Clare Teal With the Syd Lawrence Orchestra - A Tribute To Ella Fitzgerald

Recording direct-to-disk is difficult enough. The entire side has to be cut in one long take. Consider a big band vocal album like this, which has four songs per side. The orchestra and singer have to be ready as soon as the cutting stylus hits the lacquer and then they have to perform flawlessly on each track, pausing but a few seconds between songs. Often these records sound stilted and mannered as no one wants to produce a "clam" and ruin the whole thing but here everything works perfectly, with the mellifluous Clare Teal backed by The Syd Lawrence Orchestra a brash and brassy ensemble. Incredibly, it was ll rehearsed, mixed and cut to lacquer at Air Studios in one day!, under the supervision of producer Mike Valentine and co-producer Francoise Valentine. So first, who is Clare Teal? She's well-known in the U.K.

In 2004, the then thirty one year old singer was signed to Sony Jazz, in a deal that at the time was the biggest recording deal in U.K. jazz history. She grew up listening to her father's 78rpm record collection and fell in love with big band vocal music, particularly the records of Ella Fitzgerald. Teal, for all intents and purposes, sounds like a 1940's era singer transported to 2016, not just in her phrasing but particularly her vocal timbre. I can think of no other female vocalist today who hits this particular nostalgic mark and does so without it sounding forced or archaic. Instead it sounds refreshing and generous. The repertoire is of course familiar: "I've Got You Under My Skin", " Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead", "Night and Day", "Anything Goes", "That Old Black Magic" and "Too Darned Hot". Everyone's ears perked up when I played this at RMAF. The playing is crisp (under the direction of Chris Dean), the arrangements are dynamic with nicely placed hard-driving kick drum accents, and Clare sounds, for all intents and purposes, like the fourth Andrews Sister. We should be grateful that someone is taking the time and spending the money to produce a direct to disk record but more grateful that the music lives up to the sonic promise. But next time, get the writing on the jacket's spine going in the right direction! http://www.analogplanet.com/content/tribute-ella-fitzgerald-performed-clare-teal-recorded-direct-disc#DWhvoPyzxrpSm29R.97

Clare Teal - Paradisi Carousel

Size: 98,4 MB
Time: 42:13
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2007
Styles: Jazz/Pop Vocals
Art: Front

01. Baby, I'm Coming Home (3:52)
02. Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying (3:14)
03. Paradisi Carousel (3:31)

08. Stay With Me (4:20)
09. What Love Knows (4:36)
10. Magic Day (3:29)
11. Alone With You (3:58)

With a clutch of 'best vocalist' awards to her name plus plaudits aplenty, Clare Teal is surely now established. Paradisi Carousel is her seventh album, the second since her Sony contract garnered publicity as the most lucrative ever for a British jazz singer. In light of that, it may be no surprise that the music here is as much pop as it is jazz; indeed, Teal herself cites Burt Bacharach, Dusty Springfield and The Carpenters as points of comparison. And rightly so; on the opener, “Baby, I’m Coming Home”, Teal’s phrasing and intonations sound uncannily like Karen Carpenter.

On this evidence, Teal’s voice is heard to best effect on ballads and songs laden with emotion, being perfect to express a sense of loss and yearning as on “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying”. While she easily handles a more bombastic brass-driven arrangement like “Breakout” – which doubtless goes down a storm in concert - its relative lack of emotion does not play to her strengths. The four Teal originals included here demonstrate her growing prowess as a songwriter, and suggest that she writes material ideally suited to those strengths, with the title track and “Stay With Me” being particularly strong.

Teal is renowned for cover versions that reinvent the original – witness her earlier radical rethinking of The Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreaming”. Here, she does something similar with The Four Tops classic “Reach Out (I’ll Be There)”, slowing it down dramatically and changing the mood from one of joyous celebration to hopeful longing. By comparison, her version of Pentangle’s “Light Flight” stays very close to the original; with its complex rhythms, it allows Teal to demonstrate her vocal technique, but this version doesn’t establish its own identity.

Existing fans of Teal are likely to be more than satisfied with this album. It may also appeal to the burgeoning audience for pop-jazz singers such as Norah Jones and Corinne Bailey Rae. ~John Eyles

Except for the duet with Jamie Cullum on the title track and the delicately yodelled country ballad So Blue, these are mostly American Songbook standards in 14 selections for British singer Clare Teal's third album. Though the opening of the duet makes Cullum sound as if he is wrestling for a lower register he doesn't have, the song becomes exhilarating, and confirms the velvety softness and triumphant power that makes Teal a little different from all the other low-volume singers that frequent this neck of the jazz woods. This album has a lot of bounce for a retro set, aided by a lively band playing Martin Litton's bright and propulsive arrangements. Teal is an inventive scat singer; her handling of slow material has a smoky sensuality coupled with a full, luxurious sound that never loses its richness. The arrangements offset the familiarity of the material, and the singer even casts a fresh eye over jazz samba with her restrained account of Mandrugada. A bit too much like dinner jazz for some, but made with skilful devotion.

