Becky Kilgore, a singer based in the Pacific Northwest, is a longtime associate of pianist Dave Frishberg. Frishberg is part of the impressive supporting cast (along with trombonist Dan Barrett, altoist Chuck Wilson, Scott Robinson on tenor, bass sax and clarinet, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and bassist Michael Moore) for her solo debut. Kilgore has a nice swing to her style and clearly enjoys reviving such songs as "Happy as the Day Is Long," "A Lonely Coed" and "You Can't Lose a Broken Heart." She has a pleasing voice, gives a liberal amount of space to the soloists (the ensembles often sound a bit like the John Kirby Sextet), and constructs a set of enjoyable music that is heartily recommended to fans of small-group swing. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/i-saw-stars-mw0000026865

New York Swing consists of pianist John Bunch, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, and bassist Jay Leonhart, while the group worked with more than one drummer during their existence. On this 1993 session, Dennis Mackrel rounds out the group. The music is drawn exclusively from the Jerome Kern songbook, starting with a breezy, playful arrangement of "The Song Is You." But while the group plays a number of time-tested standards, including "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Pick Yourself Up," "All the Things You Are," and "Yesterdays," all with a freshness that belies the vintage of these songs and the numerous times they have been recorded by jazz musicians, it is some of the less familiar tunes that especially stand out. The leisurely waltz "I Dream Too Much" and the shimmering ballad "Remind Me" are worthy of greater exploration, too. Pizzarelli's guitar is prominent throughout the date, though Bunch and Leonhart are capable soloists as well, with the veteran Mackrel focusing primarily on keeping time. This is one of the better releases in producer Sonny Lester's series of budget releases that have appeared on various labels.By Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/plays-the-music-of-jerome-kern-mw0000234669

Several well-known jazz musicians have used string quartets to complement their performances over the decades, and many have come up with resultant syrupy mixes drowning individuality via over-production. Thankfully, this collaboration between legitimate jazz string players and legendary veteran guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli does not suffer from sucrose saturation, as these sessions were conceived and played with large amounts of taste, class, and substance. Cellist Jesse Levy, violist Valerie Levy, and violinists Aaron Weinstein and Sara Caswell all are very capable of swinging this program of standards along quite well, while Pizzarelli's seven-string amplified or acoustic guitar has more than enough fuel to keep the songs moving along in a interesting manner without forcing or dragging them into a saccharine morass. Bassist Jerry Bruno, a longtime collaborator of Pizzarelli, is added to five cuts, while the repertoire includes American popular songs, works of Duke Ellington, legitimate Spanish classical works, and the music of George M. Smith. This is Pizzarelli's seventh recording for the Arbors label as a leader, and his 30th project for them overall, proof of his endurance and continuing interest in making good music consistently through the decades of his golden years.

The technique of counterpoint between Pizzarelli and the strings crops up on the fun, '30s hot jazz-flavored Smith composition "Test Pilot," while the other Smith number, "Slow Burning," has the leader and Bruno conversing with the strings replying in slight refrains. Employing mainly the solo format, Pizzarelli's take of "It's Easy to Remember" is a ballad, deepened by the late-arriving strings sadly agreeing that separation is inevitable, while the short closer, "Last Night When We Were Young," has the guitarist pulling out harmonic chord flourishes of pensive introspection. Duke Ellington's music is lovingly interpreted in a 12-minute medley where Pizzarelli bends bluesy notes and chords, and does a polite version of "Prelude to a Kiss" alongside second guitarist Frank Vignola.

Federico Torroba's Sonatina in two movements is a classical bolero waltz, with a changed up George Gershwin Americana-styled second part, while Tarantella Opus 87a is a lithe Italian chamber piece in 2/4 instead of the typical 6/8 time. Bouncy, upbeat, and happy, "Wabash One More Time" is the best swinger, while Pizzarelli's "Boots Blues" is a straightforward, easygoing tune, with help from Vignola and solos by both the exceptional violinists. This CD is a pleasant listening experience that yields more upon additional playings, best heard with significant others or ideally at dinner. It is also another fine effort in the long and illustrious career of one of the truly great jazz guitarists of all time.By Michael G.Nastos  http://www.allmusic.com/album/so-hard-to-forget-mw0000801885.

