women. Paradise. It is also a country of paradoxes. From some of the worst slums of the world, the Favelas, comes the happiest music in the world, the samba. On a tour of Brazil in 1990 with guitarist Andre Geraissati, “I found the gentler side of Brazil through his writing and the unique voices he uses. Vibraphonist Cal Tjader is heard leading five different groups throughout this set, but the identities of the flutists, bassists, and pianists are less important than knowing that Tjader, Willie Bobo (on drums and timbales), and the great conga player Mongo Santamaria are on every selection. Formally trained in bass, composition and arranging, Don Bagley made his early reputation touring and recording with Stan Kenton from 1950-1953. He subsequently would work with Kenton again at different times, but in 1954 Bagley began heading his own bands. He was quite busy as a session musician as well; Bagley recorded in Los Angeles with Nat "King" Cole, Maynard Ferguson and Dexter Gordon from 1950-52, then did overseas dates with Zoot Sims, Lars Gullin and a sextet led by Frank Rosolino and Ake Persson in Paris and Sweden in 1953. Bagley worked extensively with Kenton again and with Les Brown between 1956 and 1967, but still found the time to record in 1957 and 1958 with bands whose rosters included at times Jimmie Rowles, Shelly Manne and Phil Woods. There were also engagements with Pete Fountain in 1959 and Ben Webster in 1961. Fantasy Records is to be commended for re-releasing so many of their classic Cal Tjader albums in the budget-priced two-for-one CD format, even if Sentimental Moods features one of their odder pairings. The first ten selections are culled from the dreamy mood music album Latin for Lovers (aka Latin for Lovers With Strings), and the final ten are from San Francisco Moods, a lean and mean West Coast jazz ode to his hometown. While these two sessions don't really go together, they do show you the breadth of what Tjader was recording for Fantasy at the time. While the Latin for Lovers selections aren't really Latin jazz (or even "Latin" or "jazz," for that matter), it is superior mood music with fine string arrangements written by Jack Weeks. If all lounge music was this good, the term couldn't be used as an insult. The soloists don't really stretch out at all, but Tjader, pianist Vince Guaraldi, and flutist Paul Horn each make their presence felt on regal, melodic passages. Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria are on the session, but unlike their sizzling one-track cameo on the next session's "Viva Cepeda," they are only around to keep strict time. So while the first half of the disc is upscale easy listening, those culled from San Francisco Moods show how underrated Tjader was at mainstream small-group jazz. Tjader starts out the session on piano, but on most tracks his vibraphone skills are given a real chance to shine. Tjader was always a giving group leader and guitarist Eddie Duran and the rest of the quartet are featured prominently. San Francisco Moods is an exhilarating session, one that veers from gritty, hard-swinging romps to uptown "chamber jazz" and back again without a hitch. Cal Tjader had such great success with Latin jazz that listeners and critics have tended to forget that he really was a major part of the cool West Coast jazz scene and that he recorded all kinds of music throughout his career. This a fabulous Paul Horn album, but you must accept that it is something of a "period piece" which was designed to have broad, mass, commercial appeal at that time (1966)…and, for whatever reason, simply did NOT (...and I like to think that that was because it was simply too good!... :-) Paul's tone on the flute, alto flute and bass flute (often without any vibrato) is gorgeous and his musical concept is unique. The tunes are very short, so Paul doesn't get a chance to stretch out much, but it does't really matter, because the stark simplicity in his lines (both on the heads and the improvising) is every bit as bold as it is striking. And (...you may be surprised to hear me say this...but I mean it!...) his musical style has the same stark clarity, simplicity and honesty that I have only heard from John Coltrane on the classic "Ballads" album (Impulse). That is an all too rare thing for ANY musician to achieve, on ANY instrument! So, please, ignore the meagre AMG rating and, if you can listen closely to this and get beyond the quite lush production - all of the "ooo's" and "ahh's" of the voices and the plucks of the harp (though, actually, Ralph Carmichael did an OUTSTANDING job with the arrangements, as well as in leading the choir, as did Paul Horn's quintet consisting of Mike Lang on piano, Lynn Blessing on vibes, Bill Plummer on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums) - then you will see what a truly remarkable work this is. It is actually my favourite Paul Horn album, and the one I return to most often. Finally, one of my favourite cuts on the album is missing here ("In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning") and, even with all of the 10 original tracks (rather like Trane's classic "Ballads" album), this one clocks in at not much more than 30 minutes...but it is heavy!...And I have no hesitation or compunction in mentioning BOTH of these Horn/Coltrane albums in the same breath!... ~Bill McBirnie

