Jim Tomlinson originally intended to make this outing an instrumental CD, but when he had the opportunity to work with his wife, vocalist Stacey Kent, he quickly adapted most of the session to include her. The English tenor saxophonist chose time-tested material from standards and a few bossa novas, playing all of them with a lyrical sound reminiscent of the late giant Stan Getz, particularly in "'Manha de Carnaval" and"Corcovado." Kent's sweet voice complements her husband's band very well, catching the playfulness of "If I Were a Bell" and savoring the thoughtful tempo of "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top." Pianist David Newton, one of Europe's most underrated jazz pianists, anchors the rhythm section (with bassist Dave Chamberlain and drummer Matt Skelton), providing perfect backgrounds for the couple, with his lush playing in "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" especially standing out. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-lyric-mw0000466832

Stacey Kent is a jazz singer in the mould of the greats, with a legion of fans worldwide, a host of honors and awards including a Grammy nomination, album sales approaching 2 million, Gold, Double-Gold and Platinum-sellingalbums that have reached a series of No. 1 chart positions during the span of her career. Raised and schooled on the east coast of the USA, this comparative literature graduate with a musical bent, travelled to Europe to further her studies. In 1990, through a series of twists of fate, she found herself in London where she enrolled in a graduate music program at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and where she met her future husband and musical collaborator, Jim Tomlinson.

Kent's musical journey began in her childhood with piano lessons. An unusually keen ear and true voice lead her to participate in school musical productions, and throughout her time at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, she could often be heard singing at impromptu musical events in the college's cafe. However, nothing suggested the shift in career that has propelled her to international recognition. With a catalogue of 10 studio albums including the Platinum-selling, GRAMMY-nominated 'Breakfast On The Morning Tram' (EMI/BLUE NOTE 2007) and an impressive list of collaborations, Stacey has graced the stages of more than 50 countries over the course of her career.

Jim too was going down an academic path, but their meeting was to change everything and led them to pursue their love of music together. Stacey and Jim's dedication has resulted in success first in England and subsequently France and Europe and now she is a household name in jazz circles worldwide. Their union, both musically and maritally is the stuff of dreams and their work together just gets more and more impressive. They are 'as one' in everything they undertake and their joint musicianship is the perfect combination for their talents. This Vignette shows not only the captivating voice of Stacey herself but also the impressive talents of Jim Tomlinson - saxophonist, arranger and producer par excellence.

(4:22) 12. Manhattan
(3:00) 13. Bali Ha I

Stacey Kent is back, with her regular combo, for an engaging tribute to Richard Rodgers. In addition to routinely covered songs like "It Never Entered My Mind" and "Bewitched," the Britain-based vocalist looks to the South Pacific book and comes up with two items seldom performed in a jazz context "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "Bali Ha'i." Happily, these are two of the best cuts; the former, with its burlesque-ish 6/8 middle section, works amazingly well. The sound of the disc is strong, highlighting the nicely varied arrangements and the innate charm of Kent's puckish voice. There are a few downsides: a sluggish "Thou Swell," an aimless bossa nova reading of "It Might as Well Be Spring," and a general overabundance of ballads. But swinging tracks like "This Can't Be Love" and "My Heart Stood Still" (the latter spiced with tasty chord substitutions) make up for the lukewarm spots. ~ David R.Adler http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-love-again-mw0000018773

(3:28) 14. I Get Along Without You Very Well
(2:31) 15. You're the Top
(1:16) 16. Bookends

Wrapping her sweet voice around songs by male singers she admires, Stacey Kent delivers another pleasant and low-key album with The Boy Next Door. Kent's tribute choices range from traditional pop (Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett) to mainstream jazz instrumentalists (Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie) to the softer side of rock (James Taylor, Simon and unmentioned in the liner notes Garfunkel). With a gentle conviction akin to early Blossom Dearie without the cheeky flair, the album makes for breezy listening. The 16 tracks don't differ enough in tone, making the album a bit too long, but individual moments of warm openhearted excellence make it worthwhile. The sentimentality of "Bookends" or "'Tis Autumn" suit her precious delivery well, while the sly moments of "Makin' Whoopee" feel out of the singer's reach.

The bandmembers stay out of the way for the most part, waiting for their solos rather than interacting much with Kent. Drummer Matt Home's light but lively style is especially accommodating and guitarist Colin Oxley's percussive take on "Too Darn Hot" ends up being the album's greatest moment. ~ Jeff Jeffries http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-boy-next-door-mw0000314615

Perhaps best known for his work as the compelling counter-voice to singer and wife Stacey Kent, saxophonist Jim Tomlinson is recognized as a distinctive saxophone voice in his own right. His new CD demonstrates a huge step forward in technique and interpretation, highlighted by the obvious empathy between the band members - Colin Oxley, John Pearce, Simon Thorpe and Chris Wells. But why Brazil? Jim says: 'I chose these tunes because I love them and I had gotten into the habit of only playing tunes that I love...though Joao and Astrud Gilberto were the definitive performers of the idiom, Antonio Carlos Jobim is the greatest composer of Bossa Novas and his tunes are unavoidable and utterly desirable when compiling such an album. Features Stacey Kent on vocals.

