Who can pass Rhoda Scott? But what's the matter with? The one that was very (too much for some) media we didn’t use the term on television in the '60s and '70s, the one that accompanied the Choeurs de France playing Gospel, the iconic leader of the Lady Quartet and the Ladies All Stars who have been filming for 20 years, the organist with bare feet and the absolute toe to the inimitable sound, or It is in this last formation that we find him here in a very recent recording of 7 May 2024 at the Orangerie d’Eaubonne. With her faithful stagemate, drummer Thomas Derouineau and the elegant guitarist Nicolas Peslier. A reduced training that highlights this great lady of jazz so pleasant and simple when you have the chance to meet her.https://lagazettebleuedactionjazz.fr/rhoda-scott-et-le-lady-quartet/

So this is Rhoda's nectar and the Hammond organ, so this sound so taking and enveloping, these deep bass, this energy alternating with softness. You have to see Rhoda in concert to measure the fusion with her instrument, how sometimes she shakes him or after the caress, a visual show as well.

Rhoda chose a repertoire of standards that she had never recorded before. The contrasting dialogues of the organ with Nicolas Peslier's guitar arbitrated by Thomas Derouineau's subtly drumming are sublime clear and make us rediscover certain standards that are still not worn and here regenerated. A weak concern me for "This Masquerade" with the cheerful energy contained and for "Impressions" by John Coltrane in a tonic version. Beautiful trio really. Pure jazz to put in all ears, a gift to the Audience of Aug., and I hope will be shared with many others. In 1967, following in the footsteps of Tadd Dameron and Quincy Jones, Rhoda Scott arrives in France to take classes with Nadia Boulanger. Barely a year later, she recorded her debut album Barclay, Take a Ladder duet with one of the best drummers of the moment, Daniel Humair. A long series of albums will follow, two of which are particularly distinguished by the presence of first-rate accompanists: Mach II (1971) in which his long-time accomplice, American saxophonist / flutist Joe Thomas and especially Rhoda Scott in New York, participate. (1976), the result of the collaboration between the virtuoso organist and the great orchestra of Thad Jones / Mel Lewis. Rhoda Scott (b. July 3, 1938, Dorothy, New Jersey) is an African-American hard bop and soul jazz organist.

The daughter of an AME minister, Scott spent much of her childhood in New Jersey, where she learned to play organ in the churches where her father served. Soon she herself was serving frequently as organist for youth and gospel choirs at her father's and other churches. Scott later studied classical piano, but she concentrated on the organ, eventually earning a Masters' degree in music theory from the Manhattan School of Music.

By this time she had been asked by a choir member to fill in with a small band as a jazz pianist. Enjoying the music, she agreed to stay on with the band on condition that she be allowed to play organ instead of piano. Choosing as her instrument the Hammond organ, she soon became a preeminent jazz musician and is considered by many to be the top female jazz organist.

Scott was first attracted to the organ in her father’s church at age seven. "It's really the most beautiful instrument in the world," she stated in a recent interview. "The first thing I did was take my shoes off and work the pedals." From then on she always played her church organ in her bare feet, and to this date she has continued the practice, earning her nicknames such as "The Barefoot Lady" and "The Barefoot Contessa".

In 1967 Scott moved to France, where she has since spent most of her career and earned recognition far greater than that accorded to her in the United States, though she often performs in the latter country as well.

She has many famous standards in her repertoire, like In the Mood, Theme from New York, New York, Summertime, Mack the Knife, Take Five, Hit the Road Jack, Greensleeves, Tico-Tico no Fubá, Let it Snow, and Delilah. In May 2011 in a context of Versailles Jazz Festival she gave a significant performance together with a classical organist Francis Vidil, combining sonic palettes of classical organs with jazz and Hammond organs.

Rhoda Scott, born in 1938 in Dorothy, New Jersey, U.S.A., is the daughter of an itinerant minister, and she grew up in the tradition of small African-American churches. It is while accompanying the Gospels and Negro Spirituals at the age of 8, that her exceptional musical talent was revealed. Although self-taught, she was determined to perfect her musical education, and after attending Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, she entered Manhattan School of Music in New York, where she was awarded the Borden Prize for the highest academic average, and obtained her Master of Music degree in 1967. She came to France for the first time in July 1967 to study counterpoint, harmony, and composition at the American Conservatory of Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, with the great Nadia Boulanger, who had also taught, among others, Aaron Copeland, Pierre Henry, Phillip Glass, and also Quincy Jones.

