An absolute gem, featuring some of the best players in Scandinavia in an extremely well thought-out program of music, paying tribute to "musicians and artists who shaped new sounds and ideas." It's the brainchild of independent record producer Torgil Rosenberg and pianist Jan Lundgren. Three top Swedish musicians, Peter Asplund on trumpet, Klas Lindqvist on alto sax and clarinet, and Janne Bengtsson on flute, join Lundgren's already all-star Artistry group, filling out the sound on selected numbers. The choice of musicians and composers receiving tribute is highly eclectic, ranging from alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, pianist Horace Silver, trumpeter Miles Davis and big band leader Stan Kenton to singer June Christy, Swedish composer/pianist Nils Lindberg (paired with US bassist Red Mitchell, who lived in Sweden for many years) and composers George Gershwin and Billy Strayhorn. The album opens with reed multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Giuffre's arrangement of Lee Konitz's marvelous post bop piece, "Palo Alto," on which Lundgren solos superbly. It continues with Mel Powell's quirky "Shirley Steps Out," with reed man Klas Lindqvist taking solo honors.

Vocalist Vivian Buczek is a revelation, displaying full-fledged confidence and a maturity only hinted at in her previous recordings with the group. She performs great versions of Harold Arlen's bittersweet "Last Night When We Were Young" and George Gershwin's "Changing My Tune," switches with consummate ease from Queen of Cool June Christy to Judy Garland, albeit singing the best, bluesiest song in Garland's book, "The Man That Got Away," written by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin for the 1954 film A Star Is Born.  Buczek does her best with the rather dated "back to nature" lyrics of Lindberg and Mitchell's "As You Are" and turns in a fine wordless vocal on "Undercurrent Blues," by Chico O'Farrill whose arrangements ushered King of Swing Benny Goodman, somewhat unwillingly, into the bebop era.

She also chooses the closer, going for Miles Davis' "Boplicity" and handling Ray Passman and Holli Ross' high-speed "Bebop Lives" lyrics with great aplomb. Hollywood composer David Raskin's "The Bad And The Beautiful" is one of two outstanding solo outings by Lundgren. The other is a lovely, lingering interpretation of Billy Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom."  Guitarist Jacob Fischer's solo does wonders for "Fantasy" by Prince of Pretension Stan Kenton (based on a piece by classical composer Maurice Ravel), while Hans Backenroth plays some terrific bass on Horace Silver's "The St. Vitus' Dance." Only rarely do albums come any better than this.By Chris Mosey http://www.allaboutjazz.com/tribute-jan-lundgren-volenza-review-by-chris-mosey.php

Laid back, elegante and personal, Cole Porter is celebrated by the pianist Jan Lundgren together with musicians from the Swedish jazz elite. A comprehensive booklet is included, with images and stories of Cole Porter and the 15 songs. Timelessness is about the hardest thing to accomplish. As well as creating something new and unique out of music and worldfamous artists that already have been played, celebrated and interpreted in a numerous of ways. That does not stop the Artistry Jazz Group from undertaking Cole Porter, in a pearl gallery of songs from Porter's great treasury. Count on a virtous jazz experience thanks to renowned musicians such as the pianist Jan Lundgren, the bass player Hans Backenroth, the guitarist Jacob Fischer, the drummer Johan Löfcrantz Ramsay and the big discovery; vocalist Vivian Buczek.

The album is a sequel to last years success album We Like Previn, where the same constellation, at that time under the name of The Swedish Connection, interpreted André Previn  with excellent reviews both in Sweden and abroad. As with the previous album, Too Darn Hot comes with a ambitious and comprehensive booklet with stories about the composer, the selected songs and the musicians. Information that brings the listening and enjoyment to an extra dimension. http://www.volenza.se/en/music/ajg/too-darn-hot

Acoustic jazz has had a surplus of George Gershwin tributes over the years -- some of them quite memorable, some of them pretty routine. One of the most memorable examples of a jazzman embracing Gershwin's music in the 1990s was this 1996 date by veteran tenor saxophonist Bernt Rosengren. Leading an all-Scandinavian octet that includes Gunnar Bergsten on baritone sax, Tommy Koverhult on soprano sax, Hakan Nyquist on French horn, Sven Berggren on trombone and Peter Nordahl on piano, the Swedish improviser focuses entirely on the music from the 1930s musical Porgy & Bess and provides thoughtful arrangements that recall Miles Davis' orchestral work of the late 1950s.

