[3:53] 10. All Or Nothing At All

Ann Richards never received the same acclamation as her more famous vocal predecessors with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Anita O'Day, June Christy, and Chris Connor. While these three went on to carve out successful careers as singles, Richards, after her divorce from Kenton, slowly sank into obscurity. With a style closer in style to O'Day's, Richards could swing out a tune with the best of them and could scat with vim and verve. She demonstrates these talents on "It's a Wonderful World" and "All or Nothing at All." She could also credibly deliver on blues tunes as on "The Morning After (The Night Before)." Richards could move to a lower range and get torchy, which she does on "My Kinda Love." Then she slow-drags "I Got Rhythm," riding atop the doleful tones of the trombone section and a muted trumpet. While he didn't have the big names that peppered earlier bands, this Kenton group could swing and play as a cohesive group. Like all Kenton bands, it featured the high note blaring trumpet. Here it's Bud Brisbois that supplied the upper atmospheric notes on the horn. There are a couple of selections where Richards is backed by just a small group, as on "No Moon at All," where she doesn't have to compete with the larger aggregation, showing off her voice to its full advantage. With a slim discography, this album is an important contribution to the legacy of a good singer whose career was far too short. ~Dave Nathan

Ann Richards, only in her early twenties at the time, had already sung with Charlie Barnet and would always be closely associated with Stan Kenton (whom she married and later divorced). Her life was short, but she did record a few albums as a leader, including this one, her debut. Backed by an unidentified big band conducted by Brian Farnon and arranged by Warren Barker, Richards displays an appealing voice and a swinging style. She was best at this point on upbeat material, so the highlights include "I'm Shooting High," "Poor Little Rich Girl" and "Will You Still Be Mine." ~Scott Yanow

(1:28) 12. I'm Late

As its title promises, The Many Moods of Ann Richards captures the singer in a series of different contexts and styles, precisely the kind of project that could amount to little more than a patchwork mess in the hands of a lesser talent. But arrangers Ralph Carmichael, Bill Holman, and Tak Shindo all prove sympathetic collaborators, spotlighting Richards' smoldering vocals in milieus that perfectly complement her lusty vibrato. For all their cosmetic differences, Holman's cool jazz sensibilities and Shindo's Far East exotica boast a comparably sensual atmosphere, and Richards seizes the moment with a series of assured, intelligent performances that prove her versatility and consistency. ~ Jason Ankeny https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-many-moods-of-ann-richards-mw0000864075

[1:58] 10. Love Is A Word For The Blues
[2:55] 11. How Do I Look In Blue
[3:02] 12. I Couldn't Sleep A Wink Last Night

Ann Richards, an excellent singer who was married to Stan Kenton for a few years, only recorded a few solo albums before slipping away into obscurity. Ann, Man! is her most intimate date, a quartet set with trumpeter Jack Sheldon, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Red Callender, and drummer Larry Bunker. Four of the songs (including "There's a Lull in My Life" and "You Go to My Head") are duets with Kessel. Richards shows off her versatility and sensitivity on this well-rounded set, swinging lightly and singing with restrained emotions. It is a pity that she did not have a prosperous career, for the talent was definitely there. ~Scott Yanow
