A Song for My Father is an anthology of songs from the sons and daughters of some of pop music's most legendary artists. They each put a personal touch on a classic song made famous by their fathers, choosing songs that have a particular personal meaning for each of them. The result gives proof that sometimes musical genius runs in the family.

The album was originally released in 2007 by 180 Music, and was an exclusive US release, only available from Target stores. On June 1, 2010, it was re-released for more general availability by 429 Records.

Though many people probably remember him for an appearance in the film The Shining or for his role as Louie in Chico and the Man during the '70s, Scatman Crothers had an extensive jazz and later R&B background. He performed in many clubs and on radio shows in the '20s,'30s, and '40s before making the move to television in 1948. But once he moved to acting, Crothers stayed busy the remainder of his life. He had roles in such series as The Governor and J.J., Kojak, Toma, and One of the Boys. He was also active as a voice for such cartoon series as Hong Kong Phooey and The Harlem Globetrotters. ~by Ron Wynn

A unique trip through contemporary samba-funk, relaxed bossa nova and earthy north-eastern rhythms on a bebop base.

Imagine a sunny terrace in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro‘s vivid bairro, just opposite the famous Sugarloaf Mountain. Here, between the lush green of the mountains and the blue Guanabara bay, melodies and rhythms float naturally through the air. You just have to grab the right moment for inspiration. It was here that the idea of this album was born, almost ten years ago, when guitarist Paulo Morello took advantage of such a moment and dreamed up the first bars of “Afternoon In Rio”. However, at that moment, those fragments – not written down – flew away through the hot breeze of the afternoon.
Morello, a dedicated Brazil aficionado, who was working with bossa nova legends Leny Andrade, Pery Ribeiro, Alaide Costa and Johnny Alf for years, is always keen to explore his predilections with interesting new projects. One day, he was enjoying a glass of beer with his Munich friend and colleague Tizian Jost. The pianist has an equally immense enthusiasm for Brazilian music has enjoyed many musical adventures with Morello, among them playing with Grammy winner Leny Andrade or the German-based carioca, Viviane de Farias. They were discussing the possibility of playing Brazil Jazz in the traditional organ trio setting – a sound that has rarely be heard in that way.

And when the question of a drummer arose, the name of Erivelton Silva immediately came up. Both Paulo and Tizian admired the drummer for his incredibly groovy playing with Rosa Passos. The musician from Rio de Janeiro has worked with many of the greats: Chico Buarque, João Bosco, Milton Nascimento, Roberto Menescal and Paquito D‘Rivera. He developed a virtuoso samba drumming style that is admired by his drum colleagues worldwide. After they managed to track Silva down the project was under way.

When a trio plays Brazilian music, it will always be compared to the great performers, since the history of this music is rich with troikas in those latitudes. Famous leaders on each of the given instruments instantly come to mind: Roberto Menescal (g), Walter Wanderley (org), Milton Banana (dr), just to name a few. Morello, Jost and Silva draw level with these eminent musicians - and add a different flavour to the tropical trio pedigree. No one is fronting here; all three musicians act as equal partners. Also the repertoire – most of it being original compositions by Morello and Jost - is unmatched in its variety, reaching out from Rio to the Northeast of the country and even making forays into fusion jazz. Says Morello: “We play Brazilian music in a unique way, because we do it on a bebop base, and at the same time our compositions are tailor-made for Brazilian rhythms.”

The landscape of those rhythms is breathtaking, comprising earthy samba funk, the heavily accentuated samba-de-breque, bossa nova, of course, chorinho, Rio‘s old-time music, and baião from the north east of Brazil. Listen to the intricate funkiness of “Let‘s Vamos” of which the trio presents two versions, one featuring German vibraphone master Wolfgang Lackerschmid and the other Morello‘s long-time companion, Kim Barth, on flute. Jost demonstrates his deep dedication to the Bahian culture, highlighted in the rustic “Santo Amaro”, in which guitar virtuoso Morello shows his rock influences. Organ wizard Jost – who was initially a church organist, by the way – also easily switches to the Fender Rhodes, delivering an amazing solo in Morello‘s bossa, “Na Hora Da Paixão”. “Rebuliço” has the trio re-inventing the chorinho genre, which romps away at double speed in the final section. And, talking of bossa, with “Você Vai Ver” the group pays an unusual tribute to Tom Jobim: the melody is relocated to the organ in Walter Wanderley style and is graced by fine embellishments from Hendrik Meurkens‘ harmonica. Close friend, bassist Dudu Penz, also dropped in to propel some of the tracks with a crisp earthiness.

“What about the fragments of the terrace song?” you may ask. Well, one day they rose up from oblivion again. While sitting in the afternoon sun with his guitar, Morello had been filmed by a journalist who showed him the document years later. Instantly Morello remembered the line, worked on it - and now the result fiercely stands as an opener in which the virtues of all three musicians are broadly displayed: Morello‘s inventive and virtuosic improvisation, Jost‘s steaming response to it and the compact, semi-quaver- laden precision of Silva. Don‘t be mistaken: a lazy afternoon in Rio might become very hot!

The Center for the Arts of Homer in Homer, New York, was originally the First Baptist Church of Homer. Built in 1893 from locally made bricks, the building exemplifies the Richardson Romanesque style that was popular in that era.

After more than a century of serving parishioners in this tiny town nestled in the rolling hills of Central New York, the church was purchased in 2001 by a small group of caring local individuals who dedicated themselves to a dual mission of enhancing opportunities for appreciation of the arts and preserving this historic Homer landmark.

Since its official opening in 2005, the center has proven to be a remarkable concert venue. With no amplification or reinforcement of any kind, the near-perfect acoustics of the former church sanctuary provide a memorable listening experience that is sonorous yet warm and delicate at the same time.

