Rosemary Clooney - Everything's Rosie!

(3:02) 14. Harbor Lights
(2:54) 15. You Make Me Feel So Young
(2:37) 16. Witchcraft

This sixteen-song collection of rare Rosemary Clooney songs features nine unreleased tracks.

Seven are with Buddy Cole, with whom Clooney recorded the 1959 album "Swing Around Rosie." Since these tracks also date from 1959, they're probably session outtakes although the liner notes don't say.

The other two unreleased tracks were recorded in 1952 with the Earl Shelton Orchestra.

That leaves nine other songs on here. They'd already been released on the 1986 album "The Uncollected Rosemary Clooney," but since that collection isn't well-known, these songs will be new to most people.

The CD contains a lot of highlights. One of the best is Clooney's version of the Rodgers & Hart standard "Manhattan," where she adds just the right amount of earnestness to this ironic (and iconic) song.

Her take on "Witchcraft" contains some lyrics not features in the more famous version by Frank Sinatra. And even though most people are already very familiar with "Mountain Greenery," "But Not For Me," and "I Get A Kick Out Of You," it's definitely a kick to hear Clooney wrap her voice around these melodies.

The natural sound quality of this disc is also impressive. This CD was manufactured before producers starting pushing the "loudness" factor to the limit, so there is no "over-compression" or distorted sound. Because of that, Clooney is able to shine in all her vocal glory.

Thank You "Days of the Broken Arrows"for your contribution to the Blog!!

A new album from Hindsight Records, Rosemary Clooney "Love and Learn", has been released. The latest project from the label’s Reimagined Series was produced by John F. Forbes and executive produced by Thomas Gramuglia.

“This album is the combination of Rosemary Clooney in her prime, Buddy Cole’s colorful keyboards and John Forbes’ orchestrations, which makes Love and Learn both an excellent introduction to her beautiful singing, and a welcome addition for her longtime fans,” expressed Scott Yanow.

“Rosemary Clooney has become one of my favorites of all of the singers that I’ve worked with in this series,” shared producer John F. Forbes. “She has a deep resonance in her voice that really touches my heart and for many other listeners. It is easy for me to feel an emotional connection to her with her voice. She has a beautiful tonality, her phrasing is wonderful, and everything that she sings is warm.” He continued and said, “My Dad was a big theater organ fan, as was I. Buddy Cole’s organ was going to be in the mix of these performances with Rosemary Clooney and, rather than fighting it, I embraced it and orchestrated around his sound. I considered this a bit of a balancing act for his trio, which was different than the usual piano trio, and led itself to more orchestration than on the other projects. I used a bassless chamber ensemble that included a few cellos, alto flute, oboe, piccolo, and every now and then, a trumpet. I also added vibes on a couple of songs, although most of the vibes one hears is due to the stops Cole used on the organ, which sound great.”

Session musician Buddy Cole played piano, celeste, harpsichord and organ. The Reimagined Series additional production was recorded, mixed and mastered by John Forbes at Forjam Studios.

This Rosemary Clooney recording differs from all of her previous Concord albums in that she is joined by the L.A. Jazz Choir (a 12-voice group) on half of the dozen selections. The choral backing is a bit of an acquired taste for jazz listeners but Clooney's backup sextet does consist of tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, trumpeter Jack Sheldon (who helps out Clooney with his vocal on "People Will Say We're in Love"), trombonist Chauncey Welsch, pianist John Oddo (who is responsible for both the choral and instrumental arrangements), bassist John Clayton and drummer Joe LaBarbera.

Clooney interprets the music of Richard Rodgers and lyrics which are split almost evenly between Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein. Most of the tunes are fairly well-known (including "It Might as Well Be Spring," "I Could Write a Book," "You Took Advantage of Me" and "My Romance") but Rosemary Clooney makes them sound fresh and alive.By Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/sings-rodgers-hart-hammerstein-mw0000207686

While no one who has heard her can deny the charm and vocal talents of Rosemary Clooney, the truth is she usually recorded with big orchestras which favored commercial arrangements. Also the songs selected for her sessions frequently included more novelties or hits of the day than what he can consider properly jazz tunes.

