After co-founding renowned acapella group Manhattan Transfer, Erin Dickins established herself as one of the leading studio singers in New York, touring and recording with many notable artists including Leonard Cohen, Bette Midler, James Taylor, The Talking Heads and James Brown.

Following her hit album ‘Java Jive’ (Dot Time Records), Dickins returns with ‘Vignettes’, an outstanding new body of work that captures the singer’s diversity, moving through a range of styles and genres and demonstrating the true range of her vocal artistry.

This magnetic new album features a wealth of talented collaborators, including producer John Lissauer, famous for his work on both Al Jarreau’s first recordings and Leonard Cohen’s most successful albums (including the iconic track ‘Hallelujah’), along with a plethora of scores for film and TV. ~By Peter Butler

“…Dickins’ vast experience allows her to feel at ease singing different styles … deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.“ JazzTimes

HEADS OF STATE, FEATURING FOUR OF THE MOST RESPECTED and admired jazz artists of our time releases its first recording Search for Peace. A band over 50 years in the making, Gary Bartz, Larry Willis, Buster Williams, and Al Foster had performed together countless times in different combinations and contexts over their storied careers, but it wasn’t until September 2014 that they appeared as a quartet.

The occasion that night was a tribute to McCoy Tyner, and the results were so inspired and the response so overwhelming that they knew right away they had something worth keeping. As pianist Larry Willis puts it, “I don’t think there are any bands that are doing quite what we’re doing right now.” Now, their unique chemistry and musicianship is documented on Search for Peace. It features selections by John Coltrane (“Impressions”), Jackie McLean (“Capuchin Swing”), Benny Carter (“Summer Serenade”), Billy Strayhorn (“Lotus Blossom”) and, of course, the moving title track by Tyner (“Search for Peace”) Gary Bartz contributes two compositions (“Uncle Bubba” which Gary performed with McCoy and “Soulstice”) and there are two standards (“Crazy She Calls Me” and “I Wish I Knew” which Tyner famously recorded with Coltrane).

It is a well-chosen and balanced set, but the selections are somewhat beside the point; this all-star quartet makes everything sound like magic.

Celebrating 100 years of a UK National Treasure with brand new orchestral versions of her most beloved songs. A true icon, Vera Lynn reaches her 100th Birthday on the 20th March 2017. To celebrate this milestone, the newly recorded album, Vera 100, features Vera Lynn’s utterly distinctive original vocals set to completely new re-orchestrated versions of her most beloved songs. This technical wizardry has, for the first time, allowed full orchestral accompaniments to transform not only her most memorable and morale-boosting hits that sustained Britons through the wartime years, but some recently unearthed, rare recordings – all presented in sumptuous, up-to-the-minute sound. Vera’s vocal on the lead track, Sailing, has not been heard for 35 years. The album also features several duet partners including Alfie Boe, Alexander Armstrong , Aled Jones and the RAF Squadronaires.

From the first listen one is caught by this round sound, subtle, proper to the great jazz guitarists…

Magnificent subtleties, nuances in touch, excellent musicality is served by a return to the swing and the melody that surpasses the flawless virtuosity of the guitar leader. From album to album, here the 5th as leader, Yves Brouqui is in the line of Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell…

His 10 years stay in New York City, particularly at the Small’s where he met the top of the East Coast jazz scene, allowed him to assert his play and style. An album that all the lovers of the 6 strings must acquire and keep preciously on the “Best of” shelf. As for the rhythm that accompanies it … Extremely solid! ~Christian Grimauld

Charlie Byrd was teamed up with Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis (along with bassist Joe Byrd and drummer John Rae) for this rather exciting concert. While Ellis and Kessel have three unaccompanied duets, the inclusion of Byrd (thought of as a Brazilian specialist rather than a bopper) is the wild card that makes this set a major success. While Byrd is excellent on his features "Charlie's Blues" and "O Barquinho," it is the three stomps featuring all the guitarists ("Undecided," "Topsy" and "Benny's Bugle") that are most memorable. ~Scott Yanow

Born on March 21, 1918, Margaret Marian Turner began to play the piano around the age of three. After an unsatisfying attempt at studying the violin formally, Marian eventually found her way to the famous Guildhall School of Music where she studied piano and composition. After leaving Guildhall to perform in a four-piano vaudeville act, she met her future husband, Jimmy McPartland, while touring in USO shows during World War II.

After marrying cornetist Jimmy McPartland and moving to the United States, Marian enjoyed much success on the American jazz scene over the next several years performing with her own trio, as a soloist, and as a recording artist. In 1978, Marian began to host her own radio program for National Public Radio and South Carolina Educational Radio: Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz. Piano Jazz is one of the longest running weekly programs on NPR, featuring a wide range of guests--from legendary jazz artists to fledgling talents. When Marian's not in the studio recording an episode of Piano Jazz or a new album, she might be found performing live gigs with her trio or offering master classes for eager young music students. After celebrating her 90th birthday in 2008, Marian released her latest album, Twilight World. Marian died on 20 August 2013.

As many of you know, I started Postmodern Jukebox out of a small NYC apartment with nothing but a dream, a camera, and some talented friends. Since then, the project has grown into an internationally-touring phenomenon and major entertainment platform that has launched the careers of many – something of an “SNL for singers.” Along the way, I’ve met countless fans, musicians, and artists that have shown me inspiring levels of support for this project, and for REAL, LIVE MUSIC in general.

