Demis Roussos - Collected (3-Disc Set)

Demis Roussos was born on June 15, 1946 in Alexandria, Egypt as Artemios Ventouris Roussos. He was raised in Egypt until his parents moved to Greece in the early 1960s after losing their possessions during the Suez Crisis.

He was best known for his solo hits in the 1970s and 80s, including Forever and Ever, Goodbye and Quand je t'aime. He was also a member of progressive rock group Aphrodite's Child. He was caught up in a plane hijacking when flight TWA 847 from Athens to Rome was hijacked by members of Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad in 1985. He and his third wife were held at gunpoint for five days before they were released. Some of his fellow passengers endured 17 days in captivity. For Demis the only way to get over this rather traumatic experience was to make music again. For that reason he went to Holland and recorded the single “Island Of Love”, which can be considered a comeback, in the spring of 1986. In 2010, Demis Roussos is back in Greece where he realizes one of his oldest dreams by performing at the antic theatre “Erodion”, a memorable concert for his country. He had not sang there since 1974 and the emotion between Demis and the Greek crowd is in its height.

His tour in South Africa in 2012 was memorable for all South Africans, as much as it was for Demis Roussos who realized how much people had not forgotten him there, since his latest appearance there during the Apartheid, in 1977.

Greek pianist Spyros Manesis composes new music, arranges old jazz standards and plays the piano together with Portuguese double bassist João Hasselberg and Latvian drummer Kaspars Kurdeko, who embrace Spyros's musical ideas with deep musicality and remarkable dedication.

The understanding and the unique chemistry among the three musicians have helped the trio develop a distinguished sound characterized by lyricism, a wide range of dynamics and textures, a high level of musical interplay and a real improvisation spirit, which are elements that make their live performances unique musical experiences. Globally speaking, Nana Mouskouri is the biggest-selling female artist of all time. Her fluency in multiple languages -- Greek, French, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese -- enabled her to reach audiences all over Europe, the Americas, and even Asia. Possessed of a distinctive, angelic soprano -- the product of having been born with only one vocal cord -- Mouskouri was sometimes described as Europe's answer to Barbra Streisand. Her repertoire was varied enough to support the universal appeal she aimed for: jazz standards, well-known pop tunes from before and after the rock era, French cabaret chansons, movie songs, classical and operatic repertory, religious music, folk songs from her native Greece and elsewhere, and more. Television ads for Mouskouri collections (a major North American marketing tool) leave the impression that her chief strength was interpreting familiar songs in that lovely voice; however, her early fame in Europe was built largely on songs written for and associated with her, most notably her first hit, "The White Rose of Athens." She was particularly successful in her eventual adopted home of France, where her trademark large black glasses were viewed as highly unorthodox visual style. Mouskouri recorded steadily from the 1960s into the new millennium, tailoring specific releases to specific international markets with tremendous success. ~Steve Huey
