In Holland ( the Netherlands) I have been living and working with a WIDE variety of musicians. What is so amazing about living here, is that there is for me a lot of freedom to explore my voice and my own musical sensitivities.
I was singing with a swing band Dr. Bernard and his Swing band, and this band focused on Benny goodman style music. Which , being a dancer ages ago. made me very interested in singing on the beat, whereby most torch songs are sung with a back phrasing. I really enjoyed being the one to set a tempo and push the band. This skill became handy when I took on this project of Sax, piano and voice. All lead instruments, all of us soloists, all of us creating tension by phrasing behind the beat.
I felt it was my responsibility sometimes to sing ON THE beat , to create variety.
For Francesca ( our lovely Italian/Roman) pianist the task was of course heavy on her to be the rhythm section,
Scott is known for his smooth languid delivery. We didn't really ask him to phrase differently.. We didn't dare! ha ha.

But as far as variety is concerned, I felt it was also nice to sing and play in layers, for instance in First song and some other tunes, I sing some phrases above to color the solo or Thicken the sound layer.

Being young people playing the oldies, I am really proud of the modal treatment of some of the tunes. I think for this I really like Get out of Town. Francesca and I played with the double time feel but then also extending the bars. The double time tempo really comes in the B part. and I took the liberty of adjusting the lyrics ( her also phrasing forward) to get all the lyrical meaning without rushing.

In every album I make there is always One original tune and on this album it's Light at Heart. These were lyrics that I made for a colleague of mine. Anne Chris who decided to write her own lyrics, so I took the lyrics to Dirk Balthaus who I worked with for 5 years and on the album JuzzFlirtin, and he created the melody to this tune. But we only made one album together. I asked Francesca to play it, and she really dug it.

Francesca is a sort of italian, Blossom Dearie, and I thought it was a shame to not ask her to sing a tune so we added But not For me, for fun. I liked also adjusting my voice tone to blend with her mood.

Four Brothers , is Francesca's favorite, and our snapping really helps to hear her groove. Scott just whipped out the harmony at the session.
What I really like about Scott is that we only rehearsed once, and the interpretations and solos are truly intuitive and not overly spoken.

First Song, I love the lyrics, but I also love the melody, and I like the original key which is difficult to sing the lyrics to convincingly as it is so far out of the speaking voice for me. So.. I just hummed it.. a bit nasal so it would penetrate. It has a spiritual quality. Like in a church or a boys choir like feel. I suppose it's a compliment, but one of the first listeners said about this tune, " When I die, I want this played at my funeral. So beautiful! " now can you get more spiritual than that.

This Album's idea was brought about by Scott Hamilton's mananger in the Benelux area. Jerry Steyger, who is also the manager of the Bernard Berkhout Band. He said this is the First Time Scott has recorded a trio album without a rhythm section. So I hope it is worthy of that debut. I am certainly honored. Both parties on the album are true professionals and it was a pleasure to work with them. Quickly, intuitively and nice vibes.

My inspirations for this album are definitely Anita O'day, Kurt Elling, and I suppose a bit of Blossom Dearie too!
Hope you enjoy listening.

06. Summer Dream (5:32)
07. The Wolf (4:37)
08. Wildish (4:45)
09. Words (5:03)

After 7 years of singing on other people's albums, Léah Kline emerges with her 2nd album of originals. ( First being "Juzz Flirtin")
Here we feel a much quieter version of Kline, confident, lower tones. She draws the listener in and creates a very intimate, listenable album of lyrics, stories and music. The result is a New Cool Jazz feel on a bed of grooves that tastes of soul, blues and jazz from the 70's music scene.

Cord Heineking (bass) has arranged and composed most of the songs on the album. The basic rhythm section is bass, drums, keyboard, rhodes or piano. Percussion, guitar and vocal harmonies are used to color in. The multi-layering in each track lends itself well to high quality headphones listening. Breaking with the jazz tradition of instrumental solos, this album keeps itself tastefully painting a soundscape around the lyrics, using space and quietness to deliver the mood.
"This Precious Life" appears to be an ode to the fragility , beauty and humor of our modern life.

