This one might already be known to many people on here but it wasn’t known to me. Another blind buy (based on seeing there was a cover of “People Are Strange” and the totally cool photo of Julie on the back) and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The cover of People Are Strange is, well, strange.

Sort of slightly psych but also to me it also sounds sort of disjointed-Broadway as well. It’s hard to describe so take a listen for yourselves. My favorite track on here is the first one: “All’s Quiet on West 23rd street”. The intro is banging, and when her voice comes in it’s just right to my ears. I suppose this could be considered pop, but to me it seems that there is something else going on.

Apparently Budd was a child prodigy sort of singer cut her first album when she was 14 or so. She still seems to be around and has a website, but truthfully she seems to have gone the diva singer route which I find much less interesting than what’s on here. Oh, and here’s that photo of her from the back cover. http://waxidermy.com/blog/julie-budd-child-of-plenty/

Merv immediately took Julie under his wing, and from there she went on to appear on several major TV shows, including the Tonight Show, on which she has been a frequent guest. Throughout her career, Julie Budd has co-starred with such legendary performers as: Frank Sinatra, Bill Cosby, Joan Rivers, George Burns, Bob Hope, Don Rickles, Liberace and Robert Klein, to name a few. Julie Budd is one of those enduring talents who has outlived her almost premature early success. Discovered at age 12 in the late 1960s, she played her first engagement in the Catskills that same year, and was appearing on the Merv Griffin Show six months later; she subsequently became a fixture on the talk show and supper club circuits. From her precocious beginnings, co-starring with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Liberace, George Burns, and Bob Hope, Budd developed into a sophisticated interpreter of popular songs, comparable to Sinatra or Torme, playing all of the best venues from Las Vegas to the Catskills. Budd has also done some acting, principally in association with the Circle Repertory Theater and Playwright's Horizons in New York, as well as occasional film appearances, but her main activity in recent years has been her one-woman show, which also yielded her album Pure Imagination, issued in 1997. If You Could See Me Now followed in the spring of 2000. ~ Bruce Eder https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/julie-budd/id289591689#fullText