Ruby Braff - I Hear Music

Ruby Braff has compiled an album of sheer pleasure in quintet work. His well shaped cornet sound, and the interplay of the instruments through each cut is a shining example of mastery of pacing and a sense of timing. Within each of the cuts is a conversation between the instruments where each one says their version of the melody in turn. Cut 2, a medley of “Chicago” and “My Kind of Town” also has hints of Loesser’s “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Other fascinating takes on classic tunes include “Baby, Won’t You Please Come Home,” “Wouldn’t it be Loverly” and “I Hear Music.”

Through.” Guest Soloist Daryl Sherman makes the song with a vocal that conveys the message that is laced through this beautiful piece. Braff says in a quote from the liner notes that the lyrics were written the way you hear them because the song had the feel of the final piece for a club band. The result is a lyrically simple, yet elegant piece of work... an album that is well worth th time, particularly for those who favor smooth cornet work.By AAJ Staff

This second acoustic recording featuring the Gerry Beaudoin Trio with jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli and mandolin titan David Grisman was " ..submitted for consideration for a Grammy nomination." Award winning jazz guitarist Gerry Beaudoin, (1992 National Association of Independent Record Distributors Award for best jazz recording and 1993 and 1995 Cadence Magazine Editors Choice Award)has performed on over 22 recordings in his career. A guitarists guitarist Gerry has performed or recorded with the cream of jazz and blues guitarists including Duke Robillard, Howard Alden, John and Bucky Pizzarelli, Jimmy Bruno, Jack Wilkins, Ronnie Earl, Hubert Sumlin, and rock guitar legend turned jazz guitarist Jay Geils from the J.Geils Band. He is also a featured performer on the Mel Bay Productions DVD,Cafe Benedetto. Gerry was recently contracted by Hal Leonard Publishing to write a book/CD project on acoustic jazz guitar.

A chance meeting with mandolinist David Grisman in 1990 led to their 1992 all acoustic recording, Minor Swing, with Duke Robillard sitting in on second guitar. Just Among Friends is the follow up to that first recording and jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli lent his talents to this recording. To quote David Grisman" ..Gerry Beaudoin is one of the finest guitarists and composers I know. I am looking forward to more musical adventures with Gerry and his trio in the future." The Boston Globe called Gerry ".." A swing guitar master." and blues guitar legend Duke Robillard stated,"..Gerry can play anything from swing to bop and is one hell of a blues guitarist."

Gerry also performs in the concert attraction New Guitar Summit, featuring Gerry with Duke Robillard and Jay Geils. In 2003 Gerry was invited to headline the Ottawa International Jazz Festival.

Ruby Braff and The Flying Pizzarellis - C'est Magnifique!

(8:37) 10. Sometimes I'm Happy
(5:06) 11. Dancing on the Ceiling

Ruby Braff's final studio recording sessions took place with musicians who played with the fire and inspiration required by the demanding cornetist, including familiar faces like guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and drummer Jim Gwinn, though guitarist John Pizzarelli, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, and pianist Ray Kennedy had never before worked with him. Braff's battle with emphysema during the last few years of his life required him to use a wheelchair to get around airports to save his breath for performing, but he is still a powerful presence on this session, around two months before his illness progressed to the point that he could no longer perform.

Like any Braff-led recording, these dates include a selection of tried and true standards that he had played many times throughout his career, all played in swinging fashion and a timeless manner. The opener, "Lulu's Back in Town," is notable as he plays in short bursts, keeping the solos moving through the group to keep all the musicians on their toes, a pattern that follows in most of the selections.

Braff had a knack for reviving forgotten chestnuts like "My Honey's Loving Arms" and "You're a Lucky Guy." "C'est Magnifique" is not one of Cole Porter's best-known works, but Braff's sassy cornet and the campy vocal chorus (which includes a mix of recording session attendees, vocalist/pianist Daryl Sherman, jazz critic Dan Morgenstern, jazz author Ross Firestone, and producer Rachel Domber among them the last three likely making their recording debuts!) add to its appeal. John Pizzarelli's warm, friendly vocals are featured in both "They Can't Take That Away from Me" and "As Time Goes By," which brings up another Braff mandate: when the composer wrote an opening verse to set up a song, it shouldn't be omitted.

