Nice to add some Jazz to the mix. Sarah Partridge is an American Jazz vocalist and songwriter of enough distinction that I'm aware of her, but apparently not enough to get a Wikipedia page. She started out as an actress (she's in Risky Business), but an evening of karaoke got her noticed by someone in the business and the next thing you know, she's a recording artist. She might be best known for "Bright Lights & Promises", an album of Jazz interpretations of the songs of Janis Ian. "A Partridge In A Pear Tree" (the title writes itself) is Sarah's first Christmas album. https://fireside.falalalala.com/sarah-partridge-a-partridge-in-a-pear-tree-jazz-fo-t5159.html

Jane Monheit - The Merriest

Styles: Vocal
File: MP3@320K/s
Time: 37:19
Size: 86,2 MB
Art: Front

(3:36) 1. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

(4:14) 7. Winter Wonderland
(4:07) 8. Christmas Time Is Here
(4:37) 9. It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

For veteran jazz chanteuse Jane Monheit, Christmas is all about warm affection, both romantic and neighborly. That, at least, is the impression she gives on her second seasonal album, The Merriest. Its nine selections fit her naturally saucy delivery, and the majority of them fit her propensity to interpret the works of songwriters comprising the mid-20th century Great American Songbook. She arguably adds a page by being the first artist to record a previously unissued number by late Broadway mainstay Cy Coleman.

The Merriest’s arrangements include a gingerly applied march intro and an Afro-Latin rumble in places that fit just right, however unexpected they first may sound. A duet with John Pizzarelli may be a bit mushy for some, but good for it not being another rendering of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Depending on the band she has in tow and her set list on winter tours, Monheit could provide a less flashy, more subdued alternative to Mariah Carey'’s self-declared rule as holiday queen. My Christmas Guitar, Jeff’s November 2014 release, is a contemporary approach to traditional Christmas favorites, with an obvious emphasis on guitar as the featured instrument. Electric and acoustic, finger-style and slide; the guitar playing styles vary, but the BLUES influence is evident?

“My work has been described to me as an interesting mix of styles resembling that of artists like Ry Cooder, David Wilcox, Mark Knopfler, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Gordon Lightfoot, Jeff Beck and others. Well,...I'm truly humbled at the mere thought of any such remote comparisons to these musical giants. Personally I just think I sound like me,... whatever that is,... however, all those personalities have certainly influenced my playing and writing.”

Jeff, originally from the Saskatchewan prairies (where he performed with the popular 70's prairie band EDEN), has been involved with the Canadian west coast music scene (writing, recording and performing live) since 1991, prior to his 24 year involvement with the Canadian prairie music scene.

Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music – but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group.

Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an ‘underground element’. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high ‘cult’ status and instant recognition as a household name.

After a number of successful top-twenty singles in the UK, the band went on to score unprecedented international success with the release of the classic ‘Nightbirds” recording and the title track has now become a standard in the popular music repertoire. This success was repeated with the top-ten hit “Down on the Street and the award-winning video established the band’s personnel of Jill Saward(lead vocs), Bill Sharpe(keys),Keith Winter(gtr), George Anderson(bass) and Roger Odell(drums). With the magic Al Jarreau/Shakatak combination, the group went on to record the track ‘Day by Day’ to further international acclaim.

Along with this successful recording career, Shakatak had firmly established themselves as a vibrant live act, combining astute musicianship with a sense of fun that communicated strongly with world-wide audiences. Their performance in Japan’s Budoken Hall won them a Silver Award at the Tokyo International Song Festival-other awards include the “Best Instrumental Album’ for 6 consecutive years-and other live concerts of note have been the East meets the West Border Concert at the time of German re-unificationin 1989 and the open air concert in Cape Town for the Millennium Celebrations 2000 where they played in front of 250,000 people.

The long run of continuous success was brought to a halt when guitarist Keith Winter became seriously ill and was forced to stop playing. It took Keith a long while to redirect his energies but he is now a very successful website designer and remains very much a part of the Shakatak team by designing and maintaining the website. Eventually the band re-organised and the remaining four members now augment their live shows with Jacqui Hicks (b.vocs, sax&flute) or Debby Bracknell (b.vocs&flute) and Alan Wormald (gtr&b.vocs).

08. Decorate The Night (3:26)
09. This Time Of The Year (2:36)
10. When A Child Is Born (3:45)

Silky smooth: that was Brook Benton's byword from his first record to his very last, as the singer parlayed his rich baritone pipes into seven number one R&B hits and eight Top Ten items. Stints on the gospel circuit preceded Benton's first secular session for Okeh in 1953, but his career didn't begin to take off until he teamed with writer/producer Clyde Otis. Benton co-wrote and sang hundreds of demos for other artists before frequent collaborator Otis signed his friend to Mercury; together they pioneered a lush, violin-studded variation on the standard R&B sound, which beautifully showcased Benton's intimate vocals.

Benton crashed the top spot on the R&B charts in early 1959 with his moving "It's Just a Matter of Time," then rapidly encored with three more R&B chart-toppers: "Thank You Pretty Baby," "So Many Ways," and "Kiddio." Pairing with Mercury labelmate Dinah Washington, their delightful repartee on "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" and "A Rockin' Good Way" paced the R&B lists in 1960.

The early '60s were a prolific period for Benton, but he left Mercury a few years later and bounced between labels before reemerging with the atmospheric Tony Joe White ballad "Rainy Night in Georgia" on Cotillion in 1970. Benton later made a halfhearted attempt to cash in on the disco craze, but his hitmaking reign was at an end long before his death in 1988.

While we may all have ghouls and ghosts on our minds right now thanks to the rapidly approaching Halloween, Blue Rodeo are looking further ahead with their newly announced holiday album A Merrie Christmas to You. The upcoming festival offering will arrive both physically and digitally on Tuesday (November 4) through Warner.

Although the album includes a couple of well-known Christmas tunes — "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" — the rest are a slightly more modern. There are covers of Joni Mitchell, Big Star, Paul Simon, Gordon Lightfoot, the Band and more. There are also two Blue Rodeo originals: Jim Cuddy's brand-new "Home to You This Christmas" and a re-recording of Greg Keelor's "Glad to Be Alive."

The album was recorded in a week at their very own Woodshed Studio in Toronto. Each song was captured live.

"The songs are as much about the season as they are about the actual day," Cuddy said in a statement about the selection of material. "The criteria for choosing material were to find songs that we could actually sing and make our own." ~By Alex Hudson

Keyboardist Joey DeFrancesco will release his first Christmas album, Home for the Holidays, Oct. 28 on JD Music on October 28. The recording, jointly produced by Joey and his wife Gloria DeFrancesco, is a double album featuring traditional Christmas songs such as “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Merry Christmas Baby,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” and “Blue Christmas” plus new, original DeFrancesco compositions: the title track, “Home for the Holidays,” and “Christmas at 3 a.m.”

On various tracks DeFrancesco performs solo, with his trio, quartet and quintet. The core Trio comprises guitarist Jeff Parker, drummer George Fludas and DeFrancesco on Hammond organ, with guest musicians in other configurations including John Webber on bass, Jerry Weldon and George Coleman Sr. on tenor saxophones, and George Coleman Jr. on drums. Two songs recorded in California, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” feature Roman Banda (drums), Jose ‘Papo’ Rodriguez (percussion), Steve Wilkerson (flute) and Tony Banda (bass). DeFrancesco also plays piano and trumpet, and sings on “Blue Christmas” and “Merry Christmas Baby.”