Clare Teal has proved to be without a doubt, one of the most talented newcomers to hit the Jazz scene in years. Not only a wonderfully gifted singer, but also a very promising, melodic, intuitive and witty writer who's own songs are already being heralded as standards. Orsino's Songs is Clare's second album - the content of which is even richer and exudes more warmth than ever.

Clare is accompanied by her regular band made up of the UK's top mainstream musicians, Martin Litton on Piano; Trevor Whiting on Reeds; Nils Solberg on Guitar, John Day on Bass and Rod Brown on Drums. As well as three very special guests Alan Barnes, Ian Shaw + Malcolm Earl Smith. Martin Litton has excelled himself with the arrangements for this selection of well-known classics and originals. He, like Clare, knows how to reach into the very core of a song and his arrangements display a whole variety of styles and emotions.

Clare puts the success of this harmonious and creative partnership down to the fact that both she and Martin share a birthday and are obviously linked by the 17th moon of Uranus! Orsino's Songs really says it all about Clare. The quality of the performance you on this CD is replicated at every one of her concerts and roadshows. The album is a complete experience from start to finish encompassing all the many facets of her unique talents. It's all there the originality, exuberance, pathos, tenderness and wit.

Clare Teal is one of the UK’s most celebrated and much loved jazz singers, as well as a prolific recording artist and popular BBC Radio 2 broadcaster. To date she has recorded and released 13 albums to public and critical acclaim. Her stunning voice, encyclopaedic knowledge of jazz, swing and big band music, and her innate warmth and wit have made Clare one of the most sought after singers and broadcasters in the country.

After signing to independent label Candid in 2001 and releasing three acclaimed titles, it was Clare’s first album for Sony Jazz which became her breakthrough record. Released in 2004, ‘Don’t Talk’ topped the Jazz charts and entered the UK Top 20, garnering extraordinary plaudits and several awards. She has gone on to release seven more successful albums, most recently her 2014 release ‘In Good Company’ featuring saxophone legend Pee Wee Ellis.

As a live artist, Clare has performed across the length and breadth of the UK and across the globe. Her shows are renowned not only for her stunning vocals and great song choices, but also because she has deservedly developed a reputation as one of our most entertaining and witty performers.

Clare loves working with large and small ensemble groups and performs with orchestras, big bands and most regularly with her trio, in 2013 she formed her own Big band, and a year later created a 16 piece Hollywood Band for a show celebrating the music of Doris Day. She has a particular passion for the Great American Songbook and more recently the Great British Songbook. Her love of the great female singers of our time has led her to develop her show ‘The Divas and Me!’ celebrating the leading lights of the jazz and big band world, including Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland and Anita O’Day.

Highlights of Clare’s live work include opening twice for Liza Minnelli at Kenwood House and the Royal Festival Hall, singing with the BBC Big Band at Proms in the Park, headlining the Bourbon Street tent at Glastonbury Festival, performing regularly at the world renowned Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, storming the Marlborough Jazz Festival with her Big Band and performing with the 100 piece Halle Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall.

A career pinnacle for Clare was producing, presenting and performing her own Prom during the 2014 Proms Season at the Royal Albert Hall. ‘Battle of the Bands Duke Ellington v Count Basie’ was filmed before a capacity crowd, broadcast simultaneously on BBC Radio 2 & 3 and was the most viewed prom of 2014 on BBC Four.

Clare is now a loved and respected broadcaster on the BBC radio 2. She presents her own 2 hour live show on BBC Radio 2 featuring the best of swing and big band music.

It's not really a jazz album, although there's jazz in it, and it's certainly not a "nostalgia" album, even though it opens with a song by Noël Coward and closes with one by Ivor Novello. In fact, this amounts to an imaginative and sometimes quite radical revisiting of 14 British songs, from the early 20th century ("Down by the Sally Gardens") to 2005 (Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars"). Even the sacrosanct "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" comes in for some daring reharmonisation. It's all very unexpected, and only a singer as bright and adventurous as Clare Teal could bring it off - which she does, flawlessly. ~Dave Gelly

When Yorkshire-born singer Clare Teal first surfaced six years back, she sounded like an artist who could deliver a very safe jazz and classic-pop repertoire with a distinctive fizz that came from both technical sophistication and an unequivocal love of the material. Teal grew up fantasising she was Ginger Rogers whirling into the arms of Fred Astaire around the aisles of Keighley shopping centre when she was out with her mum - and that enduring devotion to swing, standards and lyrics about a rosily simplified life remains central to her appeal.