This new Mosaic box, on the other hand, showcases her doing a radio show with the only backing of a jazz quartet, formed by Buddy Cole on piano, Vince Terri on guitar, Don Whitaker on bass, and Nick Fatool on drums. Also, for these shows, she was allowed to freely choose her program, and the results are amazing, five full CDs of Clooney doing the standards she loved with no restriction. An unexpected treasure of vocal jazz. https://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/67226/rosemary-clooney/rosemary-clooney-cbs-radio-recordings-1955-61

Rosemary Clooney (May 23, 1928 – June 29, 2002) was an American singer and actress. She came to prominence in the early 1950s with the song "Come On-a My House", which was followed by other pop numbers such as "Botch-a-Me", "Mambo Italiano", "Tenderly", "Half as Much", "Hey There" and "This Ole House". She also had success as a jazz vocalist. Clooney's career languished in the 1960s, partly due to problems related to depression and drug addiction, but revived in 1977, when her White Christmas co-star Bing Crosby asked her to appear with him at a show marking his 50th anniversary in show business. She continued recording until her death in 2002.

The Girl Singer, Rosemary Clooney's volume in the Bluebird's Best series, spotlights her talents as a swinging post-big band vocalist between 1958 and 1961, when she was basically hitless but still recording some great material (including many arrangements by Nelson Riddle and excellent duet albums recorded with Bing Crosby and Pérez Prado). Although 16 tracks for a digital-era compilation is basically short shrift, there are highlights galore  starting with "Clap Hands! Here Comes Rosie," a nice piece of fluff that introduced an album of the same name. Also great is an update (with Crosby) of "How About You?" to include references to Gypsy, Marlon Brando, and the Pittsburgh Pirates (Crosby was a co-owner). The two tracks with Prado find the exuberant Clooney matching the outboard orchestra. The Girl Singer also includes a version of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" recorded in Nashville with Floyd Cramer and (probably) a Chet Atkins arrangement. (No, Cassandra Wilson wasn't the first to treat it as a vocal standard.) For jazz or vocal fans curious about a great vocalist but with no wish to revisit "Come on-a My House" or "This Ole House," The Girl Singer is a solid collection.

Thanks for Nothing was Rosemary Clooney's only album recorded for Frank Sinatra's Reprise Records. (Love, released by Reprise in 1963, actually had been recorded for RCA Victor in 1961.) It was also her last full-length LP project until she began recording for Concord Records in 1977. In his discography included in Clooney's autobiography, Girl Singer, Michael Feinstein notes that Clooney "isn't very fond of this album because the stresses of her personal life are audible on many of the tracks." But those very stresses, which included marital discord and a dependence on prescription drugs, may have contributed favorably to the final product on an album devoted to songs of love gone wrong, much in the mold of Sinatra's Only the Lonely. Arranger/conductor Bob Thompson isn't interested in making all the tunes into saloon ballads, however. True, here you get Clooney's take on "The Man That Got Away," and it isn't very different from Judy Garland's, while Clooney's interpretation of "Black Coffee" resembles Peggy Lee's. But the album opens and closes with country songs of a type Garland and Lee would never imagine trying, while Clooney sounds right at home. And "Just One of Those Things" (complete with introductory verse) and "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" are taken at a jaunty pace that suggests the singer is going to be able to pick herself up off the barroom floor without assistance. Best of all are Carolyn Leigh and Cy Coleman's "The Rules of the Road" and the title song, which Clooney handles with her clear-spoken matter-of-factness. She may have been fading away personally and professionally at this point in her life, but she had one good album left in her, and this is it. ~ William Ryhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/album/thanks-for-nothing-mw0000662910

Rosemary Clooney sings both old and new songs on this 1980 Concord album. With the emphasis on ballads (including "Just the Way You are," "The Way We Were," "Hello Young Lovers" and "Tenderly"), there is less variety on this set than usual although a swinging rendition of "Will You Still Be Mine" is a fine closer. Clooney is heard in prime voice as usual and there are some fine concise solos by tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, cornetist Warren Vache, guitarist Cal Collins, pianist Nat Pierce and guest vibraphonist Cal Tjader. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/with-love-mw0000191616

