Becky Kilgore, a singer based in the Pacific Northwest, is a longtime associate of pianist Dave Frishberg. Frishberg is part of the impressive supporting cast (along with trombonist Dan Barrett, altoist Chuck Wilson, Scott Robinson on tenor, bass sax and clarinet, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and bassist Michael Moore) for her solo debut. Kilgore has a nice swing to her style and clearly enjoys reviving such songs as "Happy as the Day Is Long," "A Lonely Coed" and "You Can't Lose a Broken Heart." This is a remarkable record by the Howard Alden-Dan Barrett Quintet. Although the group has an instrumentation of guitarist Alden, trombonist Barrett, Chuck Wilson on alto and clarinet, bassist Frank Tate, and drummer Jackie Williams, its arrangements (some by Buck Clayton) often make the band sound a bit like the John Kirby Sextet, a classic unit comprised of trumpet, alto, clarinet, piano, bass, and drums. 

The delightful unit uplifts such tunes as "Lullaby in Rhythm," "I May Be Wrong," Charlie Shavers' "Dawn on the Desert," "Stompin' at the Savoy," and even Thelonious Monk's "Pannonica," revitalizing small-group swing. Harking back to the jazz of the 1940s and '50s, Rachael & Vilray's sophomore album, 2023's I Love a Love Song!, is a delightfully romantic and swinging homage to the golden era of traditional pop. Showcasing the talents of singer Rachael Price and singer/guitarist/songwriter Vilray Blair Bolles, Rachael & Vilray initially met while students at Boston's New England Conservatory before reconnecting around 2015 over their shared love of jazz standards and Tin Pan Alley pop. Although they've performed classic standards together (here, they take on Mack Gordon and Harry Revel's "Goodnight, My Love"), it's their knack for crafting their own swooning, literate songs in the traditional style of composers like Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer that makes their work so uniquely compelling.

It's a vibe they debuted on 2019's Rachael & Vilray and which they further perfect here. Even if their songs weren't so good (and they are) Price and Bolles can sing the heck out of a tune. Although best known for her funk-infused pop with Lake Street Dive, Price is a trained jazz singer whose dusky style evokes the cool, West Coast sound of icons like June Christy and Peggy Lee. Equally evocative, Bolles' warm, matter of fact tone brings to mind a relaxing blend of Dean Martin and Perry Como. They take turns leading songs throughout the album, often trading choruses, or as on the magical, Count Basie-esque "Just Two," sing in close harmony á la vocal groups like the Modernaires.

Other notable songs full of wry, melodic wordplay pop up throughout, as on Bolles' "Why Do I" in which Price compares her relationship woes to the animal world, singing "clams to my knowledge don't sigh/and moths ain't left wondering why/each time their fellow flies out, they needn't weep their eyes out/so why do I?" Also adding to the air of stylistic legitimacy are the duo's stellar backing ensemble featuring pianist Larry Goldings, bassist David Piltch, and drummer Joe La Barbera. I wasn’t there. I wish I had been. But the good news is that two compact discs from this band’s German tour have been issued on the Echoes of Swing label (EOSP 4058 / 4059, available separately) and they come in the ear like honey. Hot honey, if you must know: a really delicious sensation.

The gracious swingsters on these discs are Duke Heitger, trumpet / vocal; Dan Barrett, trombone, head arrangements, vocal; Dan Block, clarinet, alto, tenor; Engelbert Wroebel, clarinet, soprano, tenor; Chris Hopkins, piano; Eddie Erickson, guitar, banjo, vocal; Nicki Parrott, string bass, vocal; Butch Miles, drums; Bernard Flegar, drums (on two tracks). The material comes from March 2010, and each CD has expansive notes by Dan Barrett. This tour was the idea of the very knowing and generous jazz fan / collector / scholar / promoter Manfred Selchow, who has written two splendid books on his heroes Edmond Hall and Vic Dickenson (PROFOUNDLY BLUE and DING DING! respectively) so you know he has good taste in musicians and bands.

Volume One begins with a string of “old favorites” played with snap and crackle not to ignore pop: INDIANA and SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET, followed by BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME, with echoes of Louis and Eddie Condon and the Hampton Victors, then Eddie convinces he us he is behaving well on KEEPIN’ OUT OF MISCHIEF NOW. The reed players and rhythm make us forget that TEA FOR TWO is ninety years old, and Nicki purrs her way through LET’S DO IT (with some nifty new lyrics as well). A rhythm section feature, MONTEVIDEO, is both startling and supple, evoking a late Ellington trio and then everyone evokes a compact powerful version of the Forties Basie band with THE KING. But wait! There’s more. A nice long blues, BOCHUM ELECTRICTY BLUES, and a sweet Duke vocal / trumpet performance of DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS? (which he does).

