Featured are the great blues singer Joe Turner and the strong singer and altoist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, along with the Count Basie Orchestra. "Just a Dream," "Everyday I Have the Blues," "Cherry Red" and "Stormy Monday" receive very spirited renditions, as do some newer blues. Buck Clayton, Joe Turner - Buck Clayton Meets Joe Turner

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 44:29
Size: 101.8 MB
Styles: Trumpet jazz
Year: 1965/1988
Art: Front

[7:27] 1. Honeysuckle Rose
[7:30] 2. I'm In A World Of Trouble
[4:10] 3. I Can't Get Started
[3:22] 4. Feel So Fine
[9:02] 5. Perido
[3:21] 6. I Want A Little Girl
[9:34] 7. Too Late, Too Late

Despite its title, trumpeter Buck Clayton and blues singer Big Joe Turner actually perform on three separate songs apiece, only coming together on the concluding "Too Late, Too Late." Recorded in Yugoslavia, these performances also utilize a four-piece Yugoslavian quartet, with vibraphonist Bosko Petrovic the only player to receive much fame through the years. Turner sounds fine on a pair of his blues and "I Want a Little Girl," while Buck jams enthusiastically on "Honeysuckle Rose," "I Can't Get Started" and "Perdido." Nothing all that surprising occurs, but the music is quite satisfying. ~Scott Yanow

Joe Turner (With Pee Wee Crayton & Sonny Stitt) - Everyday I Have The Blues

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 43:19
Size: 99.2 MB
Styles: Jazz-blues, R&B
Year: 1975/1991
Art: Front

[ 4:33] 1. Stormy Monday
[ 7:39] 2. Piney Brown (K.C.)
[ 9:09] 3. Martin Luther King Southside
[ 5:31] 4. Everyday I Have The Blues
[ 4:53] 5. Shake, Rattle And Roll
[11:31] 6. Lucille

This CD reissues one of Big Joe Turner's better Pablo releases. In 1975 Turner's voice was still strong and he had a compatible four-piece group that featured veteran guitarist Pee Wee Crayton. With guest Sonny Stitt contributing typically boppish solos on tenor and alto, Turner sings mostly familiar material (including "Stormy Monday," "Piney Brown" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll") plus his recent "Martin Luther King Southside." Recommended. ~Scott Yanow

Though endlessly confused with the singer Big Joe Turner, pianist Joe Turner came from a completely different direction, following the James P. Johnson/Fats Waller stride tradition, armed with a superb technique and a fine sense of swing. Born in Baltimore, he started to learn the piano from his mother at age five and began to make a name for himself in Harlem as a teenager shortly after his move to New York in 1925. He was an accompanist to Adelaide Hall in a duo, first with Alex Hill and then Francis Carter, the latter with whom he and Hall toured Europe in 1931. He remained in Europe through 1939 when war broke out, upon which he returned to the U.S. to work as a singer.

After playing with Sy Oliver's army band in 1944-1945 and Rex Stewart in 1946, Turner returned to the continent, residing in Hungary in 1948 and then Switzerland from 1949 to 1962. He settled in Paris in 1962 in a residency at La Calvados, continued to play engagements elsewhere in Europe and occasionally the U.S., and eventually survived to became the last major active stride pianist of his era. Among his few available albums is a 1984 project with Knocky Parker and his Houserockers on Southland. ~bio by Richard S. Ginnell

Count Basie and an all-star band (including trumpeter Harry Edison, trombonist J.J. Johnson and the tenors of Eddie Davis and Zoot Sims) back up veteran Kansas City blues singer Big Joe Turner on one of his better later albums. The many fine solos inspire Turner, who is in top form on such tunes as "Night Time Is the Right Time," "Wee Baby Blues" and "Roll 'Em Pete." ~Scott Yanow