After such an illustrious cursus, Rhoda Scott is at ease in any context: classical music, jazz, gospels and blues. Gifted with an exceptional memory, she can play hundreds of themes from standards, but capable of composing a large part of her repertory. It was Count Basie who discovered her and hired her to play in his club in Harlem, which is where Eddie Barclay, during a stay in New York with his friend Raoul Saint-Yves, heard her play. Impressed by her original style and her communicative talent, they suggested she come to Paris. Director of the renowned jazz club, Le Bilboquet, Raoul Saint-Yves signed her on in July 1968. The following year her first French album was released on the Barclay label, “Take A Ladder,” on which, accompanied on drums by Daniel Humair, she interpreted jazz standards, as well as themes from “West Side Story,” and her own composition, “Take A Ladder.” The album was an immediate success, both critical and popular.

Mastering perfectly her Hammond Organ, the famous B-3, attached to three Leslie speakers, Scott records and performs generally with her only support being a drummer, playing her own bass lines on the organ pedalboard. She invariably removes her shoes to play, which has earned her the nickname of “The Barefoot Lady,” or in French, “l’Organiste aux Pieds Nus.” In October 1969, she wed Raoul Saint-Yves who continued to be the producer of her numerous recordings, usually associated with a particular circumstance (“Live At The Olympia in 1971, “In New York With Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra” in 1975, “With Kenny Clarke” in 1977, etc.) or a particular theme (“Ballades” in 1973, “Orgues de Noël” in 1977, “Negro Spirituals” in 1983, etc.) All published on the Barclay label. In 1978, Eddie Barclay presented Scott with a trophy attesting the sale of over 500 000 albums sold.

With the arrival of the Compact Disc, while many of her vinyl albums were being re-edited or compiled, Scott signed a contract with the Verve label and recorded “Frame For The Blues” (1992,) “Feeling The Groove” (1993,) and “Alone” (1997.) In 2003, her “Encore, Encore, Encore,” with Lucien Dobat on drums, was released on the Sunnyside label (USA). Scott is frequently sought after for her powerful Hammond sound. Among her many collaborations, one can mention “Organ Masters” with Emmanuel Bex, Thierry Eliez, Stéfan Patry, and Benoît Sourisse, “Soul Sisters” with singer La Velle, “Rock My Boat “with David Linx and André Ceccarelli, or “Djangolized” with violinist Aurore Voilqué. On stage, she has been seen with Ella Fitzgerald, George Benson, ,and Ray Charles.

At the famous festival, “Jazz à Vienne” she created in 2004 the Rhoda Scott Lady Quartet with musicians Sophie Alour (tenor sax,) Airelle Besson (bugle,) and Julie Saury (drums.) A group that has lasted, with Airelle Besson being replaced by Lisa Cat-Berro (alto sax.) often appearing at the Sunset Jazz Club in Paris, and on tour.. In 2017, Stéphane Portet, owner of the Sunset, created his own label in order to record the CD “We Free Queens”, with special guests Geraldine Laurent, Anne Pacéo, and Julien Alour.

In 2018, Soctt was promoted to the title of Commandeur in the Order of Arts and Letters. She lives regularly in Chartres, and is active with many choral groups, having made arrangements of Negro Spiritual which are sung throughout France. In 2014, 47 years after her first Master’s degree, Scott obtained a Master of Arts degree in Jazz History and Research from Rutgers University of New Jersey. For her 80th birthday, Scott has chosen the rising generation of jazzwomen in France. The grand lady of the Hammond organ offers us a jazz which is generous with swing and a touch of blues; a music as joyful as it is lively, music within every listener’s field of reference. http://www.rhoda-scott.com/bio/

The eldest daughter of an American pastor, Rhoda Scott was immersed in the atmosphere of gospels throughout her childhood.

Passionate about the Hammond organ, The Barefoot Lady was quickly fascinated by jazz and its bluesy swing: “I first knew religious music and then jazz”. She has around fifty records to her credit.

Arrived in France in 1968, she played for many years in duet with a drummer. This was followed by Daniel Humair, Franco Manzecchi and Félix Simtaine. In 2009, she recorded Soul Sisters with singer La Velle and, in 2011, Rock my boat, with David Linx and André Ceccarelli. Recently, it was with her Lady Quartet that she played, recording We free Queens (nod to We free kings by Roland Kirk), with Sophie Alour (ts), Lise Cat Berro (as) and Anne Paceo (dm). For Movin’Blues, she returns to her old loves: the duo with drums. She is here accompanied by Thomas Derouisseau, young drummer who we discovered in Liège for the West Side Story Medley project. Here she chooses an eclectic repertoire: the spiritual Let my people go (Go down Moses), Caravan by Juan Tizol, Come Sunday by Duke Ellington, Honeysuckle Rose by Fats Waller and Watch what happens by Michel Legrand, without forgetting one or the other references to the blues: Movin’Blues, Blue Law, Blues at Pinthière. We find all the magic of the Hammond organ, its bluesy swing, its low notes played with the feet: “I sing with my instrument: it breathes in me.” A nice cover but a small gap: the list of titles does not specify the names of the composers.