This rewarding session closes the career of a marvelous cornetist who kept high standards throughout his career rather than bowing to the demands of record labels, casual jazz fans, or promoters; he is missed but will not be forgotten.By Ken Dryden

Benny Carter - Princeton Concerts (And Beyond) [eight-album series]

"Benny Carter: The Princeton Concerts" is an eight-album series recorded at Carter’s request and until now, unissued. Although he received many distinguished awards (among the National Medal of the Arts, multiple Grammys, and the Kennedy Center Award), it was the doctorate bestowed by Princeton University in 1974 that he especially treasured. Invited and encouraged by Professor Morroe Berger, Carter not only grew close to the school as he led many classes and seminars, but also to the Berger family. Out of that relationship came the monumental biography and cultural history Benny Carter: A Life In American Music (written by Berger, his son Ed, and James Patrick) and the music presented here, recorded by Berger’s son, Ken.

Across these eight albums, Carter leads small groups and one all-star big band comprised of some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. The intensity and interaction with a live audience always brought out the best in Carter and each concert has its own unique moments of inspired improvisation. He effortlessly reveals his mastery of the alto saxophone, the elegance of compositions, and his graciousness as a bandleader in giving generous space to his compatriots.

All, save two, were recorded at Princeton between 1972 and 1983. There is a brilliant 1978 evening captured in Buffalo that features one of the only recordings of the legendary pianist Al Tinney, whose role in the creation of bebop in the early 1940s has long been heralded by historians, but who went largely unrecorded during his long career. The collection set ends chronologically with music from the 90-year-old Carter, playing with astounding freshness and creativity, backed by pianist Chris Neville and bassist Steve LaSpina, who were in Carter’s last band.

Mrs. Hilma Carter has made a gift of this music to the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to support their mission of preserving, promoting, and presenting jazz. It is her wish that the music be made available free of charge, and the museum is placing it across the world’s most popular streaming services. In addition, visitors are always welcome (by appointment) to hear the music at the museum.

This set is a change of pace for singer Banu Gibson, who is usually heard with her New Orleans Hot Jazz Band. Instead, she is accompanied by a quartet comprised of guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, her regular pianist David Boeddinghaus, bassist Bill Huntington, and drummer Jake Hanna, with occasional appearances by trumpeters Connie Jones or Jon-Erik Kellso and Brian Ogilvie on tenor and clarinet. Also a bit different is the repertoire, which, instead of being from the 1920s and '30s, dates primarily from the late '30s and 1940s. What is the same as in the past is the consistent high quality of Gibson's vocals and her enthusiasm and sensitivity for the music. Among the highlights are "I Don't Know Enough About You," "Memphis in June," "Put the Blame on Mame," "There's a Lull in My Life," and "There Will Never Be Another You." ~ Scott Yanow

Recorded on February 13-14, 2002.

Banu Gibson (vocals); Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar); Brian Ogilvie (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Jon-Erik Kellso, Connie Jones (trumpet); David Boeddinhaus (piano); Bill Huntington (guitar, bass); Jake Hanna (drums).

Originally issued by Sonny Lester on his LRC label, this tribute to the music of Cole Porter has reappeared under the Laserlight banner. The album's style recalls the George Shearing groups, with Bucky Pizzarelli's guitar taking on the role that Joe Roland and other vibes players had with Shearing. Under the name New York Swing, the ensemble features Pizzarelli joined by a bevy of top-drawer New York musicians led by pianist John Bunch. This paean to Porter follows other albums by the group honoring other major contributors to the Great American Songbook, like Jerome Kern and Rodgers & Hart. All of these musicians have played these Porter gems before. Rather than making the songs sound old hat and tired because of this close familiarity, the group members have successfully found fresh ways to express their ideas. And that is what makes this composer a favorite among virtually all jazz performers: His work promotes improvisation.