Volume Two opens with the bright NEAL’S DEAL (a Neal Hefti line for the 1951 Count Basie Sextet), then moves back nearly thirty years for GEORGIA JUBILEE, a memory of a pre-King-of-Swing record date led by Benny, with Coleman Hawkins on the tenor, and the Sidney Bechet WASTE NO TEARS featuring Block and Wroebel. Dan Barrett sings and swings mightily on the Lionel Hampton classic WHOA BABE, and then Nicki asks the troubling question in swing, IS YOU IS OR IS YOU AIN’T MY BABY. (We is, Nicki. We can’t help it nohow.)

An extraordinary, jumping version of Earl Hines’ CAVERNISM follows, then Eddie woos the crowd, which he does so well, with ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, a sweet love song written by the unheralded member of the Great American Songbook fraternity, Jabbo Smith. WITH ‘EM, Dan Barrett’s clever, hot, boppish take on I GOT RHYTHM, keeps the imagined dancers hopping, leading into a sleekly intense ONE O’CLOCK JUMP. Another delightful version of MONTEVIDEO follows remarkable improvisations on the theme and a tender IF I HAD YOU, before the disc romps home with SWEET SUE and HINDUSTAN.

If you know the players and singers here, you won’t have to be convinced of the quality of the music on these discs. But these performances are sharply executed when the music calls for it (this band isn’t ashamed of rehearsing) and loose, fervent, courageous when it’s time for jamming. These are live performances, so you can hear the good humor and delight in the various rooms and the sound is fine, too.

My only problem is that I file my CDs alphabetically according to the leader or the musician / singer I gravitate towards. I can’t be fair to anyone by putting these CDs under B for Barrett or H for Hopkins. It seems I have to buy multiple copies to satisfy my ethical self. You might not be burdened by such demands, but you will be delighted by every note on both discs.

Rick Fay's series of Arbors releases, which really got going in 1991, are superior examples of Dixieland and small-group swing. On this set Fay sticks to tenor and soprano (leaving his clarinet in the case), welcoming such major players as trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist Dan Barrett, clarinetist Chuck Hedges, pianist-arranger Dick Cary and guest-guitarist Howard Alden (who makes a couple of rare appearances on banjo) to his octet. 

The music is played with plenty of spirit and, although all of the music but three originals was already quite vintage at the time, the musicians come up with many fresh statements. This is a logical tribute since clarinetist Bobby Gordon's main influence is Pee Wee Russell. Although Gordon's solos are not as eccentric or death-defying as Russell's, his tone is similar and there are times when he sounds eerily close to his idol. Joined by trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist Dan Barrett, tenor saxophonist Rick Fay, pianist Johnny Varro, rhythm guitarist Marty Grosz, bassist Bob Haggart, and drummer Gene Estes, Gordon explores a dozen songs composed by Russell. In addition, Gordon performs "Charles Ellsworth Stomp" (which he co-wrote) and one of Russell's favorite songs, "I'd Climb the Hightest Mountain." Since some of these numbers were co-written by Dick Cary and recorded by Russell in modern swing settings during the late '50s (rather than Dixieland dates with Eddie Condon), the music on this CD is often tightly arranged while leaving some room for spontaneous jamming. Swing is hard to define, but it’s the difference between ripe cherries and a cherry candy “with natural flavors” synthesized in a laboratory. I’m happy to report that the CD that pairs tenor saxophonist Enric Peidro and trombone legend Dan Barrett is satisfying swinging jazz throughout. In fact, it reaches new heights in the most refined yet impassioned ways. Let’s start at the back of the bandstand, or the bottom of the band (no offense intended), the fine rhythm section. I didn’t know pianist Richard Busiakewicz, bassist Lluis Llario, or drummer Carlos “Sir Charles” Gonzalez before this recording, but I love them. Their swing is unforced and easy; they know how, what, when, why, and when not to . . .

But before I write more, here’s a sonic sample, celebrating both Vic Dickenson (the composer) and his horticultural endeavors: The question of what is “authentic” is treacherous, because we defend our subjectivities with a lover’s defensive ardor, but that performance feels both expressive and controlled in the best ways. Forget for a moment the warm twenty-first century recording technology. If I heard that track, coming after a 1945 Don Byas-Buck Clayton Jamboree 78 and a Mel Powell Vanguard session, I would not think VIC’S SPOT an impostor. Swing is more than being able to play the notes or wear the hat; it’s a world-view, and this quintet has it completely.

Barrett remains a master not only of the horn, but of what I’d call “orchestral thinking,” where he’s always inventing little touches (on the page or on the stand) to make any performance sound fuller, have greater rhythmic emphasis and harmonic depth. I’ve seen him do this on the spot for years, and his gentle urgency makes this quintet even more a convincing working band than it would have been if anyone took his place. And as a trombonist, he really has no peer: others go in different directions and woo us, but he is immediately and happily himself, totally recognizable, with a whole tradition at his fingertips as well as a deep originality.

