Nine years ago, marvelous Carmen Bradford knocked me sideways with her soaring With Respect, and, in 1997 she made it a one-two punch with the equally sublime Finally Yours, which suggested her as an obvious heir to the Sarah-Ella throne. Then, apart from the odd guest spot here and there, nothing (or at least nowhere near enough). Now, after seven too-quiet years, Bradford is back with the multi-shaded Home With You (Azica), still sounding like a million bucks as she traverses a standards-heavy assortment of 13 tracks in the graceful company of pianist Shelly Berg. From the sweetly contemplative “My Shining Hour” and the gorgeously plaintive “My Ideal” to a peppy reading of the Marvin Gaye anthem “How Sweet It Is” (a terrific showcase for Berg’s elegant artistry) and a blistering ride aboard Ellington’s “A” train, Bradford remains a force to be reckoned with-a virtual tornado of talent and imagination. Most satisfying of all is the gentle title track, with music by Berg and lyrics by the wonderful Lorraine Feather, which is as warm and comforting as cocoa. ~ Christopher Loudon https://jazztimes.com/reviews/vox/carmen-bradford-home-with-you/

Diva's latest Cd was recorded over two nights last September at Dizzy's Club in Lincoln Center. The band devours John McNeil's swinging chart of Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here With You," featuring Janelle Reichman's powerful tenor sax and Dauber's delicious muted trumpet. Tenorist Leigh Pilzer and flugelhornist Nadje Noordhuis share the spotlight in Scott Whitfield's lush setting of "Stars Fell on Alabama." The band adds some punch in their swaggering rendition of the pop song "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," hardly a standard, but it fits in just fine. Vocalist Carmen Bradford is added for four selections, highlighted by her soulful takes of "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "This Can't Be Love."

The disc wraps with Ellen Rowe's imaginative scoring of Leonard Bernstein's "America," featuring Tomoko Ohno's driving piano, Lisa Parrott's gutsy baritone sax and Tanya Darby's sizzling trumpet. ~ Ken Dryden https://www.allaboutjazz.com/sherrie-maricle-live-from-jazz-at-lincoln-center-and-what-the-world-needs-now-by-ken-dryden.php

Carmen Bradford - Finally Yours

(3:07) 10. More Than A Trial

Originally issued in 1992 on the Amazon label and then reissued five years later under the larger Evidence cover, this is Austin, TX, native Carmen Bradford's first album under her own name. Endowed with a powerful, expressive, wide-ranged voice, Bradford seasons her jazz vocalizing with soul and blues as she delivers on a play list of familiar and not so familiar material embossed with a variety of tempi. There's "Destiny," done with a Latin rhythm at an up-tempo pace and featuring the guitar of Charlton Johnson (who also composed the tune). She dips into the Lionel Hampton songbook for one of his hardly ever heard tunes, "Chicago Hello," showing off her swinging aptitude, this time with Bill Easley and Steve Greenfield sharing the solo spotlight on tenor, making it one of the more engaging tracks on the CD. Memories of Motown are recalled with Ray Charles' "I Believe to My Soul," done with Aretha Franklin in mind. Bradford shows she is at home with pure romantic ballads on a very heartfelt "The Right to Love," with James Polk carrying the bulk of the accompanist load. In fact, "heartfelt" may be the one best word that characterizes what is going on at this session. Bradford throws everything she has into each tune, leaving no emotion untouched. Even the Ella Fitzgerald classic "Rough Ridin'" gets a demonstrative reading, as the band offers a couple of quotes from the familiar racetrack call to colors. Backed by topflight jazz personages, who she uses very effectively, this is a more than credible first outing and a solid harbinger of good things to come by Bradford. ~ Dave Nathan https://www.allmusic.com/album/finally-yours-mw0000024152

(4:48) 15. I See You (Feat. Peggy Lee)

Due to his being such a talented altoist, arranger and occasional trumpeter for seven decades, it is often forgotten that Benny Carter wrote some worthy songs along the way. "When Lights Are Low" and "Blues in My Heart" are standards while "Only Trust Your Heart," "Key Largo" and the novelty hit "Cow-Cow Boogie" are close. For this unusual set, 14 different singers had opportunities to interpret one or two Carter compositions while joined by a fine quintet consisting of cornetist Warren Vache, pianist Chris Neville, bassist Steve LaSpina, drummer Sherman Ferguson and Carter himself (88 at the time!) on alto. The ambitious program includes five Carter songs that were receiving their world premiere; in addition Carter also wrote or co-wrote the lyrics to nine of the pieces. The singers all show respect for the melody and words with Jon Hendricks being playful on "Cow-Cow Boogie," Joe Williams quite touching on "I Was Wrong" and a weakened Peggy Lee making a memorable cameo on "I See You." The vocalists consistently seem quite inspired by the unique project. There are many short Carter and Warren Vache solos and, even with the emphasis on ballads, there is more variety than one might expect. The well-conceived tribute (which also has fine appearances by Dianne Reeves, Carmen Bradford, Kenny Rankin, Marlena Shaw, Diana Krall, Billy Stritch, Shirley Horn, Bobby Short, Ruth Brown, Weslia Whitfield and Nancy Marano). ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/songbook-mw0000180497

Carmen Bradford is a belter, a singer not afraid to show off her emotions or to occasionally go over the top. She toured with Count Basie's Orchestra for nine years but somehow never achieved much fame, only recording on a very irregular basis as a singer despite her strong musicality and powerful pipes. This set is a fine all-around showcase, featuring her with a variety of small groups including ensembles with either Cedar Walton or Donald Brown on piano. Among the other prominent players are vibraphonist Steve Nelson, guitarist Dori Caymmi, saxophonist Charles Owens, and (on a closing duet version of "Nature Boy") guitarist Michael O'Neill. Although it probably was not the best idea to perform "You'll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganini)" (since Ella owns it), Bradford sounds particularly strong on the more recent and obscure material, including Chick Corea's "High Wire," Cedar Walton's "Even Steven," and Red Mitchell's "Finally." Since she has not recorded all that often since this period, With Respect is still Carmen Bradford's definitive recording. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/with-respect-mw0000174309
