"Young German Jazz" enters the next round, and once again it draws attention to the many highly talented and promising young German musicians, that make up a scene that needs to fear no international comparison. The ACT-series "Young German Jazz" not only documents this, it also wishes to support these musicians and help them gain recognition in- and outside the country. The reaction so far has been overwhelming, and rave reviews from abroad prove that young German jazz is perfectly capable of successfully crossing borders. The best example may be the trio [em] grouped around the young shooting star Michael Wollny. The "Süddeutsche Zeitung", among other publications, claims that Wollny is already in the top league of German, maybe even of European Jazz-musicians.

TAPE FIVE co-invented the electro swing genre. But they do not play just one style, TAPE FIVE is a brand - a style in itself! The message is a light, positive vibe! Brought to you with elements of swing, electro swing, jazz, dixie, latin, funk, hip-hop, reggae, dub and tango. Everything combined with a strong retro attitude. You'll hear all the usual suspects in the skilled TAPE FIVE horn section, and singers Dionne Wudu, Henrik Wager, Brenda Boykin, Iain Mackenzie, Yuliet Topaz and Maria Maschenka appearing as “Marlene”. All combined with that special TAPE FIVE production style to serve you something to move to – and something to listen to. Beside some strong and up-tempo TAPE FIVE styled classics, be open for some experiments in sound: a swinging roots reggae against the babylon system, a funny tango with german lyrics, chilled vibes from the Topanga Valley or a message rap about this crazy, Crazy World!

Andrej Hermlin & His Swing Dance Orchestra - Happy Birthday Mr. Swing!

Initially, the first jam sessions were conducted in Andrej’s parents’ garage. Back then the four young musicians playing with Andrej Hermlin could not imagine what would result from their experimental music-making. But one thing they knew for certain: they wanted to play swing, and they wanted it to sound authentic. In their first gig in the spring of 1987 in an establishment then called the “Club of Young Construction Workers”, the group played their entire repertoire – barely more than 15 titles. Several years later the SWING DANCE BAND – with new outfits, and now including a guitarist and female vocal soloist – could be heard playing at larger ball events. Bettina Labeau, at that time married to the bandleader, is still today the vocal soloist of the orchestra. At the end of 1995 the band renamed itself the SWING DANCE ORCHESTRA, now there was a small wind section and arrangements were added to attempt to emulate the sound of the American big bands. On a rather coincidental trip to New York, Andrej Hermlin was rather surprised to experience the new craze for swing in the U.S. In view of the thousands of young swing dancers at “Midsummer Night Swing“ on Lincoln Plaza the Berlin bandleader vowed: “I’ll bring my orchestra to New York no matter what the cost.”

In the summer of 1999 – after months of difficult preparations, everything was finally ready: the band traveled to America. The first gig of the SWING DANCE ORCHESTRA in America took place high above the roofs of Manhattan – in the restaurant of the World Trade Center “Windows of the World“ – a place that no longer exists. Many remarkable things have happened since then: David Rose was signed on as second vocal soloist, the band appeared more often on television, released more albums, was involved in film productions and gave guest performances in Hong Kong, Brussels, Zurich and London. But during all these years, Andrej Hermlin’s foremost goal was to found his own big band. He waited a long time to do it, but since the beginning of 2001 he has been the bandleader of an orchestra with 16 musicians. In the following summer he fulfilled a dream: he returned with his band to the “Big Apple“, played in the “Rainbow Room“, at the legendary “Hotel Pennsylvania“ – and at the “Midsummer Night Swing“ at Lincoln Plaza…

In 2004 the orchestra traveled to the Glenn Miller Festival in Clarinda, Iowa, Glenn Miller’s native city. The SWING DANCE ORCHESTRA has played gigs in the most prestigious concert halls in Germany and elsewhere. Under the Sony/BMG label the orchestra has released the albums : “Live in New York“ and “Benny Goodman´s Carnegie Hall Concert 1938“ – evidence of an amazing development which began so modestly many years ago. All of the old pals who played back then in the garage are still playing together today as musicians in the SWING DANCE ORCHESTRA. The story of this extraordinary band has not yet come to an end, so keep posted to find out what will happen next.