But Dan would be the first one to say that he is not the whole show: this CD offers us a swinging little band. We’ve all heard recordings, some of them dire, where the visiting “star” is supported by the “locals,” who are not up to the star’s level: many recorded performances by Ben Webster immediately come to mind. And the Angels Swing is the glorious countertruth to such unbalanced affairs, because Enric Peidro, who was new to me before I heard this CD, is a masterful player. He’s no one’s clone I couldn’t predict what his next phrase would be or where his line of thought would go and although he is not cautious, he never puts a foot wrong. You can hear his gliding presence on the track above, and for me he summons up two great and under-praised players, primarily Harold Ashby, but also a cosmopolitan Paul Gonsalves with no rough edges. He is a fine intuitive ensemble player, with an easy sophistication that charms the ear. I think of the way Ruby Braff appeared in the early Fifties: someone not afraid to play the melody, to improvise in heartfelt ways, to eschew the harder aspects of “modernism” without being affected in any reactionary ways. https://jazzlives.wordpress.com/tag/vanguard-records/

After the great success of the 2012 and 2013 editions of “International Live Swing” and after “Jazz Broadway 2011”, the great gala dedicated to swing music and dance returns to Milan. The best performers on the international scene will "tell us", with music and dance, how Jazz was born from the contamination of a large number of musical and entertainment genres: from Broadway musicals to Hollywood music, up to the jazz reinterpretation of famous classical music pieces.

"Jazz Side Story" refers to the great "West Side Story", but it is also a metaphor for how Jazz interprets the theme of our life and other forms of musical expression. West Side Story is the famous musical adaptation of the great Leonard Bernstein of Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare 1594).

The theme of the two lovers opposed by circumstances is much older and recalls dramas and legends of ancient Greece and the Celtic world, such as Troilus and Cressida, Tristan and Isolde, of course.

The theme is that of "overwhelming love", which through West Side Story, brings us to the role that Jazz has had in the world of music.

Overwhelming love is the "fil rouge" of the show: a narration of music and dance set in the America of the '30s and' 40s, through a path that intertwines the history of music, costume and vintage style, swing dances and by composers who in their time were great innovators.

On the stage of the Dal Verme the Big Band by Paolo Tomelleri, 20 brass to which is added a section of 12 strings, 2 opposing pianos, 2 drums and other instruments constitute a unique formation of its kind, which po jazz is transformed into a big band, until it becomes one of the largest symphonic rhythm orchestras in Italy.

The protagonists of the evening are jazz music and swing dance, the challenges between soloists on the international scene, which retrace Broadway musicals and certain themes of classical music.

It is known that that era was also linked to the world of dance. The orchestras addressed an audience of dancers, especially in New York. The Roseland, the Alhambra, the Savoy Ballroom were the places where most of the young people went to hear their idols. Ballrooms for 2000 people. Dancing also played a fundamental role in Broadway plays, vaudeville shows, the Cotton Club. There was no successful show that did not feature a group of dancers. BEDlam is another in the series of recordings by the unusual, fun, swinging quartet known as BED. The group’s name is the humorous acronym formed by the names of three of the band members: Becky, Eddie, and Dan. However, bassist Joel Forbes’s contributions are essential to the band’s remarkable sound. As always, Joel is heard playing acoustically here, and his rich, deep bass is much of the reason for the band’s warm, glowing sound.

This is another great collection of interesting and often-overlooked songs from the Golden Era of American songwriting. The voice of Rebecca Kilgore is sublime, and her cool phrasing has made her in demand all over the world. Like the warm-toned trombonist Dan Barrett, Rebecca has performed at Carnegie Hall and at jazz parties and major jazz festivals all over the world. Listen as she reimagines Peggy Lee’s up- tempo hit, It’s A Good Day as a finger-popping, Gospel-infused ode to joy. Dan Barrett uses his special vintage mute for a suitably-bluesy contribution to Blue Moon.

You’ll give Eddie Erickson a standing ovation (as many audiences have done all over the world) when you hear his fantastic guitar playing and his singing. Eddie is also Rebecca’s own favorite vocalist! Eddie’s beautiful baritone voice is heard in several vocals here, and in duets with Rebecca. Eddie was recently inducted into the American Banjo Hall Of Fame. His swinging plectrum banjo playing can be heard in several selections in this variety-packed album. Another highlight in this set is Eddie’s solo banjo rendition of selections from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma! Thimo Niesterok (*1996) grew up at Lake Constance in Southern Germany and has been living in Cologne since 2015. He studied jazz trumpet at ‘Hochschule für Musik und Tanz’ in Cologne with Andy Haderer and Matthias Bergmann and now works as a freelance musician. He has been on tour and played in concerts in several towns and cities in Germany and e.g. in Sweden, India and South Korea (during the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang 2018). As winner of the Kobe Jazz Street Award he was invited as soloist to Kobe Jazz Street Festival in Japan.Niesterok’s main focus is on traditional jazz and swing music.