JuzzFlirtin is a brand new band with original compositions by Léah Kline and Dirk Balthaus. Their lyrical melodies flirt with different genres. JuzzFlirtin transforms a regular music concert into a synergetic explosion drawing from jazz, drama, funk, rock, Brazilian music and Latin styles. These five passionate musicians play and compose music with the goal to “move and groove” an audience. Their engaging performance energy onstage, combined with the music’s crossover sound, appeal to a wider and younger audience target group. Published in Jazzflits year 5, number 10 (2007) ~ Frank A. Huser

‘Juzz Flirtin’ is the exceptionally listenable result of a rendezvous between vocalist Léah Kline and pianist/composer Dirk Balthaus. A meeting that caused musical sparks. Her lyrics inspired his music and vice versa. It’s obvious to hear that the American Léah Kline, who lives in the Netherlands since 2000, has her roots in the theater (singing, dancing and cabaret). Her narrating qualities are impressive and inviting. The playing of the band (Dirk Balthaus piano, Cord Heineking doublebass, Sebastiaan Kaptein drums and Yuchi Cordoba percussion) perfectly supports this. Even in the musical accompaniment the “story telling” is emphasized. Ingenious arrangements, intentionally intense intermezzos and playful solos give the numbers extra cachet and support the lyrics in an all round excellent manner. Kline is a vocalist of scale. Out of many examples, the vulnerably sung “Minuano’ (music Pat Metheny, lyrics Kurt Elling), is proof of this fact. She possesses a good diction, a beautiful alto timbre, feel for dynamics and timing plus an excellent technique. The Cd consists of numbers in up-tempo and swing but also ballads and jazzy arranged, more or less theatrically colored titles with funk and Latin influences. A not to miss flirt! Leah Kline's debut CD certainly is a Playground of fresh and creative new ideas that just simply add up to a lot of fun for the listener. Someone would have to be hard pressed to not like this recording by the Amsterdam-based Kline and her supporting group of Los Angeles-based jazz musicians. What they have assembled is a collection of new and unique arrangements that provide a fresh take on jazz standards such as "Doodlin,'" "Prelude to a Kiss," "Peel Me a Grape" and pop songs like "Wives and Lovers," "Hernando's Hideaway," "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend," and "Tenderly." Kline also adds one original to the mix with her lyrics on "Call of the Muse," set to music composed by Joost van de Knaap.

One of the fun elements of this recording is Kline's voice. Her presentation possesses a certain bluesy swagger with a Mae West "Why don't you come up and see me some time" attitude. These qualities are most evident on the opening track, an arrangement of Horace Silver's "Doodlin'" with vocalese by Jon Hendricks. Kline negotiates large mouthfuls of lyrics with insouciant aplomb and hipness. The "come hither" part of Kline's musical personality shines most brightly in the arrangement of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale." Pianist John Rangel's Latin-styled arrangement and the somewhat melodramatic introduction show off what must be an exciting stage presence for Kline when she performs live.

Her performance on the Johnny Hodges/Duke Ellington classic "Prelude to a Kiss" turns this romantic ballad on a tangent from Hodges' familiar excruciating ecstasy to more of a lover's sweet and gentle caress, presented lovingly and simply with only Rangel's piano accompanying. Another unique approach is Kline's rendition of "I've Got Rhythm," accompanied only by the rhythm of drummer Lorca Hart. There are also some passages where Kline demonstrates her ability to scat sing when trading fours with drummer Hart.

With all of the jazz singers out and about today, Leah Kline is certainly one worthy of notice. Her debut CD is certainly a playground of great creativity, musicianship, and fun. I look forward to her next recording project. ~ Craig W.Hurst

The new CD is here, now my production number 7 For the first time we present a native of Los Angeles singer Léah Kline in a phonogram - some of you have certainly already experienced live, accompanied by Christian Bleiming boogie trio. A review of my new CD. Christian Bleiming - Boogie In My Heart (Acoustic Music / Rough Trade) Alone for the fact that pianist Christian Bleiming content with boogie woogieconcerned, is worth a special mention. But Boogie Woogie is in this country an almost forgotten branch of the Rockn'n'Roll, jazz in the broadest sense. then when the music like that on the 16 tracks of Bleimings now seventh CD yet so entertaining and comes across as warm here's the thing already long on the credit side.

Weightless, a title for the next swing, also supported by Léah Kline on vocals. Amandus reason (guitar), Erkan Özdemir (bass) and Peter Samland and Henk Punter (both drums) agree just falling with a. , the self-proclaimed "King of Westphalia Boogie" from Münster recorded the album earlier this year in Osnabrück locals Luther house. Another reason the atmospherically dense, very fluid and lightweight . Bleimings to like acting Groove "Boogie In My Heart" is as entertaining and amusing as its title - Boogie Woogie uncomplicated and direct Art is what I call entertainment. A comprehensive booklet with photos and detailed liner notes by Gerd Wieben there on top of that. "Boogie In My Heart" is one of a dying genre of music. ~Translate by google
