Alma was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia. She started performing with a local quartet at a time in which jazz was making a big comeback in Belgrade: it was 1992, and somehow, jazz clubs bloomed all across town like mushrooms. Alma was singing three nights a week then, while attending high school in the morning. At 17, she started performing and touring regularly with the Radio Big Band, then entered Law School a year later. However, in 1995, with great help and support from her parents and family, she applied and was awarded a generous scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Alma began her studies as a voice major in 1996, and graduated in 1999 with a BM in Jazz Performance. It was at Berklee that she started leading her own quartet and performing at various clubs such as Scullers, Jazz Standard as well as appearing at various festivals throughout East Coast and Europe. In 2000, Alma Micic relocated to New York City. While making her mark on the jazz scene, she met current members of her quartet.  She leads a cohesive, intuitive group that includes bassist Sean Conly, drummer Gregory Hutchinson, and pianist Brandon McCune. “Introducing Alma”, the first solo effort of this extraordinary new jazz vocalist received great critical acclaim. Featured articles included publications such as Jazzman (France), Swing Journal (Japan), All About Jazz (US), Il manifesto (Italy). Alma’s singing is steeped in tradition, her writing and lyrics completely fresh and original. It is described by Bob Young of the Boston Herald as “music that nods to the past and looks to the future.” Alma’s upcoming release “The Hours” features her originals, new takes on spirituals and a loving dedication to her ethnic heritage. https://www.last.fm/music/Alma+Micic/+wiki

Alma Micic - Introducing Alma

[6:27] 8. Infant Eyes
[3:05] 9. I Remember You
[5:24] 10. But Beautiful

On her début recording, singer Alma Micic presents a program of ten songs from the Great American Songbook or jazz standards with one original and a traditional Montenegrin "Sejdefu Majka Budjase."

Alma Micic has a nice way with a ballad and opens with the Strayhorn/Ellington "Day Dream," then moves on to an up-tempo, non-bossa "Corcovado." She mixes more ballads like "Something to Live For" and "But Beautiful" with swingers like "Yesterdays" and "I Remember You," on which Micic demonstrates a decent scatting ability. The original composition, "That April Day," has traces of the Ellington classic "Chelsea Bridge" and Micic offers a vocal version of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes" with uncredited lyrics.

Of special mention is the piano trio led by Brandon McCune that provides fine support with bassist Sean Conty and drummer Israel Bannerman. McCune demonstrates mastery of block chording in the manner of Red Garland. ~Michael P. Gladstone

Dusko Goykovich & The International Jazz Orchestra - A Handful O' Soul

In the summer of 2003 the president of the Republic of Serbia, Zoran Zivkovic, invited composer and trumpet player Dusko Goykovich to take an active part in the official celebration of 200 years of Serbian national identity. Born in 1931 in Jajce (Bosnia-Herzegovina), Goykovich had started his long international jazz career as an 18-year-old when joining the Radio Big Band of Belgrade. Dusko has been inspired by Serbian music for decades: He not only initiated the Balkan Jazz movement with his 1966 album "Swinging Macedonia" but has made good use of Balkan melodies and rhythms in most diverse jazz contexts. Of course, he accepted Zivkovic's offer with pleasure and suggested the creation of an international big band for this exceptional occasion.

In February 2004 The International Jazz Orchestra was formed -- composed of extraordinary musicians from the United States, Japan, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium, Austria, France, Slovenia, and of course Serbia. With support from the Serbian state as well as the Embassy of the United States of America, Austrian Cultural Forum in Belgrade, British Council, French Cultural Centre, Goethe Institute, and Italian Cultural Institute, an international top event took place that was going to relaunch Serbian jazz life. After a sold-out concert the orchestra went into the studio for two days, and the result is an album that offers the essence of Dusko Goykovich's big band philosophy.

Except for two special features for trombonist/singer Phil Abraham ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore") and ex-Basie orchestra altoist Brad Leali ("Jeep's Blues"), the album presents Dusko's arrangements throughout -- including great standard ballads ("I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Summertime") as well as his own evergreen originals: the soul-drenched "A Handful O' Soul", the odd-metered "Yugo Blues", the beboppish "Remember Dizzy" and the Serbian-influenced "Balkan Blue". With Dusko's relaxed arrangements and a bunch of thrilling solos by Britain's alto wizard Peter King, Germany's baritone giant Michael Lutzeier, the leader himself and others, "A Handful O' Soul" is a brilliant document of jazz orchestral maturity.

New York based, Belgrade born jazz vocalist and songwriter Alma Micic has released her highly anticipated third album “Tonight” is a collaboration with celebrated guitarist and producer Doug Wamble. Here is what Alma says on her new record:

“I really took my time with this material. We recorded over time at Doug’s house, talking about what the songs meant to me and how I wanted that projected. All the original songs featured were written within one year, are all part of the same “story,” and go hand in hand with the pop covers that we arranged. There is soul and blues and longing in all of them, and the Serbian traditional tune is transported to Memphis, Tennessee via Doug’s guitar playing.”

Alma Micic has been featured in magazines such as Downbeat, JazzTimes, Jazzwise, All About Jazz as well as Boston Phoenix, Boston Globe, Riverdale Press and the New York Times.

Alma’s singing has been described as “confident, soulful, vulnerable, rhythmically savvy, with the most sensual vibrato you’re likely to hear” (All About Jazz). She has received numerous awards such as the Cleo Laine Award for Outstanding Musicianship and BRIO Award from the NY Arts Council.
