Two obscure records led by pianist-arranger-composer Nils Lindberg are combined on this enjoyable single-CD. The first seven songs feature Lindberg with either a quintet or a septet. Among his sidemen on these cool jazz performances are altoist Rolf Billberg and the great baritonist Nils Lindberg.
The second set, which generally utilizes a 12-piece group, is more advanced, looking both toward the cool and Third Stream works; trumpeters Idrees Sulieman and Jan Allen, trombonist Eje Thelin and altoist Billberg are among the key players. Despite the lack of name recognition, Nils Lindberg's CD is well worth checking out by fans of cool-toned jazz.By Scott Yanow
