The Dan Barrett, Enric Peidro Quintet - And the Angels Swing

Styles: Trombone And Saxophone Jazz
Year: 2018
File: MP3@320K/s
Time: 51:45

Swing is hard to define, but it’s the difference between ripe cherries and a cherry candy “with natural flavors” synthesized in a laboratory. I’m happy to report that the CD that pairs tenor saxophonist Enric Peidro and trombone legend Dan Barrett is satisfying swinging jazz throughout. In fact, it reaches new heights in the most refined yet impassioned ways. Let’s start at the back of the bandstand, or the bottom of the band (no offense intended), the fine rhythm section. I didn’t know pianist Richard Busiakewicz, bassist Lluis Llario, or drummer Carlos “Sir Charles” Gonzalez before this recording, but I love them. Their swing is unforced and easy; they know how, what, when, why, and when not to . . .

But before I write more, here’s a sonic sample, celebrating both Vic Dickenson (the composer) and his horticultural endeavors: The question of what is “authentic” is treacherous, because we defend our subjectivities with a lover’s defensive ardor, but that performance feels both expressive and controlled in the best ways. Forget for a moment the warm twenty-first century recording technology. If I heard that track, coming after a 1945 Don Byas-Buck Clayton Jamboree 78 and a Mel Powell Vanguard session, I would not think VIC’S SPOT an impostor. Swing is more than being able to play the notes or wear the hat; it’s a world-view, and this quintet has it completely.

Barrett remains a master not only of the horn, but of what I’d call “orchestral thinking,” where he’s always inventing little touches (on the page or on the stand) to make any performance sound fuller, have greater rhythmic emphasis and harmonic depth. I’ve seen him do this on the spot for years, and his gentle urgency makes this quintet even more a convincing working band than it would have been if anyone took his place. And as a trombonist, he really has no peer: others go in different directions and woo us, but he is immediately and happily himself, totally recognizable, with a whole tradition at his fingertips as well as a deep originality.

But Dan would be the first one to say that he is not the whole show: this CD offers us a swinging little band. We’ve all heard recordings, some of them dire, where the visiting “star” is supported by the “locals,” who are not up to the star’s level: many recorded performances by Ben Webster immediately come to mind. And the Angels Swing is the glorious countertruth to such unbalanced affairs, because Enric Peidro, who was new to me before I heard this CD, is a masterful player. He’s no one’s clone I couldn’t predict what his next phrase would be or where his line of thought would go and although he is not cautious, he never puts a foot wrong. You can hear his gliding presence on the track above, and for me he summons up two great and under-praised players, primarily Harold Ashby, but also a cosmopolitan Paul Gonsalves with no rough edges. He is a fine intuitive ensemble player, with an easy sophistication that charms the ear. I think of the way Ruby Braff appeared in the early Fifties: someone not afraid to play the melody, to improvise in heartfelt ways, to eschew the harder aspects of “modernism” without being affected in any reactionary ways. https://jazzlives.wordpress.com/tag/vanguard-records/

Third album by the swinging team formed by trombonist Dan Barrett and tenor player Enric Peidro. As usual they swing really hard together and respective their tones blend as bread and butter, creating a unique and gorgeous sound that a jazz critic recently described as "medicine for sore ears". Backed by a smooth rhythm section, led by the excellent Richard Busiakiewicz on piano, the two horns keep their "conversational" approach to soloing heard in their previous albums.

Its a joy to hear how their singing soloing lines and phrasing complement each other perfectly. In short this is a new release that both complements and its the perfect following to their previous Cds, as the band keeps intact his "modus operandi".A choice that makes perfect sense cause this unusual two horn team (unusual as they come from different backgrounds, countries and generations) really excels at what they do, so as someone said rightfully "if its not broken, don't fix it".Looking forward to their fourth album together!!

Tenor saxophonist, Enric Peidro is a self-taught musician. He began his journey of becoming a professional musician at age fourteen. Peidro’s sound and phrasing are deeply rooted in the swing-era, and he has often been touted as the “keeper of the flame” among classic jazz lovers all over Spain. His unpretentious approach is the cornerstone of his sound, firmly footed in the traditional jazz idiom. As a leader he has recorded fourteen CDs under his own name and contributed to approximately 35 CDs and counting as a sideman. Peidro’s latest work is titled Keep That Swing in Your Soul. He is joined by Paul Evans: trumpet; Pedro Ortuño: trombone; Richard Busiakiewicz: piano; Andrés Lizón: bass and Simone Zaniol: drums.