Joe Farrell's CTI albums of 1970-1976, which combined together his hard bop style with some pop and fusion elements, made him briefly popular among listeners not familiar with his earlier work. Farrell began playing clarinet when he was 11 and, after graduating from the University of Illinois in 1959, he moved to New York where he worked with the Maynard Ferguson Big Band (1960-1961) and Slide Hampton (1962), and recorded with Charles Mingus, Dizzy Reece, and a notable series with Jaki Byard (1965). A member of both the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra (1966-1969) and Elvin Jones' combo (1967-1970), Farrell's distinctive sound on tenor and general versatility were assets. A member of the original version of Return to Forever (1971-1972), Farrell was fairly prosperous during the 1970s when his solo CTI records sold well, but a drug problem gradually caught up with him. After performing with Mingus Dynasty in the late '70s and recording with Louis Hayes in 1983, he moved to Los Angeles where he scuffled during his last couple of years. Farrell died from bone cancer in 1986 at age 48. In addition to CTI, Farrell recorded as a leader for Warner Bros., Xanadu, Contemporary, RealTime, Timeless, and (with Airto and Flora Purim) Reference. ~ Scott Yanow

On the last day of August and the first day of September 1960, bassist Ray Brown recorded his third album for the Verve label, focusing most of his attention upon the cello while Joe Mondragon handled the bass. The 11-piece band on this date was conducted by arranger Russ Garcia and included reed players Paul Horn and Bob Cooper as well as pianist Jimmy Rowles. The results were typical of late-'50s West Coast mainstream jazz: familiar ballads and friendly, uplifting standards, tidily performed. Some of the tunes reach back to the 1920s, with "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody" serving as a surprisingly hip link with vaudeville as Brown's pizzicato maneuverings are punctuated with punchy blasts from reeds and brass. If one takes the time to place this recording within an historical context, an impressive evolution reveals itself. The first bassist to cross over to cello on records in modern times is believed to have been Oscar Pettiford, while Fred Katz popularized the warm-toned instrument through his work with drummer Chico Hamilton. 

The progression of jazz cellists since then is impressive, from Ray Brown, Sam Jones, Percy Heath and Ron Carter to Abdul Wadud, David Holland, David Darling, David Eyges and Diedre Murray. This thematic recording, with songs all relating to New York City, has vocalist Mel Tormé singing in fine fashion. Some of the familiar numbers are swingy, some stringy, but all are done with the heartfelt passion of a man who has lived in the Big Apple and has many tales to tell. Among some of the favorites are "Autumn in New York" with its ever poignant and heartbreaking lyric, the jumping "Let Me Off Uptown," a classic rendition of "Harlem Nocturne," and the obligatory "New York, New York." 

These sessions, reissued from Atlantic label recordings of 1963, have a disclaimer regarding the transfer from analog to digital, in that quality may be lost in spots. Don't let that dissuade you, as any dropouts are minimal. One of bassist David Friesen's better jazz sessions as a leader, this set (which has been reissued by other labels on CD) has some excellent playing by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson on "Amber Skies" and "Underlying," a rare opportunity for flutist Paul Horn to take a solo in a straight-ahead setting ("Blue and Green"), and was the first opportunity that pianist Chick Corea and drummer Paul Motian had to work together; percussionist Airto completes the sextet. This LP draws its material from three separate sessions led by drummer Chico Hamilton. Hamilton teams up with guitarist Howard Roberts and bassist George Duvivier for two songs, has two others in a trio with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist George Duvivier, and for the final four numbers is heard in the second version of his famous Quintet (the only selections that actually include Paul Horn). Paul Horn - Plenty Of Horn (2-Disc set)

While still a member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet, Paul Horn recorded two albums for the Dot label that were later reissued on Impulse and most recently came out in the late 1970's on this two-LP set. Switching between flute, clarinet and his cool-toned alto, Horn is in excellent form on the wide-ranging material which reflects the influence of Hamilton's chamber jazz approach but also contains some hard swinging. The settings range from a quartet to a ten-piece group that utilizes a string quartet and a 12-piece mini big band. Among the sidemen are drummer Hamilton, cellist Fred Katz, vibraphonist Larry Bunker and pianist Gerry Wiggins, but most of the emphasis is on Horn's playing (particularly on flute); he also contributed five originals. Worth searching for, this music has not yet been reissued on CD. ~Scott Yanow