Happy Birthday Mr. Swing!

The wonderful thing about jazz is how over the years it has come to transcend borders both real and virtual. While some like to think of it as an American tradition, and without question it had its start on this side of the pond, the truth is there are no longer any boundaries. Musicians from as far afield as Slovenia and Tunisia practice the form in a reverentially American way, while artists in North America fuse their tradition with music from abroad. It no longer matters anymore where you are from, and that's a good thing. German pianist Martin Sasse and his trio, featuring bassist Henning Gailing and drummer Hendrik Smock, have been recording with Nagel Heyer since '01, and each album not only gets better, it demonstrates that you don't have to be an American to swing with the truth. Following up last year's Groovy Affair, where, as strong as the trio was, guest guitarist Peter Bernstein nearly stole the show, Sasse and the trio offer up Close Encounter , featuring guest Vincent Herring on alto saxophone and flute. If one didn't have the album booklet to look at, one would think this is Herring's record, which says a lot about Sasse's lack of ego and desire to get to the essence of the music.

That's not to say Sasse and the trio don't turn in fine performances they do it's just that Herring's contribution to this mostly original set of material is so significant that it's hard to imagine the group without him. Once again the emphasis is on straight-ahead post bop, with tunes like Herring's "Don't Let It Go" swinging in a relaxed, medium tempo kind of way. Herring is clearly descended from Cannonball Adderley's style of playing, with an exuberant approach that is intelligent without being intellectual. Sasse's "Blue Herring" is a modal workout that gives Sasse a chance to show his roots in McCoy Tyner by way of Kenny Kirkland. Smock and Gailing are the perfect rhythm section as they propel both Sasse and Vincent to greater heights while remaining remarkably unobtrusive. Smock's "Nelson's Dilemma" is an ode to pop star "Prince" Rogers Nelson, rather surprisingly as there's nothing in it that brings Prince's music to mind. According to Smock, the dilemma is that of "trying to hold the balance between 'Art for art's sake' and 'Money for heaven's sake.'" There's no dilemma here, though, as Sasse turns in another strong solo that builds from a straightforward linear approach to more intense block chording. From the up-tempo bebop of Herring's "Folklore" to the tender "I Will Sing You a Lullaby," a tender minor ballad that features Herring's lyrical flute work, Close Encounter is an unassuming record that shows the American tradition alive and living comfortably far beyond its original borders. With groups like this, it becomes clear that boundaries are now nothing more than artifice, and that's a sentiment that would do well to be adopted in broader terms. ~ John Kekman https://www.allaboutjazz.com/close-encounter-martin-sasse-nagel-heyer-records-review-by-john-kelman.php

The singer/songwriter and guitarist Christina Lux is a phenomenon. Since the mid-eighties she has become one of Germany's most wanted backup singers . She has been touring with the Jule Neigel Band back in 1989 and more recently, as a special guest, supportet Fury in the slaughterhouse on their 1998 tour. Renowned artists such as Grace Jones, Oleta Adams, Gabrielle and Nina Hagen had her sing backing vocals on prime-time TV shows. She sang on studio albums for Mick Karn of Japan fame and Deep Purple's Jon Lord. Even on dance records such as RMB's Mission Horizon (2001) her unique voice can be heardBut Christina Lux also has a career of her own. Since releasing her first two solo albums "She is Me" (1998) and "Little Luxuries" (1999) she has performed countless club concerts all around the country. Some of these were as a soloist, others as a member of her own trio including bass-player Marius Goldhammer ( Marla Glen..) and her one-man-percussion-orchestra Roland Peil (Die Phantastischen 4..). She has opened shows for Paul Young in 1999 and for New York's Tuck+Patti in 2001. Music magazine "Gitarre & Bass" (7/2001) says, " What sets her apart from others is her warm and deeply touching voice, supported by her finely tuned feeling for spontaneity and free-flowing improvisation combined with her jazzy, grooving rhythm guitar...truly great!"While the music industry sometimes fails to recognize the gold in their own backyard, Christina Lux is regarded as a brilliant musician's musician by critics both at home and in other countries. Perhaps this is because of the wide range of her repertoire: songs that are written in authentic American English, sung with her dark magic velvety voice, blending acoustic soul and funky folk with jazzy improvised highlights. According to the music magazine Soundcheck, she holds her own in a comparison with Rickie Lee Jones or Shawn Calvin.Christina Lux is a truly exceptional live artist. Her latest offering Pure Love, gives the best feel yet for the spontaneity of her live performances. Since, with the exception of two tracks, it was recorded in live situations, we're able to experience the pure magic of one of her concerts...pure pleasure! ~ Editorial Reviews https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Love-Christina-Lux/dp/B00005T7OQ