Opening up with Lester Young’s “Tickle Toe,” the swinging sextet makes a joyful sound that is exciting and authentic. A piano figure from Busiakiewicz leads to the well-arranged melody. Peidro solos first, his time-feel and tone are sublime. His lines flow through the harmony with ease and authority. Evans’ solo follows, his rhythmic playfulness evokes a spirited feeling. Busiakiewicz’s solo statement is like glass, shimmering rhythm and smooth lines. The short chorus is excellent, sharing space with Zaniol to speak his musical language on the skins. This band is all about swing and beautifully played melodies through an exciting arrangement.

“Indiana” begins with a cleanly played horn figure above the rhythm section’s hits. Instantly the clarity and balance of the band can be heard. When the well-known melody enters, it instantly signals this arrangement is authentic in character and phrasing. The band is swinging! The arrangement is full of written backgrounds and sections that give space to both the soloist and ensemble playing. The writing is excellent. Peidro’s solo tone is smooth and warm, as his lines clearly define the chord structures. In fact, all the soloist are first-rate. The best part of this track is the stimulating horn solos. Evans and Peidro get more time in the spotlight and their playing is captivating.

What Peidro has created is a lovely adoration of traditional jazz, played at a highly creative and poignantly articulate level. His relentless commitment to traditional jazz is expanded by his desire to carve out his personal sound in the idiom. His language on the saxophone is inspired and his fluidity is seamless. Keep That Swing in Your Soul is aptly titled and joyfully executed. A welcomed addition to the jazz cannon. Spanish sax player Enric Peidro is one of the most active musicians in the European Classic Jazz/Swing Scene. He leads his own bands and often teams up with some of the best international musicians in this style.

Influenced by tenor sax masters of the Swing-Era (Hawkins, Young,Webster) His work has received great praise by the media, regarding Peidro as an inventive player with a beautiful sound. https://enricpeidro.bandcamp.com/album/make-someone-happy

The name may be hard to pronounce (try Busha-kevitch) but Richard’s playing is certainly easy on the ear! He started playing the piano at the age of six, and by his late teens was performing frequently in top London hotels and restaurants, and starting to become known on the jazz scene. Richard is now recognized as one of the country’s top jazz pianists, performing not only with other leading British players but with many visiting American musicians including some of the biggest names in jazz: Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Bob Wilber, Art Farmer, Harry Allen and Ken Peplowski. Richard was also a member of the Ray Gelato Giants for ten years, touring extensively both in this country and abroad. With this band, Richard played at Paul McCartney’s wedding, at Bryan Adams’ private at-home party, and for Prince Charles’ birthday at The Ritz in front of the Queen and other members of the royal family.

As well as being a fantastic jazz pianist, Richard is also a sensitive cocktail pianist, the difference being that whereas a jazz player will build his own improvisations on a song, a cocktail pianist will merely embellish the tune, keeping it recognizable and familiar. Between 2002 and 2009 Richard's cocktail piano skills were heard regularly at London's exclusive Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner. Currently, Richard performs regularly at the Boisdale Group of restaurants in London, and since November 2011 performs weekly at restaurateur Richard Caring's new flagship steakhouse '34 Grosvenor Square' in London's Mayfair.

Richard’s repertoire covers what is known as the Great American Songbook numbers penned by writers such as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Lerner and Loewe, etc which started life in Broadway shows and Hollywood musicals but then went on to become the core repertoire of artists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. Where necessary, Richard can provide his own professional quality stage piano and our quote covers playing for up to two hours over a three-hour stay. Although the demo tracks and our quote are for Richard playing solo, he can also add bass and drums if a jazzier set is required. https://www.functionjunction.co.uk/act/richard-busiakiewicz

A self taught musician,Peidro began playing tenor at the age of fourteen.A couple of years later he was playing on several blues and rhythm and blues bands. His interest in Jazz developed quickly and since then,Peidro has remained loyal to his musical heros: the big-toned tenors in Jazz, like Ben Webster,Don Byas or Gene Ammons and specially the Texas tenor school of Jacquet,Cobb,Tate,Johnson..etc

