Like many titles released in 2021, Dan Siegel's Faraway Place is a product of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was conceived and recorded mostly in isolation by a stellar cadre of musicians: drummers Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, and Omari Williams, saxophonist Eric Marienthal, trumpeter/trombonist Lee Thornburg, guitarist Allen Hinds, acoustic bassist Brian Bromberg, electric bassists Abraham Laboriel and Dwayne "Smitty" Smith, and percussionist Lenny Castro. Brazilian vocalist Rogerio Jardim also appears on two tracks. Siegel composed the music in isolation and attended two socially distanced sessions in a Los Angeles studio with Gadd and Colaiuta. He sent the finished rhythm tracks with piano demos to his cast and had them add their parts, then added finished piano, accordion, organ, and other keyboards to frame these 11 short to mid-length jazz tunes, offered in a variety of styles. "Old School" commences with a funky soul-jazz vamp à la the Cadet era Ramsey Lewis Trio, appended by Castro's bubbling congas around the piano and grooving horns with a chart as fine as Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder." Siegel layers a B-3 organ under his meaty piano fills and accents before Hinds adds funky wah-wah guitar atop Bromberg's bassline as the jam begins to cook. "Sentimental Story" is a midtempo ballad framed by Castro's fluid percussion and Gadd's intricate brushwork. Hinds' chord voicings and Bromberg's resonant bassline allow Siegel to explore a melody that nods to the influence of Vince Guaraldi.

"Tried and True" commences with a slippery, funky piano groove but quickly evolves as the horn section, bassline, and lead guitar lines build a groove recalling Gaucho-period Steely Dan. "Something You Said" is the first of four tunes to feature Siegel's accordion playing. Here it whispers under the shimmering piano that crisscrosses folk and pop lyricism as Hinds and the rhythm section dance around them. Siegel's solo expands the tune into post-bop territory. "Curves Ahead" with Williams on drums and Smith on electric bass, weds the vintage soul-jazz to Latin and contemporary jazz with a smoking electric piano solo and wafting organ. The brief "Your Smile" weds a classical chamber piece with Baroque overtones to samba. Only two-minutes long, it features Jardim's airy, wordless vocals atop piano, upright bass, bassoon, English horn, and viola. Hinds' pulsing wah-wah guitar and Laboriel's simmering electric bassline underscore the prog rock-cum-contemporary jazz groove that colors "Looking Up." Colaiuta's rolling breaks and accents frame Siegel's crystalline chords and canny right-hand fills before he delivers a downright funky solo. Closer "Once Again," offers stylish contemporary post-bop with just the hint of a Latin tinge as Siegel walks the line between swing and soul and Bromberg digs deep into wood to extract the groove with the elegant syncopation of Colaiuta. Faraway Place stands with Siegel's best work for its complex yet utterly accessible approach to rhythmic interplay and kaleidoscopic harmonic invention, all rendered in relatively brief but beautifully arranged compositions.~ Thom Jurek https://www.allmusic.com/album/faraway-place-mw0003544032

Brian Bromberg, a highly versatile bassist who can play straight-ahead jazz, fusion, smooth, and adventurous music with equal skill, is a masterful tapper too. On this rockish fusion set, most of the selections have just Bromberg joined by drummer Joel Taylor. Bromberg utilizes an overdubbed piccolo bass like a guitar (so one would swear this was a guitar-driven power trio) in addition to his standard electric bass.

Keyboardist Dan Siegel is on two numbers and drummer Tom McCauley subs for Taylor on one song, but otherwise all of the music is made by the two musicians. The results are nine rock-oriented originals played with plenty of spirit, passion, and fun in addition to the expected virtuosity.~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/metal-mw0000266459

A culmination of influences from an illustrious career spanning 25-plus years, Departure is the latest studio recording from pianist Dan Siegel. He brilliantly blends his melodic and rhythmic pop sensibilities with his traditional jazz roots and offers up an amazing acoustic vision of original compositions. This CD is graceful, noble, and reflective, since it transcends categorization as it speaks to earlier times of adult instrumental acoustic music with classic themes that were influenced by the song, its melodies, and its virtuosic musicians. Among Siegel's invitees are several contemporary jazz greats including Brian Bromberg, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Lenny Castro, with special guest performances by saxophonist Bob Sheppard, guitarists Norman Brown and Grant Geissman, and vocalist Bill Cantos. Produced by Siegel and Bromberg, this 11-track offering is ripe with themes that move, groove and appeal to your sense of jazz. The emotionally gripping opening track"Across the Sea" and "Street Talk," which offers the vintage Siegel sound, defines the true stripped down essence that is Departure. The exotic string ensemble heard on "Mosaic" serves to enhance the darker emotional piano and saxophone textures. "Castles in the Sand" features Vince Guaraldi's inimitable influences while "Alone" is a soft-spoken ballad that includes light percussive textures and an irresistible tenderness from saxophonist Bob Sheppard. Overall, Departure is organic, in-the-pocket, and should be in your collection of great piano jazz records.

