The Gellers met in Los Angeles in 1950 and were married in New York, shortly after Herb had quit the Claude Thornhill orchestra. They stayed together for eight years, but these are the only recordings Herb did with Lorraine. They formed an exceptional tandem and their playing carried a distinct sound, a harmonic quality that was neither his or hers. This CD wants to recover that feeling because, although she passed away a mere three years after the present sides, one thing remains certain: Herb and Lorraine Geller were two of a kind.

Miss Tess is a young songwriter, guitarist, and accomplished jazz singer currently involved in the thriving Boston music scene. She first began her performing career in Charm City (ah beloved Baltimore), but has since moved to Boston and found a new happy home in the jazz/roots/folk scene. She is making the scene with help from her band, “Miss Tess & The Bon Ton Parade”, in which she is accompanied by upright bass, sax/clarinet, drums, and a lead guitarist. Dig this swingin’ show!  Miss Tess is the Modern Vintage Queen. Her melodies and lyrics are very real and current, yet definitively infused with reveries of 20s and 30s swing, jazz, and blues. Fans are often surprised to learn that most of the songs are original. You can tell that she is an old soul would who has spent a lot of time listening to the wistful melodies of classic jazz and blues. “My dad told me that when I was only 2 years old, I used to fall asleep listening to his big band practice going on right under my room in the basement. Now I can sleep through anything- haha.”  "When Tomorrow Comes" is her second album consisting mostly of jazz standards and a few originals, with some high-profile jazz musicians from the dc area (Steve Abshire-guitar, John Jenson-trombone, Robert Redd-piano, Ralph Gordon-bass, Rusty Mason-sax, Steve Larrance-drums, Nate Leath-fiddle, Berklee grad). https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/misstessmusic

Joe Henderson - The Elements

Styles: Saxophone And Flute Jazz
Year: 1974
File: MP3@320K/s
Time: 41:52
Size: 97,0 MB
Art: Front

(11:07)  1. Fire
( 9:58)  2. Air
( 7:32)  3. Water
(13:13)  4. Earth

This is one of the odder Joe Henderson recordings. The four lengthy selections not only feature the great tenor-saxophonist but the piano and harp of Alice Coltrane (during one of her rare appearances as a sideman), violinist Michael White, bassist Charlie Haden, percussionist Kenneth Nash and Baba Duru Oshun on tablas. The somewhat spiritual nature of the music (Henderson's compositions are titled "Fire," "Air," "Water" and "Earth") and the presence of Alice Coltrane makes these Eastern-flavored performances rather unique if not all that essential: an early example of world music in jazz. This recording has been reissued as part of Henderson's eight-CD Milestone box set. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-elements-mw0000087334

Personnel:  Joe Henderson - tenor sax, flute, alto flute;  Alice Coltrane - piano, harp, Tambura, harmonium;  Charlie Haden - bass;  Leon "Ndugu" Chancler - drums (1, 4);  Kenneth Nash - narrator (4), flute (3), congas, North African Sakara Drum, bells, gong, percussion;  Baba Duru Oshun - percussion, Tabla;  Michael White - violin

Arnett Cobb - Party Time

(5:55)  4. PartyTime
(5:14)  5. Flying Home
(6:52)  6. The Slow Poke
(5:14)  7. Cocktails For Two

Tenor saxophonist Arnett Cobb, who was inactive between 1957 and 1958 due to a serious auto accident, recorded three strong albums for Prestige during the first half of 1959. This CD reissue is the only one of the trio that features Cobb as the only horn and backed by a pianist (Ray Bryant) instead of an organ player.

With bassist Wendell Marshall, drummer Art Taylor and Ray Barretto on conga completing the group, most of the focus is on Cobb's tough yet flexible tenor. Such songs as "When My Dreamboat Comes Home," "Blues in the Closet" and a remake of "Flying Home" make this the definitive Arnett Cobb album from the era. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/party-time-mw0000177104

Personnel:  Arnett Cobb - tenor saxophone;  Ray Bryant - piano;  Wendell Marshall - bass;  Art Taylor - drums;  Ray Barretto - congas

?Red Garland mixed together the usual influences of his generation (Nat Cole, Bud Powell, and Ahmad Jamal) into his own distinctive approach; Garland's block chords themselves became influential on the players of the 1960s. He started out playing clarinet and alto, switching to piano when he was 18. During 1946-1955, he worked steadily in New York and Philadelphia, backing such major players as Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Roy Eldridge, but still remaining fairly obscure. That changed when he became a member of the classic Miles Davis Quintet (1955-1958), heading a rhythm section that also included Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. After leaving Miles, Garland had his own popular trio and recorded very frequently for Prestige, Jazzland, and Moodsville during 1956-1962 (the majority of which are available in the Original Jazz Classics series). The pianist eventually returned to Texas and was in semi-retirement, but came back gradually in the 1970s, recording for MPS (1971) and Galaxy (1977-1979) before retiring again. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/artist/red-garland-mn0000882950/biography