He allows good players to borrow the song, add his or her interpretative imprimatur to it, and then return it intact. "Easy to Love," for example, is presented in a chamber music setting featuring Jay Leonhart's bowed bass. In addition to those customary Porter gems, there are also a few songs that are not so often heard, like "Where Have You Been," which he wrote for an appropriately titled musical The New Yorkers. These are given the same high level of respectful treatment by the group as the more famous Porter material. With nary a bad track in the set, this album of outstanding small group performing is highly recommended. ~ Dave Nathan  http://www.allmusic.com/album/new-york-swing-cole-porter-mw0000280391

Consisting of pianist John Bunch, guitarist John Pizzarelli and bassist Jay Leonhart, New York Swing is an acoustic trio that pretty much lives up to its name all three are New York-based, and they favor what is essentially '40s-type swing. The trio uses the same combination of instruments as the Nat King Cole Trio of the '40s (piano, guitar, and bass, but no drums), and their repertoire is pretty much what one would have expected from a swing-playing small group of that era. Enjoying a nice rapport on these intimate live performances (all of them from a Caribbean "jazz cruise" aboard the S.S. Norway), the trio turns its attention to the music of Benny Goodman ("Benny's Bugle," "Wholly Cats"), Duke Ellington (the lovely "All Too Soon"), Rodgers & Hart ("Have You Met Miss Jones?," "Nobody's Heart Belongs to Me"), and others with pleasing results. Although neither earth-shattering nor terribly original, this is a decent, if conventional, CD that lovers of small-group swing will enjoy. ~ Alex Henderson  http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-at-the-96-floating-jazz-festival-mw0000039314

John Pizzarelli salutes composer Richard Rodgers with this songbook including a dozen of his works. The vocalist/guitarist is accompanied by his trio, with Larry Fuller replacing Ray Kennedy, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, and drummer Tony Tedesco. Pizzarelli adds a personal touch to "I Like to Recognize the Tune" by altering Lorenz Hart's lyrics a bit, while also scatting up a storm in unison with his guitar. Bucky Pizzarelli is an added guest and soloist for "It's Easy to Remember," an intimate duet with the vocalist playing rhythm. Cesar Camargo Mariano takes over at the piano for the breezy bossa nova setting of "Happy Talk." Arranger Don Sebesky wrote the charts for the six tracks and a quartet of brass and reeds, highlighted by the snappy scoring of "The Lady Is a Tramp," recalling Pizzarelli's previous Telarc salute to Frank Sinatra (Dear Mr. Sinatra, in which he trades fours scatting with each of the horns). This release is a little short in the CD era, clocking in at just over 43 minutes, but there's never a dull moment.~ Ken Dryden https://www.allmusic.com/album/with-a-song-in-my-heart-mw0000793387

Marlene Ver Planck is a perfect person to interpret the lyrics of Johnny Mercer because she has both a beautiful voice and a straightforward approach. The original LP had 16 selections and found the singer accompanied by pianist Tony Monte, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Butch Miles in 1978. Ten years later to fill out the CD reissue, the same cast returned to record five additional songs. The performances are quite concise (only four of the 21 pieces are over three minutes) but each is long enough to get its point across. Highlights include "I Remember You," "Early Autumn," "Skylark," "Something's Gotta Give," "I Thought About You" and "Love's Got Me in a Lazy Mood." On this superb recording, the supremely gifted and surprisingly eclectic Danish artist Jacob Fischer has chosen to interpret pieces by fellow guitarists. In recent years, Fischer has been identified with the Django Reinhardt«s tradition, and several of the songs in this well-chosen set are by Reinhardt or evoke his aura. But Fischer«s personal take on Reinhardt, as well as his inclusion of works by Jimmy Raney, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, and others suggests that the guitarist draws on a much more varied musical palette. Jazz fans should be grateful to him and the rest of this group for creating music that reinforces the timelessness, artistic honesty, variety, vitality, and continued creative potential of small-group swing. From the album notes by Ed Berger, who retired in 2011 after more than thirty years at the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies to pursue freelance writing and photography. He is the author of biographies of Benny Carter and George Duvivier, and is currently writing a book about trumpeter Joe Wilder.

