Kirk Lightsey - Everything Is Changed

Styles: Piano Jazz
Year: 1986
File: MP3@320K/s
Time: 67:19
Size: 154,3 MB
Art: Front

(11:24)  5. Nandi
( 7:25)  6. Alone Together
(11:02)  7. Lament
( 5:21)  8. Blues on the Corner

This excellent album finds pianist Kirk Lightsey exploring five standards and his bassist Santi Wilson Debriano's "Nandi" with a solid quartet. Drummer Eddie Gladden is an asset but trumpeter Jerry Gonzales (whose muted statements on four of the six selections recall the lyricism of Miles Davis) often comes close to stealing the show. Lightsey, who sounds particularly strong on the ballads, is the obvious leader and his tasteful yet swinging piano is a joy to hear.

Personnel: Kirk Lightsey (piano), Jerry Gonzalez (trumpet, flugelhorn, congas), Santi Debriano (acoustic bass), Eddie Gladden (drums), Chico Freeman, Don Moye (percussion on "Evidence").

Chico Freeman's 2004 Arabesque release Out of Many Comes the One brings a bit of chillout jazz and sophisticated funk into the mix along with pretty vocals by Jennifer Hamady, who works up fine ruminations during "Tzivaeri" and "Miss You Like Smoking." The combination of relaxed grooves and elegant vocalizing has plenty in common with the efforts of Detroiters Wendell Harrison and Donald Byrd.

A seasoned instrumentalist whose artistry is rooted in decades of creative endeavor, Freeman sounds at his best during "Filaraki" and "Part of Me," which feel like salutations from and for Yusef Lateef. ~ arwulf arwulf https://www.allmusic.com/album/out-of-many-comes-the-one-mw0001461211

An excellent tenor saxophonist and the son of Von Freeman, Chico Freeman has had a busy and diverse career, with many recordings ranging from advanced hard bop to nearly free avant-garde jazz. He originally played trumpet, not taking up the tenor until he was a junior in college. Freeman graduated from Northwestern University in 1972, played with R&B groups, and joined the AACM. In 1977, he moved to New York, where he worked with Elvin Jones, Sun Ra, Sam Rivers' big band, Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, and Don Pullen, in addition to leading his own groups. He recorded a dozen albums as a leader during 1975-1982. Starting in 1984, Freeman has played on a part-time basis with the Leaders, he has recorded on a few occasions with his father and in 1989, he put together an electric band called Brainstorm. Chico Freeman has recorded through the years as a leader for Dharma, India Navigation, Contemporary, Black Saint, Elektra/Musician, Black Hawk, Palo Alto, Jazz House, and In & Out. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/artist/chico-freeman-mn0000110829/biography

(8:52)  8. Close to You Alone
(7:36)  9. Carnival
(4:21) 10. Don't Get Around Much Anymore

This set was a change-of-pace for Chico Freeman for it features the usually adventurous tenor (who doubles on soprano) mostly playing warm versions of standards.

The CD reissue adds four previously unissued selections (including a pair of Coltrane tunes, "Lonnie's Lament" and "Wise One") to the original program. With pianist John Hicks, bassist Cecil McBee and either Billy Hart or Don Moye on drums offering fine support (vibraphonist Jay Hoggard sits in on "Carnival"), Freeman pushes at but does not break the boundaries of hard bop. Highlights include "Autumn in New York" (a duet with McBee), Horace Silver's "Peace," "It Never Entered My Mind" and the bassist's "Close to You Alone." ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/spirit-sensitive-mw0000204353

An interesting if quite diverse set, this album is best remembered for featuring up-and-coming singer Bobby McFerrin on a few selections. McFerrin has his moments, as does tenor saxophonist Chico Freeman and such notable sidemen as altoist Steve Coleman, John Purcell on reeds, either Kenny Werner or Mark Thompson on piano, Freeman's longtime bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Billy Hart, among others.

The material (by Freeman, Thompson and Werner) is actually not that significant, and the date on a whole is less memorable than many of Chico Freeman's earlier sets, but it has its enjoyable spots. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/tangents-mw0000800513

A collection of some of the best numbers played by Brainstorm when the band made its highly successful debut at London's Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in 1990. One of the most innovative and engaged small groups in contemporary improvised music, Brainstorm here presents 74 electrifying minutes of inspired and wideranging music and abundantly reaffirms the notion that jazz is the sound of surprise. As Ed Hazel has observed, "Chico Freeman's style combines the energy and wide leaps of John Coltrane's later work with a classic conception of form and a strong sense of swing." https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sweet-Explosion-Chico-Freeman/dp/B000005YLF

The idea for this project is to pay tribute to one of the world’s greatest drummers, Elvin Ray Jones. All of the songs on this recording were compositions that Elvin Jones actually played on, wrote and/or were written for him by some of the most influential musicians of our time. Additionally, all of the musicians playing on this CD have either played with and/or recorded with Mr. Jones.

