Since the beginning of jazz and pop music artists have presented their own versions of high profile classic and obscure hidden treasures. Chicago pianist/arranger Marshall Vente joins forces with Chicago vocalist/producer Joanie Pallatto in a new collection of 15 songs that include 2 originals. Pallatto’s exquisite vocals are wrapped in the lush and creative arrangements of pianist Vente as he strokes the keys of the Baldwin SD-10 9' concert grand creating his own personal orchestra.

No style of music is left alone as the CD opens with Lennon & McCartney's "Help!" And yes, The Beatles do swing! Traces of urban soul sizzle with track #2, “People Make The World Go Round.” Pallatto and Vente pay respect to composer Jimmy Webb on track #4 with their ethereal version of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix." These are just 3 of the 15 songs on this CD!!! And this is only a 1 sheet!

Described by Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune as having “a stirring and special voice,” Joanie Pallatto has released fifteen CDs, and has performed at many Chicago jazz clubs, the Chicago Jazz Festival, and was a featured soloist with Daniel Barenboim in "Ellington Among Friends" at Symphony Center in 1999. She is co-founder of Southport Records with partner and piano man Bradley Parker-Sparrow.

Chicago's Southport label has brought different groupings of instrumentalists into the recording studio to back Martha Lorin for her second album. Only superb pianist Mike Black appears on all the cuts with Lorin. To Ms Lorin and Southport's credit, they avoid the temptation of limiting the musical agenda to the usual standards by offering songs that are not recorded that often.

But it is the way the musicians are mixed that makes for an intriguing, unusual event. On "You've Got a Friend" and "The Island," Leon Joyce's snare shares accompanist duties with Black resulting in a stark, slimmed down rendition of these two tunes. The dean of Chicago tenor saxophone players (although Eddie Johnson fans may disagree), Von Freeman, shows up on two tracks playing especially soulfully on "Carefully Taught" from South Pacific. Another staple of the Chicago jazz scene, violinist Johnny Frigo, lends his swinging fiddle to a fine arrangement of "Let's Face the Music and Dance" and well to "Detour ahead" for which he shares composer credit. Once again Leon Joyce's rat-a-tat snares are prominent in setting the pace. However, it's the opening cut which provides the clue that this album may not be the usual run of the mill release.

"Close Your Eyes" is kicked off with as a tango by Black with William Blount's clarinet taking the melody providing a seductive lead in for Lorin. She keeps the tango beat going with strong support from Blount's playing in the clarinet's middle register. A very attractive performance, indeed. "On Green Dolphin Street" offers still another interesting assortment of instruments. With Black's piano continuing to be the constant, Fareed Haque's guitar provides the lead in for Lorin's vocal followed by an athletic Von Freeman tenor solo and he stays around to play behind Lorin for the last chorus. The arrangement of the Johnny Mandel/Alan and Marilyn Bergman tune "Cinnamon and Clove" centers on a Caribbean beat played against Johnny Frigo's straight ahead jazz violin. Lorin's own "Low Down Blues," which she wrote with pianist Frank Collett, is the best of her two compositions and highlights some excellent bass work by Larry Gray.

But nowhere is Lorin's ability to create a story with pictures  brought to life than on the album's coda, "Lush Life." With William Blount's brooding clarinet as background, Lorin delivers a stunning interpretation of Billy Strayhorn's difficult to sing tale of depression and woe. Although not a threat to replace the Johnny Hartman/John Coltrane Quartet version as the classic interpretation, Lorin's work does not suffer by comparison. Good work all around on this album which offers a generous 71 minutes of music.

“Give my new disc a spin,” said Joanie Pallatto (via e–mail). “I think you’ll like it” (or words to that effect). Yeah, sure, I thought; another undiscovered phenom. Okay, so she was right; I liked it. A shade below phenomenal, perhaps, but I’ve heard a large number of female singers over the past few years including some big label hotshots, and she’s in the same league with any of them. Pallatto’s warm, personal style suits well her charming, slightly husky voice. She has splendid control, range and diction, and most important abiding respect for a lyric. Oh, and her choice of material is exemplary, as is the 70:44 playing time on Words and Music, Joanie’s sixth recording on Chicago’s Southport label, which she and husband Bradley Parker Sparrow co own. Sparrow does more than serve as producer and recording engineer; he wrote and plays piano on a musical tribute to Jobim, “Antonio” (for which Joanie supplied the lyrics), and “So Fine.” Pallatto also penned new lyrics for Miles Davis’ “Somethin’ Else!” (on which she breezily sings and scats with Ron Cooper) and Kenny Dorham’s lovely “Blue Bossa.” These are high spots, as is Bob Dorough’s amusing “Love (Webster’s definition),” whose clever lyric lends itself perfectly to Pallatto’s sardonic point of view.

My particular favorites among the half–dozen standards are Rodgers and Hart’s “This Can’t Be Love” and the Gershwins’ “But Not for Me,” although the sensuous opener, Hoagy Carmichael / Paul Francis Webster’s “Baltimore Oriole,” doesn’t lag far behind in that parade. Pallatto spices the menu by using a number of admirable back–up groups from duo (she and guitarist Dave Onderdonk in a saucy rendition of the turn–of–the–last–century hit, “Daisy Bell”) to quintet with Windy City veterans Eldee Young, Redd Holt and Willie Pickens among the better–known names. They’re first–rate, as are pianist Lou Gregory, bassist Dan Shapera, drummer Chanté Hamilton, percussionist Alejo Poveda and flutist Rich Fudoli (who’s on board for “Love” and “Desafinado”). Pallatto may never become what the world considers a star, but she’s doing what she loves best, and doing it quite well. That should be enough to make anyone happy including, of course, those who are lucky enough to hear and appreciate what she has to say. ~ Jack Bowers   http://www.allaboutjazz.com/words-and-music-joanie-pallatto-southport-records-review-by-jack-bowers.php#.U4z4kSioqdl

Joanie Pallatto - It's Not Easy

[3:53] 10. Remember Me

It's Not Easy is a very different Joanie Pallatto recording. Co-owner along with pianist Bradley Parker-Sparrow of the jazz-oriented Southport label, Pallatto has always had an open-eared approach to music. Her voice is warm, flexible, and inviting whether expressing joy or melancholy moods. On It's Not Easy, the music ranges from atmospheric pieces to intimate duets, from folkish music and the feel of reggae to adventurous jazz. All ten of the selections are originals by the singer and she is in the spotlight nearly all of the time. If you listen closely, her lyrics (unfortunately the words are not reproduced in the liner notes) display insight, some wit, and a quirky way at looking at contemporary life, with "It's Not Easy" talking about the difficulties of writing a sad song when one is happy. However, the melodies are much less interesting, often using repetitive structures and not always serving the lyrics that well. Joanie Pallatto cuts loose in a few spots and is always fun to hear (though the group improvisation on "Tickle, Tickle," at over nine and a half minutes, is five minutes too long), but her CD is a mixed success. Her words deserve better themes. ~ Scott Yanow
