Known by his colleagues as a "singer's singer" and a "musician's musician," Buddy Greco sold more than a million records. He was well-known for releasing songs from every genre, from jazz to country to pop music. He performed on-stage, on film, and on television. Born Armando Greco in Philadelphia, he began singing and playing piano at the age of four, first using his talents performing on the radio. By the age of 16 Greco had more than a decade of musical experience behind him. He was playing in Philadelphia's Club 13 nightclub when he was spotted by Benny Goodman. Bandleader Goodman was impressed by Greco's talents and hired him as a pianist, singer, and arranger. At the age of 16 Greco was traveling the world with one of the most popular big bands of the '30s, Benny Goodman & His Orchestra. He stayed with the group for four years.

At the ripe age of 20 Greco decided to pursue a solo professional music career. He began singing and performing in nightclubs and concerts. Some of his hit recordings included the popular favorites "Oh Look at Her, Ain't She Pretty," "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Around the World." During his musical career he made more than 65 albums, including an album with the London Symphony Orchestra, in which he conducted and played. In the '60s, Greco's music career was very successful; he even appeared with the Beatles in a performance for Queen Elizabeth II. During the '60s Greco also seriously began a career in film and television, and in 1967 he was a regular performer on the TV series Away We Go. This nationwide television program gave Greco enormous exposure as a singer and pianist. He followed the series with a part in the 1969 film The Girl Who Knew Too Much. His talents took him to great heights, with more than 100 hit singles. During the '70s and '80s, Greco concentrated on recording and performing, with hits across multiple genres including jazz, country, and pop music. Audiences marveled at his many styles. His career also included composing and recording scores for film and television.

After decades of performing, Greco remained one of the most widely known singers of his time. In the early '90s he toured with "The Salute to the Benny Goodman Band." The ensemble performed 72 shows, regularly garnering standing ovations. He performed for two years at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas, and in 1996 ended two world tours at the Café Royale in London. Given all his musical credits, Greco became an inductee into the Philadelphia Music Alliance's Walk of Fame and garnered entries in both The Encyclopedia of Great Musicians and The Encyclopedia of Great Jazz Singers and Musicians. Buddy Greco died in January 2017 in Las Vegas at the age of 90. His musical abilities live on in his sizable discography of albums and hit singles. ~ Kim Summers

If the recognition of one's peers is the true measure of success, then few men are as successful as composer, arranger, and conductor Henry Mancini. In a career that spanned 40 years, writing for film and television, Mancini won four Oscars and twenty Grammys, the all-time record for a pop artist. For 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's alone, Mancini won five Grammys and two Oscars. Breakfast at Tiffany's includes the classic "Moon River" (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), arguably one of the finest pop songs of the last 50 years. At last count, there were over 1,000 recordings of it. His other notable songs include "Dear Heart," "Days of Wine and Roses" (one Oscar, two Grammys), and "Charade," the last two with lyrics by Mercer. He also had a number one record and won a Grammy for Nino Rota's "Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet." Among his other notable film scores are The Pink Panther (three Grammys), Hatari! (one Grammy), Victor/Victoria (an Oscar), Two for the Road, Wait Until Dark, and 10. His television themes include "Peter Gunn" (two Grammys, recorded by many rock artists), "Mr. Lucky" (two Grammys), "Newhart," "Remington Steele," and The Thorn Birds television mini-series.

Mancini's heyday was the early '60s, when his score for Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) yielded the Oscar-winning hit single "Moon River," which instantly became a pop standard. The following year, he wrote the music for Days of Wine and Roses, which also won an Oscar for its title song. Throughout the next three decades, he continued to be one of the most successful film composers in the world, as well as a popular concert conductor. He continued working until his death in 1994; just prior to his demise, he was writing the score for the musical adaption of Victor/Victoria.

