Judi Erickson is better known as Judi K, a jazz singer of some note on the Chicago scene through the 1980s and '90s. The "K" comes from the first letter of the last name she went by during her married years. Through a series of chance encounters and lucky breaks, she got the opportunity to record two albums of classic jazz standards, sing for 15 years with a popular Chicago jazz band and perform with other notable music figures.

For his fourth Criss Cross recording, pianist Luis Perdomo offers a swinging affair, on which a crackling quintet of New York first-callers interprets seven originals by the leader (the centrepiece is the well-wrought six-piece "Spirits and Warriors Suite" that gives the CD its title), Clifford Jordan's iconic jazz standard "Glass Bead Games," and the classic ballad "Portrait of Jenny".

Propelled by drum grandmaster Billy Hart and bassist Ugonna Okegwo, who lock in like life-long partners, tenor saxophonist Mark Shim and trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, a Criss Cross regular, uncork cogent solos, some inflamed, some nuanced.

Perdomo, plays throughout with the old soul clarity, grit, maturity and freshness that have earned him deep respect from the best and brightest representatives of the hardcore jazz and Afro-Caribbean practitioners on the international playing field.

Personnel on "Bistro Ballads":
Audrey Morris, vocals and piano; Johnnie Pate, bass; Charles Walton, cymbals.
Recorded in Chicago, March 31 and April 1, 1955

Personnel on "The Voice of Audrey Morris":
Audrey Morris, vocals, accompanied by Marty Paich and His Orchestra.
Marty Paich, conductor, arranger, piano & celeste; Stu Williamson, trumpet Bill Pitman, guitar; Joe Mondragon, bass; Irv Cottler or Alvin Stoller (#11-14), drums; Felix Slatkin and the Hollywood Strings
Recorded in Hollywood, July, 1956

From the early 50s, Audrey Morris’ delicate piano and forceful voice was an asset to any intimate Chicago club —or bistros, whatever be the case— into the wee hours, bucking the current taste for bawdy chanteuses and cultivating a repertoire of obscure, understated material, as she displayed in her two first albums. On the first, “Bistro Ballads”, she provides her own spare, sophisticated piano accompaniment, supported by the sensitive bass of Johnny Pate and the hushed cymbals of Charles Walton, as she brings her soulful style to bear on some untarnished ballads worthy of her skill and intelligence. On “The Voice of Audrey Morris,” she’s backed by a group of jazzmen plus a superb string section conducted and arranged by Marty Paich. It’s a relaxed, well balanced session on which she is heard to advantage backed by the wholly enticing sound of Stu Williamson’s muted trumpet, while the warm guitar of Bill Pitman and Paich’s ruminative piano engage effectively behind them. She sings a dozen warm standards with uncommon intimacy and assurance, and a quietly swinging approach, without letting the creative tension of her interpretations falter for a moment.

Yana Bibb - Afternoon In Paris

11. Before You Go (4:55)

In the beginning: Leon Bibb. Born 1922, he sang at the first ever Newport Folk Festival, was a friend of Paul Robeson and, like him, blacklisted in the McCarthy era for his left-wing sympathies. After fighting segregation in Mississippi in the 1960s, he went to live in Canada.

Next came his son, Eric Bibb. Born 1951, he started playing guitar aged seven and was advised by Bob Dylan, no less, "Keep it simple, forget all that fancy stuff." Eric Bibb became a singer-songwriter and moved to Europe in 1970. He currently lives in Finland.

Now we have Eric Bibb's daughter Yana Bibb. She grew up in Sweden before—recently—moving to France. She too is a singer-songwriter, this being her second album for the French label DixieFrog, where she joins an impressive roster of blues-based artists.

Yana Bibb cuts an unlikedly figure in a world of whisky swilling, stubble-chinned, axe-wielding outlaws. But her stylish appearance, jazzy vocals and sensitive lyrics make a welcome break in the testosterone-fuelled, riff-based rock that is DixieFrog's main bill of fare.

Perhaps the jazz influence is from another of her antecedents. Her great uncle was none other than John Lewis, pianist of the Modern Jazz Quartet. He once wrote a song titled "Afternoon In Paris." It's the title of this album, but isn't included.

In a generally well-balanced selection of songs, Bibb doffs her very fashionable Parisian hat—featured on the cover and throughout the album notes—to two greats from either end of the jazz spectrum. She pays tribute to Bessie Smith with her own "Bessie's Advice," then courageously reinterprets Peggy Lee's smoky classic "Black Coffee."

Stopping off to resurrect "I Will," a lesser known item from the Lennon and McCartney songbook, Bibb then sings "For You," a heartfelt ballad by her father, and—in Swedish—her own "Syster Min," (Sister Mine). Both numbers are testament to the strength of Bibb family ties. "Kärleks Vals (Love's Waltz)" is perhaps a Swedish ballad too far —there's a feel of the gig winding down, losing direction.

But things pick up a bit with the closer, the dreamy "Before You Go," dedicated to Leon Bibb. Which is where we came in. ~Chris Mosey

Personnel: Yana Bibb: vocals; Eric Bibb, Staffan Astner: guitars; Peter Forss, Dan Martinez: bass; Jesper Nordenström: organ; John Rangel, Alessandro Fadini, Greg Barbone: piano; Per Lindvall, Nicci Notini, Chris Parker: drums; Wojtek Goral: saxophone, flute; Martin Lood: trumpet; Petra Wallgren: violin.