Although the CD is entirely instrumental, Rosengren called it a "jazz opera" and saw the horns as portraying main characters from the play: while Bergsten is Porgy and Koverhult is Bess, the leader "plays" Sporting Life. But while lovers of the play will find that information of interest, even those who have never seen a production of Porgy & Bess will find Rosengren's arrangements of classics like "Summertime," "I Loves You So" and "It Ain't Necessary So" rewarding. In Sweden, this CD was exalted as one of the saxman's finest achievements, and those who made that claim weren't exaggerating. Coincidentally, Rosengren was born the very year Gershwin died (1937), which underscores the remarkable staying power Gershwin's songs have.By Alex Henderson

Carling Big Band with Gunhild herself in the forefront is the band that hit knockout on the entire world of music, dancers and audience. There is no band in the whole world that this original orchestra where all the musicians play multiple instruments composes dances and plays to the crowd roar.

The album variety show is a collection of Gunhild Carling Big Band's acclaimed show of the same name from the summer (2013) live performances.

This collection is also called the "Royal Edition" where all the songs from the album were performed in the Swedish king's palace in September-13, when the king was celebrating 40 years as a regent.

QUOTES ABOUT THE SHOW AND GUNHILD CARLING FROM THE PRESS:
“At the center of this multi-faceted and sometimes circus -like jazz show are the charismatic and multitalented Gunhild Carling. Her ability to articulate musical perfect score on just about any instrument is rather sensational.
Although it did Gunhild Carling vocal onslaught splendidly, mainly unmistakable Billie Holiday influence in “You are my only universe” and their own bittersweet song “Open love letter”.”

Pianist Jan Lundgren is a jazz musician much in the mold of such '60s icons as Dave Brubeck and Horace Silver. Lundgren's measured and crisp technique give him an edge in bringing challenging, modern jazz to a wider more populist audience. He plays in an "in" style reminiscent of many late-'50s to early-'60s musicians but always seems to be able to add a harmonic nod toward the future. Similarly, Victor Young, one of the most prolific Hollywood composers during the 1940s, produced some of the most performed songs in jazz history. These "standards" with their unique combination of hummable melodies over complex harmonic arrangements fit perfectly with Lundgren's style. This immensely listenable session opens with a gorgeous rendition of "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance With You" featuring vocalist Stacey Kent. Kent has a sweet, sprightly, utterly irresistible voice that is the perfect introduction to the rest of this well-paced album. Juxtaposed to Kent's light, swinging approach is adventurous vocalist Deborah Brown who combines the best improvisatory abilities of Betty Carter and Ella Fitzgerald. Brown joins Lundgren and bandmates, bassist Mattias Svensson and drummer Rasmus Kihlberg on songs such as "Stella By Starlight" and "Beautiful Love." Rounding out the disc is the legendary tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin who brings his ruddy, warm sound to the up-tempo "A Weaver of Dreams" and "When I Fall in Love." ~Matt Collar