Not especially active in recording vocalists, German label Nagel Heyer has made a fortuitous exception by hosting vocalist Lyambiko's first album. Definitely out of the cool school, this young German performer sings this play list of mostly standards in slightly accented English which helps to make her delivery even more engaging. Possessing an especially soothing tone, good phrasing instincts, a slight vibrato used judiciously, she shows her obvious like of and respect for classics written by Duke Ellington, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Frank Loesser and Jimmy McHugh, among others. Peppered through are such strictly jazz tunes as John Coltrane's "Afro Blue" and a blues tune or two including a groovy "Miss Celie's Blues". One of the jazz tunes, Nat Adderley's "Work Song", gets A Capella treatment by the singer which showcases the purity and range of her awesome set of vocal chords and she ends this tune by reaching to the heavens with an astonishing high note which she seems to hold onto forever. Quite breathtaking. Lyambiko gets staunch support by an international flavored trio of American Marque Lowenthal on piano, Canadian bassist Robin Draganic and drummer/percussionist Torsten Zwingenberger from Hamburg. This album offers more than 70 minutes of choice vocal jazz combined with excellent jazz instrumental artists and is highly recommended. ~ Dave Natrhan https://www.allaboutjazz.com/out-of-this-mood-lyambiko-review-by-dave-nathan.php

This date, rather brief at under 28 minutes, originally appeared as a 10" LP in the U.S., although it was recorded in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. It features Jutta Hipp leading an all-German quintet through a session consisting mostly of American standards, including "Variations," an enjoyable group improvisation based on the chord changes to "Tea for Two." Alto saxophonist Emil Mangelsdorff has a soft, dry tone comparable to Paul Desmond, most noticeable in "Ghost of a Chance." Tenor saxophonist Jaki Freund's "Cleopatra"'s sound could easily be mistaken for West Coast jazz. Hipp is joined by the rhythm section only for the intriguing fugue-like treatment of "What's New" and a brisk run through "Don't Worry 'Bout Me." She also wrote "Mon Petit," which has superb interplay between the two saxophonists.

This reissue is labeled as part of the RVG series, though legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder's name is never specifically listed in English anywhere in the packaging, he evidently did the remastering. Long out of print on LP and an unlikely reissue candidate for Blue Note due to its brevity and obscurity, this session was briefly available as a CD reissue through the Japanese label Toshiba-EMI, but was soon deleted. The Spanish Fresh Sounds imprint picked it up and re-released it as part of its New Faces series. ~ Ken Dryden https://www.allmusic.com/album/jutta-hipp-quintett-new-faces-new-sounds-from-germany-mw0000372886