What kept Mancini's work fresh was his ability to write in almost any style imaginable and his successful experimentations with unusual sounds and instruments. In his 1989 memoir Did They Mention the Music?, Mancini's co-author Gene Lees wrote that "More than any other person, he Americanized film scoring, and in time even European film composers followed in his path," and that Mancini wrote scores that "contained almost as many fully developed song melodies as a Broadway musical." Had he not remained true to his first love, film scoring, Mancini would have more than likely made as large an impact on the Broadway stage as he made on the silver screen. ~Kenneth M. Cassidy

Few can match the lifelong extraordinary of Buddy Greco. His peers have called him a singer's singer and a musician's musician. He has been internationally recognized year after year as one of the top Jazz pianists and vocalists of our time. He appears at top nightclubs, concert halls, symphonies and in movies. He has appeared on every major television show in the United States and throughout the world. By order of Queen Elizabeth II, he was one of the only Americans to appear with the Beatles for a command performance for Her Majesty the Queen. He began playing the piano at the age of four. As a child radio personality and gifted pianist he was a performing veteran by the age of 18 when Benny Goodman found him. Buddy accepted Benny Goodman's offer of a job as pianist, singer/arranger, and traveled the world with the Benny Goodman Band for two years. Since then, Buddy has sold millions of records and received gold records for hits such as "Oh Look At Her Ain't She Pretty", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and "Around The World". He enjoys the rare distinction of having made 65 albums, 100 singles ranging in style from Jazz to Country/Western and Pop music. To date, Buddy's particular favorite is the album he made with a London Symphony Orchestra in which he arranged, played piano and conducted. Buddy has been honored by his hometown and he was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Alliance's "Walk of Fame". He has also gained acclaim for his musicianship and talent in the "Encyclopedia of Great Musicians" and the "Encyclopedia of Great Jazz Singers and Musicians".

Fifty years after he worked for Benny Goodman, he toured with the "Salute to The Benny Goodman Band", only this time to star, headline and conduct. The tour took him to 72 cities and 72 unforgettable shows which drew standing ovations to capacity crowds. He brought the house down when he recently appeared at Carnegie Hall in "An Evening with Nat King Cole", a tribute to a dear friend. He has been a Las Vegas favorite, from the first performance in 1950 with Goodman, through the swinging 60's with The Rat Pack, to the present day, he has been performing to capacity crowds. He is currently producing a nationally syndicated live radio show, "VEGAS LIVE TONITE!" The show recreates the glamorous old Vegas, promotes current shows in Vegas and his 13-piece swing band, and plenty of celebrity guests. He is also producing the stage production, "FEVER, A Tribute to Peggy Lee", starring his wife, singer Lezlie Anders.

[4:12] 14. How Insensitive
[2:31] 15. Not Like This

It's been 30 years since Gill Manly began singing jazz standards around the clubs and bars of London, after a few years honing her skills in West End musicals and fringe theatre. She has garnered much praise during that time, working with fellow singers Mark Murphy and Ian Shaw, among others. The Lies Of Handsome Men is only her third album—a decade-long absence from the music business between her debut, Detour Ahead (Parrott Records, 1995), and With A Song In My Heart (Linn Records, 2009) may go some way to explaining the scarcity. The beauty of Manly's voice and the relationship between that voice and Simon Wallace's piano across these 15 songs leads to a fervent hope that such scarcity is at an end.

Wallace, who was lyricist Fran Landesman's long-term songwriting collaborator, is a sensitive and unselfish accompanist who also produced this album. All of these songs are Manly's personal favorites, selected from her "personal treasure trove." Manly delivers the lyrics with such emotion and honesty that it's easy to believe that these songs are autobiographical, even with the knowledge that someone else wrote them all. Of course, some of these narratives may well touch on Manly's personal experiences—she describes Francesca Blumenthal's title track as "a tongue-in-cheek biographical nod to my past"—but even when she sings standards like "Witchcraft" or "Charade," she brings an individuality to each song.

Guest singer/pianist Buddy Greco joins Manly for Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen's "Second Time Around." It's not really a duet—Manly sings the first half of the song, Greco the second—but Greco's piano playing is stylish and, while his voice lacks the strength of past years, his phrasing remains strong.

In such sterling musical company a couple of songs—Tears For Fears' rather portentous "Mad World" and Rod McKuen's "A Single Woman"—are less impressive, despite the quality of Manly's vocals. But never fear, for the highlights are many: Oliver Nelson and Mark Murphy's soulful "Stolen Moments," Landesman's lovely "Before Love Went Out Of Style" (with music by Dudley Moore) and the world-weary grace of John Scott and Caryl Brahms' "Woman Talk" are all standout performances.

The finest performance of all is Manly's interpretation of Dmitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington's "Wild Is The Wind." Wallace's accompaniment is spacious and considered; a perfect foundation for Manly's restrained yet heartfelt vocal. It's a striking example of "less is more," and it just might be the benchmark interpretation of this great song. ~Bruce Lindsay
