Beegie Adair is a prolific, award-winning jazz pianist and arranger known for her interpretations of jazz and popular standards and show tunes. She has sold over two million recordings globally. Her melodic, fleet-fingered style reflects the sounds of her major influences, including George Shearing, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, and Erroll Garner. Adair grew up in Cave City, Kentucky, where she began taking piano lessons at age five. She continued to study piano throughout college, earning a B.S. in music education at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. During and after college, she played in jazz bands, and spent three years teaching music to children before moving to Nashville, where she became a session musician, working at WSM-TV and on The Johnny Cash Show (1969-1971). She and her husband also started a jingle company to write music for commercials.

In 1982, she and saxophonist Denis Solee formed the Adair-Solee Quartet, which evolved into the Be-Bop Co-Op, a jazz sextet. In 1998, she released Escape to New York, her first trio-led date with a rhythm section consisting of Bob Cranshaw and Gregory Hutchinson. She signed to the fledgling Hillsboro label for 2001's Dream Dancing: The Songs of Cole Porter; bassist Roger Spencer and drummer Chris Brown joined her. Dream Dancing was the first of dozens of themed albums devoted to songwriters and singers. In 2002, she was named a Steinway Artist. Most of Adair's recordings have been issued by the independent jazz label Green Hill Productions. They include 2008's Yesterday: A Solo Piano Tribute to the Music of the Beatles, 2010's Swingin' with Sinatra, and 2012's The Real Thing (which spent 20 weeks on the jazz charts and was chosen one of the year's best 100 jazz albums). In 2015, her trio collaborated with saxophonist Don Aliquo on Too Marvelous for Words. Since 2011, Adair and her trio have played Birdland in New York. While visiting, they have often collaborated with vocalist Monica Ramey. In the spring of 2016, that partnership bore fruit on the album Some Enchanted Evening. The following year saw Adair issue the compilation By Request, which featured her most requested and personal favorites. ~ William Ruhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/artist/beegie-adair-mn0000149265/biography

An actor, singer, and songwriter, Clifton Davis has appeared in several television shows and films. He has recorded numerous inspirational and gospel hits and has made a name for himself as a songwriter. More recently, he has taken to public speaking, mainly making motivational speeches at colleges and universities. Clifton Davis was born in Chicago and is the son of an evangelist. By the age of 15, he was set on an acting career. In 1963, he graduated from Pine Forge Institute and from there concentrated on his singing and acting career. During the '60s, his career focused mainly on the stage. He made his Broadway debut in 1968 with How to Steal an Election with music and lyrics by Oscar Brand. He also starred in Two Gentlemen of Verona, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. For his role in the musical Do It Again, he received the Theatre World Award. Despite his success on Broadway, the star became involved in drugs and alcohol at an early age. Davis recounts these experiences during his seminars and lectures across the country. He blames his addictions on peer pressure. During this time he claims he "lost valuable time and money and gained sickness, depression and desperation." Lately he has been reaching out to college and university students, telling them his story, hoping they learn from his experiences.

Aside from his stage reputation, Davis has also garnered film and television credits. In 1971, he made several appearances on Love American Style. This was followed by him becoming the host of his own variety show, The Melba Moore-Clifton Davis Show, on ABC. His film career began in 1974 with the film Lost in the Stars. From 1974-1975, he portrayed Clifton Curtis on the comedy show That's My Mama. The '80s were a very important decade for Davis. His popularity and fame grew enormously in 1986 when he starred as Reverend Reuben Gregory, opposite Sherman Hemsley, on the comedy sitcom Amen. During the four years the show was on the air, Davis also played the role of a minister in real life. He was the associate pastor at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in California. He also starred in several movies in the '80s, including The Night the City Screamed, Don't Look Back: The Story of Leroy "Satchel" Paige, and Dream Date. Aside from his singing and acting talents, Davis is also credited with being a songwriter. He wrote the Jackson 5 hit "Never Can Say Goodbye." Despite obstacles and hardships, Clifton Davis remains a famous, inspiring actor and singer who contributed greatly to stage, film, and television. ~ Kim Summers https://www.allmusic.com/artist/clifton-davis-mn0000158244

An elegant collection of romantic standards performed by a jazz piano trio.