Although his sound and phrasing are deeply rooted in the swing-era,his approach is so natural and genuine that he has achieved popularity as a real “keeper of the flame” among the classic jazz lovers all over Spain. Often reviewed as an “outsider”,a “rara avis” or “an stylist swinmming agains the current” by jazz critics who appreciate his honest, unpretentious approach and invariably point out the richness of his tenor sound. https://musicians.allaboutjazz.com/enricpeidro

Fourth CD by the Swingtet led by Spanish tenor player Enric Peidro. This new album was recorded live over two nights ( February 7 & 8/ 2019) in Jazzazza Jazz Club, a well-known Jazz venue in Murcia (Spain) and captures the Swingtet in a live setting showing all the energy this band is capable to deliver in his performances, together with his usual elegant, classy approach: Two qualities that have made this band very popular among swing and mainstream fans as well as lindy hop and balboa dancers all over Europe. Usually a sextet, the Swingtet was enhanced into an eight piece band for this recording, with the addition of New York- based guitar player and big band leader Glenn Crytzer (who was touring Spain with Peidro's band at the time of the recording) as well as alto player Simon Taylor.

In the liner notes of the Cd, one of the most renowned jazz critics in Spain (Mario Benso) points out the sax player's compromise on making real, authentic mainstream/swing music always trying to be creative and imaginative, avoiding a mere imitation of the great musicians of the past he admires: "Live At Jazzazza collects the exceptional work of a handful of musicians, with great talent wich are capable of insufflating truthfulness to everything they play. And, until someone proves otherwise, that's what jazz is about, more than any stylistic discussion or debate: about determining your own truth in what you play. Nothing more and nothing less" (Mario Benso/Live at Jazzazza Liner notes) https://enricpeidro.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-jazzazza

In today's world of barnstorming Big Band dance groups and conservatory modern jazz ensembles, it can be easy to forget the laid-back side of Swing. The breathy, reedy, after-hours lilting of sax greats like Prez, Hodges, and Webster. The intimate musical conversations of virtuosos chilling like close friends, like family. The rhythm section sitting so far in the pocket you either want to get up and dance, or just lean back, sip a cocktail, and float in it. Enric Peidro and Jonathan Stout have clearly not forgotten. Peidro, as usual, plays the "plumbing" like butter, and Stout, unsurprisingly, turns his guitar into the perfect companion. They lilt, they swing, they chill like family. This album is 14 beautiful, living, small-group swing songs, with all the glory of modern fidelity, and the passion of new voices honoring their pioneers. It's not just music for dancing it's music for dancing effortlessly. https://enricpeidro.bandcamp.com/album/sweet-as-bear-meat

The names of Jonathan Stout and Enric Peidro sure sound very familiar to the swing fans all over the world: Both are not only well-known musicians, highly respected players on their respective instruments, but also experienced bandleaders in their own right: Stout, based in California leads the Campus Five, one of the most in-demand bands at Lindy Hop and dance Festivals all over the world. From his headquarters in the east coast of Spain, Peidro also travels internationally very often, either as a soloist or bringing his high voltage swing combo, the "Swingtet" to all kind of audiences.

In late autumnn 2019 Stout, responding to Peidro's invitation, came to Spain in between two Campus Five European gigs and joined Peidro's band for a string of gigs on a two-week tour over Spain. From their very first gig together, and never having met before, the sparks flew in between Stout and Peidro. The rapport and understanding they developed all over the tour, both in and out of the stage was really "Groove at first sight" as they have appropriately titled this Cd The album was recorded, -"In the old-fashioned way we'd like, in Peidro's words"- over a 5-hour recording session, with all the band "cookin'" together in one room, and with no edits at all.

In fact, most of the takes chosen for the album were first takes, for a solid reason: there were no second takes on half of the selections!!! The recording session was also taped on video. You can check the videos by clicking in the "video" link beside the title of each tune When listening to the Cd the understanding and rapport in between the two musicians as well as with Peidro's regular -and hard -swinging'!- rhythm section is more than obvious. Not in vain Stout and Peidro share a deep love, passion and respect for the very same musical language: the swing, classic jazz of the 30's and 40s. Consecuently, a good-natured, friendly vibe of mutual respect and relaxation, all wrapped up in a extremely laid-back atmosphere spices all the Cd from beginning to end, and for sure its a welcome addition to contemporary swing collections. https://enricpeidro.bandcamp.com/album/groove-at-first-sight