Buckskin , the name of the CD, was the childhood nickname of Bucky Pizzarelli, then 91, one of the greatest legends and dean of jazz, specialized in the American 7-string guitar and owner of a unique style in the instrument school, coming from George Van Eps, and the jazz swing of the 6-string guitar by Freddy Green and Charlie Christian. Bucky accompanied Benny Goodman, Julie London, Frank Sinatra to Paul McCartney, also making theatrical performances of Stephen Sondheim's shows. On television he played at Johnny Carson and Skitch Henderson. He recorded as a studio musician many hits from the 60's pop and jazz records with guitarists George Barnes, Tal Farlow and Wes Montgomery, among others, before starting a prolific phonographic partnership with saxophonist Zoot Sims.

Produced by bassist Martin Pizzarelli and co-produced by Brazilian guitarist Ricardo Baldacci (who also participates in playing and singing), the album is a tribute and a celebration of Bucky's music and the joy of playing, around whom everyone orbits in these records and always .The swing repertoire band is based on the drums of Tony Tedesco, a constant figure in the films of Woody Allen (as well as Bucky), the acoustic bass of producer Martin and the piano of Larry Fuller, with the participation of the virtuoso of the clarinet and saxophonist Ken Peplowski. Manu shares the vocals of most tracks with Ed Laub, who regularly performs in duo with Bucky on the 7-string guitar and is one of the most expressive voices today, reminiscent of Arthur Prysock, in addition to being the author of the seminal CDSoft Guitar , tribute to a great connoisseur and lover of Brazilian music, Kenny Rankin.

Martin and Bucky (who recorded in Tom Brasil's Terra Brasilis ) read Tom Jobim's bossa-jazz ( Wave , Estrada Branca ), with Duduka da Fonseca's drums, Marc Sganga's nylon guitar and the participation of a of the greatest Brazilian singers, Maucha Adnet, who was part of the vocal ensemble Céu da Boca and Banda Nova by Tom Jobim, along with Danilo Caymmi, Manu's most frequent partner. In the instrumental repertoire, plus a solo guitar medley by Bucky ( Easy to Remember and This Nearly Was Mine, both by Richard Rodgers), a pearl from Bucky, Take Ten , soloed by Ken Peplowski in the fashion of him and Zoot Simms, and accompanied by Manu's vocalise, in addition to Manu's own guitar in his Um Abraço nos Pizza , dedicated to the Pizarellis (originally recorded on the CD Mané Mandou, with a brass arrangement by Lincoln Olivetti). In Canto Casual , John Pizzarelli's album commemorating the 50th anniversary of Sinatra and Tom's LP, John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey took advantage of Manu's verses in an authorial song, hence the opportunity for the tribute

In the American repertoire, frequent numbers of the duo Bucky - Ed Laub ( Bennies / Pennies From Heaven , Love Walked In ), less recorded songs (Caroline , by Randy Newman, Fishing Pole , in a rare version with the lyrics, in addition to the famous whistle on American TV) and two pearls by the brilliant Brian Gari ( Yvette and Slow Moving Sam ). Highlight for the work of the sound engineer Bill Moss, who gives linearity and spontaneity to the repertoire, of a team and comprehensive and ambitious musical style of the project, making the hearing a ride for the ears and hearts. http://manulafer.com.br/discografia/solo/buckskin-pt/

As of 1998, when this CD was released, Scott Hamilton had recorded over 30 albums as a leader for Concord. Although all are quite worthwhile, the swing tenor's consistency and unchanged style since the 1970s have resulted in a certain sameness and predictability to his recordings. This release, however, definitely stands apart from the crowd, for it is a set of tenor/guitar duets that Hamilton performs with Bucky Pizzarelli. A tribute to Zoot Sims (one of Hamilton's early influences), this is a very successful outing. Pizzarelli's mastery of the seven-string guitar allows him to play basslines behind solos, so one never misses the other instruments. Although the duo performs a variety of standards, there are also some lesser-known pieces among the highlights including the title cut, Al Cohn's "Two Funky People," the Sims/Cohn collaboration "Morning Fun," and the obscure "In the Middle of a Kiss."

