Boston had a strong but greatly underpublicized bop scene in the late '40s. This Hep CD, which adds a previously unreleased session plus one extra cut to the original LP, features pianist/arranger Nat Pierce, altoist Charlie Mariano and trombonist Sonny Truitt both in big bands and combos.

The other personnel is mostly pretty obscure although baritone great Serge Chaloff is showcased on two numbers and there are three fairly straight vocals by Teddi King. The rare studio recordings range in influences from Dizzy Gillespie to Claude Thornhill and the Miles Davis Nonet; highly recommended for bop collectors. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-boston-bust-out-mw0000613971

Personnel: Nat Pierce (piano); Mert Goodspeed (vocals, trombone); Teddi King (vocals); David Chapman , Charlie Mariano (alto saxophone); Randy Henderson, George Hamilton Green (tenor saxophone); George Meyers, Serge Chaloff (baritone saxophone); Lennie Johnson, Bill Adams, Billy Adams, Dud Harvey, Don Stratton, Perry Wilson (trumpet); Sonny Truitt, Joe Laconi, Ace Lane, Bob Carr (trombone); Ralph Burns (piano); Country Joe McDonald, Pete DeRosa (drums).

Baritonist Serge Chaloff, best known as a member of Woody Herman's Second Herd, made a comeback in the mid-'50s after years of drug abuse. Having kicked the habit in his native Boston, he recorded The Fable of Mable in 1954 and this excellent session the following year. Chaloff is heard on a variety of obscure originals plus a couple of standards (including a near-classic "Body and Soul") in a sextet with trumpeter Herb Pomeroy and altoist Boots Mussulli. The ironic part is that, once Chaloff cleaned up his act, he contracted spinal paralysis and died in 1957. However, the baritonist is very much in prime form on this set, which was once only available on CD as part of Mosaic's Serge Chaloff limited-edition box but was reissued by Capitol Jazz in 2006 with three extra tracks. ~Scott Yanow

[4:26] 17. The Fable Of Mabel

The great bebop baritonist Serge Chaloff is featured in two different Boston sessions on this excellent CD. Six selections showcase him in a quintet actually led by altoist Boots Mussulli and also including Russ Freeman on piano; "You Brought a New Kind of Love," "Oh Baby" and "All I Do Is Dream of You" are among the better tunes. The remainder of this release has six titles (and five previously unreleased alternate takes) from a Chaloff nonet date that also includes trumpeter Herb Pomeroy, altoist Charlie Mariano, and pianist Dick Twardzik. The three versions of "The Fable of Mabel" are each rewarding. This CD is easily recommended to fans of cool-toned bop who do not already own Serge Chaloff's very complete Mosaic box set. ~Scott Yanow

Serge Chaloff - Blue Serge

Bitrate: 320K/s
Time: 41:32
Size: 95.1 MB
Styles: Bop, Saxophone jazz
Year: 1998
Art: Front

[5:33] 1. A Handful Of Stars
[4:44] 2. The Goof And I
[3:45] 3. Thanks For The Memory
[5:24] 4. All The Things You Are
[6:43] 5. I've Got The World On A String
[5:08] 6. Susie's Blues
[4:50] 7. Stairway To The Stars
[5:23] 8. How About You

Baritonist Serge Chaloff's final recording as a leader is his best. Blue Serge is a quartet outing with pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Chaloff had already contracted the spinal paralysis that would kill him a year later but there is no hint of any weakness on this date. Whether it be "The Goof and I," "I've Got the World on a String" or a beautiful rendition of "Stairway to the Stars," this recording features Serge Chaloff at his best. ~Scott Yanow