This set marks Teal's move to Universal's W14 imprint (Alison Moyet and Siouxsie Sioux are labelmates), and, of course, it's all tailor-made Michael Parkinson material. Teal's powerful jazz credentials are more to the fore on this album, however, notably in her light-stepping swing over a fast bass-walk on Cheek to Cheek, the Ella Fitzgerald scat-jam at the end, and the Cab Calloway hi-de-ho references in the finale of Moondance. Her clarity and controlled power allow her to make the much-travelled pop ballads Love Hurts and Breaking Up Is Hard to Do her own, but in replacing the sense of desolation in Love for Sale with a kind of plain-speaking resignation, she diminishes its meaning. Some may find many of the other lyrics too cheesy to be delivered without irony, and the Radio 2 vibe too pervasive. But, as always with Teal, she sounds as if she's loving every moment, and for many that will be infectious.~ John Fordham   http://www.theguardian.com/music/2008/feb/22/jazz.shopping1

Recorded in front of an intimate live audience at The Ebenezer Chapel one snowy night in February 2009. This album has a wonderful vibe and captures perfectly the joyous atmosphere of a very special evening.

Having developed an obsession with her grandmother's old Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday 45s at a young age, critically acclaimed vocalist Clare Teal went onto become one of the biggest names on the U.K. contemporary jazz scene. Born in Kildwick, a tiny village near Yorkshire, in 1973, Teal learned to play the piano, clarinet, and electronic organ before studying music at Wolverhampton University, where she discovered her vocal abilities during an impromptu exam. After stints writing jingles and selling advertising space, she signed a deal with jazz specialty label Candid Records, where she released three albums, That's the Way It Is, Orsino's Songs, and The Road Less Travelled. In 2004, she landed the biggest-ever record contract by a U.K. jazz artist with Sony, and scored a Top 20 album with her major-label debut, Don't Talk. In 2005, she became a regular DJ on BBC Radio 2, hosting both the Big Band Special and Friday Night Is Music Night shows, and a year later, won the BBC Jazz Vocalist of the Year. Teal has since released three LPs, 2007's Paradisi Carousel, 2008's Get Happy, and 2009's Live at the Ebenezer Chapel, appeared on Helmut Lotti's Time to Swing, and is set to release her new studio album, Clare Teal Sings the Great British Songbook, in 2011. ~ Jon O'Brien

Our very own Queen of Swing and top jazz singer Clare Teal should need little introduction after over a decade frequenting the National and Jazz charts and filling theatres the length and breadth of the country.

In 'The Divas and Me', Clare celebrates the music of her heroines, the leading lights of the jazz and big band world, paying homage to Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Doris Day and many of their illustrious contemporaries.

Clare demonstrates the influence these characters have had on her own acclaimed catalogue of work. Known for her knowledge and love of the Great American Songbook and more recently The Great British Songbook, with wit and warmth, Clare tells outrageous anecdotes of their extraordinary lives and points to the future of Diva-dom with a few relevant originals and more modern day covers.

Multi award-winning Clare, who hosts two weekly Radio 2 programmes, formed her own label MUD Records in 2009 releasing three critically acclaimed albums Live At Ebenezer Chapel, Hey Ho (a celebration of the Great British Songbook) and And So It Goes and is now poised to release her long awaited first ever Christmas record Jing, Jing-a-Ling.

Clare is a consummate professional with a huge sense of humour and a soft heart. It comes across in this album of classic American songs. She just owns the tracks and does total justice to the writers and composers of the songs she sings. ~Rupert Kirkham/amazon

[3:59] 11. Alone With You

2007 release of Teal's seventh album & her second for Sony Music. "Paradisi Carousel" is a rich, often sublime set of succulent tunes sung by a voice lined with velvet. Teal's voice can best be compared to being a Karen Carpenter for the 21st century, a British Diana Krall. Her loyal fans always knew she had the best voice in the UK, now the world will know too. "I spent an entire year working on this, which, for me, is very unusual," she says. "In the typical jazz tradition, I normally take no more than 6 weeks, so it would have been awful if I didn't have something to show for all those additional months & all that extra effort, don't you think?... Music is a melting pot," Clare says. "And that's what I'm all about, ultimately, a melting pot with 70 years of music at my fingertips". "Paradisi" is Latin for grapefruit and Teal has quite a thing for grapefruit. "It's a much misunderstood fruit," she reasons, "and I thought it was high time somebody stuck up for it!"

Fourth album and major-label debut from British vocalist in love with old-school big band swing and jazz. Although she is being touted as Sony's answer to Jamie Cullum, her sound is much more rooted in tradition. Here she performs a selection of jazzed-up versions of pop and soul classics alongside trad standards and four originals which show why she has been hailed as one the UK's most exciting jazz talents.
