Exciting, captivating and completely distinctive” is how most jazz cognoscenti describe Shawnn's pulsating lyric style. Whether in the intimacy of a club date or the glitter of a Las Vegas showroom, Shawnn has delighted audiences from USA to Europe with her highly popular jazz repertoire laced with blues-oriented improvisations. Evident in Shawnn's liveliness of lyrical phrasing and intermittent scat variations is the influences of Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan, from whom she draws that inner core of creative energy. But good genes help, too. Shawnn's father was the late renowned bassist Jimmy Woode, veteran of the Duke Ellington band. Throw into the mix, a lot of musical inspiration and guidance from her Godfather, Clark Terry, and you come up with a combination that can't miss. Percussion great and latin/jazz impressario Mongo Santamaria discovered Shawnn working in a club in San Jose, California and signed her on the spot to tour with his band. Shawnn electrified audiences as his only vocalist and female percussionist during that two-year circuit where she shared the stage with such greats as Stan Kenton, Celia Cruz, the Fania All-Stars, and Weather Report.

Since then, Shawnn has shared the state with a prestigious list of notables jazz names: Clark Terry, Red Holloway, Ray Brown, Lionel Hampton, Frank Foster and the Basie Band, Nat Adderly, Kenny Barron, Hank Jones, Bobby Durham, James Williams, Jimmy Cobb, Keter Betts, Stanley Jordan, Ed Thigpen, Johnny Griffin, and Benny Golson....to name a few. Ms. Monteiro has delighted audiences from the USA to Europe with her highly popular jazz repertoire laced with blues-oriented improvisations and the American Songbook. The true quality of Shawnn's voice is best experienced in the ultimate setting of the club dates where her warm charisma can be personally felt by those fortunate enough to spend an evening with her, She continues to teach Master Classes all over the world, including one ongoing every summer in Italy since 1995. She is an adjunct Professor at the Hartt School/Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz , University of Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut and also Rhode Island College in Providence Rhode Island.

Her popularity continues to grow as clubgoers from Los Angeles to Rome extol the special feelings they share as she lulls them into a mellow mood as only a sensitive jazz vocalist can do. The true magical quality of Shawnn's exciting voice is best experienced in the ultimate setting of the club dates where her warm charisma can be personally felt by those fortunate enough to spend and evening with her. Shawnn teaches a Master Vocal Class in Rome and Genova, Italy every summer. (Ongoing since 1995. Artist in Residence – 2 Years at Rhode Island College (Jazz Vocals) She is also an adjunct Professor (in Jazz Vocals) at both Rhode Island College, Providence, RI and Harrt School of Music, Univ. of Hartford, Hartford, CT. http://www.shawnnmonteiro.com/biography/

It isn't hard to understand why Shawnn Monteiro would call this release One Special Night. Recorded live at Sculler's in Boston in 2002, this CD finds the underexposed jazz singer joining forces with some of bop's true heavyweights, including trumpeter Clark Terry, bassist Jimmy Woode (Monteiro's father), and drummer Jimmy Cobb; John Harrison III, a capable pianist, is also on board. One Special Night underscores the fact that while Monteiro is hardly the most original or groundbreaking singer in the world, she's enjoyably good at what she does and the singer's basic recipe (a strong Carmen McRae influence with traces of Sarah Vaughan and Marlena Shaw) serves her well when she wraps her big, full-bodied voice around overdone standards like "Just in Time," "All My Tomorrows," and "The Nearness of You." Monteiro isn't terribly adventurous not stylistically, not in her choice of material but she gets the job done and does so in an expressive, soulful fashion. Although Monteiro is featured on most of the tracks, she lays out a few times and lets the quartet take over on Thelonious Monk's "Let's Cool One" and Terry's playful "Having Chit'lins on the Champs Elysees, Paris" (which gives Terry a chance to sing and have some humorous fun with his Mumbles character).

It should be noted that Terry was 81 when One Special Night was recorded not exactly a spring chicken, but the veteran improviser certainly isn't showing his age on any of these performances; in fact, his chops are holding up impressively well. One Special Night doesn't offer a lot of surprises, but it's a solid disc that paints an attractive, if conventional, picture of Monteiro and illustrates Terry's remarkable durability as a musician. ~ Alex Henderson http://www.allmusic.com/album/one-special-night-mw0000331851

Tributes to legendary jazz greats of the past dot the landscape of today's music, but few can actually boast a direct connection to the artist of homage. Singer Shawnn Monteiro—long influenced by the beautiful voice of pianist and vocalist Carmen McRae—is an exception. Her father and godfather, bassist Jimmy Woode and trumpeter Clark Terry, respectively, both performed with McRae, and Monteiro grew up listening to stories of their experiences. With To Carmen with Love, Monteiro pays tribute to a great jazz artist who not only left an indelible mark on the jazz world, but also played an inspirational role in Monteiro's own musical development.

Monteiro and co-producer/pianist Mike Renzi combed through more than thirty McRae albums and found a group of songs that the singer recorded more than once, indicating some special significance. For her homage, Monteiro performs these very same songs, primarily from The Great American Songbook, her hushed and earthy vocals creating a unique interpretation of McRae's preferred standards. With a core trio of Renzi, bassist Dave Zinno and drummer Steve Langone, Monteiro begins the tribute with "Old Devil Moon," scatting and swinging over devilish instrumental accompaniment.

The classic "Yesterdays" and Cole Porter's "I Concentrate on You" seem to find an especially sweet place with the singer, who delivers two emotional statements. McRae performed "Old Black Magic," "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "I Have the Feeling I've Been Here Before" often, and here, Monteiro treats these standards more than well. Bobby Troup's "Your Looking At Me" and Melissa Manchester's "Come In From The Rain" are but two of the many soft tunes the singer takes to heart here.

Monteiro continues swinging through the standard repertoire—loose and playful on "Mean To Me," bluesy on "Miss Brown (To You), and sultry on the Kurt Weil/Ogden Nash staple "Speak Low." The vocalist closes the set on the Eden Ahbez's Latin-tinged "Nature Boy," introduced by Zinno and completing a tribute to one of the greatest ladies of jazz. Regardless of theme or special circumstance, To Carmen with Love is one of the better jazz vocal recordings around, and captures a superb performance from the classy Monteiro. Renzi and the trio also deserve mention for their marvelous support, providing the sparkle that helps Monteiro to shine. ~Edward Blanco
