The body of Crescent City trumpeter Irvin Mayfield's work might be considered "a love letter to New Orleans," and this compilation of his Basin Street Records recordings, assembled to accompany a book with each song constituting a chapter (it is available as a stand-alone CD and in a CD/book package), certainly makes that case. Drawing from such albums as Love Songs, Ballads and Standards (a duo collection with Ellis Marsalis), Half Past Autumn Suite, and Strange Fruit, plus Mayfield's work with the group Los Hombres Calientes, the music ranges from traditional N.O. "Indian" chants and second-line playing to straight-ahead jazz. Mayfield's different projects make for a range of music that is almost too varied. Strange Fruit, for instance, is a concept album about a 1920s lynching, and music from it sits oddly beside, say, the version of Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett's "Superstar" from the Ellis Marsalis album. But it all relates to New Orleans somehow, and the album gives a good sense of Mayfield's recorded accomplishments so far. ~ William Ruhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/album/a-love-letter-to-new-orleans-mw0002122078

Irvin Mayfield - How Passion Falls

Styles: Trumpet Jazz
Year: 2001
File: MP3@320K/s
Time: 62:08
Size: 143,6 MB
Art: Front

( 8:33)  1. The Illusion
( 6:49)  2. Adam & Eve
( 6:46)  3. The Obsession
( 6:18)  4. Othello & Desdemona

( 2:57)  6. Romeo & Juliet
( 4:35)  7. The Affair
( 7:27)  8. David & Bathsheba
(10:11)  9. The Reality

How Passion Falls is Mayfield's second CD on Basin Street Records and it can hold its own with all the mainstream jazz that has been released in recent memory. The album contains ten original compositions (one track is "hidden" at the end) and deals with love and romance (what else, with a title like How Passion Falls). One of the most interesting things about this album is the song sequence. It could be called a jazz-opera because the tracks are ordered in a sort of acts and scenes format. It is a take, if you will, on the boy meets girl theme (with Biblical and Shakespearean overtones). The titles, in order, are: "The Illusion," "Adam & Eve," "The Obsession," "Othello & Desdemona," "The Affair," "The Denial," "Romeo & Juliet," "David & Bathsheba," and "The Reality." While not every love story features the betrayal of "The Affair" and "David & Bathsheba," let's give Mayfield some leeway. This CD does a wonderful job of displaying the talents and musicianship of its players. The interaction of bassist Edwin Livingston, drummer Jaz Sawyer and pianist Richard Johnson together with Mayfield's trumpet is mesmerizing. The interaction of the quartet with percussionist Bill Summers and saxophonist Aaron Fletcher on "Adam & Eve" is Latin-tinged blues-jazz at its finest. Delfeayo Marsalis (who also produced the album) plays on trombone on "The Denial." Other guests include Ellis Marsalis (no, he's not another brother; yes, he's Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo's father) on piano on "Romeo & Juliet," and saxophonist Donald Harrison, who is featured on "David & Bathsheba." The best track is "The Denial" with its call/response musical movement and its funk bass. This track really catches a groove and grabs the listener. The entire album has the feel and mysticism that could only be created in New Orleans by New Orleans musicians. Every selection finds a blues-soaked jazz/funk groove that is driven by African rhythms and Latin undertones. Only in New Orleans could this musical gumbo of styles be meshed into one cohesive broth. The CD also has enhanced CD-ROM capabilities which feature Wynton Marsalis in a video commentary and extensive liner notes. This is one well crafted album and lavishly produced package. It's a winner  through and through.~ Mike Perciaccante https://www.allaboutjazz.com/how-passion-falls-irvin-mayfield-basin-street-records-review-by-mike-perciaccante.php