Born in Cave City, Kentucky, a small farming community of 1,400 residents, Beegie Adair (pronounced B-G) grew up avidly listening to music. At age four she started the 'two-finger-hunt-and-peck' system on the piano, but began actual lessons when she was five and continued studying piano through college at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education. Arriving in Nashville during the heyday of Country music allowed her the opportunity to accompany such legendary performers as Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton. Because Nashville was a hot bed of musical television tapings and live performances during that time, Adair also worked with such entertainers as Neil Diamond, Mama Cass Elliott, and Peggy Lee in her position as in-house pianist for The Johnny Cash Show for ABC-TV plus other television programs featuring Lucille Ball, Carol Burnette, and Dinah Shore. Adair serves as adjunct professor in jazz studies at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music and currently teaches singers repertoire at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Beegie credits as her main influences Jimmy Jones, George Shearing, Teddy Wilson, Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Russ Freeman (the pianist who played with Chet Baker in the Fifties). ~ Editorial Reviews https://www.amazon.com/Time-Love-Jazz-Piano-Romance/dp/B00AK77WKY

For her Christmas album, pianist Beegie Adair engages an orchestra to back her usual trio. That action pushes the genre designation for her music from "jazz" to "easy listening." Although generally defined as a jazz artist, Adair is on the more conservative side, usually playing the melodies of the standards she likes to fill her albums with, while adding only brief improvisational sections and embellishments. Here, the string arrangements don't leave much room even for that, making this instrumental pop with a holiday bent and almost no jazz content. Of course, it's a pleasant recording of some very familiar material, festive and occasionally playful ("Santa Baby") as well as sentimental. Most artists use their Christmas albums simply to present seasonal music in their established styles; Adair goes beyond that somewhat by adding the orchestra, but this album still sounds like what her followers would expect. ~ William Ruhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/album/winter-romance-mw0001778192

Jack Jezzro is a musician and producer who has enjoyed a long and successful career as a studio musician, accompanying a wide variety of major artists on their recordings, as well as crafting his own albums in which he shows off his talent and versatility as a guitarist.

Jezzro was born in Rivesville, West Virginia on December 2, 1957. He had a keen interest in music from an early age, starting to play the piano when he was just three. He taught himself to play guitar from listening to records by Chet Atkins, and in his teens, he learned to break down the individual parts from songs he loved by Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, and the Doobie Brothers. After high school, Jezzro studied at West Virginia University; their music school didn't have a program for the guitar, but Jezzro could also play the bass, and his skills on the instrument led to him to a membership in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra while still attending WVU. Jezzro went on to attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he was mentored by noted bassist James VanDemark. Just as he did at WVU, Jezzro soon joined the local symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, as a bassist, while also honing his chops as a jazz guitarist. In 1981, he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he became the bassist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for ten years. In the mid-'80s, he made his way into the prestigious world of session work when he became part of the Nashville String Machine, a string section for hire that regularly appeared on recordings by some of the major stars of country and pop music, from Garth Brooks and Faith Hill to Bruce Springsteen and Matchbox 20. In 1988, Jezzro stepped out as a solo artist with the release of his first album as a headliner, Step on It, which was released in Japan by Pony Canyon Records. (A revised edition of the disc was released in the United States as A Day's Journey.) Over the next 30 years, Jezzro would release a steady stream of jazz, country, pop, Latin, and inspirational albums (most through the Green Hill label) that focused on his tasteful but expert guitar work and his interplay with other musicians. Jezzro also continued to work steadily as a session player and a producer, overseeing his own sessions as well as those of other Green Hill artists. His work as an artist and producer has earned him one Grammy nomination and seven Dove Award nominations to date. The prolific bassist has played on or produced over 300 albums, and in 2017 alone, he produced By Request: Most Requested Songs for jazz pianist Beegie Adair, released his own album Sinatra on Guitar, and brought out a sequel to his 2010 album Christmas Jazz titled Christmas Jazz 2. ~by Mark Deming

