Antonio Zambrini, pianist and composer from Milan, has drawn the attention of the critics with his cd ""Antonia e altre canzoni", 1998, Splasc(h) Records; this was favourably reviewed on several specialized magazines, in Italy and abroad, and was selected as one of the best Italian first works by the jury of the "Django d'or" prize, patronized by the French and the Italian musical critics. Thanks to its success, on "Musica Jazz" magazine (January '99), Antonio Zambrini was classified by critics at the second position in the 1998 list of the best new talents of italian jazz.

His second cd "Forme semplici", 2000, and the last one, "Quartetto", 2001, were furtherly voted in several categories in the critics referendum on "Musica Jazz", where Zambrini was confirmed as one of the best emergent talents also for the years 2000 and 2001.

Recently, Zambrini has been invited as guest star in different musical broadcastings by Radio3 RAI ("Invenzione a due voci", "Jazzclub", "Radio3suite"). His piece "Crevalcore", from the cd "Antonia...", is present also in the last compilation of the most representative signature tunes of Radio Popolare (Raccolta differenziata, Sensible Records). His piece "Antonia" has been inserted in the tribute cd for the 20 years of "Le Scimmie" jazz club, side by side with pieces by musicians like Enrico Rava, Paul Motian, Franco D'Andrea, Massimo Urbani...

His compositions are performed by some important new jazz musicians like Stefano Bollani, in Italy, and John Law, an emergent talented English pianist, who has even dedicated to Zambrini his last Cd "The Moment".

Antonio Zambrini studied guitar, flute, composition and piano; he graduated in Choir Conduction at the Conservatorio of Padua and in Jazz Music at the Conservatorio of Parma. He studied at the Jazz Music Seminars in Siena both as flutist and pianist, but he eventually preferred piano for pursuing his musical career. He performed with different groups in several Italian jazz clubs and festivals, like "Clusone Jazz" (1995, '97 and '99), the "Jazz Italiano" Festival at Finale Ligure ('95), "Saudades" in Milan ('95), Varese Festival at Giardini Estensi in '95 and 2002, the "Parma Jazz-Frontiere" International Festival in '96, "Eurojazz" at Ivrea in '97, Berchidda Festival in '97, "Estate Jazz" in Cagliari ('97), the '98 Musical Season of the Piccolo Regio Theatre in Turin, the '98 and '99 Villa Celimontana International Festival in Rome, JVC Festival in Turin ('98), "Ah Hum Jazz Fest", Milan, (2001-2002), "Free" Jazz Festival, Milan (2002), etc.

Among others, he performed with Claudio Fasoli, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Enrico Rava, Mark Murphy, Tiziano Tononi, Gabriele Mirabassi, Emanuele Cisi, Stefano D'Anna, Roberto Bonati, Andrea Dulbecco, Giorgio Licalzi, Bruno De Filippi, Javier Girotto…

He collaborates constantly with the Cineteca Italiana, Milan, for the improvised live sonorization of silent movies festivals.

He teaches in several different music schools; since 1999, he directs a summer course of improvisation and ensemble music by the "Stages Internazionali di Orvieto" (Orvieto International Stages).

In dicember 2002, at Piccolo Teatro Studio in Milan, together with the italian singer Lucia Minetti, Zambrini has composed and performed the music of "Concerto per la pace" (Concerto for peace). In 2003 he was invited to play at Berlin for two festivals: "Italian Jazz player" and "Jazz composers night". His new CD "Due colori" ("Abeat Records") is going to be released.

Konitz is sometimes regarded as the preeminent cool jazz saxophonist, because he performed and recorded with Claude Thornhill, Lennie Tristano (both often cited as important cool jazz proponents of the mid 1940s), and with Miles Davis on his epochal Birth of the Cool, which gave the form its name.

Konitz has also been repeatedly noted as one of the few jazz saxophonists of the late 1940s and 1950s who did not seem imitative of the massively influential Charlie Parker. In the early 1950s, Konitz recorded and toured with Stan Kenton's orchestra.

In 1961, he recorded Motion with Elvin Jones on drums and Sonny Dallas on bass. This spontaneous session, widely regarded as a classic in the cool genre, consisted entirely of standards. The loose trio format aptly featured Konitz's unorthodox phrasing and chromaticism.

In 1967, Konitz recorded The Lee Konitz Duets, a series of duets with various musicians. The duo configurations were often unusual for the period (saxophone and trombone, two saxophones). The recordings drew on very nearly the entire history of jazz, from a Louis Armstrong dixieland number with valve trombonist Marshall Brown to two completely free duos: one with a Duke Ellington associate, violinist Ray Nance, and one with guitarist Jim Hall.

Konitz has been quite prolific, recording dozens of albums as a band leader. He has also recorded or performed with Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Elvin Jones and others.

Antonio Zambrini is esteemed one of the best italian composer. The last three recordings by Antonio Zambrini , “Quartetto”, “Due colori” and “Musica” ( all by Abeat records ) have been of great success either in critics and sales all around many countries. It’s the first time that Antonio Zambrini is recording some songs by other people’s.

To do that he choose the repertoire of Procol Harum, the band from England who, during the ‘60 and ’70 years, created some very well known songs all over the world such as “A Whiter Shade of Pale”, “Homburg”, “Salty Dog”, “Something’s following me” and many more…Elegance of touch, accurate care of choosing notes, deep but peaceful improvisation, predilection of intimate situations, makes Antonio one of the most original pianist of the Italian scene.

In this Cd Zambrini has been supported by the doublebass player Andrea Di Biase , who studied at the Guildhall School of London and by the English drummer Jon Scott. The typical italian mood of Zambrini takes more inspiration from the “British”climate of the rhithmic section.By JazzLoft

Born 1959, Rome, Italy. Playing piano from early childhood, Marcotulli studied classical music at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory before being drawn to Brazilian music. She also began moving onto the fringes of jazz and established a local reputation at first, before becoming well known among contemporary jazz audiences both at home and abroad. This was largely due to playing with musicians such as Chet Baker, Richard Galliano, Jon Christensen, Palle Danielsson, Peter Erskine, Steve Grossman, Joe Henderson, Hélène La Barrière, Joe Lovano, Tony Oxley, Michel Portal, Enrico Rava, Michel Bénita, Aldo Romano and Kenny Wheeler. In 1987 she was nominated for the Best Young Talent award in the Music Jazz Poll and the following year she was a member of Billy Cobham’s band, touring Europe and the USA and appearing on 1989’s Incoming. She spent some time in Sweden, before returning to Italy in the early 90s. In the late 90s, she played the San Remo festival in duo with Pat Metheny and also appeared as a member of a piano trio, with Paul Bley and John Taylor, at the Olympic Theatre of Vicenza.

Among other musicians with whom Marcotulli has worked and sometimes recorded are Sal Nistico, Pino Daniele, Andy Sheppard, Charlie Mariano, Marilyn Mazur, Roberto Gatto, Bob Moses, and she has had a long-term musical relationship with Dewey Redman. Marcotulli has claimed the influence of musicians such as Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and John Coltrane. A highly skilled performer, she chooses to play in a style that derives as much from pop and folk as jazz. In addition to playing in jazz circles, Marcotulli has also composed music for the dance theatre and for films. By AllMusic
