Although Karen Souza’s voice seems to be made for Jazz, her career began under different pseudonyms, writing songs and providing vocals to several electronic music producers, which made her part of many House hits, included in numerous records as prestigious as Pacha Ibiza, FTV (Fashion TV), Paris Dernier, Hotel Costes and Privé, among others.

Karen started flirting with Jazz when she was invited to participate in the first album of the Jazz & 80's series. Back then, no one could imagine how successful these series would become overnight. Her producer saw in Karen the ideal voice for this project. They worked together enthusiastically, making Karen Souza and her unique voice the core of each album in these series. This granted Karen an active participation in these bestselling and successful albums. She went on to record vocals continously for the series Jazz & 70's, Jazz & 80's and Jazz and 90´s, which bring together great pop songs from all these eras in a jazz/bossa/blues format. To the surprise of the entertainment business, these albums have earned an amazing fan base in many countries and within different age groups, which resulted in almost every record label trying to recreate the concept. Essentials, her first album, compiles Karen’s best renditions from the albums previously mentioned. It was released in march 2011, and it immediately became a sales success, to the point it was tagged as “New and Noteworthy” on iTunes.

By the middle of 2011, Karen and a classic jazz trio, began to perform all around the world. That gave the audience the chance to meet her in person. With Music Brokers, her record label, they thought it was the right time to produce new material. As a result, she went to Los Angeles to work with some of the world’s greatest songwriters, such as Pamela Phillips Oland (pamoland.com), a multiple Grammy nominee lyricist who has worked with artists as important as Whitney Houston, Earth, Wind & Fire and Aretha Franklin, among others.

In 2012, Karen Souza released Hotel Souza, an album that brings Karen back to the composition sessions, but this time her new record was produced by Joel McNeely, famous for his work with Tony Bennet and Peggy Lee. The album was a total surprice given its originality and beauty. About this album, Karen said “it’s been a pleasure working with Joel, this record represents that magical time”. Shortly after its release, HOTEL SOUZA reached the first positions in the Top 10 of the most popular record stores in Latin America, staying for months. It also reached the #10 position in the Top Jazz Albums in the US.

Because of Karen’s constant evolution and requests from her fans on her social networks, Karen embarked on a new version album. Essentials II was recorded in the city of New York and the vocals were produced by the famous songwriter, record producer and co-founder of The Orchard, Richard Gottehrer.https://www.allaboutjazz.com/musicians/karen-souza/

There is a 19th Century short story by author Frank Stockton entitled, The Lady, or the Tiger? The hook of that work is the teaser leave-you-hanging ending: is there a Lady or the man-eating Tiger behind the door that is selected and "opened." With Hotel Souza, her second CD, Buenos Aires-based vocalist Karen Souza leaves little to the imagination. This hotel has musical rooms of exquisite talent, beauty, elegance and intimacy.

Displaying sensuality without a cloying phoniness, Souza delivers eleven beautifully-performed and impeccably-arranged songs, backed here by some of L.A.'s "usual suspects." The result is a marvelously entertaining tour d' hote. Souza's voice is one of elegant restraint and sensuousness. Hers is not an overpowering vocal presence, but rather, a very inviting one. She seduces deliciously with gentleness and whisper-to-the mic sultriness. That feeling is pervasive across an interesting selection of ballads, bossas (Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Dindi"), softer swing ("Delectable You," "Full Moon") and soft-rock grooves ("Night Demon"). She hits a soulful home run with a dark blue rendition of Marvin Gaye's classic, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," recorded here with members of Gaye's original band. The Joel McNeely arrangements are slick and frame Souza well without over-dominating her. That savvy set-up allows Souza's lyric and tonal skills to dominate. Her diction, phrasing, dynamic nuance and intonation are exceptional.

In addition to her song-styling chops, the compositions Souza co-authored here—eight of them, demonstrate that she has a flair for the melodic and poetic. The ensemble and brief solo outings across the board are First Class and without studio sterility. The famous Michelin Travel Guide may rate the world's hotels and attractions and not musical fare. Perhaps if they did, Hotel Souza would score extremely well. Select any musical door here and a Lady of exuberant talent and taste awaits. ~Nicholas F. Mondello

There is no doubt that Karen Souza is poised to become recognized as one of the great new voices of jazz today. After the success of her remarkable debut album, Essentials, Karen decided to embark on a songwriting journey that took almost two years and led her far from her home in Buenos Aires to Los Angeles, where she joined with U.S. producer Joel McNeely. Famous for his work with immortal artists such as Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Al Green and Jaco Pastorius, McNeely has provided the arrangements with a sound that is both classic and modern a combination that is highly valued in this day and age.
Karen´s voice, intimate and sensuous as always, floats between clouds of strings and winds and creates an atmosphere that can only be described as vintage. One of the few versions found on this artist album is a very special rendition of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" where Karen had the great fortune of performing with several musicians from Marvin's original band. Recorded at The Factory and on in the Century 21 studios in LA, this is an album that showcases Karen as an multifaceted artist about to embark on an exciting career. Hotel Souza is one of the most anticipated albums of the season.