Swedish-born saxophonist Arne Domnérus looms large in the annals of European jazz -- his breakthrough performance at the Paris Jazz Fair of 1949 is widely cited as the tipping point of the Scandinavian bop movement. Born in Stockholm on December 20, 1924, Domnérus studied clarinet as a child and made his professional debut during the early '40s, playing alto sax in popular dance bands led by Lulle Ellboj and Simon Brehm. By 1942 he led his own group and made his recorded debut in 1945, honing an urbane, sophisticated style that nevertheless possessed an urgency often absent from the cool, remote tone often associated with Swedish jazz. American icons Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie were both in attendance for Domnérus 1949 Paris festival gig, a performance which served notice that players of European descent could offer their own authoritative interpretations of music largely considered an African-American phenomenon -- Parker was so impressed that he signed Domnérus for the Scandinavian tour he mounted a year later. Throughout the '50s Domnérus headlined the Stockholm jazz club Nalen, often appearing alongside trumpeter Rolf Ericson and baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin (who both turn up in the 1952 short film Arne Domnérus Spelar). Domnérus also joined Stockholm locals including pianist Bengt Hallberg for a landmark 1953 Swedish tour in support of American trumpeters Clifford Brown and Quincy Jones. From 1956 to 1965 Domnérus served as a member of Harry Arnold's Swedish Radio Big Band, continuing on with its successor Radiojazzgruppen through 1978 -- concurrently he wrote for television and films, most notably scoring 1966's Nattlek, a film produced by Mai Zetterling and based on her own novel. Domnérus' 1977 LP Jazz at the Pawnshop proved an unprecedented hit, selling more than half a million copies upon its original release -- a year later, he returned with Duets for Duke, a collaboration with Hallberg that captures both men at the zenith of their artistry. While remaining true to his bop roots, Domnérus cited traditional Scandinavian folk music as a growing influence throughout the later chapters of his career, and from the '70s on he regularly performed live in churches, inspired by Duke Ellington's own sacred concerts. He also toured the U.S. and Japan, and recorded with American notables including Clark Terry, James Moody and Jimmy Rowles. After several years in poor health, Domnérus died in Stockholm on September 2, 2008 at the age of 83.

Rune Gustafsson - Heavily inspired by generations of blurry-toned jazz guitar maestros such as Jimmy Raney, Jim Hall, and Tal Farlow, this Swedish artist went on to compose critically acclaimed film soundtracks as well as pick and strum. The Swedish music scene in general is where documentation of Rune Gustafsson is most prevalent, his discography on Sonet, Metronome, and other labels even including a tribute to soul genius Stevie Wonder. The guitarist began performing folk music as a young teen, apparently under considerable prodding from an uncle who was already engaged in the same kind of activity. Gustafsson had evolved to playing jazz on stages in the early '50s, his bandleaders including Bert Dahlander, Putte Wickman, Hacke Bjorksten, and Lars Gullin. When profiled in Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz in the '70s, Gustafsson talked about his ambitions in composing and arranging concert music, a promise he certainly made good on in the ensuing years. He also expanded his instrumental arsenal for some of these projects, recording on the banjo and the celeste, among other unusual axes. His film credits include the 1992 Ingmar Bergman release with the English title of Sunday's Children.

Swisss vocalist Miriam Klein first came into the public eye when she performed in Paris in the 1950s with Dexter Gordon, Pierre Michelot, Don Byas and Art Simmons. Later she attended Music School in Vienna and went back to Switzerland to work with the ensembles of her husband, trumpeter and guitarist Oscar Klein. It was in the 1960s and 1970 that she became known internationally. In 1978 her album 'By Myself' was produced by concert management tycoon Horst Lippmann for the L+R label. Lippmann: This is the NEW Miriam Klein confident of her own way of singing. A Miriam Klein By Herself hence the album title. Jazz critic Markus Woelfle: It is her best recording and if she were an American lady and not a Swiss this album would be the pride of everyone's vocal collection.