With his second album „Mother and Brother“, Bochum-born singer Jeff Cascaro makes his reputation as one of Germany’s major voices in soul music with a pop attitude permanent. His first album „Soul of a Singer“ (2006) created this very special mood blending catchy songs made from pop, soul, jazz and blues elements. The new album immerges into that refreshingly different, individual, and outrageously entertaining cocktail. Jeff Cascaro the voice… and the mood. Mother and Brother is also close to the singer’s soul. It tells us the story of his love for music, for life itself (‚Ella‘ or ‚I Feel Fine‘), it opens chapters of his path of life, his loves and suffering (‚When She Sings To Me‘ or ‚The Sun Is Shining For Our Love‘), or they discreetly ask for a dance (‚Love Is In The Air‘). Cascaro follows the ways classic soul singers like Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, and Wilson Pickett were travelling before. But Cascaro knows that each traditions need fresh interpretations: „Of course I follow a thread, but in none of the pieces you’ll find a second verse that sounds like the first. There are always slightly different notes, a different melody.“ http://jeffcascaro.de/albums/mother-and-brother/

Within no time, THE SAZERAC SWINGERS from Germany have established themselves as one of the leading European bands who play contemporary modern New Orleans Jazz the way it is really played in its birthplace today. Named after the City of New Orleans’ official drink, the Sazerac, established in 1804, the band just turns every show into an unforgettable party.

In 2013, THE SAZERAC SWINGERS released their debut album “Three Guys Named Louis” on Schubert Records. Overwhelming reviews in several European music magazines proved that it was worthwhile producing an album that only featured songs that had been popularized by the three great Louis’; that’s Armstrong, Jordan, and Prima.

In January 2015, THE SAZERAC SWINGERS, released their second album, entitled “It’s Never too Late for a Happy Childhood.” The album contains a number of original compositions, some of them co-written and co-performed by Fredy Omar, the “Latin King of New Orleans,” who also contributed a new version of his signature song “La Vampirita,” from the HBO series “Treme.” There are further outstanding guest appearances by African trumpet giant Terrence Ngassa, Austrian Swing pianist Frank Johnny Schütten, New Orleans multi-instrumentalist Ralph Gipson, and violin virtuoso Resul Barini.

In the last two years, the “Sazeracs” have toured Western Europe and the USA. They supported Dutch saxophone queen Candy Dulfer, and regularly perform with African star trumpeter Terrence Ngassa and New Orleans legend Kermit Ruffins. Headlining renowned German Jazz festivals such as Jazzfest Gronau, “VS Swingt,” and the “Hamburg Jazztrain,” they joined the company of artists like Ron Carter, Till Brönner, and Avishai Cohen on the billboards. In October of 2014 and November 2015, THE SAZERAC SWINGERS played two extended European tours featuring New Orleans rising star and two-time Grammy Award nominee Glen David Andrews on vocals and trombone.

Sheila Jordan, Stephan Kramer and Chris Lachotta - how can I rewrite this connection? An attempt: the gentle and exhilarating jazz sounds & Latin grooves take the listener into their own magical world of formation. You feel almost as close to the musicians as if you listened to their music in a small New York jazz club and would end the evening in style with a glass of wine.

Sheila Jordan brings along a tremendous scatvocabulary with a rare depth of interpretation, her serene life experience carries the whole thing: fearlessly and casually she creates intricate phrasing and rhythmic specials that one might think were nursery rhymes. Always with you: heart and soul. Every word, every phrase seems to have meaning, is filled with lived life.

Stephan Kramer accompanies to the point, sensitively captures every mood, every note of the singer and complements it with his own jazz language. You could almost be jealous as a singer ... Whether fast, sweeping chord changes or thoughtful Flageolet sounds, this music is still unique. It's nice to hear the change of hands, to experience the handmade music in his guitar playing.

Last but not least there is Chris Lachotta on the bass, who gives the whole a primed frame, sometimes soft and dreamy with the use of the bow, sometimes plucked and striding forcefully. Also one or the other bass solo can be heard. ~Online translation

Thank You Sheila!