Both Hamilton and Pizzarelli sound inspired in this format, stretching themselves while always swinging. Pizz had recorded a duo album with Sims back in 1973, and Zoot also cut a full set with guitarist Joe Pass a couple years later. This excellent, slightly offbeat outing is on the same level as those two and is highly recommended to fans of swinging mainstream jazz. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/red-door-remember-zoot-sims-mw0000042967

For more than six decades, the legendary Bucky Pizzarelli has had a stellar career. “The complete jazz musician”, he was a fixture in jazz and the studios since the early ‘50s. The list of big bands and vocalists with whom Bucky has performed and recorded reads like a veritable Who's Who of Jazz. One of the era's most solid rhythm players, Pizzarelli was in high demand, playing and touring with Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims, Bud Freeman, and Stephane Grappelli, and, later, recording with George Van Eps, Carl Kress and George Barnes. His superior mastery of the seven-string guitar is unparalleled. The beloved guitarist has developed a very personal style that sets him apart. At 71, cornetist Ruby Braff was still in prime form at the time of this interesting project. Braff decided to try something different so he utilized clarinetist Kenny Davern, three guitarists (Howard Alden, Bucky Pizzarelli and Jon Wheatley), two bassists (Michael Moore and Marshall Wood) and drummer Jim Gwin. The unusual six-piece rhythm section is well featured with each of the players somehow staying out of each other's way and the three guitars often emulating a piano.

Braff sounds fine on such numbers as "Avalon," an emotional medley of two Charlie Chaplin-associated melodies ("Smile" and "La Violettera"), "Jive at Five" and a pair of the cornetist's originals. The closing "Born To Lose" is a frivolity with a so-so Braff vocal (why do older trumpeters feel compelled to sing?) but otherwise this is a successful mainstream effort. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/born-to-play-mw0000048581

One of many impromptu sessions staged in 1977 for Lionel Hampton's Who's Who in Jazz label, this recording features the basic band of Hampton on vibes, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass, Oliver Jackson on drums, and Candido Camero on congas that is common to many of the albums, plus, in this case, Dexter Gordon (an alumnus of the Hampton big band) on tenor and soprano saxophone. The songs are mostly standards like "They Say That Falling in Love Is Wonderful" and "I Should Care," and Hampton and Gordon are given extended solo time in the relaxed arrangements, with Pizzarelli and Jones also taking occasional turns. The charm of all the 1977 Who's Who sessions is their intimacy: they sound more like something overheard after the final set in a club than formal recordings. This is one of the better ones. ~ William Ruhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/album/lionel-hampton-with-dexter-gordon-mw0000188260

Lee Wiley was a superior singer whose style feel between swing and cabaret. She gave straightforward interpretations of lyrics yet also had a strong sense of swing. Discouraged by the music business, Wiley retired in 1958 when she was still in her prime. She made a brief return during 1971-72 when she recorded a final album and performed at the first Newport in New York Jazz Festival. The latter concert has been released for the initial time on this Audiophile CD and is Wiley's final recording. Accompanied by cornetist Bobby Hackett, pianist Teddy Wilson, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Don Lamond, Lee Wiley sounds in surprisingly good form. Although her voice had deepened a little, she is quite recognizable and had not declined at all. Before a loving crowd (that sounds quite delighted to get the rare chance to see her), Wiley sings 11 songs. Best are "Indiana," "You're Lucky to Me," an emotional "Come Sunday" and "Sugar." Although she forgets the words at one point on "Manhattan" (a surprise request from George Wein), Lee Wiley does quite well and exits on top. The remainder of this CD is comprised of ten songs recorded at a rehearsal in 1952 with Wein himself on piano, bassist John Field and drummer Marquis Foster. The trumpeter is listed as Johnny Windhurst but I would opt for Bobby Hackett. Although quite informal (and some of the renditions are under two minutes), this rehearsal is an important addition to the relatively slim discography of the charming Lee Wiley. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-carnegie-hall-concert-mw0000913043