Ms. Beegie Adair is one of those musicians many people have heard without realizing it. As a regular Nashville session hand, she has played with no less than Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. Adair also has had a parallel career as a jazz pianist in the genially lyrical mold of Errol Garner and George Shearing. Dancing In The Dark is a tribute to the music sung by and associated with Fred Astaire. (While not a jazz singer per se, Astaire himself recorded with jazz musicians such as Oscar Peterson on occasion.) Accompanied only by bass and drums, Adair imbues these classic, old-school romantic songs with good-natured swing, keeping that aspect of Astaire's flair intact. ~ Mark Keresma https://www.allmusic.com/album/dancing-in-the-dark-a-tribute-to-fred-astaire-mw0000794474

Beegie Adair is a prolific, award-winning jazz pianist and arranger known for her interpretations of jazz and popular standards and show tunes. She has sold over two-million recordings globally.

~by William Ruhlmann

BEEGIE ADAIR was born in Kentucky and began piano lessons when she was five. She continued studying piano through college at Western State University in Bowling Green where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education and played jazz professionally every weekend. Adair credits as her main influences Jimmy Jones, Teddy Wilson, Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Red Garland and Russ Freeman (the pianist who played with Chet Baker in the Fifties). Beegie’s first main gig was with the Hank Garland Quartet. She moved to Nashville and landed in the house band at radio station WSM for a decade. That led to being the in-house pianist for The Johnny Cash Show on ABC-TV for three years where she performed for millions of viewers not only with Cash, but also guests such as Neil Diamond, Mama Cass Elliot and Peggy Lee.

DAVID DAVIDSON is a member of a rare group of musicians whose artistry crosses the traditional boundaries of musical styles by combining the worlds of classical, pop and commercial music with equal success. It would be far too simplistic to define David as a country music session violinist, or as an arranger, or even as a composer or orchestral concertmaster. He is all of these things and he approaches each of his many facets with equal amounts of joy, exquisite artistry and technical mastery. He often refers to Nashville as “the Vienna of the 21st century” and he lives that vision.

Don Aliquo: Saxophone
Beegie Adair: Piano
Roger Spencer: Bass
Chris Brown: Drums

If anyone doubts the timelessness of classic jazz, one listen to saxophonist Don Aliquo and pianist Beegie Adair’s Too Marvelous for Words will convince them otherwise. “We were visualizing vintage, mid-Fifties, Be-Bop feel” states Beegie – and they fully captured it. Sometimes that intent can create a somewhat nostalgic feel, losing the immediacy that is at the core of all great jazz. In the hands of these two masters, quite the opposite occurred. The listener is instead transported into the mindset of that spectacular era, complete with all of the excitement, urgency, and joy of adventurous discovery that were its hallmarks.
A key reason for this is the remarkable empathy among all the musicians, creating the synergy that is so essential for jazz at its highest levels. The outstanding bass and drums tandem of Roger Spencer and Chris Brown respectively are the regular members of Beegie’s trio, contributing greatly to the sense of seamless cohesiveness and unity of purpose that fuels this entire album. While Don has performed often with the two of them over the years, he had performed far less frequently with Beegie before this date. But their profound connection is simply stunning, sounding as if they’ve been playing together regularly for years. Their interplay is so symbiotic that it often seems like they are dancing.

Playing mostly tenor, along with two pieces on alto, Don’s sound on both instruments is full-bodied and robust. His sensational phrasing is so articulate and emphatic that the stories he tells are vividly hewn, fascinating tales. His sound is steeped in the vernacular of the powerhouse saxophonists, but utterly singular and with a completely modern flair. Beegie, internationally loved and renowned, is a marvelous pianist, with an understated but dynamic style and a consummate sense of unfettered and always inventive swing, whether soloing or in ensemble support. Spencer’s deeply resonant sound and inspired playing gives the music a full, but always buoyant bottom. Combined with Brown’s sensitive, subtly vigorous but never overpowering sense of drive and swing, their impeccable time and taste locks every piece into a perfect groove.