The emotional power of her voice and the rich shadings of her interpretations are highlighted by the perfect accompaniment of her inspired sidemen Roland Hanna and George Mraz. It is rare that a pianist offers such perfection and musical additions to a singer - the solos are brilliant and of perfect architecture without overpowering the vocalist. Miriam Klein celebrated her last triumph on her saxophonist son David's 'My Marilyn' album (ENJ-9422) and the label is proud to now present 'By Myself' for the first time on CD. http://akmuzik.com.tr/ak/catalog/showalbum.asp?album=JNKPMPQPO

The idea was to form a band with top jazz and swing players in Stockholm. The four horn players in the front line play a important role in the band. With cleverly written arrangements, mostly by Klas Lindquist and Fredrik Lindborg, the band can play softly as a small group and seconds later explode in a big band fortissimo. The rhythm section gives the band a bouncing ground where solos and ensemble playing become a joy. The members of the Stockholm Swing All Stars are considered as the best in its field in Sweden. The Stockholm Swing All Stars play swing and jazz music suitable both for concerts and for dancing. The band often plays at lindy hop and other dance events as well as in concert halls around Europe.

As a general proposition, Sweden produces more good jazz artists per capita than any other European country, or so it seems. And vocalists are no exception. Song stylist (and she is a stylist) Lina Nyberg follows in the footsteps and joins such notable vocalists as Monica Zetterlund, Jeanette Lindstrom, and Nannie Porres. Nyberg cites Zetterlund and Porres as inspirations along with American singers Bessie Smith, Ray Charles, Jimmy Rushing, and Nancy Wilson, whose influence is evident in Nyberg's delivery and phrasing. The Swedish singer has an affinity for using one-word titles for her albums.

Previous CDs were Temper, Close, and Open. Her quintet album won the 1995 Swedish Grammy Award for jazz. Now comes Smile with a program of 11 standards and one Beatles' song. But the standards are delivered in a manner that is at the same time atypical and entertaining. Nyberg has her way with melody as she modifies the accents and phrasing for each tune. This stylistic approach is not just a mere affectation, but a legitimate and effective interpretation device that shows a close camaraderie for lyrics, and it works well. Her pronunciation of certain words is exaggerated, again for effect. She can be ardent and little girl sounding.

The usually mournful "Good Morning Heartache" is done in a detached, straightforward way without any indication of regret. This tune also demonstrates the novel arrangements, another compelling feature of the album. Nyberg comes in with just Göran Klinghagen's guitar behind her, then Anders Persson's piano enters, followed again by guitar with Nyberg's voice playing the horn part. Unique arrangements and sounds are possible given the unusual instrumental configuration: piano, guitar, bass, and a cello with two violins. The dark, cloudy sound of the cello contrasts with the clarity of Nyberg's voice on "Wild Is the Wind." She also takes the time to sing the verse of several of the tunes. But it is the feeling of storytelling Nyberg conveys as she delivers the words. They're not treated as a bunch of letters and syllables, but as image creators that are to be transported to the listener. This album is like hearing a picture book and is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan  http://www.allmusic.com/album/smile-mw0000969663

In the fall of 2017 the final majestic part of Lina Nybergs astonishing album trilogy about humanity, the world and music itself is to be released  “Terrestrial” (Hoob records). Lina has composed and arranged music for symphony orchestra (and her band) on commission from the NorrlandsOperan Symphony Orchestra in Umeå. The piece will have it’s first live performance at Umeå Jazz Festival in October 2017. Lina Nyberg is one of Sweden’s most creative and innovative jazz singers. For about 20 years she has been attracting consistent and widespread attention, starting with the debut in 1993 with the duo CD “Close” together with late pianist Esbjörn Svensson until now, about to release her 17th album. Since 2013 Lina has been working on this trilogy of albums, composing new music about our planet and the elements for different kinds of settings, exploring the art of instrumentation. In 2014 part one was released  “Sirenades” (music for big band and jazz quintet) and 2016 part 2 “Aerials” (music for string quartet and jazz quintet). Lina Nyberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1970 and raised in an artistic home. She discovered jazz at age 14 and at 18 years of age Lina began singing with Swedish senior jazz stars such as Bernt Rosengren, Nisse Sandström, Fredrik Norén Band, and others. In 1990 Lina built her own first constellation “Lina Nyberg Kvintett” consisting of Per “Texas” Johansson, Esbjörn Svensson, Dan Berglund and Mikel Ulfberg. After gratuating from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm as a Master of Fine Arts in 1993 she released her first CD- Close (Prophone records).