This fun and interesting set of swinging American songs brings together five close friends who share a fondness for good tunes played with heart, and a swinging beat. BED is an acronym formed by Becky, Eddie, and Dan, three of the four members of that special quartet. (Bassist Joel Forbes is the fourth member of the troupe). BED eventually changed its funny name to honor their default leader, vocalist Rebecca “Becky” Kilgore. The group now performs as the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet. For this session, Becky, Eddie Erickson, Dan Barrett, and Joel Forbes invited their good friend Jeff Hamilton to join them on drums.

Please note there are at least two terrific drummers who share that name. This particular Jeff grew up in New Orleans, and absorbed that city’s special regard for rhythm from the musicians he heard and with whom he performed around town. Additionally, Jeff studied with the great Cie Frazier, who for many years was the drummer with the original Preservation Hall Jazz Band! Over the years, Jeff’s approach has evolved into a very personal mix of New Orleans and later swing styles. He’s a perfect fit for his like-minded colleagues in the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet. In addition to Becky’s beautiful singing and Jeff’s tasty time-keeping, Four + 1 also features vocals by Eddie Erickson. Eddie also shines here in masterful guitar work, and several hip, swinging plectrum banjo solos.

In the competitive jazz scene of New York City, Joel Forbes was at the top of the list of great jazz bassists. A long-time friend of Dan Barrett’s Joel contributes consistently propulsive bass lines, and several horn-like solos. Finally, Dan Barrett displays his usual élan in his trombone solos, and in his thoughtful backgrounds behind each of the singers. For the old favorite Midnight In Moscow, Dan puts down the trombone, and plays cornet. There have been many attempts through the years to record a jazz set for children, but usually the music is either too complex or too childish, not achieving its purpose. The music on this particular CD was written to be used for a full-length animated film called The Jazz Bears. Most of the melodies (except for five originals) are pretty familiar and simple, but the solos are topnotch and colorful. The vocals (particularly those of the great Rebecca Kilgore) are swinging and charming. Although the opening, "Being a Bear," may make one think that this CD is only for children, it will be easy for adults who are fans of mainstream swing to enjoy this project. Dan Barrett (who arranged many of the pieces) is a versatile trombonist, and his vocal on "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" is surprisingly effective. Trumpeter Spanky Davis (who has long been underrated) has quite a few hot solos, Scott Robinson (best on baritone and bass sax) is always impressive, and Jim Galloway's soprano is another asset. Recommended, for children and their jazz-loving parents alike.

"This album is a must-have for any maistream jazz lover as there are not many chances to hear this kind of jazz nowadays, even less performed with such aplomb, taste and elegant creativity. The "dream team" line up includes such luminaries as american trombone legend Dan Barrett (Benny Goodman,Woody Herman, Buck Clayton among many others) who shines throughout the recording with his lyrical solos joined by the more than apt partner-in-crime Spanish tenorman Enric Peidro whose breathy, gorgeous sax sound and clever yet singable lines are the perfect counterpoint to Barrett's melodic approach. Its a pure joy to listen to Barrett and Peidro and their laid-back, conversation-like, unnassuming aproach wich makes you think on two old friends sharing a drink while chatting about their favourite movie or fishing spot. Australian bass player and singer Nicki Parrott greatly contributes to the overall results with her swinging bass lines, perfect note choice and timing, and also with a few vocals delivered with her usual class. British piano player Richard Busiakiewicz proves himself to be an outstanding musician: the way he comps to solos is simply brilliant, bringing to mind greats like Red Garland or Winton Kelly and his solos are both flawless and swingin all the way through.

Marty Grosz, a Fats Waller-inspired vocalist, a masterful chordal acoustic guitarist and a frequently hilarious comedian, is well showcased on this Jazzology CD reissue of a set originally cut for the Statiras label. Featured with his Destiny's Tots (a group not dissimilar to his Orphan Newsboys), Grosz sings such bright numbers as "With Plenty of Money and You," "I'm In the Market for You," "I Wish I Were Twins," "My Very Good Friend the Milkman," "I'm Building Up to an Awful Letdown," and "You've Been Taking Lessons In Love." Hot solos are provided by Dick Meldonian (on tenor, alto and baritone), Dan Barrett (doubling on trombone and cornet), pianist Keith Ingham and bassist Phil Flanigan.