"These are rough times when jazz musicians feel they need to position themselves politically. The Berlin singer Esther Kaiser has just released an entire album with "Songs of Courage" (GLM / Soulfood). Flawless and excitingly new-sounding interpretations of Brecht's ("The Little Wireless") to John Farnham's ("You're the voice", not only the jazz community might be dumbfounded as a political song) have taken them from classics like "Where have all the flowers gone "to modern alienation songs like" This is not America "by David Bowie and Pat Metheny is all there, even a" Song of Resignation "- the more defiant" revolution "of the Beatles, which later angered John Lennon against his original meaning interpreted - luckily it made it to the record. Not only is Kaiser a singer who can give any song an individual touch thanks to her calm, but spectacularly shimmering voice, she also has a song-loving band at her side, from which one should at least mention the outstanding bassist Marc Muellbauer. He always keeps the fragile and transparent music of the sextet's extended sextet, which fled to Germany, to the ground. “Singer Lisa Bassenge entered the jazz scene at the beginning of the 2000s and yet made it unmistakably clear that the jazz concept is too narrow for her. The Berlin artist placed herself as a pop song interpreter, Hildegard Knef adept and Club Icon with the project Micatone. In passing, she occupied a new, exciting musical field and let jazz turn somersaults with new ideas. And she did all this with her very own interpretative strength, which was to become her trademark. Their subsequent albums in German even made it into the pop charts. The media was upside down.  Now there is no peace, but after a trip to producer legend Larry Klein, Lisa Bassenge has now created a new musical environment for herself. Her international trio, consisting of Swedish pianist Jacob Karlzon and Danish bassist Andreas Lang, dig deep into the world of songs. With classics like'Still crazy after all these years', 'Norwegian Wood', soul tunes like 'I feel like breaking up somebody's home', Waren Zevon's 'Keep me in your heart' or the bluesy 'Ramblin' man' the new repertoire is well presented.” https://www.propermusic.com/product-details/Borrowed-and-Blue-259931

On this musical journey to the Jazz, Swing and Bossa Nova roots of this formation, you'll be greeted by well-known classics from the American songbook's upbeat arrangements of contemporary hits such as "Livin'On A Prayer" by Jon Bon Jovi, "Black Hole Sun" by Chris Cornell and Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass". Of course, ballads must not be missing. Steffi Denk interprets Gregory Porter's "Water Under Bridges", Joe Sample's "When Your Life Was Low" and Cole Porter's "I've Got Under My Skin" (here as Bossa Nova) heartbreaking! Another musical surprise is the bonus track "For You, For Me, For Evermore", which was recorded live in August 2017 at the Palazzo Festival in the Thon-Dittmer-Palais in Regensburg. In the style of jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald, Steffi Denk interpreted this George Gershwin classic extremely sensitively. She and her Flexible Friends were accompanied by jazz guitar, string pad and the "Flexible Friends" string quartet.

Seventeen musicians- one sound. And a very convincing sound, at that. The SWR Big Band has so far been nominated four times for a Grammy. Also it received in 2015 a Jazz Award in Gold from the German music industry. They also enjoyed a great honor in 2011, when they were the first German band ever suggested for the “Premio da Musica Brasileira,” Brazil’s most important music award. In the face of so much fame, it seems almost modest to say that the SWR Big Band is one of the best big bands in the world. Jazz, fusion or world music, the repertoire is large. As is the list of recent guests and collaborators. On this release, the ensemble presents a live recording of a compilation of big band standards, recorded at the famous Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.

