Born in London, England, in the outskirts of Beckenham, Jenny Evans is an accomplished entertainer in multiple fields. Most recognized as a jazz singer, she's also worked as an actress and lyricist, and at one time ran her own jazz club, Jenny's Place. She's appeared in films, commercials, German TV series, stage musicals, and plays. Born in 1954, Evans moved to Munich, Germany in 1976 to study music and teaching English as a second language. While working toward her degree, she became the lead singer of a band called Old Socks New Shoes. The ragtime numbers they were performing slowly shifted toward classic jazz. Though her recording repertoire spans original tunes and classics ranging from Gershwin to the Beatles, her sultry voice and supple delivery encourage jazz renditions. In 1988, Evans released her debut album, Whisper Not, with ESM Records and Bell Music. The same labels issued At Lloyd's, featuring the Rudi Martini Quartet, in 1993. Her 1997 LP Shiny Stockings arrived via Enja Records, which also released 1999's swing-era celebration Girl Talk, 2001's Gonna Go Fishin', and 2004's Nuages. Keeping busy between recordings with appearances at clubs, festivals, and on tours through Europe, Germany, Australia, Russia, and Japan, she released Christmas Songs in late 2005. With Evans still collaborating with drummer Rudi Martini, Lunar Tunes followed on Enja in 2008. Evans returned to ESM Records and, working with a backing band that included woodwinds specialist Felix Sapotnik and bassist Sven Faller, released Are You the Man? A New Peter Kreuder Song Book in 2010 and The Four Seasons of Love in 2011. She took on British pop/rock, including hits by the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, and Sting, for 2016's Be What You Want to Be, released by Edition Collage. ~ Marcy Donelson & Charlotte Dillon https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/at-lloyds-live/264518219

Jazz vocalist Jenny Evans, born and raised in Britain, has been a resident of Munich for many years. Sometimes when she scats, one can almost detect a hint of a German accent. But although her career has been based wholly in Europe, Evans’s passion is the Great American Songbook. Delving into material such as "Willow Weep for Me," "In a Mellow Tone," and "Honeysuckle Rose," she displays a voice that is deep and golden-toned. Her intonation is perfect maybe even too perfect. A little more rough-edged spontaneity might have made the session less ordinary, especially on such often-played standards as "Caravan" and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise." "April In Paris" is lackluster, not to mention a tad too fast the beautiful bridge rushes right by.

That said, Evans really knows how to get around these songs, and so does her band. Trumpeter Dusko Goykovich and tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso often team up to play inspired shout choruses; when Evans joins them as a third "horn," it sounds like a mini big band. Basso’s solo style is delightfully old-school. All three collaborated on the lively "That’s What Zoot Said," dedicated to the late Zoot Sims; Goykovich and Evans co-wrote the other two originals of the session, "Good Old Days" and "The Song of Autumn," both minor-key ballads. Solid playing is also the norn for pianist David Gazarov, bassist Branko Pejakovic, and drummer/producer Rudi Martini. ~ David Adler https://www.allaboutjazz.com/shiny-stockings-jenny-evans-enja-records-review-by-david-adler.php

Born in London, England, in the lowly outskirts of Beckenham, Jenny Evans is a talented master of many trades. She is an unforgettable jazz singer, but she has also been an actress and lyricist, and she has run a jazz club for five years called Jenny's Place. She has been in musicals such as Blood Brothers, her voice has been used in films, and she even has a M.A. degree in linguistics to fall back on (as if she would ever need to). Evans moved to Munich, Germany, in 1976 to study to be a teacher of music and English. While working toward her degree, she became the lead singer for a band called Old Socks New Shoes. The ragtime numbers she performed with the group slowly blended toward classic jazz. Though she appears comfortable and capable singing anything from Gershwin songs to numbers by the Beatles, her sultry voice seems made just for jazz. In 1997, Evans released her debut album for ENJA Records, Shiny Stockings. The album won her good reviews by many. Girl Talk hit the stores in 1999 with tracks like "Love for Sale," "Mr. Bojangles," and "I Wanna Be Near to You." The English singer Jenny Evans has, for many years now, been regarded as one the leading jazz vocalists in Europe. When guitar player Paulo Morello played her one of his melodies a while back it was the start of a new musical project. Without further ado Jenny wrote lyrics to the tune, calling the song Like A Breath of Spring and this gave rise to a whole new programme with songs inspired by the four seasons of the year. For this project the vocalist presents a New Trio feat. Paulo Morello (guitar), Sven Faller (bass) and Felix Sapotnik (saxophones, clarinets, flute). Jazz standards like Estate, Early Autumn and Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most find themselves in the company of classical melodies by Erik Satie and Thomas Morely; a sonette by Shakespeare - Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day is complemented by European compositions like The Summer Wind and Michel Legrands The Summer Knows as well as one of Kurt Weill’s American hits, September Song. Paulo Morello has written a theme song specially for this project: The Four Seasons Of Love to which Jenny Evans wrote the lyrics.

English singer Jenny Evans covers a wide range of material in this live recording made at Munich's Jazzclub Unterfahrt. The rich-voiced alto conveys her emotions with powerful renditions of "The Man I Love," "Black Coffee," and "Angel Eyes."

She has a lot of fun with the Duke Ellington-Peggy Lee collaboration "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" and scats up a storm in Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments." She contributed the lyrics to Dusko Goykovich's "Love Is the Answer" and arranged it with an Afro-Cuban flavor while just as easily switching gears to the exotic Middle Eastern sound of Rabih Abou-Khalil's "Still She Dances," with some more fine scatting, along with sensational drumming by Guido May and additional percussion by Biboul Darouiche. Evans' adventurous spirit and clear diction add to the value of this very enjoyable CD. ~ Ken Dryden  http://www.allmusic.com/album/gonna-go-fishin-mw0000007110