"This album is a must-have for any maistream jazz lover as there are not many chances to hear this kind of jazz nowadays, even less performed with such aplomb, taste and elegant creativity. The "dream team" line up includes such luminaries as american trombone legend Dan Barrett (Benny Goodman,Woody Herman, Buck Clayton among many others) who shines throughout the recording with his lyrical solos joined by the more than apt partner-in-crime Spanish tenorman Enric Peidro whose breathy, gorgeous sax sound and clever yet singable lines are the perfect counterpoint to Barrett's melodic approach. Its a pure joy to listen to Barrett and Peidro and their laid-back, conversation-like, unnassuming aproach wich makes you think on two old friends sharing a drink while chatting about their favourite movie or fishing spot. Australian bass player and singer Nicki Parrott greatly contributes to the overall results with her swinging bass lines, perfect note choice and timing, and also with a few vocals delivered with her usual class. British piano player Richard Busiakiewicz proves himself to be an outstanding musician: the way he comps to solos is simply brilliant, bringing to mind greats like Red Garland or Winton Kelly and his solos are both flawless and swingin all the way through.

To round up this extraordinary team, french drummer Guillaume Nouaux shows extensively why he's one of the best jazz (classic jazz if you want) drummers in the scene today: never too busy and always swingin with great savoir-faire (not in vain he's french!!) he proves himself a great soloist too, over the many solo spots he has in the recording. The choice of material is pretty well balanced in between lesser-known tunes as well as very popular material: is really something to hear how these brilliant musicians handle the challenge of playing some over-exposed numbers like "A" Train, C Jam blues, Love and a few others. No doubt as Count Basie once said: -its not the tune what really matters, but what you can do with it- Needless to say they get away with it with brilliance and a great deal of honesty too: all the recording transpires a great sense of well-natured camaraderie and friendship (the album was recorded after a long tour over Spain) and there's no fireworks or showing-off procedures.Just the opposite: what matters here is MUSIC with capital letters and sure there's a lot of that to be found in this extraordinary album.Enjoy listening and lets hope to have a second one soon! .(J.Steyner.Album liner notes) https://enricpeidro.bandcamp.com/album/international-classic-jazz-all-stars

The Ray Gelato, Enric Peidro Quintet - With All Due Respect

Throughout 10 Jazz songs without additives and brimming with swing, interaction and complicity, we attend a "saxophonistic" party where the two tenors of Peidro and Gelato, with their full and exuberant sounds, although perfectly easy to distinguish, engage in fluids and exciting musical dialogues - always exquisitely backed by an impeccable rhythmic section - celebrating at all times, but with "due respect" the legacy of their idols of which both saxophonists are more than worthy disciples: not a single one is perceived on the album. iota of nostalgia or pale imitation. On the contrary, the creativity and immediacy of the discourse of both tenors and the general enjoyment that is perceived throughout the entire CD by the quintet, makes it clear that we are dealing with musicians versed in a classic Jazz language that they use naturally to express yourself within an expressive and dynamic palette that is more than enviable. https://lamarinaplaza.com/ca/evento/jazz-concierto-presentacion-del-disco-with-all-due-respect-por-ray-gelato-enric-peidro-quintet-denia/

Since they performed their first concert together in 2016, these two saxophonists, who in their own right are instrumentalists of reference for all lovers of the saxophone in its most classical or “mainstream” aspect, have not stopped laughing as often as their agendas have allowed it, since they are not only united by a great friendship but also an enormous musical and stylistic connection. In this first album together, recorded in 2019, Gelato and Peidro wanted to pay tribute "with due respect" to their teachers in the tenor sax, who are none other than the great tenors of the 30s and 40s of the last century and their first disciples. Thus, throughout this peculiar and passionate album, which the critics describe as "high voltage swing not suitable for the faint of heart", both tenor saxophones "dialogue" with forceful and passion accompanied by a luxurious rhythmic section on an extraordinary and unusual selection of topics all written, wi thout exception, by some of his teachers. Thus, in the album there are compositions by Hawkins, Webster, by as, lockjaw and many others in an album so in U su al as interesting and essential for those who enjoy the sounds of the classical tenor sax in jazz. https://www.amazon.es/all-respect-Gelato-Enric-Peidro-Quintet/dp/B07YNKWR4N
