Se formó musicalmente, a partir de los 7 años, en la Escola Municipal de Música de Sant Andreu, un barrio de Barcelona, como trompetista primero y saxofonista después. En 2007, con sólo 12 años, comenzó a colaborar con el grupo de jazz Sant Andreu Jazz Band, dirigido por el profesor de música y músico Joan Chamorro. Ha participado en numerosos conciertos del circuito catalán de jazz. Debido a su precocidad numerosos medios de comunicación la han entrevistado o han escrito reseñas de su actividad musical. Su voz se ha comparado con la de Norah Jones. En 2010, con solo 15 años, graba como cantante solista un disco de estándares de jazz titulado Joan Chamorro presenta Andrea Motis. 

Recientemente ofrece conciertos en el denominado "Andrea Motis & Joan Chamorro Group".Logró a estar entre los 10 finalistas de los premios "Català de l'any 2011" otorgados por "El Periódico de Catalunya". Pero rechazó seguir adelante, según declararon sus padres, porque esa candidatura llegaba "en una etapa inadecuada de su vida".Con 17 años pasó unas pruebas para una escuela de artísticos llamada Oriol Martorell, situada en Nou Barris, Barcelona. This is a logical tribute since clarinetist Bobby Gordon's main influence is Pee Wee Russell. Although Gordon's solos are not as eccentric or death-defying as Russell's, his tone is similar and there are times when he sounds eerily close to his idol. Joined by trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, trombonist Dan Barrett, tenor saxophonist Rick Fay, pianist Johnny Varro, rhythm guitarist Marty Grosz, bassist Bob Haggart, and drummer Gene Estes, Gordon explores a dozen songs composed by Russell. In addition, Gordon performs "Charles Ellsworth Stomp" (which he co-wrote) and one of Russell's favorite songs, "I'd Climb the Hightest Mountain." Since some of these numbers were co-written by Dick Cary and recorded by Russell in modern swing settings during the late '50s (rather than Dixieland dates with Eddie Condon), the music on this CD is often tightly arranged while leaving some room for spontaneous jamming. A drummer with strong inclinations toward traditional jazz performance, Hal Smith was born in Indianapolis, IN, on July 30, 1953. Taking up drums at the age of ten among his teachers was the great Jake Hanna he made his professional debut in 1978, and in the years to follow served with the likes of the Dukes of Dixieland and the Grand Dominion Jazz Band. Smith also led groups including the Frisco Syncopaters and the Down Home Jazz Band, and regularly collaborated with Butch Thompson and Bobby Gordon. Among his recording dates are 1994's California Here I Come, 1995's Swing, Brother, Swing, and 1996's Bourbon Street Memories. This CD has trumpeter and cornetist Peter Ecklund leading an all-star septet that he assembled for the 1994 Elkhart Indiana Jazz Festival. Ecklund is joined by the members of the Orphan Newsboys (clarinetist Bobby Gordon, rhythm guitarist and singer Marty Grosz, and bassist Greg Cohen) plus trombonist Dan Barrett, pianist Mark Shane, and drummer Hal Smith. Grosz has four vocals, Ecklund whistles on "Where the Blue of the Night," and the band romps on such numbers as "Yacht Club Swing," "Borneo," "Nobody's Sweetheart," and "Prince of Wails." Joyce Breach is a fine cabaret singer with a deep voice who mostly sings songs fairly straightforwardly. This is one of her most jazz-oriented releases, not because she starts improvising any more than normal, but due to her strong sidemen: trombonist Bob Havens, clarinetist Bobby Gordon, pianist Keith Ingham, bassist Bob Haggart and drummer Hal Smith (who is the leader of the backup quintet). Most of the selections are either from the swing era or played in that style, and there are plenty of short solos from Havens and Gordon. Breach sounds fine on such tunes as "Somebody Loves Me," "I Can Dream, Can't I," "But Not for Me" and "A Hundred Years From Today," although she rarely makes any of the vintage standards her own. ~Joyce Breach

The first impression one gets when listening to this well-crafted tribute to the 100th birthday of Joe Marsala (and available now, thirty years after his death) is the feeling of having been transported to the past, albeit with clear digital technology. The CD is traditional jazz at its best with none of the hiss so common in remastered recordings of the 1930s era after all, the disc was recorded in 2007.  During the sessions, clarinetist Bobby Gordon made no attempt to write arrangements that modernized the tunes; all of them are played in their original swinging big band era style, of which Marsala is a direct product. To recreate the selections, much of the sheet music was obtained from publishers who still carried them, while others came from collectors' files and even auction sites like eBay.

On the never-before-recorded "Angelique," violinist Russell George obviously channels Stephane Grappelli in one of his solos; "Village Blues swings hard while George, trumpeter Randy Reinhart and Gordon trade solos until they all come together, improvising New Orleans-style until the end. The same happens with "Southern Comfort and "Little Sir Echo," the latter being the most enjoyable (and upbeat) of the three. The title track has a bluesy feel on which Gordon stretches and the brilliant "I Don't Have To Dream Anymore opens with a syncopated bass line by Vince Giordano and has another fine Reinhart solo. 

Another previously unrecorded tune, "Say When," begin with notes resembling the theme from the film An Affair to Remember but soon evolves through each musician's lead turns, one of the most beautiful coming from pianist Keith Ingham. Clarinetist Bobby Gordon and pianist Dave McKenna have teamed up with Frank Tate and Joe Ascione to produce a quartet recording that is soulful in a low-key, swinging way. Gordon plays a rich toned, introspective clarinet with an emotional range that incorporates hesitancies and doubts, which plays off well against the seemingly casual virtuosity of McKenna. In fact, the setting brings out some of the best in McKenna as he plays in a more pared down, single note style quite different from what a listener might expect who is only familiar with his renowned solo work. Gordon’s darkly, beautiful opening clarinet solo to the title track "Clarinet Blue" inspires an equally striking response from McKenna. This is part of what makes this recording so good: Gordon’s opening tone-setting solos, ably accompanied by McKenna, followed by a vivid McKenna reply. 

All of this rides above the subtle, responsive bass and drums duet of Frank Tate and Joe Ascione. Those who know Dave McKenna as the soloist with a rollicking left hand that seems to rise out of the depths of the earth will be continually tweaked by what he can do as an accompanist in a small group context. Deep listening is evident throughout this recording. Bassist Frank Tate’s solos are consistently attuned to the emotional climate of the tunes. His solo on "I Cried For You" is outstanding. Drummer Joe Ascione helps keep everyone on course, adding his own imaginative solos. This is a recording that gets better and better with repeated listening. Clarinet Blue will be especially interesting to those who enjoy the dynamics of a thoughtful rhythm section and a laid back solo exchange. This is small group swing, indeed. ~ Mike Neely
