Julia Rich is the featured vocalist and road manager for the current tribute Glenn Miller Orchestra. For her first album, I'll Take Romance, Rich has opted for an unadventurous, but solid play list of eleven standards and one original, which she delivers in her own sweet way. Rich's big band experience comes into play on this disc. In addition to excellent phrasing, her sense of timing is faultless as she interacts with her instrumentalists in ensemble and individually. "More Than You Know" is introduced with the verse with Rich sequing into the chorus behind the caressing of Bob Mater's cymbals. Tenor man Ricky Woodard comes in with his deep, mellow tenor maneuvering in and around Rich's plaintive of this Billy Rose/Edward Eliscu classic. Woodard's big horn plays a major role throughout this disk as he blows at least one chorus on almost every cut. One of his more interesting solos comes on "Stars Fell on Alabama" where he does some catchy note bending. Rich's own "Two Afternoons in December" is done in 3/4 time and provides one more opportunity for Rich to work intimately with a member of the ensemble. This time it's George Tidwell and his mellow, soft-toned flugelhorn of. A very up beat "It's all Right with Me" highlights Gary Weaver's piano and the ubiquitous Woodard tenor as they this chestnut out for a fast gallop. Weaver shares piano duties with Bob Migliore whose skills are put on display with an unusual arrangement of "Deep Purple" which also spotlights the Latin percussion of Ron Gannaway, the bass of Jim Ferguson and Tidwell's muted trumpet. Ferguson worked with the legendary guitarist Lenny Breau in the 1980's. Migliore also does a regretful sounding piano as he duos with Rich on a melancholy "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning". But things end on a bright note with an upbeat version of "Blue Moon."We are not dealing with a breakthrough album here. Nonetheless, for about 45 minutes the listener is treated to laid back, pleasing and entertaining jazz music presented by a good straight ahead vocalist backed by some very talented instrumentalists. Julia Rich's I'll Take Romance is recommended.~ Dave Nathan https://www.allaboutjazz.com/ill-take-romance-julia-rich-cardinal-records-review-by-dave-nathan.php

Recording Date:December 26, 2002 - January 3, 2003.

Julia Rich has a warm singing voice, a style that falls between swinging jazz and cabaret, and the ability to sing a wide variety of material. She is best-known for singing with the Glenn Miller "ghost orchestra" but has the ability to stretch herself far beyond nostalgia swing. On If I Spoke French, her second CD as a leader, the repertoire ranges from "La Vie en Rose" to the Beatles' "I Will"; from a few of her witty and at-times wistful originals to "The Tennessee Waltz" and "All the Cats Join In." In addition to a rhythm section with either Tony Migliore or Gary Weaver on piano, she is joined by a combo that includes trombonist Larry O'Brien (from the Glenn Miller Band) and tenor-saxophonist Rickey Woodard. All in all, this is an entertaining and very musical outing. ~Scott Yanow

Moonshine in Nasville is Julia Rich's fifth full-length album for Cardinal Records, released March 14, 2009. Longtime girl singer for the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Rich included Miller's 1941 hit At Last on the recording, along with its seldom-heard verse. The album contains several standards from the '20s, '30s, and '40s; a couple from the '60s; and three Rich originals: Moonshine in Nashville, Halloween Birthday, and Good Things to Eat. Tony Migliore's ever-fresh arrangements come off the page in the creative hands of Tony on piano, Jim Ferguson on bass, Bob Mater on drums and percussion, Denis Solee on clarinet, George Tidwell on trumpet and flugelhorn, Pat Bergeson on guitar and harmonica, and Rickey Woodard on saxophone. The closing track, Over the Rainbow, was recorded in 2002 by Julia with Gary Weaver on piano and was rediscovered especially for this collection. Moonshine in Nasville is a straight ahead recording featuring ace musicians and Julia doing what she does best...old-style! ~ Editorial Reviews  http://www.amazon.com/Moonshine-Nashville-Julia-Rich/dp/B001Z0SW0E

Dr. Paul Tanner--trombonist with the original Glenn Miller Orchestra, theremin player on Good Vibrations, professor of jazz studies at UCLA--describes WITCH HAZEL as individual and charming and loaded with happy surprises.

“I became an immediate fan of Julia Rich after seeing her perform with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.. She has an elegant, unaffected style that I find very appealing. After listening to ‘Witch Hazel,’ I learned that Ms. Rich’s skills as a singer are matched by her skills as a songwriter. Some of her material, such as ‘Dreaming Dreams and Such’ and ‘A Little Thing Called Gin,’ are so intensely personal that it is difficult to imagine anyone other than her singing them.

Around half of the songs on this CD are originals; and, though Ms. Rich’s performance of standards is uniformly excellent (‘Desafinado’ is especially outstanding), those originals alone make this a great buy. They make it clear that Julia Rich is not only a singer and songwriter with considerable talent but is also a highly intelligent woman with a great deal of insight.

The other musicians on this CD are also excellent.

Readers of this review should know that I typically prefer instrumentals over vocals, especially in the genre of jazz. But I have listened to ‘Witch Hazel’ many times, and I seem to enjoy it more each time.” ~George H. Smith