Smooth jazz keyboardist Dan Siegel has been helping to shape the genre since his recording debut in 1980. Born in Seattle and raised in Eugene, OR, Siegel started taking piano lessons at age eight and was fronting a rock band at 12. After attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he received a degree in composition from the University of Oregon and began recording his own works. Soon thereafter, well-known independent jazz label Inner City Records signed the young keyboardist, releasing 1980's Nite Ride, which featured guitarist Lee Ritenour. Siegel's second album for Inner City, 1981's The Hot Spot, was more successful and spent ten weeks in the Top Ten of Billboard's jazz chart. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue film and television work, as well as a more active recording career. Spending half of the decade composing TV and film scores as well as releasing several albums of varying interest, he signed with Epic in 1986 and began moving away from the ailing jazz fusion scene and into the adult contemporary jazz sound that he had been toying with all along. Highlights of this era include 1994's worldbeat-influenced Hemispheres and the urban-flavored Clairvoyance, released in 1998. Siegel spent the 1990s recording for a variety of labels, working with some of the bigger names in smooth jazz (Boney James, Larry Carlton, John Patitucci), and leading the hard bop combo Birds of a Feather. In 2000, Legacy Recordings released a greatest hits compilation called Along the Way: The Best of Dan Siegel. ~ Zac Johnson https://www.allmusic.com/artist/dan-siegel-mn0000566054/biography

Almost a quarter century after his debut, Dan Siegel remains one of the kings of smooth-as-silk piano smooth jazz. No computer blips or hip-hop samples here. Siegel is such a mellow mood on his first new studio CD in six years that if you're not completely relaxed after his latest, you should probably get your money back. Saxophonists Boney James and Jeff Kashiwa spice things up in solos and as part of a horn section, but their playing enhances the mellowness instead of taking it outside a comfort zone. None of this is bad, of course. On "Just Like That" and the cover track, Siegel's chirpy playing and smooth backbeat are just what my doc might prescribe during the nadir of a hectic work week. Siegel steps outside his comfort zone a little with "Between the Lines," laying down some tasty organ grooves, but soon slips back into his mellow groove with "To the Point." He ventures into Yanni territory on the final cut, "Gone, But Not Forgotten," a spiritual and uplifting four minutes of music cinema. Siegel is from the old school, a defining member of the smooth jazz movement who still believes in music's healing and calming attributes. In today's loud world, there's still plenty of room for that. ~ Brian Soergel https://www.allaboutjazz.com/inside-out-dan-siegel-native-language-review-by-brian-soergel.php

Pianist and composer Dan Siegel is an adventurer. After his breakout smooth jazz hits in the 1980s he successfully experimented with genres ranging from new age to film and TV scores and back. Indigo, his 20th album and first in half a decade features ten new compositions which have been painstakingly arranged and performed by a crack cast of players that includes bassist and co-producer Brian Bromberg, saxophonist Bob Sheppard, guitarist Allen Hinds (and Mike Miller on two tracks), Yellowjackets' drummer Will Kennedy, vibist Craig Fundyga, and percussionist Lenny Castro on percussion. Two different brass sections alternate on five cuts. Immediately striking is Indigo's sound. Tracked live in Bromberg's home studio, it is warm, immediate, and full. These are some of Siegel's most imaginative tunes to date: contemporary jazz played in straight-ahead fashion. They are boundary-less, ecompassing elements from several popular genres in a jazz context. Opener "To Be Continued" contains elements of contemporary classical crossover, pop, and even Siegel's film music the brass section utilizes euphonium, French horn, and flügelhorns. But there is a palpable, syncopated groove in the pianist's harmonically inventive solo. The title cut begins with resonator and electric guitars in a blues groove, as Siegel's piano evokes a Ray Charles-like R&B, but as it unfolds with bright brass and a country-funk backbeat, the tune moves in several directions simultaneously and could only be encompassed by jazz. The guitar in "Beyond" actually evokes a pedal steel, but the interplay between piano, upright bass, and acoustic guitars is elegant, graceful, and emotionally deep.

"If Ever" contains a lithe Latin tinge and a rich, expansive brass chart; its melody is impeccably crafted and contains excellent solos by Siegel and Sheppard on soprano. The R&B flavor in "Spur of the Moment" is offset by intricate counterpoint and lyric exchanges, the soloists atop the brassy, funky groove. "Consider This" is smoother and sweeter; it's soulful and cosmopolitan with Siegel adding a B-3 in support of his piano; Castro's percussion adds a Caribbean flavor. Closer "Endless" is positively euphoric, it's one of the finest moments here, due in no small part to Bromberg's knockout, fleet-fingered, woody pizzicato solo. Indigo is holistic and seamless in its articulation of contemporary jazz an extension in popular music and jazz's Big Tent tradition. More than this, though, it is a glorious, personal, panoramic statement from an artist who, after 35 years, is at the height of his creative powers. ~ Thom Jurek https://www.allmusic.com/album/indigo-mw0002820191