The repertoire is sublime, combining wonderful items from the Great American Songbook with classic works from four of the jazz legacy’s greatest composers. That all but one of these compositions were originally written between 1937 and 1952 (the exception being Isfahan, one of the final Strayhorn/Ellington collaborations in 1966) is further testimony to the aforementioned timelessness of this music. Without losing sight of the era they were trying to capture, the exceptional arrangements make every piece modern, vital, refreshing, exhilarating and completely of the moment. The ten pieces include seven lively swingers, ranging from gentle to surging, and three lovely ballads.

There are three items from the unparalleled Billy Strayhorn – another collaboration with Duke; and his own Johnny Come Lately, which opens the album in a loping groove with a staggered approach that creates a somewhat Monk-ish feel. Isfahan is an almost-ballad in soft swing that grows bouncier as it moves along; and the exquisite Day Dream is built on Beegie’s lushly rich piano with Aliquo playing tenor, evoking the heart-wrenching beauty that Johnny Hodges always brought to this piece on alto.
Don brings his own passionate alto styling to Tadd Dameron’s beautiful If You Could See Me Now, an emotive and heartfelt rendition with a deep tinge of blue. Don also plays alto – with Beegie in a splendid Red Garland-ish swing mode – on the playful and joyously up-tempo This Can’t Be Love, one of two Rodgers & Hart songs included here. The other, a poignant and deeply moving version of It Never Entered My Mind showcases Don’s sumptuous tenor sax balladry.

Captivating rhythmic approaches are at play on the richly syncopated Fragos, Baker and Gasparre hit song I Hear a Rhapsody, and the Latin-flavored, ostinato driven All or Nothing at All (Arthur Altman) that features a tour-de-force tenor solo – powerfully visceral and daring, but never losing its rich lyricism. Beegie lays down a deeply grooved and funky bounce on Thelonious Monk’s Bye-Ya, and provides terrific interplay with Don’s fluid and punchy tenor work.

While Nashville is far more famous for another form of music, with jazz artists like these four on its scene, country music may have to move over a bit and make some room.

Inspired by the timeless music of Bob Wills, this recording highlights the Western Swing genre with musical perfection. Some describe Western Swing as being somewhere between Country-Western and Big Band Swing. Diversity best describes the artistry of guitarist, bassist, and producer Jack Jezzro. His recordings and productions have sold well into the millions, and he surely ranks high in formal education, knowledge of his instrument, and sheer musicality. But even more than that, Jezzro has a style and taste that are all his own qualities that are a breath of fresh air to the music of today and qualities that breathe new life into the music of yesterday.

The Early Years Jazz is a natural expression for this West Virginia native, who seems to have been born musical. Jack Jezzro grew up in the small town of Rivesville, starting on piano and accordion when he was very young. "I would go to the piano and start banging out tunes when I was four or five," he recalls. His remarkable skill at simultaneously fingering melody and chord changes came naturally to him as a young listener. "I had a stack of Chet Atkins records, and that’s how I learned to play," Jezzro reports. "As a kid, I’d want to play all the parts. I’d listen to a tune by James Taylor, The Doobie Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, or whomever.

I’d play the bass part, the piano, the vocal and I’d want to do it all right there on the guitar."  Education For his bass-playing skills, Jezzro earned a scholarship to West Virginia University in nearby Morgantown. "I still kept playing guitar, but they didn't have a guitar program," he says. "I wanted to go to school there because it was close by, so I picked the bass and really got into it." The year was 1976. "That fall, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra came to Morgantown, and I got to meet the principal bass player, Sam Hollingsworth. We immediately hit it off." Hollingsworth took Jezzro under his wings, preparing him for a professional career. More.....http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jezzrojack