My personal relationship with Elvin also plays an important role here as well. It was my years with his band “The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine”, the fact that my first record date as a leader was given to me by Elvin and my first tours of Europe and the USA were with him. I had the great fortune of playing some of the most well known and historical jazz clubs in the world with him, The Keystone Korner in San Francisco, The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, The Village Vanguard in New York, The Jazz Workshop in Boston and Ronnie Scott’s in London to name a few. Not to mention the fact that I was having the opportunity to play with the drummer of the historical “John Coltrane Quartet”, a dream of quantum proportions and a great blessing received.

When Elvin passed away a great gap was left for us to ponder. He is and will always be missed. Every musician, let alone every drummer, owes him a great debt. I will ever be grateful for my time spent touring and recording with him, a great master and a beautiful, warm and giving person.

Jive Music Austria is honored to present the third album in a row of the great Chico Freeman! He’s a legend, but is at the same time not laying back and resting on the laurels of his history. Far from it: He’s always on the move, making new projects with new and interesting musicians and with the newest recording tools and technics as well! For this CD he brought some of the finest musicians together that work and live in Europe; with them he can also tour Europe more easily, without so much time lost on long overseas flights. These guys each are splendid on their instruments and well known with their groups and projects, together they are tight and sound as a unit with Mr. Freeman as the crown jewel on this royal swingin’ and groovin’ group! The repertoire is mainly original pieces of Chico’s and some of the other members of the quartet. The cd is completed with some special versions of great and special standards like “Seven Steps to Heaven” and “Soft Pedal Blues”. The Bandleader is also very proud to present an anthology of songs, each dedicated to, and inspired by his daughters: Erika, Luani, N’tiana, Nia and Lara! These songs are very special and with the others that are composed and played with warm-hearted sensitivity you feel the positive, expressive power of this unique artist! https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/chicofreeman3

The two tenors Chico Freeman and father Von Freeman had an opportunity to team up on this CD. Recorded live in concert, the Freemans are assisted by pianist Kenny Barron (Muhal Richard Abrams takes his place on "Paying New York Dues"), bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Von actually sounds the more modern of the two (due to his unusual tone) on a set mostly comprised of standards, plus McBee's "Undercurrents" and the lengthy jamming blues "Jug Ain't Gone," a tribute to Gene Ammons. The straight-ahead but sometimes eccentric music has its surprising moments, and the Freemans mostly battle to a tie. ~Scott Yanow

"All In The Family" brings together two members of Chicago's Freeman family that have never been recorded together until now: legendary guitarist George Freeman (who celebrated his 88th birthday on April 10th, 2015) and world-renowned saxophonist Chico Freeman (George's nephew and Von Freeman's son.) The musical legacy of Chicago's Freeman Family continues on with "All in the Family." Certainly, the late, great leader of the family, tenor saxophonist Von Freeman is smiling somewhere today!

All of the tracks are original songs (with the exception of the haunting "Angel Eyes") and feature compositions from George Freeman "My Scenery" & "Vonski"; and from Chico Freeman "Latina Bonita" & "Essence of Silence"; along with several short Improvisations, that provide a compelling flow to the recording. "Five Days in May" features percussionist Reto Weber on the 'hang' - a track that should have everyone up and dancing with joy!

A lifetime of music, from playing with Charlie Parker to Gene Ammons and his many fine recordings, George Freeman was recently selected as Chicagoan of the Year in Jazz by Tribune Arts Critic Howard Reich! Chico Freeman's career has taken him from his early years with Chicago's AACM to Earth, Wind and Fire to performing and recording with legendary musicians in New York, including Elvin Jones, to today's International Jazz Festivals.

Musicians featured on the recording are: Kirk Brown, piano; Harrison Bankhead, bass; Hamid Drake, drums; Mike Allemana, guitar; Joe Jenkins, drums; and special guest Reto Weber, hang and percussion.

Recorded in September of 2014 at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio, Chicago. Produced by Joanie Pallatto & Bradley Parker-Sparrow. Recording Engineer is Todd A. Carter. Mastered by Joanie & Sparrow. Liner Notes by Neil Tesser. Graphic Design by Al Brandtner.