This unique setting was a perfect place for trombonist John Allred and trumpeter Charlie Bertini to shine. Although these two accomplished artists had previously played together countless times in different ensembles over a period of many years, this performance marked the first time the two of them had paired for a full-length concert together.

Backed by a stellar rhythm section of piano, guitar and acoustic bass, John and Charlie clearly enjoyed the communication and spontaneity of performing live that evening. Fortunately, the fleeting, magical moments they shared were captured by recording engineer Ray Ackerman and can now be enjoyed by all. This performance is truly pure and organic jazz at its finest.

A Paris based singer-songwriter with Australian-Italian origins, for her 15th birthday Aurielle was given the album 'Blue' by Joni Mitchell. Inspired by this she bought herself a guitar and taught herself to play. She began writing songs and playing in coffee houses. During this time Aurielle also attended the Sydney conservatorium of music part time to study Jazz vocals. Between her folk roots and her new love of Jazz the delicate fusion of Aurielles signature sound began to evolve. In 2011, she recorded her first studio album of her own compositions titled 'Send the wandering girl home' .

At age 22, Aurielle moved to Milan where she secured a publishing contract with Sony music. There she began learning to speak and sing in Italian and discovered much about her own Italian families rich musical history. Her father Ettore Sciorilli was a popular singer-songwriter and her grandfather Eros Sciorilli a renowned composer and director or orchestra. " I delved into the history of my grandfather and found he published more than 500 songs performed by some of the best singers in Italy. His song 'non pensare a me' performed by Claudio Villa won the Sanremo festival in 1967. It became clear to me that his music was still relevant today and so I decided to present it to a new audience with new jazz arrangements ."

And so 'Eros Blues' was born, an album of jazz interpretations of her grandfathers compositions.

Recorded in Paris at La Frette studios and featuring arrangements by Grégory Privat and Jerry Leonidé

'Eros Blues' is sure to have a life of its own of which Eros Sciorilli would have been proud.

Nikoletta Szoke was born in Zalaegerszeg (Hungary) in 1983. She was only four years old when her family moved to Budapest and started her studies there. Although she had been born into one of the Hungarian gipsy musical dynasties (her father, Sándor Szoke is a noted cimbalom player), she didn't start learning music until the age of 18. She was accepted at a conservatory and became a student of the noted jazz singer, Gábor Winand in 2002. She started to perform right after her first singing lesson. After three and a half years of studying and performing she entered for the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition held at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in 2005. The competition was open to jazz singers under the age of 30 from all around the world. Nikoletta had been invited and was the winner of the first prize and the public prize, too. Chairing the jury was Barbara Hendricks and Randy Crawford was her deputy. Nikoletta started to take classical singing lessons as well in 2005 as a student of Júlia Bikfalvy, who had coached the soprano diva Andrea Rost to international stardom. In January 2006 she took part at the conference of the International Associaton for Jazz Education (IAJE Conference) in New York, and she performed both at the New York Hilton and Dizzy's Club at the Lincoln Center. In 2006 she won the Lakatos Ablakos Dezso Hungarian state jazz scholarship which is given to three young Hungarian musicians every year. Since the competition she has been pursuing an increasingly successful performing career.

Her debut album, Golden Earrings was released by the Hungarian company, Gramy Records in October 2008. In January 2009 she also signed a contract with the Japanese label, Atelier Sawano, the latter launching in Japan A song for you, Nikoletta's second album on 17th of the same month. After the great success of "A Song for You" in 2010 she signs a five-album deal with Atelier Sawano. The first album of this contract, "My Song" is released in February. Nikoletta and the band launch the album at the Cotton Club, Tokyo simultaneously. In August she is featured as special guest at the Budapest concert of the extraordinary vocalist, tenfold Grammy-winner, Bobby McFerrin, where they perform a duet. In February 2011 her 4th album, "Shape of My Heart" is out in the stores. In 2011 this album becomes a best-seller at the label (http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/fl/rank/101/33/1/). In February 2012 her fifth album, 'Inner Blaze' is released.  http://www.nikolettaszoke.com/nikoletta_eng.php

Lou Donaldson - Lush Life

Lou Donaldson's Lush Life is the sort of mysterious lost session that inexplicably fell through the cracks from time to time at Blue Note Records during their wildly productive 1960s and the sort of collectable that used to make vinyl hawks salivate. This January 1967 session, unreleased until 1980 when it debuted in Japan under a different title (now getting the Rudy Van Gelder Edition treatment), seems to have gone against everything that was happening in jazz (and American culture) at the time. With Coltrane in his final six months of life and Miles about to enter his electric phase, you can understand why Alfred Lion may not have thought the time was right to issue an album as gentle and luxuriously orchestral as this. Even the players gathered in this octet (including Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner) seem to be harking back to styles they left behind several years earlier.

The disc opens with the unapologetically romantic sound of Pepper Adams' baritone, before Donaldson states the melody and then hands it off for a solo from Shorter. Each of the sax players sounds as if he is doing his impression of Ben Webster: Adams on the brawny low end, Donaldson sweetly fluttering on top, Shorter wrapping his arms around the midrange. No groove, blues or boogaloos to be found here. Only Donaldson and his bandmates exploring the pretty side of their instruments, enabled by Duke Pearson's peerless arrangements, with playing that starts lovely and gets lovelier, as the soloists reinforce and build on what's heard before. Perfect as the soundtrack to a romantic evening for two, the disc carries one caveat: this RVG edition offers no bonus tracks, so at its original 35-minute playing time, don't forget to hit the repeat button.