Born in the United States, Rhoda Scott, the eldest daughter of a traveling pastor, grew up, she recalls, in the atmosphere of the small black churches with the accents of gospels and spirituals. In France, she also held the organ for forty years in her parish of Perche: “I sing with my instrument. He breathes in me. I’m faithful to it I first knew religious music and then jazz “, “God can encompass all styles of music” she says. Passionate about Bach’s works, she has established herself as the ambassador of the Hammond organ popularized by artists like Jimmy Smith. Mastery, energy and thick timbres, Rhoda Scott remains the living myth of the Hammond organ. Encircled by two monumental Leslie cabins and B3 controllers, she hops with a smile to groove his keyboards by ensuring a swing “bluesy”, airy and hard-hitting … With fifty records to his credit, concerts at the Olympia and in the most prestigious festivals, Rhoda Scott returns with his new “Movin ‘Blues” to his first love the drum organ duo that made his success and his trademark. The Barefoot Lady is back!

The Barefoot Lady is back! After a first album success with the Rhoda Scott Lady Quartet “We free queens” and more than 100 dates of concerts around the world, the adventure continues. Far from being sparse and reserved for initiates, her music is rich, dense, groovy, like Rhoda Scott’s generosity. As a tightrope walker, she gives the Hammond organ its full dimension, respecting the great tradition of jazz and blues in a special duet with drums that has been her hallmark all along her career. Her audience will enjoy this homecoming.

This is Rhoda Scott’s second release for Doodlin’ Records and her first live recording in the United States in many years. Hear how she thrills the audience with her patented organ style and how saxophonist Ricky Woodard and drummer Akira Tana move her forward with their energy. Vocalist Kim Nalley adds extra spice with three vocals straight from the duo performances that she and Rhoda have been known for in the Bay Area.

"For her second album, it was decided to return Rhoda to her original format of organ, tenor sax and drums. Ricky Woodard was an inspired choice and his playing here is some of the best he has put on record. Woodard has been one of the major voices on his instrument for almost thirty years and has worked with Ray Charles, the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Jimmy Smith and Jeannie Cheatham’s Sweet Baby Blues Band.

Drummer Akira Tana completes the cast. He had originally been inspired by Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey and, after studying with Alan Dawson, had worked with almost everyone of note in the New York area, including bassist Rufus Reid, with whom he co-led his own combo. He returned to his native California in 1999 and has continued his active free-lance work." ~Bob Porter

Rhoda Scott (b. July 3, 1938, Dorothy, New Jersey) an African-American hard bop and soul jazz organist. The daughter of an AME minister, Scott spent much of her childhood in New Jersey, where she learned to play organ in the churches where her father served. Soon she herself was serving frequently as organist for youth and gospel choirs at her father's and other churches. Scott later studied classical piano, but she concentrated on the organ, eventually earning a Master's degree in music theory from the Manhattan School of Music.By this time she had been asked by a choir member to fill in with a small band as a jazz pianist. "The first thing I did was take my shoes off and work the pedals." From then on she always played her church organ in her bare feet, and to this date she has continued the practice. In May 2011 in a context of Versailles Jazz Festival she gave a significant performance together with a classical organist Francis Vidil, combining sonic palettes of classical organs with jazz and Hammond organs.~https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhoda_Scott

Belgian vocalist David Linx is to jazz what Rufus Wainwright is to pop, a chameleonic avant-gardist of the first order. Though Linx has been recording since the mid-1980s, a survey of just his 2010 projectsthe richly imaginative tribute Follow Jon Hendricks… If You Can, with Michele Hendricks and the French singer-songwriter André Minvielle; the clever quasi-travelogue Follow the Songlines, with Portuguese vocalist Maria João; and One Heart, Three Voices, a magnificent summit with Dutch vocalist Fay Claassen and pianist Diederik Wissels is enough to illustrate his remarkable dexterity. Throughout Rock My Boat, featuring Rhoda Scott on Hammond B3 and André Ceccarelli on drums, Linx’s adventurous eclecticism continues unabated. At various points, Linx suggests Kurt Elling channeling Jimmy Scott and Allen Ginsberg by way of Smokey Robinson, with shades of Hendricks and George Benson. Half of the dozen tracks are given over to a wide-ranging assortment of covers, extending from the hushed glory of Christian music pioneer Ralph Carmichael’s “A Quiet Place” and a bruised, bilingual exploration of Ivan Lins’ “Aos Nossos Filhos,” to a coolly swinging reading of Mose Allison’s “Foolkiller” and an arresting treatment of Miles Davis’ “Yesternow,” fitted to a Tejan Karefa poem, that suggests a lost, smoke-filled night at San Francisco’s City Lights bookstore.