Now's the Time captures Charlie Parker during one of his peak recording periods. The personnel of Hank Jones, Al Haig, Percy Heath, Teddy Kotick, and Max Roach all contribute immeasurably to this classic session. There are numerous outtakes, which offers a fascinating analysis of Parker's improvisations, as well as classics such as "Song Is You," "Laird Baird," "Kim," and "Now's the Time." What makes this session extra special is the excellent recording quality that too many of his early recordings, brilliant as they are, suffered from. Hearing the clarity of each player contributes to one of bebop's best sessions. This is essential music. ~Robert Taylor

Getting her start as a standup comedienne, in the early '90s Jennifer Trainor began to direct her efforts toward shaping a singing career by cutting her performing teeth at small clubs and piano bars in and around the Boston area. Her first CD is a conglomeration of favorite standards mixed with more modern pop material. The only assistance she gets is from Doug Hammer, who augments his piano with the use of keyboard and synthesizer. The latter forms the basis for a string-laden, but enchanting rendition of "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning." But when Hammer sticks with the straightforward acoustic piano, the subtleties in Trainor's phrasing become evident on "Good Morning Heartache" and "Desafinado." These nuances are not fully exploited when Hammer turns to the keyboard for the ersatz organ sound. Trainor can also be peppy and preppy when she dives into pop favorites, including "How Can I Be Sure," which was popularized by David Cassidy. But she is also not afraid to take on lesser-known material. There is a credible reading of one of Barry Manilow's lesser-known efforts, the lilting "I Was a Fool to Let You Go." She also has some fun with the bar song "Scotch & Soda," composed by the Kingston Trio's Dave Guard. The play list was obviously constructed to bring out the best that the singer has to offer. She does not have a powerful voice, nor one with especially great range. What she has are large doses of warmth and expressiveness, deftly spooned to each song she offers. Call Me is a pleasant recital of tunes, well-known and less-familiar, by a singer confident in her ability to deliver a tune. Recommended. ~Dave Nathan

Sheila Jordan's debut recording was one of the very few vocal records made for Blue Note during Alfred Lion's reign. Accompanied by the subtle guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Denzil Best, Jordan sounds quite distinctive, cool-toned, and adventurous during her classic date. Her interpretations of Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "Hum Drum Blues" and 11 standards (including "Falling in Love With Love," "Dat Dere," "Baltimore Oriole," and "I'm a Fool to Want You") are both swinging and haunting. Possibly because of her originality, Sheila Jordan would not record again for over a dozen years, making this highly recommended set quite historic.~Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/portrait-of-sheila-jordan-mw0000202415

Virtually all of tenor-saxophonist Dexter Gordon's SteepleChase recordings find him in prime form. This music, released for the first time in 1995, is a bit unusual in that Gordon (who usually played in a quartet) is joined by the fiery trumpeter Benny Bailey who has a particularly exciting solo on "At Ronnie 's." The obscure European rhythm section is fine in support of the two lead voices who, in addition to "At Ronnie's," perform Bill Barron's "Revelation," a couple of standards and a two-song ballad medley. Worth picking up.~Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/revelation-mw0000695442

Geoff Matoon was born to shine, and does so most brilliantly when he's wailing on saxophone, wind controller or keyboards. Geoff, however, is not only a multi talented performer but he is also gifted as a composer, arranger and producer. Geoff's music taps into emotionally charged regions that anyone with two ears can key into. This is the stuff of smooth jazz radio, but with a sophistication and depth traditonalists can dig as well. After graduating college Geoff moved to New York City where he is known on the scene as an innovative and intuitive player. He immediately got to work building his own studio where he devotes himself to perfecting his song writing, producing and engineering skills. He has worked with producer Tony Visconti (known for his work with David Bowie and the Moody Blues, among others), Emmy award winner David Grant (Theme song for Guiding Light), and has played on numerous jingles, including ones for Pontiac, Ford and L.A. Gear. As a free-lancer, he has jammed with such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Joe Sample, Terumasa Hino, Jeff Healey, John Popper and Onaje Allan Gumbs. As the featured player with Johnny Allen, he has shared the stage with Edgar Winter, Bo Diddley, Joan Osborne, Roomful of Blues, Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler. With the Kiss 98.7 Radio Band Geoff performed with Issac Hayes. Geoff also had the honor to back up Allison Williams at the Meadow Lands with the "Jeff Fox Band. Most recently Geoff performed at the Hal Jackson "Celebrate 60 years of Broadcast" Party playing with the The WBLS Radio Band along with Smokey Robinson, Yolanda Adams and John Lucien. Now with the release of his debut CD "Unity", Geoff has emerged as a songwriter of the highest order. His musical vision is firmly stamped onto all aspects of his recordings, as he produced the work, played sax, keyboards, Wind controller and Midi percussion and has surrounded himself by great musicians such as Will Lee, Chuck Loeb and many others. Geoff Matoon is one of those rare and sophisticated combinations of virtuoso musician and gifted composer/ producer. His is music that can impress Jazz elitists and move average listeners. His is a talent that soars and one on which all ears will soon be attuned.~Editorial Reviews https://www.amazon.com/Unity-Geoff-Mattoon/dp/B00004RBHC?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
