The Bucky Pizzarelli Trio - Three For All

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 64:55
Size: 148.6 MB
Styles: Guitar jazz
Year: 2014
Art: Front

[5:21] 1. All The Things You Are
[7:50] 2. Body And Soul
[5:00] 3. Avalon
[5:41] 4. Snowfall
[5:17] 5. Stompin' At The Savoy
[7:12] 6. If I Had You
[3:01] 7. Stage Fright
[3:08] 8. It's Been A Long, Long Time/Don't Take Your Love From Me
[5:28] 9. Undecided
[3:10] 10. In The Dark
[5:38] 11. I'm Confessin'
[5:31] 12. Three For All
[2:38] 13. I Got Rhythm

Whose line is it anyway? No matter. Whether it’s jazz patriarch Bucky Pizzarelli or his son, fellow seven-string guitar master John, fashioning melodic embellishments and spinning single-note improvisations on Three for All, the level of musicianship is consistently high. What’s more, the same can be said for guitarist Ed Laub’s knowing support, scarcely a surprise given his long association with père Pizzarelli.

Not surprising, too, are the songs chosen for this date. “Body and Soul,” “I Got Rhythm,” “All the Things You Are” and “Avalon” are among the vintage pop classics, while lesser-known tunes, including the Dick McDonough-Carl Kress treat “Stage Fright,” round out the collection. Even the most weathered selections, however, have a fresh allure after Bucky and John get their fingers on them. Strings of choruses dart along, then dovetail, then dart again. Blue notes tweak the melodies, harmonic substitutions add texture and color, tricky contrapuntal passages abound, and frequent surges of rhythmic propulsion make for some exhilarating moments. Offsetting the most vibrant trio performances are some soulful interludes, a dash of melancholy lyricism and the occasional, deftly executed duet, including a Bucky and Ed pairing. ~Mike Joyce

A Classical concerto performed by the Orchestra and also American Songbook Standards performed by Bucky Pizzarelli and Ed Laub (guitar duets)

Here’s another gem from Bucky Pizzarelli and Arbors Records. It opens with a classical ensemble by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedeso: Tedesco Concerto No. 1 in D, opus 99. This work is about twenty-two minutes long and Bucky is accompanied by a ten-piece ensemble with players whose careers encompass both classical and jazz.

Remainder of the recordings on this CD are from the Great American Songbook. Most, if not all, the songs will be familiar to the average jazzfan. They include: Send in the Clowns, Laura, Stardust, Satin Doll, I’m Through with Love and I’ll Never Be the Same. The recording concludes with that great Gordon Jenkins tune, Goodbye, which was for many years Benny Goodman’s closing theme.

The jazz section of this recording features guitarist Ed Laub accompanying Bucky. Ed is a regular performer and former student of Bucky’s. They both play seven-string guitars. I called Bucky to get some background on this recording. He told me how the classical group was assembled for the recording and gave me some background on his long association with both Ed Laub and Ed Berger.

This album represents a collection of songs that I have played over the years with my long time partner and friend, Bucky Pizzarelli. As my mentor for 4 decades he has been a major influence on my style and approach to music.

My first lesson was not as much about playing the guitar as it was understanding his philosophy about playing and performing. He said "your most important responsibility as a musician is to make the the other people you are playing with sound as good as possible...its not about you!" Over the years my role as Bucky's accompanist has always been to enhance every note he plays and it has earned me the respect of other musicians that I work with.

I have always loved to sing and on this CD i have gotten the opportunity to demonstrate some of the tunes that I do so often in my live performances. I am hoping this is a jumping off point to record a purely guitar/vocal cd just by myself.

The addition of Gene Bertoncini and Paul Meyers on two of the tracks was an extra added bonus I hadn't planned on, but so glad that it worked out that way!

Bucky, Gene and Paul are all friends first and it meant so much to me that they were excited to help with my first CD. ~Ed Laub