That’s why I am pleased to announce that I’ve partnered with Concord Records to bring you the first release on the newly-formed Postmodern Jukebox Records – titled, “Postmodern Jukebox : The Essentials.” The album features the 18 most essential tracks in the PMJ library – everything from our viral smash hits to some of our most vocally jaw-dropping performances from our many star cast members, to our most inspired vintage transformations. It is the perfect soundtrack to class up any event (it even comes with an insert booklet full of the popular vintage cocktail recipes), and the perfect start to building a Postmodern Jukebox collection of great performances. ~Scott

Widely regarded as one of the most respected and sought-after musicians in the music world, Brazilian-born Eumir Deodato has racked up 16 platinum records to his credit as artist, arranger or producer with combined sales of well over 25 million records in the USA alone. His discography, including compilations and all his work as arranger, producer and keyboardist, surpasses 450 albums. He has also had the honor of performing with the St. Louis Symphony (which backed him on his superb Artistry album), the Cincinnati Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestra di Musica Leggera dell’Unione Musicisti di Roma. In addition, several artists over the years have covered his songs, including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Sarah Vaughan and The Emotions to mention just a few. And yet, in spite of all of his varied triumphs, honors and distinctions over the years, the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist will probably forever be associated with one song – his innovative rendition of Richard Strauss’ classical opus Also Sprach Zarathustra (or more commonly known as the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey).

That single compelling song, which first appeared on his 1973 debut album for CTI Prelude, sold at least five million copies and earned Deodato his first Grammy Award, instantly moved him to international stardom and setting a course for his remarkable ongoing career in music. Thirty years later, that same tune has found its way into the repertoire of the jam band Phish, a testament to Deodato’s enduring influence.

Recorded shortly after he left the security of Phil Woods' Quintet, pianist Hal Galper's Concord CD is a thoughtful and relaxed outing for his trio. "The Lamp Is Low" gets a groove by bassist Todd Coolman reminiscent of Ahmad Jamal's treatment of "Poinciana," with Galper not even hinting at its melody until five minutes into the performance.

"It Never Was You" is quite somber, while "Bright Moments" is optimistic and the only uptempo piece, "Hey There," finds the pianist displaying a very light touch a la Wynton Kelly. The other selections emphasize close communication between Galper, Coolman and drummer Steve Ellington. A February 1985 recording in a Copenhagen studio, Questions finds Canadian free jazz pianist Paul Bley paired with the Danish rhythm section of bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Aage Tangaard. For a one-off recording session assumedly recorded with a minimum of rehearsal, the three mesh quite well, although the interplay between Bley and Lundgaard in the middle section of the opening "Lovely" probably was not meant to sound as hesitant and atonal as it does. Wisely, the album then moves into a series of solos by Bley, "Adventure" parts one through four. Melodic but abstract, with long pauses and unexpected glissandi, these solos sound almost like Bill Evans might have after heavy exposure to Brian Eno. The rhythm section comes back in for the gently swinging "Beautiful," then lays out again for another pair of Bley solos. Returning for the first three sections of the four-part "Here and Gone," Lundgaard and Tangaard seem perfectly attuned with Bley's fragmented, impressionistic style. (Part two of this composition has nearly as much silence as it does music.) The rhythm section's restrained, subtle support on these tracks is a perfect setting for Bley, who moves even further into quasi-ambient soloing on the seven-minute closer, "Fanfare." The more normal sounding trio recordings towards the front of the disc sound almost out of place, but the rest of Questions is Bley at his tranquil but never placid best. ~ Stewart Mason http://www.allmusic.com/album/questions-mw0000192601

Jeremy Pelt - Make Noise!

Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt occupies an enviably open-minded space in the modern jazz landscape. A capable traditionalist, Pelt has built his career around making acoustic post-bop, with increasing forays into electrified, electronic-tinged fusion. His mutable choices keep you in suspense as a listener you’re never sure what to expect from one album to the next. While there are no such electronic flourishes on Pelt's 2017 effort, the warmly sophisticated Make Noise!, it still pops with much of the same cross-genre creativity he's explored in the past. The album follows his similarly inclined 2016 effort #Jiveculture, which also featured an inventive acoustic sound accented by legendary bassist Ron Carter. This time out, Pelt brings along a slightly less-high-profile, if no less talented, ensemble including pianist Victor Gould, bassist Vicente Archer, drummer Jonathan Barber, and percussionist Jacquelene Acevedo. Together, they take an intimate approach to expansive post-bop that straddles the line between Miles Davis' '60s albums and Terence Blanchard's early-'80s work. Pelt has a broad, enveloping trumpet tone and a knack for laying down highly engaging solos that never hold a listener at arm's length. It's a skill he puts to good use throughout Make Noise! and one complemented by his bandmates, especially pianist Gould, who layers these tracks with a sparkling delicacy reminiscent of the late Mulgrew Miller. Similarly, with Acevedo's kinetic percussion filtered throughout, Make Noise! also has a strong Afro-Latin influence, a vibe especially apparent on the roiling title track and frenetic, salsa-infused "Bodega Social." Equally compelling, "Chateau d'Eau" has a languid, R&B-inflected melody set to a midtempo Afro-Latin groove. Elsewhere, Pelt pushes toward harmonically nuanced modalism, offering a fittingly elegiac and noir-ish tribute to the departed pop icon on "Prince," and evincing the angular, classically influenced style of Black Codes-era Wynton Marsalis on "Cry Freedom." While much of Pelt's work fits nicely into the jazz canon, he clearly has an open ear for melody, a gift he exercises on "Your First Touch...", which sounds like a Leonard Cohen song reworked as a sensuous jazz ballad. Ultimately, Make Noise! continues to reveal Pelt's maturation into a confident artist, comfortable enough with his place in the jazz tradition to keep subtly pushing the edges of audience expectation. ~ Matt Collar http://www.allmusic.com/album/make-noise!-mw0003006526