A duo recording with late pianist Esbjörn Svensson. An instant success and Swedish jazz classic. This was also the beginning of a very fruitful cooperation with the brilliant producer and owner of Prophone records, late Erland Boëthius. Lina and her quintet received the prestigious Swedish Grammis award for her CD “when the smile shines through” in 1995. “OPEN” released in 1998 and recorded with bassist Palle Danielsson and pianist Anders Persson, among others, was nominated for a Swedish Grammis and received raving reviews. Over the years Lina Nyberg has collaborated with various jazz musicians such as John Taylor, Marilyn Crispell, Palle Danielsson and Rigmor Gustafsson. She has toured in Scandinavia, parts of Europe, Vietnam, Canada and Brazil. A couple of times Lina also has toured Japan with Yasuhito Moris Scandinavian Connection. The Brazilian connection is also very strong to Lina and she has produced two cds dedicated to Brazil and its vast musical landscape, Brasilien (Prophone) 2003 with world famous bassplayer Anders Jormin and Brasil Big Bom 2007 (Caprice records) with big band and the great Swedish saxophonist Magnus Lindgren. Lina Nyberg is one of Sweden’s most creative and innovative jazz singers. For more than 15 years she has been attracting consistent and widespread attention, mostly in Scandinavia, but also in other parts of the world. As a solo artist and producer she has released 17 CDs. Her main constellation right now is Lina Nyberg Band featuring an all-star band: Cecilia Persson, piano, David Stackenäs, guitar, Josef Kallerdahl, bass and Peter Danemo, drums.

In March 2011 Lina Nyberg was awarded the prestigious Jazzmusician of the Year-prize by the Swedish Radio and in October 2011 she was the Guest of Honour at the Umeå International Jazz Festival. 2014 she released the first part of her planned triology with new music about the world the elements and the music itself.  “The Sirenades” a project including composing music for Norrbotten Big Band on commission and her own quintet. The Cd got a wonderful reception from the press. In 2014 she was awarded the prestigeous “Lars Gullin Award” and also the Bert Levin award. Lina was nominated as the Jazz composer of the year by the Swedish Radio Jazzkatten jury. In March 2016 part two of the triology was released: “Aerials” . This time Lina sings of avians, pilots, winds and astronauts. The record includes commissioned work for string quartet as well as poetic and expressive interpretations of jazz standards as ”Fly me to the moon” and ”Bye bye Blackbird” with her regular band. The CD recieved raving reviews from major newspapers and jazzmagazines in Scandinavia at its release and was also given great attention in national TV and radio. In April 2016 Swedish national television is broadcasting an one hour program with Lina Nyberg recorded at her 25th anniversary as an artist at Jazzclub Fasching in Stockholm. In November 2016 she recieved the grand Jazz Prize from The Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In the fall of 2017 the final majestic part of the trilogy was released – “Terrestrial” (Hoob records). Lina has composed and arranged music for symphony orchestra (and her band) on commission from the NorrlandsOperan Symphony Orchestra in Umeå. Sylvia Vrethammar is back in the competition after 11 years. “In 2002, I thought it would never be done again and now it has somehow been put in my lap. A surprise that feels like an adventure ”. Sylvia's career took off in 1970 when she hosted the popular Hyland TV show. In 1971 she participated in the Melodifestivalen for the first time and in 1973 she recorded the song Eviva España which became a thunderous success in both Sweden and the UK. The English version was on the English hit list for a total of 28 weeks and gave Sylvia a place in the Guinness Record Book. Most recently she has been seen in the television program So Much Better. I understand that you have thought of presenting different types of music and broadened the range, broadened ages of artists and it is something that feels very mature in some way and I hope I will not be disappointed, she says. Sylvia describes her song as a Brazilian-inspired tribute to finding value in what is considered obvious. The song is about what we may sometimes forget, in the small there is big in life. To value what is near and small and nice and may not be able to see a final result all the time and go ahead of events. With the death of Arne Domnerus, at the age of 83, on September 2, 2008, a great and all-pervading light went out on the Swedish jazz scene. "Dompan," as he was universally known in his homeland, started out playing Benny Goodman-influenced clarinet in a Stockholm college band in his teens, graduated to alto saxophone in diverse, long forgotten Swedish dance orchestras, then played in the Swedish jazz band that took the 1949 Paris jazz festival by storm. Later that year he cut his first records as leader for Metronome and the following year led the band that opened on Charlie Parker's tour of Sweden. He made an epic series of records with visiting Americans James Moody, Zoot Sims, George Wallington, Clifford Brown, Art Farmer and Quincy Jones. He played in Harry Arnold's Swedish Radio Big Band from 1956 to 1965, and then took over the leadership when it was reformed as a smaller outfit from 1966-1978. Though at the same time, he was always careful to keep one foot firmly in the world of more commercial music. He cut the first Swedish recording of "Rock Around The Clock," with Gunnar "Siljabloo" Nilson handling the vocals, took part in Dixieland sessions and backed a good many pop singers. In his very Swedish, unassuming way, he said he developed his own style because he couldn't hope to play like his idols, Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges and, of course, Bird.