In celebration of Basin Street Records’ 20th anniversary, label mates and trumpeters Kermit Ruffins and Irvin Mayfield join forces on A Beautiful World. These two mock adversaries, who used to hilariously battle it out musically at local clubs, stand as Basin Street’s most recorded artists and helped put the local label on the national map.  They share composing credits for the albums’ first cut, “Well, Alright,” which, not surprisingly, swings like crazy and is made complete with hand clapping, singing and Ruffins cheerleading “Follow the umbrella!” It’s a big band number filled with saxophone, trombone and trumpet sections. The trumpeters kick things off with tenor saxophonist Ed “Sweetbread” Petersen soon standing up for an inspired solo and Trevarri Huff-Boone blowing some fine bari.  Well, alright, there are some 60, primarily very well-known New Orleans musicians on this album that boasts 26 cuts. Granted, there are several very short, spoken word interludes with several amusingly orated by actor Wendell Pierce. Nonetheless, that leaves room for a lot of music that varies greatly stylistically including the traditional sounds of the Ruffins and Mayfield penned “Just Playin’” that includes trumpeters Wendell Brunious, Leroy Jones, Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown and Andrew Baham. Here, Shannon Powell takes over on drums that are often occupied by Adonis Rose.  There is even a string septet on three numbers, including the title cut, “Beautiful World,” the name of which was an inspired way to pay tribute to trumpeter Louis Armstrong by referencing his hit “What a Wonderful World.” Haley Reinhart, perhaps best recognized as a finalist on American Idol, sings with passion the song written by Mayfield and arranged by trombonist Emily Fredrickson, who also adds some fine tonal accents. Cyril Neville, who is prominent on many of the album’s selections, contributes his voice in harmony.  Neville takes the lead on a highlight of the disc, “Allen Toussaint,” a jaunty number he co-wrote with Ruffins and Mayfield. It embraces all of what might be described as Toussaint-isms the prominent rollicking piano here provided by Ronald Markham, the distinctive horn arrangements, that certain lilting rhythm and humor. After recalling his first time spotting Toussaint, Neville exclaims, “All I can say, when I saw that, is man, when I grow up I wanna be like that!” The song ingeniously heads out quoting the master’s lyrics from “Working in the Coal Mine,” “Workin’, goin’, workin’, goin’…”  Just as Basin Street Records has done for 20 years, A Beautiful World celebrates New Orleans and its rich community of musicians. http://www.offbeat.com/music/kermit-ruffins-irvin-mayfield-beautiful-world-basin-street-records/

Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield released half a dozen albums before he was 25 years old. His youth, as well as his willingness to contribute his time and knowledge in the spheres of both classical and jazz studies, make him a popular figure in educational music clinics in his home state of Louisiana. He frequently participates in free clinics that serve hundreds of school children. In addition, he has presided over master classes and a variety of workshops in classical and jazz studies at the Chandler Jazz Festival, Loyola University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of New Orleans. A Crescent City native, Mayfield attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. He leads his own group, the Irvin Mayfield Sextet, as well as a modern jazz band called Los Hombres Calientes with Bill Summers. His performances have seen him sharing the stage with artists from a variety of genres, including Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Doc Cheatham, Chucho Valdes, Nicholas Payton, Ellis Marsalis, Moses Hogan, Ani DiFranco, and Terence Blanchard. Mayfield and Los Hombres Calientes earned an award from Billboard in 2000 for the group's eponymous debut. The New Orleans Museum of Art commissioned him to compose a jazz suite to accompany its exhibition of works by Gordon Parks. The result, "Half Past Autumn," was first played publicly in the summer of 2000 at the museum. ~ Linda Seida http://www.allmusic.com/artist/irvin-mayfield-mn0000084934/biography

Irvin Mayfield Sextet - Live At The Blue Note

( 7:34)  6. You Don't Know What Love Is
( 8:22)  7. Be Bop

The early 20-something trumpeter Mayfield has his sextet solidly planted in the post-to-hard-bop jazz of the late '50s. Trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson form an impressive young frontline with Mayfield, bassist Carlos Enriquez, and drummer Jaz Sawyer, who get to their business in fine style. It is pianist Eric Reed, however, whose star shines brightly on this blowing club date. Mayfield and Anderson stretch the parameters of their horns prior to Reed cutting loose on the one tune you'd expect this Jazz Messengers-ish type band to blast off on, "Moanin'." Another good old, blowing tune "Cherokee" is done to death, Reed trading fours with Sawyer. The lone duet piece "On the Sunny Side of the Street" has Mayfield and Reed skipping though the classic melody, the pianist in stride mode and also animated as if mocking a player piano's stiffness. The next two pieces are the most stretched-out: "West End Blues," at over 11 and a half minutes, is languid and slow; the 15-minute "Did You Call Her Today?" is an easy, patient, classic JATP-type jam. Mayfield and Marsalis introduce "You Don't Know What Love Is" while the rest join mid-chorus on this pristine ballad. The rip-roaring finale "Be-Bop" does have some fluffed melody notes, but these are hardly noticeable. It's a furious number with Anderson most animated, and Mayfield's tone typifying Dizzy Gillespie's persona during his solo, replete with bleats and high-end charges. Mayfield's future in the pantheon of young trumpeters as Nicholas Payton and Darren Barrett is further secured with the release of this CD. ~ Michael G.Nastos http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-at-the-blue-note-mw0000572074