The six originals are equally heterogeneous. There’s the rollicking Carnaby Street-esque title track, the sweet innocence of “Childhood,” the stealthily romantic “Where Rivers Join,” the joyful, fresh-from-Sunday-service closer, “On the Other Side,” and, most arresting, the swirling carnival of “Even Make It Up.”~Christopher Loudon http://jazztimes.com/articles/29194-rock-my-boat-david-linx

The number of jazz musicians having adopted the organ are rather few in number, compared to other instruments used in jazz:: Fats Waller, Jimmy Smith, Bill Doggett, "Wild" Bill Davis, Lou Bennet, Jimmy McGriff, and naturally Rhoda Scott.
The latter achieves an original synthesis in her productions and in her music and she allows herself with grace and joy to combine themes which are typically jazz, other religious, but also themes from classical music played in jazz.
A minister's daughter, brought up in the classical music tradition, and having attended Manhattan School of Music in New York, surrounded by traditional Afro-American music, how could it be otherwise?
This is wat she demonstrates in her music. Thus it is not surprising to discover, other than her original compositions, wel-known jazz tunes, classical music themes or French airs at the same time as certain Gospels or Negro Spirituals.
All of this comes from the essence of her personality and the unique characteristics of the Hammond organ, so original on the level of jazz music.

I stand at the forefront of Jazz Manouche. As a musician he is one of the few able to navigate between styles and genres, whether it's playing bebop with Richie Cole, musette with Jo Privat or jazz Manouche with my own band, Alma Sinti, never letting one style bleed into the other and always maintaining my own identity. It is with the latter group that I has risen above the rest of my contemporaries. Alma Sinti uses Jazz Manouche as a base to incorporate swing, Latin, bop and valse Manouche and musette all without losing their unique guitar/accordion driven sound and all supported with “le pompe”, the Manouche style of rhythm guitar that gives the music its unique flavor. A gifted and prolific composer and improviser par excellence whose originals “Jojo Swing” and “Just One for Babik” have become standards in the jazz Manouche lexicon. I am at the top of a very short list of Jazz Manouche's most important and respected players. My record company, Djaz Records has released a slew of acclaimed CD's highlighting some of today's finest artists including Dorado and Tchavolo Schmitt and Dino Mehrstein. They swing- three guitarists, acoustic bassist, and button accordionist - offer a heady mix of tzigane (music in the gypsy style), musette (post-1910, accordion-driven music played for public balls), and jazz associated with Belgian gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt , Stephan Grappelli and the Quintette du Hot Club de France during the '30s and '40s. I am perhaps best known for my work with accordionists, having in the past accompanied the late great accordion legend Jo Privat for years, and later he has collaborated with other fine players of piano des bretelles, like Jean-Claude Laudat and Daniel ... ~ All About Jazz

One of the most beautiful of the year projects. A single CD from 3 amazing concerts recorded in 2008 in Paris. Rhoda Scott, the famous organist barefoot which was discovered by Count Basie and will happen the first time in France in 1968 at the request of Eddie Barclay and his partner Raoul Saint-Yves, still on the lookout for new talent .. . and La VELLE, whose real name Lavelle McKinnie Duggan, singer Rhythm N Blues and Gospel, musical prodigy (at the age of eleven she was the youngest student at the National Conservatory of Chicago), met for the first time. Their common origins, their natural swing and faith make this meeting an unprecedented event in their respective careers. Covers of Beatles to jazz walks through the energy of the Gospel. Rhoda Scott, the Queen of the Hammond organ that has so far registered about fifty albums and La VELLE, which has a unique voice four octaves recognizable from the first note. Two stars that give us the best of themselves. They are simply sublime. ~ Translate by google  http://www.amazon.fr/Soul-Sisters-CD-La-Velle/dp/B002JRR6N6

Enjoying the music, she agreed to stay on with the band on condition that she be allowed to play organ instead of piano. Choosing as her instrument the Hammond Organ, she soon became a preeminent jazz musician.

Scott was first attracted to the organ in her father’s church at age seven. “It’s really the most beautiful instrument in the world,” she stated in a recent interview. “The first thing I did was take my shoes off and work the pedals.” From then on she always played her church organ in her bare feet, and to this date she has continued the practice, earning her nicknames such as “The Barefoot Lady” and “The Barefoot Contessa.” Following her lead, many other performers of popular organ music now also play barefoot. Because of her church training, however, Scott uses the pedals to play a genuine bass line, unlike many other jazz organists, which allows her to use her left hand for more elaborate chord work. The resulting music is an energetic fusion of musical styles that partakes of jazz, gospel, and classical, reflecting both Scott’s early experience and her formal training. In 1967 Scott moved to France, where she has since spent most of her career and earned recognition far greater than that accorded to her in the United States, though she often performs in the latter country as well. http://www.last.fm/music/Rhoda+Scott/+wiki