This double CD tribute compilation features Domnerus' later recordings. It includes tracks from the classic 1977 album, Jazz at the Pawnshop, from the 1990s albums Sketches of Standards and Live is Life, (both on Proprius Records), plus four tracks from Svenska Jazzklassiker (Naxos Nostalgia), an exercise in nostalgia, featuring rather cheesy 1950s arrangements. There is also a solitary inclusion from a 1974 album, Antiphone Blues (Proprius) of his haunting rendition of the old Negro spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," backed by Gustaf Sjokvist on organ. The Pawnshop tracks are the standouts as straight-ahead jazz content, but Domnerus was also capable of transcending the most unpromising material. One example featured here is his total transformation of the hoary old Bob Dylan folk revival anthem "Blowing in the Wind" which, with the admirable Rune Gustafsson on guitar, is transformed into something of a mini masterpiece. Unfortunately, Dompan was also capable of pretension. His overblown version of his old idol Benny Carter's "The Fable of a Fool," positively drips with sentiment, replete with saccharin string and harp accompaniment.

The late Tip O'Neill once said, .."All politics is local." This certainly can be said for jazz also. All of America's metropolitan areas have a jazz contingency. Chicago has Kurt Elling, Patricia Barber, and Von Freeman; Washington DC has Buck Hill; and New York has who knows how many? The Twin Cities, Minneapolis-St. Paul, also has noted jazz talent in Dave Frishberg and vocalist Connie Evingson. Pianist/vocalist Frishberg, a native of St. Paul, has a long jazz résumé that includes School House Rock (Rhino, 1996), as well as having written numerous songs recorded by Blossom Dearie, Mel Tormé, Rosemary Clooney, Diana Krall and Tony Bennett. Frishberg exists in a rarified realm where his only peers in jazz songwriting are the great Mose Allison and Bob Dorough. For her part, Connie Evingson has released a spate of fine recordings that include Let It Be Jazz (Summit, 2003), The Secret of Christmas (Minnehaha Music, 2003) and Gypsy in My Soul (Minnehaha Music, 2005). With the release of Let It Be Jazz, a collection of Beatles tunes, Evingson began a successful run of thematic recordings that addressed holiday fare and Le Hot Club Django. Continuing in this direction, Evingson rolls out a festive collection of Frishberg classics, illustrating why Frishberg and Evingson are such essential fixtures to 21st Century jazz. Frishberg's fresh, smart lyrics are well-delivered by the ultra-hip Evingson, who reveals through her immense talent the diamonds that are Frishberg's lyrics. The title song, as well as the beautifully sexy "Peel Me a Grape," reveals Frishberg as a masterful poet and lyricist in the same vein as Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein, and Lorenz Hart. He is a master of the internal rhyme, an essential component to any successful lyric writing. Evingson's vocals are certain and sure. She deftly navigates the strolling' "Zoot Walks In," joined by Frishberg in the introduction, where the singer's vocalese power is displayed as well as Frishberg's keen pianism. "I Want to be a Sideman" quotes Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" musically and a musician's simple wish to be, not the leader, but a part of a band. "My Attorney Bernie" is great fun. Evingson and Frishberg swing for the fences and knock it out with Little Did I Dream. ~ C.Michael Bailey https://www.allaboutjazz.com/little-did-i-dream-songs-by-dave-frishberg-connie-evingson-minnehaha-music-review-by-c-michael-bailey.php