There was a time when doing something experimental in tango could not only result in bad reviews from music critics who didn't understand what you were doing it could also result in bodily harm. The late Astor Piazzolla, often hailed as the Charlie Parker of tango, was literally beaten up in the streets of Buenos Aires by opponents who disliked his vision of tango (which was a major departure from the old-school tango of Carlos Gardel, Carlos Di Sarli, Aníbal Troilo and Hugo del Carril). But these days, Piazzolla-minded tango is very much the norm and tango enthusiasts are unlikely to resort to fisticuffs even if an artist does something expansive that they don't comprehend. The word "expansive" easily applies to Quadro Nuevo, a European tango-oriented quartet that takes a lot of chances on their 2006 recording Tango Bitter Sweet. This 69-minute CD has a strong Piazzolla influence, which is hardly unusual in the 21st century; the tiny, insignificant minority of people who still consider Piazzolla a musical heretic are like the tiny, insignificant minority of people who still believe that Dixieland is the only legitimate form of jazz. What makes Tango Bitter Sweet unusual is the way Quadro Nuevo combines that Piazzolla influence with so many non-tango influences; during the course of the album, elements of Piazzolla are blended with everything from Brazilian samba to French chanson to Italian and Mediterranean folk to jazz. One of the selections, in fact, is an intriguing arrangement of Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur"and there are plenty of other songs on this disc that originated outside of tango but receive a tango makeover, including Michel Legrand's "The Windmills of Your Mind" and Rezso Seress' "Gloomy Sunday" (a Hungarian gem that found its way to jazz after receiving English lyrics and being recorded by Artie Shaw and Billie Holiday in the early '40s). But Tango Bitter Sweet, for all its risk-taking, is ultimately a very charming and accessible album. The solos are quite lyrical, and Tango Bitter Sweet is happily recommended to anyone who is seeking something fresh from tango. ~ Alex Henderson https://www.allmusic.com/album/tango-bitter-sweet-mw0000559509

Chuck Leavell, keyboardist and musical director for the Rolling Stones, has released a new album, “Chuck Gets Big“. “In 2011, I had the pleasure of doing a concert with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, a 17-piece brass orchestra of some of the finest musicians in Germany. Three talented arrangers created charts for some twelve songs I had chosen from my works with the Allman Brothers Band; Sea Level and the Rolling Stones, as well as my own compositions. “Chuck Gets Big” is the result of this experience, and is my latest release on BMG records.”

Backed by the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, Chuck takes us on a musical journey through his 40+ year career as one of rock’s top keyboard players. He covers his lifelong idol Ray Charles with “Losing Hand” and “Georgia on My Mind”. Chuck also reaches back into his beginnings with the Allman Brothers Band playing “Southbound” and “Statesboro Blues” and then moves on to his jazz/rock fusion band “Sea Level” with “King Grand” and “Living in a Dream”. Of course Chuck couldn’t leave Mick, Keith, Ron, and Charlie behind and includes Rolling Stones’ rockers ‘Tumbling Dice” and “Honky Tonk Woman”. He rounds out the album with a few originals of his own and throws in two rhythm and blues classics “Route 66” and “Compared to What”. There aren’t many artists who can perform rock, rhythm, and blues backed by a big band and retain the song’s spirit. But true to Chuck’s rock legacy he does exactly that. This is not a big band album. It’s a rock, rhythm, and blues album. Keep rockin!

Philip Catherine - the South German Newspaper in Munich just recently wrote that he “plays things that cannot be heard by any other guitarist in the world today”. His partner on the bass, Martin Wind, is one of only a few Germans who made it in New York. Both are aesthetes that love melodic jazz with Swing roots. Without any haste or superficial virtuosity, but instead with complete mutual trust they find the ideal tone, the right timbre for each note, lining up sound and space perfectly. A meeting of generations marked by harmony and respect.

The Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine is a European jazz legend. The now 71-year-old Catherine started playing professionally when he was only 17 and toured with artists such as Lou Bennett, Dexter Gordon, Jean-Luc Ponty, Chet Baker (with whom he recorded 6 albums), Tom Harrell and many others. In 1978 he received the “Artist of the year” award by the German Phono-Academy, and Charles Mingus gave him the nickname “Young Django”. This is also a result of his impeccable time feel, which allows him to sound relaxed and loose even while playing the most breathtaking up-tempo passages. But it is not mainly his technique and dexterity that sets him apart; furthermore what made him so unique is his acoustic guitar sound, as well as an improvisational style, which is based not on other guitarists, but on some of the great horn players in jazz.