Rosemary Clooney's hookup with the Concord label (which began in 1977) resulted in a renaissance in her career and to her being featured in much more jazz-oriented settings than in the past. This 1998 sampler of her Concord years is at its strongest when it features material from her earlier Concord projects, ones that often found her joined by tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton and cornetist Warren Vaché (although the latter is only on three of the CD's fourteen selections). Less interesting are a few later tracks (including an insipid "Thank Heaven for Little Girls") that show the gradual and inevitable decline in Clooney's voice, finding her backed by an orchestra. This set of the Concord Jazz Heritage Series is very much a mixed bag, highlighted by "I Cried for You," "I'll Be Seeing You," "Fascinating Rhythm" and "God Bless the Child" (taken as a duet with pianist Nat Pierce). ~Scott Yanow

Hey, Rosemary Clooney fans—what say you to 24 completely unreleased radio performances from the ‘50s?! Courtesy of the Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby estates, these songs hail from The Bing Crosby Show for General Electric, The Ford Road Show, and The Rosemary Clooney Show, and have never been released in any format, not even on that humongous box set of radio transcriptions issued by Mosaic a few years ago. Rosie was in her element singing on the radio; freed from Mitch Miller’s iron hand (and seemingly inexhaustible supply of novelty songs) at Columbia, she was able to tackle material that was a more suitable match for her effortless, floating voice. This collection of rarities includes selections pre-recorded for radio broadcast on tape for outstanding studio quality and features Rosie in both small group and big band settings. Liner notes by Clooney expert Tom Pickles, rare photos and warm remastering by Mike Milchner at SonicVision designed to capture every lilting note make this a keeper for Clooney aficionados.

Rosemary Clooney declared her love affair with Nelson Riddle "the best blending of my job and my personal life that I've ever had." While it ended their respective marriages, it also resulted in some excellent music. Riddle will be familiar to most as the guy who orchestrated the great Sinatra records for Capitol; that is, if he's familiar at all. Suffice it to say that he was one of the greatest arrangers of all time, creating backgrounds for several different artists that all managed to present that particular person in the best light. Rosie Solves The Swingin' Riddle , from 1961, is no different. Riddle has a large arsenal of musicians at his disposal who are able to create all kinds of textures, from the resonant bells of "Get Me To The Church On Time" to the brassy swagger of "I Ain't Got Nobody." But Riddle was also capable of straddling the line between bombast and beauty, and "I Get Along Without You Very Well" features the same bouncy, ocean bottom groove that anchored Sinatra's "I've Got You Under My Skin." The orchestration never overwhelms Clooney, since Riddle expertly creates backing that gives support rather than shelter.

Clooney is in fine form as well, investing the songs with the bold innocence that figured on her previous releases. She's capable of delivering the youthful gaiety of "Get Me To The Church On Time" as well as the wounded independence of "By Myself." Of course the song selection is part of the trick, and there's a nice balance between familiar songs and lesser known, yet catchy melodies. Riddle and Clooney are even capable of a few surprises; "April In Paris" features a strong Latin groove that takes a while for the brain to organize into a discernable pattern. If the riddle was, "How can you create a great vocal album that will stand up forty years later?" Rosie and Riddle did indeed solve it. Bluebird released a Rosemary Clooney compilation a few years ago that was only mediocre; they should have released this album instead. Rosie Solves the Swingin' Riddle is a terrific collaboration, and a classic vocal album. When Rosie's singing isn't grabbing you, it's a sure bet the orchestrations will. ~ David Rickert https://www.allaboutjazz.com/rosie-solves-the-swingin-riddle-rosemary-clooney-bluebird-review-by-david-rickert.php

Nice compliation of Rosie singles from the early & mid fifties. I know the cd cover says stereo (mine does also) but it's mono. The reason this is is because these are selections from singles and other sources. This was not an album recorded when it was released. The original selections were not recorded in stereo. The Lp was available in stereo and mono but the stereo was not true stereo. It was electronically processed even though it doesn't say it was. I purchased the Bear Family boxed sets and all these songs are in one of the boxes. All recorded before stereo. I own the MGM Lp in stereo and it sounds fine. But this cd sounds much better even though it's not in stereo.