Stacey Kent - Tenderly

(3:26) 10. In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning
(3:57) 11. That s All
(2:53) 12. If I Had You

Tenderly marks, for Stacey Kent, a return to the Great American Songbook for which she first became known. The performances on Tenderly are clearly on another level to those of her earlier standards albums. There is a natural ease and confidence in the minimalist approach that she has honed over the years. Not a single extraneous note or gesture disturbs her daringly exposed performances. The pure and quiet intensity of these interpretations reveals both the song and the artist with astonishing vividness. Along with the title song, the album features such classics as Tangerine, That s All and Gershwin s Embraceable You.

American singer, Stacey Kent, is an artist who is so hard to categorize, she almost deserves a category to herself. A sublime interpreter of the Great American Songbook, Chanson and Bossa Nova, whose repertoire extends well beyond her jazz roots, fluent in French and Portuguese, she doesn t so much transcend genre as much as render the idea redundant. Each element of her personal sound is so perfectly integrated that one never feels as if she is crossing any boundaries of genre. Her 2007 album, Breakfast on the Morning Tram, achieved platinum status and was nominated for a Grammy Award. She s won countless other awards including Jazz Vocalist of the Year at the 2001 BBC Jazz Awards and French Chevalier Dans L Ordre Des Arts et Des Lettres in 2010. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=10096664&style=music&fulldesc=T

A really wonderful collaboration – completely unexpected, and a fresh chapter in the career of both artists too! The set was done in celebration of Marcos Valle's 50 years in music – and features Marcos himself on acoustic piano and a bit of vocals, Stacey Kent on lead vocals, and some guest tenor sax from Jim Tomlinson! The setting is lean, mostly small group backing, but full of feeling – thanks partly to Stacey's expressive vocal performance, but also to Valle's still-great sense of timing and tone – which makes the arrangements very different than Kent's usual bag. Stacey really takes the vocal lead on most of the record – and the bossa setting is a great one for her style – and arrangements are by Valle and Jesse Sadoc, who leads the combo on trumpet.

The release of this new album is supported by a worldwide tour that includes such prestigious venues as Ronnie Scott's Club in London (30th sept â 4th Oct), Lâ Olympia in Paris (15th Nov) and Birdland in New York (3rd-8th Dec). The American singer's new album includes both original compositions and classic songs from the biggest names in Brazilian Music, including Tôm Jobim, Dori Caymmi, Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal, who performs on two of the album's tracks, including his own, O Barquinho.

Signed to Blue Note/EMI France now known as Parlophone Music France in 2007, Stacey Kent's EMI albums have sold more than half a million copies worldwide, including the Grammy-nominated, Platinum-selling, Breakfast on the Morning Tram, Raconte-Moi and Dreamer in Concert.

This new album, produced and arranged by Jim Tomlinson, finds Stacey Kent visiting some of her favorite Bossa Nova songs, including This Happy Madness, One Note Samba, How Insensitive, alongside original songs composed by Jim Tomlinson, in collaboration with Kazuo Ishiguro (The Changing Lights, Waiter, Oh Waiter, The Summer We Crossed Europe In The Rain), the team that wrote The Ice Hotel and Breakfast On The Morning Tram. There are also collaborations with Portuguese poet Antonio Ladeira (Mais Uma Vez, A Tarde) and French lyricist Bernie Beaupãre,  the writer of Raconte-Moi and Venus Du Melo.

It is hard to categorise Stacey Kent. An American who speaks fluent French as well as Portuguese, Italian and German, she is able to transcend genre and national boundaries with an ease that few other artists can. Having recently recorded a live album in Rio De Janeiro with Marcos Valle, in celebration of his 50th year in music, Stacey's musical journey has brought her ever closer to Brazilian music. With The Changing Lights, Kent re-imagines her truly personal sound and style through the prism of Brazilian music.

Kent's new album, The Changing Lights is a milestone for her and the highlight of a 15-year recording career from a gifted jazz singer with not only an exquisite voice but also an unmatched talent for storytelling.  www.staceykent.com

The grand old man of British jazz, trumpeter and bandleader Humphrey Lyttelton spearheaded the postwar trad jazz revival before renouncing the movement in favor of more contemporary and restless creative vision. A larger-than-life figure, he also excelled as a writer and cartoonist, and for decades was a fixture of radio, serving as the hilariously deadpan host of the long-running I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue. Born in Eton on May 23, 1921, Lyttelton was the product of a distinguished and wealthy family -- a lifelong jazz enthusiast, he received his first trumpet at age 15 and formed a band with some Eton College classmates. He also studied military drumming under a former Coldstream Guards drum major and joined the school band as a percussionist. Lyttelton enlisted in the British Army on D-Day and saw combat in Italy -- on leave in London he sat in with local jazz bands, and upon returning to civilian life in 1945 he enrolled at the Camberwell School of Art. In March 1947, he signed on with semi-professional trad jazz combo George Webb's Dixielanders; when Dixielanders clarinetist and professional cartoonist Wally Fawkes was promoted to write and illustrate a full-fledged daily strip for The Daily Mail, Lyttelton was tapped to fill Fawkes' previous position sketching "column-breakers" -- i.e., humorous or decorative drawings inserted into the text. He also reviewed jazz and classical recordings for the newspaper, and later scripted the Fawkes-drawn strip Flook as well.