Norman Gimbel's name may not register with a lot of educated jazz fans, yet he's linked to some of the most important songs and artists in the music. Gimbel wrote the lyrics attached to harmonica ace Toots Thielemans' best known number, "Bluesette," captured Michel Legrand's musical moods in words on "I Will Wait For You" and "Watch What Happens," and opened up English-language ears to the world of bossa nova. His lyrics for many of Antonio Carlos Jobim's songs are known the world over, yet his name is rarely mentioned when these works are discussed. Minneapolis-based vocalist Connie Evingson is looking to right this wrong by shining a light in Gimbel's direction on Sweet Happy Life. Evingson gathered sixteen numbers of all shapes and sizes that feature Gimbel's lyrics, including the never-before-recorded Gimbel/Jobim blend of "Adventure," and polished them up for presentation. The softer side of Brazil comes through on "The Girl From Ipanema," with Dave Karr providing the requisite saxophone work; "Meditation," which lives up to its name; and an intimate, voice-clarinet-guitar trio take on "How Insensitive"; but Evingson doesn't just do breezy, she also goes saucy with :Agua De Beber" and beatific on "Sweet Happy Life," as she explores this South American wonderland. While Brazil is a big part of the package, Evingson isn't a one trick pony stuck in a stylistic rut. When she isn't indulging in the waters of Jobim and Bonfa, she mixes in some light swing with "Canadian Sunset," takes a roaming caravan through an arid desert on "Slow Hot Wind," and gives "Sway" a sultrier than usual makeover that would make singer Michael Buble blush. The only stylistic misstep on the bill comes with Evingson's take on the Roberta Flack-associated "Killing Me Softly With His Song." Evingson thrives in a large variety of settings on this date, but she's out of her element when it comes to out-and-out R&B/soul singing of this variety. Thankfully, this is an anomaly in an otherwise pleasing and varied program. While tribute albums are a dime-a-dozen, most of them are quickly forgotten because they've been done. Evingson deserves respect for finding a heretofore unturned stone worth turning. Norman Gimbel's words and Evingson's voice make for a beautiful marriage on this easy-on-the-ears outing. ~ Dan Bilawsky https://www.allaboutjazz.com/sweet-happy-life-connie-evingson-minnehaha-music-review-by-dan-bilawsky.php

A pair of major Swedish veterans (clarinetist Putte Wickman and altoist Arne Domnerus) join forces with the talented young pianist Jan Lundgren, guitarist Rune Gustafsson, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Aage Tanggaard to perform two CDs full of straight-ahead music. Although Wickman and Domnerus (who switches to clarinet on "Barney Goin' Easy") sound fine during these live performances (which have announcements in Swedish), the emphasis is generally on slower tempos, and the interpretations are not as fiery or competitive as one might hope. Pleasing but not essential music, with some of the brighter moments occurring on "Fine and Dandy," "Moanin'," "Broadway" and "Move." ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/happy-together%21-mw0001004133