Aside from that this is still a great cd. Excellent songs sung very nicely by Rosie. I play this one often and you will too. ~Carl J. Freda

This is an odd release by Rosemary Clooney, who's accompanied by keyboardist Buddy Cole and an unidentified rhythm section. Although the singer is in great form, Cole's extremely corny arrangements and his very dated sound on both organ and piano (which are frequently overdubbed, often in unison) threaten to make the entire session more of a nostalgia trip than something that will appeal to jazz collectors. Still, Clooney's pure swinging vocals on standards such as "'Deed I Do," "Blue Moon," "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me," and "This Can't be Love" are very rewarding, in spite of Cole's uninspiring backgrounds.~Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/swing-around-rosie-mw0000220001

After finishing her period as one of the Clooney Sisters with Tony Pastor's orchestra, Rosemary Clooney became famous for her pop hits on the Columbia label in the early '50s. Although never really a jazz singer on a consistent basis, Clooney had a few opportunities to record in jazz settings in the 1950s, most notably an album with Duke Ellington's orchestra. This sampler has four of the numbers with Ellington, three songs with a Benny Goodman small group, a few selections from the combo album Tenderly, numbers from sets titled Ring Around Rosie, Red Garters, and On Stage, and a song apiece with the orchestras of Percy Faith, Paul Weston, and Nelson Riddle. The repertoire is of high quality, and Clooney fares quite well. In fact, these were her most jazz-oriented recordings until she signed with Concord in the late '70s. Highlights include "How About You," "I'm Checkin' Out, Goombye," "Hey Baby," "Doncha Go 'Way Mad," "Sophisticated Lady," and "Goodbye." ~Scott Yanow

One of the criticisms of the movie De Lovely was that Cole Porter's music was sung by pop stars who weren't quite up to the task of interpreting his tunes. Bluebird has wisely issued an alternative to the soundtrack with It's De Lovely: The Authentic Cole Porter Collection, a compilation which features renditions of Porter tunes culled form the vast RCA Victor catalog, a lot of them done by people that helped make him famous. There are some true classics here, such as Artie Shaw's Begin the Beguine and Dorsey and Sinatra's Night and Day, where the marriage of a great song and great performance produced true magic. But there are also lesser-known recordings that are a good representation of how these songs sounded when Porter first composed them, such as "Let's Misbehave" by Irving Aaronson and his Commanders, and "Easy to Love" by Ray Noble & His Orchestra (and featuring vocals by the talented but obscure Al Bowlly). The producers really had to blow the dust off of some of these performances, and many of them sound appropriately dated, but more recent tracks from Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, and Rosemary Clooney still sound fresh today.

As an added bonus, there are two tracks featuring Porter singing his own compositions. Originally released as just Porter accompanying himself on piano, Vince Giordano has spiced up the tracks with new orchestration, which is not a bad idea since the composer was neither a great singer nor a great pianist. Thus, these aren't great performances, but still manage to be oddly charming. In addition to the vocal numbers, there are straight-ahead jazz tracks from Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, and Shorty Rogers that show how many artists loved to work through the changes of Porter's songs. However, if there's one weakness in the collection, it's these tracks. While the performances are good, they just don't fit in with the rest of the selections. The pop tunes are much shorter and focus on the genius of Cole Porter's lyric writing and compositional skills, but the jazz tunes tend to focus more on the improvisers and thus dilute the purpose of the project. Still, though, Bluebird has wisely crafted a disc that's a better find than the soundtrack to the movie, filled with great performances of Porter's songs the way he wanted them done. ~ David Rickert  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/its-de-lovely-the-authentic-cole-porter-collection-various-artists-bluebird-review-by-david-rickert.php
